Glad you are considering Fucks I really think it will wrap up the car nicely. I really appreciate your expertise and experience I too believe the 996 will go up in value especially the early cable throttle variants. Have you looked into the IPD plenum it would be a nice match with your exhaust.

Great cars and good value. Cater for the known weak points and yes, a PPI is recommended. And make sure the bore scoring check is done properly (see the Jake Raby videos). Watch all of these and you will gain a comprehensive understanding about these engines. I would not buy a car that had not had the IMS bearing mod carried out or have a budget to do it. This bearing is a service item. I.e. it will fail at some point. Most parts of a car will, obviously. When? Who can say? I know, I know some will run in excess of 100k miles. You pays yer money so they say. My car had a new Porsche engine fitted at 53000 miles due to short trips commuting to the local station and back in the evening. They don't like that! Thankfully before I bought the car. Now one of the best all round in the country. Keep doing the videos. Thanks.

Another really good video. Having driven a few 911's its better than every other standard/volume 911 that went before it. Furthermore, it looks get better with age. Looking at your car it looks compact, nimble and delicate. later cars from 997 are just too big. I love the look of your car, keep those headlamps and your mods I think are tasteful and enhance the car. On the subject of classic car values, who knows where they are going especially as we move to electric power. So, my advice is enjoy these great cars while we can. I do disagree with one point though - those seats are great and the driving position is brilliant for long journeys!
Thanks for the comments, Mark! Yes, I think the 996 will age quite nicely, and that's with my biased cap off. If you've managed to find a winning position with the seats, you're a lucky bloke!
It's a common thing that Porsche aficionados overvalue their cars (btw - the car was 296 horsepower when new and not 300). Still a lovely colour to look at! :) Concerning the exhaust: you can choose to do the "Gundo hack" on the original back boxes for a really deep rumble. It becomes louder but not too loud. My 996 got both the Gundo hack and the stainless steel tailpipes. I am so happy one of the previous owners decided to do the Gundo hack :)
Gundo hack would have been great for me had the factory silencers been in better condition. Thanks for the tip(!) on X54, I'll take a look at that. Glad to hear your 996 is hitting the spot!

They are the only dealer in the UK I'd buy a used Porsche from sight unseen, that's how much I rate them. It's best to buy a car with a few more miles on the clock when it comes to the 996, as any problems will likely have been rectified.
I’d say go for it...mine lives under a tree on the street, is covered in moss, cost me £6550 to buy 10 months ago and is immense fun on every journey! (I’ve tried to document it on a RUclips channel...just not very well)
The real beauty of the 996 is that you can improve all aspects of the driving experience ... The reality is though we won’t see much change if any from £10k, but I think you can build a car that is as near to a GT3 as damn it and definitely sounds better... just can’t afford those CSR conversions anymore 😢
Back in the day I could have bought an old air cooled 911 for 10k GBP and now look at the wacky prices for them. I think the days of 10k 996's are already over and people are growing very fond of them, myself included, and I bought one (2000 C2) last year, but for $40k AUD (about 20k GBP). If you want a good 996 you will have to pay good money and if you go cheep you get what you pay for. Bought my C2 03 eight years ago but all the cheap ones were shabby, got a top Porsche expert to do the inspection and still own the car but I had to pay for a good one.
Nice video man. I'm still contemplating making a change this year & selling my 968 Sport & hunting for a 996 Turbo. The prices have stabilized on these, can you foresee the Turbo taking another leap in value over the next few yrs?
Good video, I’m an ex 996 owner was s great car, I’m doing the Lambo thing now but just completed a Porsche vid so might get back into these. Lot of car for the money 👍
I’ve been staying away from the 996 mostly because those “fry eggs lights”, but for some reason now after see what happen with the new synthetic 992 model ..., I think I like it ...t is very analog and looks like the “heritage” GT1 !
I just bought a pretty decent example of a 01 996 at auction for only $7,200 here in the states. 6 speed C2 with 85k. Short clip of me installing the fabspeed exhaust on my channel.
I wouldnt recommend to put a lightweight clutch on it, if crankshaft and clutch aren't calibrated together.. Some owners experienced some pretty nasty stuff with it, like a broken crankshaft..
