In 2009 I spent a long weekend with a 997 tiptronic convertible; my first Porsche drive since my air-cooled days of 1973. Then, as shop floor manager of the Brooklyn (NY) Porsche/Audi dealership, I made it my job to road test all cars before handing the keys back to the customer. And so, my future automotive ambition was crystallised … one day! It was early autumn as we drove south from Auckland to The Coromandel (I moved to New Zealand in 2005). It wasn’t long before we’d turned off the motorway onto fast flowing traffic free roads. The power, the response, the ride, the steering, the communication. Our grins grew broader by the mile. It’s my wife in the passenger seat; she of a nervous disposition and a staunch Beetle fan … ‘at least the engine’s in the right place’, she concedes. The whole weekend was such a blast that by the time we got home we'd fallen in love all over again, faces aching, we thought we might afford one (my lady having enjoyed her time as a ‘fast woman’ behind the wheel) … and I having assured her it was a sound investment. There were a few 997’s for sale, but all tiptronic, soft tops, autos or silly dealer prices and I’m not wealthy and never want to be, just fortunate. Then, a tempting little number in Christchurch … coupe, manual, low mileage (kms), immaculate, full dealer history, 996 C2 (2003)… in cobalt blue. Reasonable price, been on the market for several weeks, open to negotiation, perhaps? So, I flew down the next morning having arranged a test in the afternoon. I heard her coming before she arrived … Hahaha! … the old ones are the best! A cursory inspection and off we go. I was soon behind the wheel. Lovely gearbox … clutch a bit heavy (will need renewing) … had the IMS done? No. Rear seal? No. Check the service record, all pukka. So, I estimate I’ll need to spend around $5/7k nz to bring her up to spec. He’s not sure. Well … my plane leaves in 50 minutes. So we shake on $6k off the asking price … and I’m on my way, a 1000 kms home. So what’s the difference between a 997, albeit tipronic, and a 996 2 manual. Massive. The 997 was a wonderful reintroduction to Porsche. It’s a superb piece of engineering and an obvious upgrade in terms of comfort over the 996. The ride is more compliant, but the road is further away. The steering is pin point, but without the same feedback. The interior is more modern although not ‘hewn from granite’ like the old air boys. The car is more of a GT than the previous model, and that progresses throughout the modern range. And I’m too old for the past, too young for the new, so the 996 sits well. After just a few kms, I knew I’d made the right choice. You see, if I go back to those adrenalin rushes of my first 911 experiences, the 996 is a natural progression. She’s a real 911. She’s light weight and the right size. She communicates through your seat, the wheel, the ride is more sporting yet still compliant. Catapulting out of curves she’s an animal, albeit a safer one (PSM) and so much faster. She’s so much fun. And the sound of the sports exhaust between 3 and 7k … Wagner! As for the lights. They’re gorgeous; from GT1 to turbo. Get thee behind me you airheads! I’ve owned my 996 for 12 years now and in that time I’ve replaced clutch, IMS, rear seals and given the engine a total overhaul (almost rebuild). Mostly preventive maintenance, but that engine laid bare on the work bench is beauty to behold. With a remapped ECU to run on 98/100 octane she produces 360 bhp on the dyno and 299 fpt. With this upgrade the power difference is obvious. Linear acceleration from 1000 rpm to around 5000, when all hell breaks loose, as well as noticeable gains in fuel economy. Brakes and callipers, shocks and tyres of course (michelins are best). And, if you haven’t already … get a tailor made mesh (aftermarket) for the front radiators. (Design911). It’s a manufacturer oversight. I picked two small birds out of mine before fitting. And it looks so cool when you get on down. Driving this car is always an event, whether flying through the twists and turns, howling up the mountain passes, cruising round the lakes of The South Island (where I now live) or popping down to the shops, it always feels special. She doesn’t shout ‘look at me’. Her lines are a clean aerodynamic sculpture. A thing of beauty. Automotive art. Take a bow, Pinky Lai. Anyway, must go before I start eulogising … time to collect her ladyship from the airport. Now, what shall I take? The Honda hybrid or Porky? … decisions … decisions.

