    I own this watch and it is a lot of fun and has been keeping time very well. Runs about 2 seconds fast per day. The bracelet is not a hair puller at all. Like many of us who love watches I own everything from multiple Rolex watches to so many Seiko watches I have lost count. The Timex M79 is very pleasant to wear and looks good on my 7.25” wrist. The bezel on my watch works much better than the watch you are reviewing. Look this is not a Seiko but it has a very nice design and is a keeper. In my opinion if you can get one for retail and you have an eclectic collection buy one you will not be sorry.

      @edwardkollar448 4 года назад

      Just One More Watch It’s a toss up. My wife actually likes the Q a lot with its colors, and with the smaller size she can wear it. This is the watch to wear to an amusement park like when we were dating 40+ years ago. I told her she can wear the Q and I’ll wear the M79. We could have purchased his and her Bulova watches for Valentines Day for about the same total cost as the 2 Timex.

  • @stevenwymor1398
    @stevenwymor1398 4 года назад +22

    Coulda sworn this was #446 Jody, you sure? Call me weird, but I sorta like the Q better for some reason. I like that the Q being a quartz allows it to be a bit more streamlined which would seem more appropriate with the case shape and design. This M79 looks like the Q has put on weight or is eating salty foods and is retaining water. But I still think the biggest failing of both designs is the 50m WR rating. If they had taken it to 100m I might have even bought a Q just for fun. Of course that hour hand is a Timex “T” but it’s a bit tacky and still too reminiscent of the Mercedes hands. Hard pass on this one for me. Just seems cheaply engineered and hastily designed to fill a temporary demand that will fade in a year when the market is flooded with used versions in 2021.

    I have my dads old Bulova snorkel from 1973, and I am surprised to see the interest there still is, in this style of watch. I guess they got it right back then. It seems nothing can replace the old but deadly radium illumination, for longevity and brightness, because the tritium died out on this one, years ago.

    Is a closed case movement going to be quieter? If so I don't know why they don't use one - like you said the automatic movement isn't the prettiest and reducing the noise of the rotor wobble might lessen one of the moans and niggles. Plus they could put a nice design on the back case.

  • @varanid9
    @varanid9 4 года назад +4

    I love acrylic box crystals; they have a look unlike any other, and, the fact that they flex and are stronger than the others make them the best choice for a dive watch (Of course, I wouldn't want one on my Seiko Marinemaster). I think this is a nice throw back to the Timex divers of the '70s, which had noisy movements and annoying bracelets. However, for $300, I think someone wanting a nostalgic diver would be better off looking through the assortment of Vostok Amphibias.

      The more consumers who buy it, the more people their might end up being who see that they've been had by them compromising on quality and overcharging them.
      If they based future production and pricing based on this selling like hot cakes, it could be a big mistake.
      A lot of the avid, early-adopters of these will actually become resellers and non returning customers, not the new avid fans and collectors that they can now 'rip the piss' out of, a bit like Seiko, that Timex might assume them, from the sales figures, to be.

My Timex is on a navy blue nato and it's getting an awful lot of wrist time currently. The simple dial really appeals to me. I also have the pepsi version. I do think the smaller bezel on the pepsi has a nicer look to it. I definitly consider this watch to be a keeper in my collection. Other than the cheaper movement I think this is a great watch. Curious if that could actually be switched out to something more visually appealing. It does seem strange to have an open case back with not the best looking movement doesn't it.

    Jody- I just got a M79, but I would agree with many of your criticisms of the watch.However, it has a certain charm - as you note - that I find appealing. There are watches at this price point or lower that provide better build, but there are plenty that don’t, but that doesn’t excuse its flaws. I like the watch for its “charm” and will probably keep it, but I am glad you provided an honest review so that buyers know what they are getting and paying for. For me, I’ll quote Hodinkee here, “. . . it's just fun to wear, and that's what this whole thing is about, after all,” but that’s an entirely personal thing and without consideration of the many points you bring up. Again, ... great honest review of its specs.

    I love mine. I haven't taken it into water yet, regardless its an attractive watch. Sapphire Crystal would be a perfect touch.

    Forget the watch.. That T-Shirt is the star of this video..! James , and Barry Sheene, were my heroes as a kid growing up in the seventies... Top marks for the T-Shirt, but you can keep the Timex...

    I just received my M79. Looks nice, but I wound-up returning it shortly after handling it right out of the box. I found that the bezel was cheap and poorly attached to the case. I could feel a lot of side play by holding the bezel and wobbling it sideways. The bezel of my Timex Q79 was much better attached. The watch does not hack. The movement was so noisy and cheap looking (they should have made a solid caseback to hide it). The band is, likewise, cheap (much like all the other cheaper retro-look watches). My Seiko 5 series watch felt more well-made and was less than $100. I wanted my $279 back. Don't waste yours.

    I’ll stick to my Casio Duro and Seiko SKX. If it’s gonna look like a dive watch, it better act like one, too. And I’m glad you showed us that automatic movement. No way I wanna wear a loud rattler on my wrist.

    I recently bought my first Miyota 8000 series movement - a Laco type B. It turned me off to Miyota 8000s. I love everything about that Laco except the movement.

    Nice video, as usual. A bit jarring going from the timekeeping to the statement, "its not all bad, though." That timekeeping was actually terrific, and could have been described as a big plus! Better than a Rolex!

    Kudos to you for a review that subverts the dominant paradigm on RUclips watch reviews: either fawning admiration, non-committal ambivalence or elitism.
    Frankly, having lived through when affordable watches were just like this (well, not even this good in many ways), I view the nostalgic trendiness for 1970s watches with a wary eye: pretty much all of those bracelets from Seiko and Timex and Bulova, whoever, were chintzy, tore our arm hair out, cut the bone on our wrist if you wore them securely, and broke! The watches themselves are thin and cheap feeling. If Timex has replicated that, but with the addition of a pedestrian movement well below that which we would find in an $80 Invicta or even a $22 Tevise, I can only hope that not too many people feel burned by it. I'm immune, I'm not going to get one.

    Impulse bought one when I got the email...received yesterday. I'm surprisingly pleased with it. The 40mm is a much better size for my wrist and overall it looks quite nice. But it's convinced me I need a real batman :-)
    So I'm probably sending mine back.

      Matt Stingray oh I agree. Although I got one for free as part of a sales event, and I rather like it. It’s a nice quality piece, but the retail for it was around five hundo. I would maybe pay up to 180 for it if I was in the market for one. Maybe.

    Is it the same movement as Citizen NY series? If so, my NY0090 is the most accurate movement in my collection with less than plus 1 per 24h (better than my Marinemaster with its plus 3.5 sec).

    Mechanical Automatics are cool, but they are missing the one reason I prefer Timex over all other watches, and that is the Indiglo dial light. "Who needs lume when you can light up the room?" Stick a battery in the case somehow and add Indiglo and maybe, just maybe I will buy an automatic, if I win the lottery. Until then, the accuracy of quartz gives me a lot of peace of mind. Ebay sellers have the Timex M79 an the NaviXL in the $100-$140 price range as of 10/31/23.

    I havn´t bought the Timex M79 but the Navi XL Automatic back in Nov. 2019 for 250 bucks. Nvi XL features the same movement as the M79 which is a Myiota 8215. Mine runs well, decently accurate. I like the field watch style of the Navi XL much more than this Sub homage style of the M79.