I love watching the progression and view from someone who’s actually been around enough 911’s to make comparisons to others. Here’s the real question, do you miss the C4S compared to the current C2?
Justin Mckeown Hi Both, I have owned both cars and would agree both have there merits. The gen1 996 (3.4) and my current C4S (3.6) both have their advantages. I always craved the Turbo look of the C4S and it’s sure footed driving application but at the same time there’s something about the rear wheel pure 911 set up that harks back to the original design/DNA of what these cars are all about. Btw: Good review as usual I like your honest approach based on your actual experience of owning and driving these car cars.
GT2, GT3 and then Turbo, the models that will rise in value most to least. IMS bearing failures not an issue with these models.Always hated on because of Boxster similarities but this was the rebirth of Porsche 911, water cooled and reliability here we come !! 997 a better car all round though.
I am buying 996 Carrera 2 auto tiptronic 40k mileage what advise would you give me regards price , auto or manual and is better to buy Carrera 2 or 4. Thanks jaz
Well that's good news then, if my 996 is not going up in value I guess I have to keep it. The horror! All kidding aside I love the car. If I have any engine issues a flat 6 rebuild will have to happen. Then it will be a bulletproof beast
Appreciate the honest review of the 996 and unfortunately from some of your noted points it shows the Japanese just enough or adequate engineering principles and costing..not the slightly over engineered Germanic approach of the day
Hy. You don't have a PORSCHE key ring? On the other hand, this colour is gorgeous. I forgive you. I have owned my Targa for 6 years and 60.000 km and I still appreciate it as much. The original shock absorbers and exhaust are more than enough for me. As you say, she does the job, for public roads. I can't wait for the diferent improvement you've planed this year.
The lowest you can get one for now is like 15k for a shitty one. I still have to save up a couple more months before I start looking. But I’m counting down the days!
Looks like some people are always trying to profiteer with Porsche prices, artificially creating a hype to make the prices go up. Now is the time to do that with the 996. A unwanted and cheap model before, now there is so many videos saying how good the 996 is! How we miss that? That’s hilarious.
hi lee, great video, I bought my first 996 a year ago ,3.4 1998 full Porsche s/h tip-tronic , found it to lack that punch , and the steering feels vague at speed , any advice you can offer me would be appreciated , great car otherwise and value for money .gareth
American market seems a little different it seems then as 996s have went up gradually over the past year / year and a half.. I've been in the market more seriously in just the past couple of years and already I kick myself as many good models have slipped though the fingers as I waited for the right one.... now I realize I should have bought one when market was better
The best condition lowest mileage original go up the most ... that’s a simple basic philosophy you will never regret reading& understanding plus me telling you
Sorry to burst your hope bubble, but the best you'll see from this, in superb condition and even with good spec is £15k. That is pushing it! But you can wish but don't hold your breath!
I disagree! Between 1997 and 2006 there were 175,262 996 units produced. In 1995 Nissan made 5,500 Nissan 300ZX, and they made 20,000 in 1990. Point is Nissan makes less Z cars than Porsche. So is a Z worth more? Porsche 996 don't have low production numbers which is why they are cheap like any mass produced vehicle.
Will the Gen 1 996 C2 ever go up in value? Dunno, hope so. If the 3.4 996 is an entry level 911, the upkeep and maintenance costs are certainly not entry level. How will I fare with a Gen 1 996 California car that was originally purchased by a family member just two years from new and passed onto yours truly (for 10k of course). Preventive maintenance consisted of a complete engine rebuild which includes an IMS SOLUTION along with a bump up from 3.4 to 3.8 and 350hp etc, etc,... It seems to me that with the number of 996’s that were produced, not many are kept to high standards nor are most upgraded beyond the search for a pleasing note of rumble from the tailpipe. Forget what Hagerty or the pundits have to say and rest with this tidbit. Any 996 that has had all of it’s engine ailments remedied, looked after, not sitting on a 20yr old suspension with equally aged water pipes and throughly sorted will not be denied it’s worth when it comes time to sell. The cars that don’t reach certain measuring sticks will always fall prey to market valuations. The one unique feature of owning one of these Porsche’s and cuts across the grain of most other cars is the ability to upgrade the performance and never lose a beat in terms of valuation. In other words, if you upgrade the car the price goes up with it.