Congrats! I have owned a 996 Targa 2002 6 speed since purchasing it new. I finally just had my IMS bearing changed a month ago . It has been a great car, very low maintanance and I still love driving it. It has 28 k miles and looks brand new.. The drive, the look and its smaller size is very appealing.. Welcome to the club, cars don't get any better then a 996.2! Absolutely love mine, so easy to live with and use everyday. Every trip out is sublime especially when you see the reflection in a shop windows.
I was in the market for a 911 for a while and had some mildly different requirements (I love convertibles) and did consider late 996s and 997.1s as there were way more manuals around, but was lucky enough to find a 997.2 C2S manual convertible that provides me with the similar thrills that you describe - being an open top, it is just a blast on B roads, such a great cross-continent roadtrip car. Given I drive a family hauler (plug-in hybrid) during the week to school and work, getting behind the wheel of the 911 is an occasion that does not get old one year into ownership! Keep enjoying it!
What a great choice. Loved the i3 content but really looking forward to updates on the Porsche. It's what I would love to do but never quite have the guts - Heart says go for it, Head says think about servicing costs, tyre costs etc and I never do it. Having said all that, now off to check out the classifieds!
Cracking video as I really fancy a 996, you've done all the due diligence I'd do and I'm fed up of contemporary cars! Mind you I'm torn between this or a W129 SL500. Back in the day I drove for a week an AX GT it was utterly awesome! Try and find one now...
The 996 designer was way ahead of many, a genius. The Le Mans racing take on style is awesome. It really is the best of the old and new all in one. A rock solid urban all weather icon with a great spartan so typical porsche interior but very comfortable and if you can get the PCCM as well then you've got it all, again the essences of the old and new. I went from a brand new 997 S to the more Porsche raw 996 they are so unique with substance and character to enjoy...A great vid indeed.
I'm so glad to hear you say the gearbox is a bit stiff when cold. I just got my first Porsche, a 986 boxster. The gearbox has loosened up as I've driven it the last couple of weeks but I was still a little nervous of whether I had a dodgy box or not. Hearing someone else say the same makes me less worried.
Great review and have a Porsche Cayman 987 and would like to upgrade to a 911 997. Noticed when you did your oil check it was above top. I topped up my oil and managed to do the same. Hopefully no problems will occur with a bit too much oil. They burn so much oil quickly that it will be down to normal level soon
Dad used to have a boxster 986 3.2s and that soundtrack. I remember when he let me drive it. Sounds a lot faster than it actually is, which is a good thing as you get to hear the sound longer. That hydraulic Porsche steering too was lovely. That's now been replaced by an SLK 55 AMG which has an engine with even more character and performance but feels more like a hot rod in comparison with that heavy V8 up front. Interior of the 986 pretty much was lifted from the 996 too although yours does look a little classier.
Nice car, congrats on your purchase. We've had a similar car history, with my wife having an AX GT & myself a 309 GTI in the passed. Never had a 911, but I spent 10yrs recently in a 968 Sport. Was tempted by a 996 Turbo, but ended up with a BMW 1m instead.
This is why everyone here loves the 996. Have had a targa for six years and I love it every day. Every time I contemplate moving on and selling it my unconscious mind tells me "no!"..... I hope you continue to enjoy it for many years to come.

@@Olithecabby because this particular car was too good to not buy and keep, it still is. Rare spec , mint condition well looked after etc , I would of preferred a c2 for more rwd fun ( been there done that though) but c4s are still great fun drives if you know how to drive them and deal with the slight understeer, I’ve grown to love it, switchable exhaust sound never gets switched to quiet !
I was so disappointed to hear you were selling the i3 but what a move haha. Great choice and hope you enjoy. Although as an aside, watching the previous i3 video, great man maths and logic for changing cars. We're all so similar. Create some problems to convince ourselves that we need to change 🤣
Got the 996 C2 manual 3.6 with Ohlins r/t. If you can, fit new coilovers on these cars. It tranforms it from a great car to an amazing car and one of the most fun cars out there. Totally addictive!

I’ve got a ‘99 911/996 Cabriolet, 6 speed. I absolutely love my car. It handles so well, very responsive and just plain fun. I’m closing in on 127,000 miles and it just runs strong! The intermediate shaft bearing was replaced at 119,000 miles, along with a new clutch, shocks and tires. Just had to replace the hydraulic rams so my top would go up and down. Otherwise, it’s just had basic maintenance - oil changes, brake pads etc. I just love my 996/911. Oh, it has had a vinyl wrap in arctic white so it looks terrific and like brand new!!
Great video. I sold my ‘00 996 black Cabriolet last week with 98,500 miles. It gave me 3 1/2 years of pure enjoyment, but with the prices on the rise I sold it for $26k and I paid $18k for it when had 88,500 miles. It was getting dangerously close to the dreaded 100k mileage stigma. I knew it was time. After three days without a 911 in my garage I wasted little time, and bought a ‘99 that looks a whole like this one (same rims too) with 69k miles. I will not miss having a black car, and having a coupe with a sunroof will also be a welcome change. Also, the ‘99 has a short shifter upgrade which I’m loving. Life without a 911…not something I’m comfortable with anymore. 🤣
2002 996 Targa is my daily… weekend… short trip… long trip… all trip… hatchback… moments of fun… longer moments of fun… too much fun… diy… you get the idea… (:

