    Stumbled in here (thanks RUclips algorithm). I've been an "expat" since 1969, when at age 9, my Single Black mother got fed up with America and moved us to Brazil. After a few years in Brazil (Recife), then to Portugal, then to Kenya during the early 1970's. As an indirect and unintentional result, I have 3 passports/citizenships. This is nothing "new and novel" for me. I have been to 77 Countries and lived for more than 2 years in 5 of them. Over the last 14 years we have been splitting time between Malaysia, Morocco, and the States.
    With that said, it is my position that any relocation/out-migration is 100% an entirely _Individual_ decision. No place is perfect, thus its ALL about "trade-offs" at the _Individual_ level. Some locations become "popular" and "en vouge" for the American Diaspora. A Follow-the-blind-heard mentality will almost always be a disaster. In the Modern world, there is no longer a need to live in one place permanently. Good luck.

    I think you should both return to the Dominican Republic. I was just in Cabarete beach town near Puerto Plata and Sosua and also went to Santiago and its a truth paradise. I think we will be happy to see you back in the DR soon. Quality of living including food in the Dominican Republic is one of the highest I've seemed in Latin America and Asia. You get absolutely great food in the DR.

      I know you are, but I think that video somehow was a great reflection. I still think the DR a better place than Portugal because in Europe fresh fruits and veggies are not easy to get. ( I used to live in Spain and I've been to Portugal as well). Also, the cost of living in the DR is cheaper and its only 3:20mns away from NYC where I'm from. Lastly, It seems you guys have something against the DR. I can read between the lines. I think you need to move forward and completely forget about the DR and stop comparing it to portugal. I'm retiring in Cabarete which is very safe, breathtaken beaches and affordable. Good luck. @@CaribbeanE

    I am from Portugal and my husband is Dominican I agree with the video Portugal quality of living and Safety is better and the beaches are beautiful.
    But If you find the "right place" to live in the Dominican Republic its also great. We like the eco of the grid living there in our finca with the animals and the fruits are out of this world!!!
    I prefer the Cooler weather in Portugal. Summer in the DR are too Hot. Both the Portuguese and the Dominicans are great people. But Portugal is always my favorite place to live.

    We have following your channel for while. We just retired in the DR, currently in Santiago but moving to Las Terrenas in September. We don’t disagree with your statistics, I think they’re right! We are native Dominicans and been traveling here at least every other year and I must say it is no longer the bargain it once was. We find dining out now, specifically, is as pricey as the US. Use to be about 60% less and now I would say maybe 20% less , maybe even lower. Yes, you could find inexpensive dining, but I talking about higher quality food. They now added an 18% tax on dining and an additional 10% TBIS, which is a service tax for the Waiter. Definitely not the bargain it once was, but there are many things I really do like, like not dealing with a corrupt media and hate fermenting in the US.

    Good to see you both. numbers look great. I think you made a wise choice. However i'm wondering how things would have been for you two in Puerto Rico but not in a major city where it's expensive as hell but away from all the tourist like maybe 2 min drive inland and you purchased or rented a house?

      We definitely considered moving to Puerto Rico, but with the failures of the infrastructure, the issues due to storms, and are wanting to explore countries far away. We decided it would be more frugal to live closer to where we wanted to travel constantly. Puerto Rico will always be number one to us, but there is a huge Spaniard community in Puerto Rico and in Spain there are a lot of Puerto Ricans as well.

    Hello to all; I heard that Portugal will be ending a hefty tax break for foreigners in 2024, which was one of the many incentives that expats wanted to move there. Have you guys heard about this tax break going away? The tax Non-Habitual Residency (NHR) Tax allows one to live in Portugal for over 10 years at a flat tax rate of 20 percent. That is a big deal if that goes away.

    • @CaribbeanE

      @pedroelfuerte2572 7 месяцев назад +1

      @CaribbeanE I believe that this will be a game-changer in regards to ex-pats moving to Portugal. However, I did here if you already had that particular visa prior to the program being stopped, you will be grandfathered into the previous agreement.

    • @pedroelfuerte2572
      @pedroelfuerte2572 7 месяцев назад +1

      You should probably let folks know about this big change regarding the TAX SITUATION

    • @CaribbeanE
      @CaribbeanE  7 месяцев назад

      You had to apply for the tax break before 90 days completed in country so those that have it keep it. It is not tied to a visa: It is not usually the only factor motivating people to move so it hasn’t changed most people’s minds.

      Safety ratings often is full of crap. It's heavily a white standard. Now safety can also vary by gender and skin color depending on where you travel. So a white person traveling to certain countries might not be safe compared to a darker skinned person who might blend in with the people. However there are some disaster zones. Also when you have American money vs a different country traveling can make a difference. USA dollars =target