As a couple of others have suggested, my seats were finished in optional 'ruffled leather', a truly awful option that didn't look good from new, let alone 21 years one. Avoid the ruffled look at all costs! My previous 996 didn't have ruffled leather and the seats were perfect, even with the same mileage on the clock as now.
Is so funny to see so called „experts“ on how they see price developments of their own cars or models… 🙈🙈This particular 996 will never ever grow in value, as it isn’t stock anymore, has high mileage, painted, etc. Further, there are simply by far too many 996 out there, hence a standard Carrera Gen1 will never ever become a good investment. Never! I propose to forget everything about 996 and value creation. Enjoy theses lovely cars and lets behapoy that the entry level into 911‘s is rather cheap. Cheers! 🍺🍺🍺
I own one and agree. I never bought the least 'collectable' 911 ever made as an 'investment'. I bought it because it's a lighter, narrower, more affordable, great driving car. End of story. Car ownership as an 'investment' is so divested from car ownership for the driving experience that IMHO the subjects are for two different types of people altogether. Sure, you'd like some money back when you sell it one day, but.......it's a car. For all but a *very* few examples, they go down in value. I keep mine stock, OEM as far as possible, factory serviced so far, and one day hopefully some enthusiast on a budget will get to enjoy this one.......if the M96 engine gods smile of course.
I’ve had mine for about seven years now. I’m the second owner. It’s worth what I paid for it still. What has definitely changed is that at 20 years of age it’s begun to look like a classic. Modern Porsche drivers sometimes flash their lights and give me a wave. I could imagine a modest uplift in price for good ones as the bad ones get so bad they’re broken up for spares. I love it.
Sam! You are entitled to your opinion but there's no place for nastiness on my channel. Too much of it elsewhere in the world, so let's keep it friendly.
Hey 3 months late but, great spec first of all. love the 996 for what it was but the car will continue to decline in price especially when you considered it's sandwiched between two of the most classically great and attainable models in the 993 and 997
And not to mention what's happening in the world right now, but could be a good time to buy because I can't see the 996 being so cheap forever, they definitely do have a following and it's only getting bigger
You bums ..they always go soft over Xmas and new year then strengthen when people see them on the streets in spring then summer . Wrong time to sell a Porsche especially a convert is winter unless it’s a new one in a OPC , best time spring
Can we please not raise value on another cool car. It's not like they buy them to enjoy them, they buy them to hoard them and treat them as collectibles and run prices into unreasonable territory.
With 175,000 made, I don't think there's any danger of the 996 reaching silly prices anytime soon! There's plenty of models out there for you to buy and enjoy at sensible prices.
@@9WERKSTV Tell that to every collector car that isn't a ferrari, lambo or low production number car. Those collectors don't care. they will run prices up on any car that becomes trendy
Enough already! We just don’t need another video telling us how good the 996 is and how we should all buy one please! A good one is a great car, equally a poor one is a money pit . They are liked by those who like them and disliked by those who don’t, simple. The bottom line is they are only worth what the man on the Clapham omnibus will pay, no more no less I own one and can speak from experience, please no more of the same🥴
Worthless once the C8 Corvette hits the U.K shores. I wouldn't buy another one unless you have deep pockets for repairs on this model. I heard the 997s were better but this thing has a engine design flaw that is waiting to happen. Not only that but it also has a tendency for oversteer that isnt the fun kind.
Corvette in name only. This new car will have every person in the U.K drooling for one. You should actually look at what you can get for 70k usd. Its ridiculous.
Wrong. Manual transmission and a back seat for kids, dogs, or stuff and is easy to parallel park when needed. C8 is fab but that is new and $45k more. Not the correct comparison at all.
The 996 is without doubt a low point in the 911 lineage. In fact, it's awful. IMS lotto, RMS leaks, bore scoring, dreadfully cheap interior and blobby Nemo the fish styling. The only thing going for the car is initial purchase affordability, otherwise it's a lame duck.
I owned the same car and to be honest. It sux. I wouldn't recommend it to anybody. Instead of spending all that money on a crappy 996, buy a mint Mini Cooper. The Mini does everything better than a Porsche. Period.