Im fortunate to own a 996 C2 and a 996 4s. Both of them provide me with great pleasure every time I go for a spin. ( not to mention the best 911 water cooled sound with the original PSE installed ☺️) More than likely these words spread fast …✌️The 996 will be appreciated and desired the longer these new cars out there feel so digital😉
I have almost the same car and went in with the same requirements: C2, broken in, but not excessive mileage, and a manual. I love mine. It's an '02 and I've put about 14k over the 3 years I've owned it. I put the PCCM head unit in mine and love having apple car play. Have you had any issues with the car popping out of second? That's my next item to fix...and it's not going to be cheap. I love how docile this car is when driven at low revs, and how that all changes when you get your foot into it. My kids (6 and 2) also climb in the back and love "pulling G's" on the twisties.
I just got my 996 last Saturday 02 6-speed. Took it to the mountains on Monday. Absolutely the most fun car I've ever driven. And I also have a 986s Boxster which is a great car also. But there's just something about the 996
-German compact -RWD -Rear engine -Lightweight construction Staggered wheel/tire sizing -Petrol door on front fender -Seats 4 Sounds like the i3 & 911 are cousins. Congrats on the subtle and nicely optioned 996!
Like mine but its had so many parts replaced, never known a car wear out so many parts. Rads , most AC parts , most of the suspension, pipes, seals, even the horn failed. Rain leaks, coil packs abs sensor, the list goes on. This are the common parts that go, so its not even mine is unlucky. Luckily I do it all myself I spend more time fixing it than driving it.
Nice congrats on the purchase. Presumably the i3 had replaced the A2? Love to know what mpg you are seeing on the 996 as I’m spending rather a lot of time looking at them myself!

As he says, the best you can afford and make sure it's got the history, ims bearing in my opinion is overhyped as a failure point but that said the guy I bought from had a deal with a specialist and did new ims, seal and sachs clutch kit @£1250 so it's got that too! Otherwise check the options fitted from factory and lean towards desirable colour combinations to help resale value, if ever you can part with it!
especially, since you can get a new porsche headunit/satnav installed that looks like it was originally supplied with the car, and has all the modern features.
Great car if you buy wisely. I have one, a 5 speed,tiptronic, (don't knock them!). I can change gear when I want or leave in Drive. I don't have to actually bother moving my hand and leg to do it.
The Tiptronic is totally under appreciated. Not as quick as a PDK, obviously, but a good and responsive autobox. I used mine as a daily driver for years and I’m sure I would have got fed up with a manual. Still a blast on a good road. It manages just fine with five ratios
I've been shopping around for a 997 since it is the only Porsche I could possibly afford and it loses the 'egg' shaped headlights (that I personally don't mind). Repairs and maintenance does scare me as I know that something as simple as an electric window actuator can cost $$$. Engine repairs even more. My Mark VI GTI's engine went out at 135k. It would have cost $5500 to repair on a car that was barely worth 6k at the time. Still, wish I'd bit the bullet and fixed it. That was the best car I've even owned!
Really you passed up on Electric for this gas guzzler Porsche? But what a car you have there and I can see why you decided upon it, not that I would have but then I'm older and somewhat wary of fast cars. Cheers for sharing.

I'm 57 and I think life's too short to be driving something you don't want to drive other than when you need to get from A to B. Great review and have a Porsche Cayman 987 and would like to upgrade to a 911 997. Noticed when you did your oil check it was above top. I topped up my oil and managed to do the same. Hopefully no problems will occur with a bit too much oil. They burn so much oil quickly that it will be down to normal level soon

Dad used to have a boxster 986 3.2s and that soundtrack. I remember when he let me drive it. Sounds a lot faster than it actually is, which is a good thing as you get to hear the sound longer. That hydraulic Porsche steering too was lovely. That's now been replaced by an SLK 55 AMG which has an engine with even more character and performance but feels more like a hot rod in comparison with that heavy V8 up front. Interior of the 986 pretty much was lifted from the 996 too although yours does look a little classier.
Nice car, congrats on your purchase. We've had a similar car history, with my wife having an AX GT & myself a 309 GTI in the passed. Never had a 911, but I spent 10yrs recently in a 968 Sport. Was tempted by a 996 Turbo, but ended up with a BMW 1m instead.

This is why everyone here loves the 996. Have had a targa for six years and I love it every day. Every time I contemplate moving on and selling it my unconscious mind tells me "no!"..... I hope you continue to enjoy it for many years to come.

Was thinking of selling my 996 c4 manual until I took it out for a spirited drive, then I realised how great it is . I’d regret selling it for sure.

@@Olithecabby because this particular car was too good to not buy and keep, it still is. Rare spec , mint condition well looked after etc , I would of preferred a c2 for more rwd fun ( been there done that though) but c4s are still great fun drives if you know how to drive them and deal with the slight understeer, I’ve grown to love it, switchable exhaust sound never gets switched to quiet !