I’ve been staying away from the 996 mostly because those “fry eggs lights”, but for some reason now after see what happen with the new synthetic 992 model ..., I think I like it ...t is very analog and looks like the “heritage” GT1 !
Think a few people have been doing that! Glad you're starting to come round to the car…
I just bought a pretty decent example of a 01 996 at auction for only $7,200 here in the states. 6 speed C2 with 85k. Short clip of me installing the fabspeed exhaust on my channel.
Nice one Ben!
wow
I wouldnt recommend to put a lightweight clutch on it, if crankshaft and clutch aren't calibrated together.. Some owners experienced some pretty nasty stuff with it, like a broken crankshaft..
I love watching the progression and view from someone who’s actually been around enough 911’s to make comparisons to others. Here’s the real question, do you miss the C4S compared to the current C2?
Cheers Justin! Fantastic question. I do REALLY miss that C4S, I only sold it to buy a house, otherwise it'd still be on the drive…
@@nicktaylor8767 Completely agree with you, Nick. Amazing how both models offer completely different interpretations of the 996 generation.
I like that duck tail and color combo.
Thanks Sean!
GT2, GT3 and then Turbo, the models that will rise in value most to least. IMS bearing failures not an issue with these models.Always hated on because of Boxster similarities but this was the rebirth of Porsche 911, water cooled and reliability here we come !! 997 a better car all round though.
... Also GT3 RS & Turbo S .
I am buying 996 Carrera 2 auto tiptronic 40k mileage what advise would you give me regards price , auto or manual and is better to buy Carrera 2 or 4. Thanks jaz
Come along and do a comparison with my 10 months of ownership of the cheapest 996 in the UK. Mine is shabby as hell but I love it just as it is 🤓👍🏼
Where are you based? Anca? Drop me a message on Instagram!
That Nine Eleven Guy message sent 😊👍🏼
996, it's now or never...
Man you ain't kidding
Seriously, people need to get into these (although o don’t think they’ll go up much). Got mine for £6550 and I love it!
Well that's good news then, if my 996 is not going up in value I guess I have to keep it. The horror! All kidding aside I love the car. If I have any engine issues a flat 6 rebuild will have to happen. Then it will be a bulletproof beast
Enjoy that 996, Rick!
Suspension on these costs buttons, buy Meyle arms (which are what the OEM's are) without Porsche stickers under 100 pounds
Excellent and informative
Cheers Alan.
Appreciate the honest review of the 996 and unfortunately from some of your noted points it shows the Japanese just enough or adequate engineering principles and costing..not the slightly over engineered Germanic approach of the day
Cheers Jason. It was a funny time for Porsche. Ultimately the company survived but you can tell the 996 hails from when it was most broke.
I used to! Then the dog got it. Porsche keyring is no more! Appreciate your comments and support as always, thank you.
If you're taking suggestions, some RUF 5-spoke wheels would look great on your car. I know they are pretty expensive.
Consider it considered! Cheers Otto.
The lowest you can get one for now is like 15k for a shitty one. I still have to save up a couple more months before I start looking. But I’m counting down the days!
Love that ducktail, which one is it? Great vid BTW
Thanks! It's the CSR carbon fibre ducktail.
@@9WERKSTV No expense spared - I like it!
Great cars
Those black radiator air intake-shrouds in the front look new - or did you paint/refinish them somehow? Mine are looking grey and horrible!
I had them painted when the car underwent its colour change last year. They came out grey from factory FYI, not the best look in my eyes.
Looks like some people are always trying to profiteer with Porsche prices, artificially creating a hype to make the prices go up. Now is the time to do that with the 996. A unwanted and cheap model before, now there is so many videos saying how good the 996 is! How we miss that? That’s hilarious.
Finally the ugly duckling becomes a swan.
hi lee, great video, I bought my first 996 a year ago ,3.4 1998 full Porsche s/h tip-tronic , found it to lack that punch , and the steering feels vague at speed , any advice you can offer me would be appreciated , great car otherwise and value for money .gareth
Could be worn out shocks making your steering feel less confident
American market seems a little different it seems then as 996s have went up gradually over the past year / year and a half.. I've been in the market more seriously in just the past couple of years and already I kick myself as many good models have slipped though the fingers as I waited for the right one.... now I realize I should have bought one when market was better
I think it's the same here in the UK to be honest. Good cars are hard to find now!
The best condition lowest mileage original go up the most ... that’s a simple basic philosophy you will never regret reading& understanding plus me telling you
we need to meet up for a cuppa one day as I share you enthusiasm for the 996 and also I am fairly local
Sounds good! Drop me a message on Instagram and let's organise.
Informative thanks.
My pleasure, Jerome.
I am about to sell the UKs best condition 996 C4S which means values are bound to rocket as soon as it leaves the driveway.
Ahahaha! Always the way.

Great
What about some nice tartan material to spruce up that interior ?
I am looking to a buy a 2001, 3 owner with 58k . Great service and ims has been done. 38k
I just got offered £2k less than I did last year for my 996 at the same garage, so no they're not going up at all. That's in the south of England.
Your garage is having your pants down then, James!
I hope so I just bought a 2003 Targa with 60 thou km’s

Well spotted. Lol! 👍
The way the leather in the seats has sagged looks horrid. Is that normal for its age/model as my 86 944Turbo doesn’t have that issue.
My 05 996 seats look perfect. Not all of em!
Rick Dietrich thanks Rick. Perhaps his car has had water damage or something as those seats look dreadful, something had definitely happened there.
Depends on the amount of previous owners and there weight.
The ruffled leather looks poor full stop and never ages well.
@@colinwatson4172 Agreed, Colin!
Just sold my 996. Prices dropped, looks like nobody wants the 996 :-(
workshop_deluxe how much you sold it for ? was it running
I disagree on the seats. I own a 996 and 997. The 997 interior looks better but the 996 seats feel better
Cheers! 🍺🍺🍺
One more expert opinion 😂
I love it.
Nooo! They can't go up in price before I get mine!! 😆
Word of warning on that suspension test he does at 1:23 - I did that on my 996 and it left a dent 🤬
Once hated, but soon we'll look back and say "wow, i could have got one for $10k".
Good on point vid this ill subscribe to your page
Thank you Rhys!
Nice video. It’s still has the bad reputation and the values show.
Magnus Walker has just bought his second 996 in as many months. I think he knows that they're not going to be such great value for much longer
Sam! You are entitled to your opinion but there's no place for nastiness on my channel. Too much of it elsewhere in the world, so let's keep it friendly.
Magnus is a good bloke!
I could be wrong, he may have 3 now, think he got a gt2 the other day
Hey 3 months late but, great spec first of all. love the 996 for what it was but the car will continue to decline in price especially when you considered it's sandwiched between two of the most classically great and attainable models in the 993 and 997
And not to mention what's happening in the world right now, but could be a good time to buy because I can't see the 996 being so cheap forever, they definitely do have a following and it's only getting bigger
Prices are still going down here in the usa
Not in Florida, prices are slowly starting to pick up
You bums ..they always go soft over Xmas and new year then strengthen when people see them on the streets in spring then summer .
Wrong time to sell a Porsche especially a convert is winter unless it’s a new one in a OPC , best time spring

@@CarMikeReviews the 996c4s is the best deal across the 911 platform. But the 997.1 is were the true value is. Take a look at some 997 first gen.
Update: they are crashing in price.
What does crashing means? They go up or down? Can you be more understandable in your posts?
The bottom line is they are only worth what the man on the Clapham omnibus will pay, no more no less
I own one and can speak from experience, please no more of the same🥴
Sorry Jennifer, this channel might not be for you in that case!
We're not that hot for Corvettes over here, I can't see people defecting!
Corvette in name only. This new car will have every person in the U.K drooling for one. You should actually look at what you can get for 70k usd. Its ridiculous.
@@thiosemicarbizidebenzoylal2921 Sorry but they just don't get recognition over here.
Wrong. Manual transmission and a back seat for kids, dogs, or stuff and is easy to parallel park when needed. C8 is fab but that is new and $45k more. Not the correct comparison at all.
WD 40 will sort that suspension 😣😎😜
The 996 is without doubt a low point in the 911 lineage. In fact, it's awful. IMS lotto, RMS leaks, bore scoring, dreadfully cheap interior and blobby Nemo the fish styling. The only thing going for the car is initial purchase affordability, otherwise it's a lame duck.
you are clearly went with the wrong car!
Nope