Got the 996 C2 manual 3.6 with Ohlins r/t. If you can, fit new coilovers on these cars. It tranforms it from a great car to an amazing car and one of the most fun cars out there. Totally addictive!

I’ve got a ‘99 911/996 Cabriolet, 6 speed. I absolutely love my car. It handles so well, very responsive and just plain fun. I’m closing in on 127,000 miles and it just runs strong! The intermediate shaft bearing was replaced at 119,000 miles, along with a new clutch, shocks and tires. Just had to replace the hydraulic rams so my top would go up and down. Otherwise, it’s just had basic maintenance - oil changes, brake pads etc.
I just love my 996/911. Oh, it has had a vinyl wrap in arctic white so it looks terrific and like brand new!!

Great video. I sold my ‘00 996 black Cabriolet last week with 98,500 miles. It gave me 3 1/2 years of pure enjoyment, but with the prices on the rise I sold it for $26k and I paid $18k for it when had 88,500 miles. It was getting dangerously close to the dreaded 100k mileage stigma. I knew it was time.
After three days without a 911 in my garage I wasted little
time, and bought a ‘99 that looks a whole like this one (same rims too) with 69k miles.
I will not miss having a black car, and having a coupe with a sunroof will also be a welcome change. Also, the ‘99 has a short shifter upgrade which I’m loving.
Life without a 911…not something I’m comfortable with anymore. 🤣

Im fortunate to own a 996 C2 and a 996 4s. Both of them provide me with great pleasure every time I go for a spin. ( not to mention the best 911 water cooled sound with the original PSE installed ☺️)

I have almost the same car and went in with the same requirements: C2, broken in, but not excessive mileage, and a manual. I love mine. It's an '02 and I've put about 14k over the 3 years I've owned it. I put the PCCM head unit in mine and love having apple car play. Have you had any issues with the car popping out of second? That's my next item to fix...and it's not going to be cheap.
I love how docile this car is when driven at low revs, and how that all changes when you get your foot into it. My kids (6 and 2) also climb in the back and love "pulling G's" on the twisties.
I just got my 996 last Saturday 02 6-speed. Took it to the mountains on Monday. Absolutely the most fun car I've ever driven. And I also have a 986s Boxster which is a great car also. But there's just something about the 996

Like mine but its had so many parts replaced, never known a car wear out so many parts. Rads , most AC parts , most of the suspension, pipes, seals, even the horn failed. Rain leaks, coil packs abs sensor, the list goes on. This are the common parts that go, so its not even mine is unlucky. Luckily I do it all myself I spend more time fixing it than driving it.
About i3, nothing needs to be warm up? Except interior on cold winter days? Maybe?

I get 22-23 just running around and 26-27 out on the interstate running 75 or so. Just a wonderful car.

As he says, the best you can afford and make sure it's got the history, ims bearing in my opinion is overhyped as a failure point but that said the guy I bought from had a deal with a specialist and did new ims, seal and sachs clutch kit @£1250 so it's got that too!
Otherwise check the options fitted from factory and lean towards desirable colour combinations to help resale value, if ever you can part with it!

These pre-shyt-nav interiors have actually aged quite nicely. Nothing worse than a cockpit with a gen 1 "infotainment" system.
especially, since you can get a new porsche headunit/satnav installed that looks like it was originally supplied with the car, and has all the modern features.
Great car if you buy wisely. I have one, a 5 speed,tiptronic, (don't knock them!). I can change gear when I want or leave in Drive. I don't have to actually bother moving my hand and leg to do it.
The Tiptronic is totally under appreciated. Not as quick as a PDK, obviously, but a good and responsive autobox. I used mine as a daily driver for years and I’m sure I would have got fed up with a manual. Still a blast on a good road. It manages just fine with five ratios

I've been shopping around for a 997 since it is the only Porsche I could possibly afford and it loses the 'egg' shaped headlights (that I personally don't mind). Repairs and maintenance does scare me as I know that something as simple as an electric window actuator can cost $$$. Engine repairs even more. My Mark VI GTI's engine went out at 135k. It would have cost $5500 to repair on a car that was barely worth 6k at the time. Still, wish I'd bit the bullet and fixed it. That was the best car I've even owned!
Really you passed up on Electric for this gas guzzler Porsche? But what a car you have there and I can see why you decided upon it, not that I would have but then I'm older and somewhat wary of fast cars. Cheers for sharing.
You're watching a car video, so I assume you must be at least somewhat into cars. I hope that whatever car you own, it makes you want to just go for a drive. I'm 57 and I think life's too short to be driving something you don't want to drive other than when you need to get from A to B. Modern cars have so much nanny tech that you shouldn't be wary of fast cars, not that even the basic current 911 is that fast, relatively speaking. And running costs are nothing out of the ordinary, either.
