  • USA vs Portugal. Josh and Kalie from ExpatsEverywhere have lived the expat life since 2009. They now live in Portugal and explain why they decided to leave the USA for life as a foreigner in Porto. Josh and Kalie each give two reasons why they chose Portugal and then they give some bonus information on things they didn't know before they moved there and what you should know before you go, whether to live or to visit. Although Josh and Kalie had visited Portugal many times when they lived in Spain, they knew it would be different living there so that's what they talk about.
We created a Moving to Portugal on a D7 Visa Guide (US-based)
    Check it out here: expatseverywhere.thinkific.com
Josh and Kalie have lived in several different countries and are sharing why they left the US for life as expats in a different country. Check out the playlist here: • Why We Left The US

    Great info, guys.
I´m Portuguese, so if you need any cultural explanations, hit me up.
Btw, I know what you mean by "laidback" as I have an international background... But to quickly explain this: Portugal lived under a fascist dictatorship regime for almost 50 years, which explains so much bureaucracy (the urge to keep things under control so that they don´t go wrong again). On the other hand, let´s not confuse this with being lazy! (Portugal has the second highest working hours/week in Europe!) But yes, it does feel like Portuguese people want to appreciate the little moments, such as having a coffee. The fact that it is cheaper than the rest of western Europe makes it fantastic for expats like you guys!
Welcome, and make sure to convince more people to move here... we need more people.

Thank you so much, Tomas. We appreciate it. We appreciate open-minded welcoming people like you. The pros vastly outweigh the cons when it comes to living in Portugal for us. We're a little scared to buy a house that needs work though because we've heard horror stories of people trying to fix up an apartment or villa here. 😅 Relaxing during the little moments is very important to us especially now with a little one. We're blessed to be here and watch our daughter grow up.
Judging by the emails and comment section, we've got a few people coming behind us. 😉 All the ones we've spoken to seem to be good people. The good expats/immigrants that a country would like to have. They bring money, don't need a local job, want to learn Portuguese language and culture, and are ready to enjoy life in their host country. - Josh & Kalie

That is fantastic, and hopefully you will manage to network well in Porto.
Considering that Lisbon and Porto have become hotspots for International investment in real/estate, especially in the luxury segment, much of the building companies have become better because of the competition.
However, you mustn't go with any contractor here in Portugal. Make sure you talk to many people who can recommend you one, until you find one that suits best with your expectations. Especially because you aren't looking for a high-end contractor, and rather a more affordable one that can build a nice home for you. If you manage your patience and find the right people, you might just get an excellent project!
Portugal really is, undoubtedly, one of the very best places to raise children.
      Goodluck!

One important thing when it comes to cafés, which is normal for me as portuguese, but I've known foreigners that were shocked because I didn't know it was a problem.
There are a lot of smokers in Portugal, so when going to a café check the cigarette sticker at the entrance. If it's red, it's a non-smoker café, if it's blue it's a smoker café. Good luck!

Welcome to Porto and Portugal! I live in Guimarães close by (first city of Portugal)
It's nice to see expats in other places besides Lisbon or the Algarve region.
An advice to expats wanting to come here:
If you like coastal cities we have a lot of gems along the whole coast with every amenity and fast to reach any of the big cities.
If you like water/rivers and nature, lots of cities further in are becoming top quality places to live.
We ARE small :D so if you're not in Porto, Lisbon or Algarve, you can be in really wonderful cities 40 min from these 3.

Enjoying all the information you guys have given through your videos. I really want to move once this pandemic is over but as a single woman I’m admittedly nervous (and excited). So many questions...will I miss my family? Will I make friends? Will I be able to support myself by teaching online? I do know one thing for sure is that I am craving a slower lifestyle, a different way to live and appreciate the world around me. Thank you for answering questions and giving real information; I look forward to future videos all about Portugal 🇵🇹.

Thank you. We're glad you're enjoying it. We would personally recommend it and know single ladies that are here. In fact, a few of them are single moms. We can't answer the miss your family questions but technology like Skype or FaceTime has helped us tremendously with staying connected. It does take a little effort on both parts but try to schedule a time each week to chat. Will you make friends? That's sort of personal but if you're asking if people are friendly and is it easy to make friends, we would say absolutely, yes! Both expats and Portuguese can and will become your friend depending on your effort and comfort level. There are so many interest groups in Porto and Lisbon. If you're in a smaller town, it's still possible but the pool will be smaller if you know what we mean. Supporting yourself teaching...if you're making €1,500 per month from teaching, you can do it. In some places you can do it on less, at that point it comes down to where you're living and what level of accommodation you have. Again, we appreciate the support and kind words about our videos. We aim to give real information and to be as helpful to people as we can. - Josh & Kalie

So looking forward to making our way to Porto and Lisbon this summer, fingers crossed!! My wife, who is Bulgarian, and recently became a US citizen, is beginning to realize that our time in the states wont will come to an end, one day. If only retirement were here already!! I have been there with her four times with her so far, visiting with her family and touring certain parts of the country. That will hopefully be another destination this summer. There is definitely a lot of history there; both good and bad, but you really cannot beat the cost of living! Seems to have the same 'pace of life' as Portugal, which I continue to be drawn to more and more. Primary issue though is that outside of the major cities English is not that widespread, and my Bulgarian is quite limited! Summer weather is incredible but winters can be a bit harsh.

What I don’t get with these vids is that US citizen can not just up and move to Europe. You must have a visa if you stay in country over 90 days, and then once you apply for visa it’s only for a certain number of years and it’s a step by step process that can take up to 10 years. So seems to me saying oh we up and moved to Portugal, Spain etc., is quite vague and misleading. What am I not understanding is I really want to start the process once things calm down, so I can travel over there this year hopefully, scout it out then make plans; but it’s going to take much planning and wading thru bureaucracy red tape here and over there.

    • @ExpatsEverywhere

Currently, US citizens can't just up and move to Europe, no. But we did it during Covid with the travel restrictions because we got our D7 visa which allowed us to travel because by having that particular visa, we have a right to live in Europe. We have done a family vlog here on ExpatsEverywhere where we walk you through the process we took from start to finish getting our D7 visa to move to Portugal. ruclips.net/p/PL25TVkE0JZWllC7WG25lwqosk7NV2w-wy

Hi PG Tan, sorry for the confusion. We started the year off by telling our audience that we would get more personal with you all and explain why we moved to the different countries we moved to. This is our last video in that series. Our expat journey started in Spain, then South Korea, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, and finally Portugal. Singapore was the country we lived in the longest (4 years), we hope to go back at some point in our lives, and a place that we'll talk about more on the channel because we have a lot of friends/contacts there that we can interview and collaborate with. We moved to Porto, Portugal in October 2020, which is great! We love Singapore 🇸🇬 too though. - Josh & Kalie

We just didn’t want to create an hour long video to explain why we moved to each particular place. Why Portugal and not Italy?

    • @ExpatsEverywhere
      @ExpatsEverywhere  3 года назад +2

😊 Sorry we're not sure how to answer this one. First time being asked why Portugal and not Italy.
We've not had a strong desire to live in Italy albeit a fantastic place for a holiday. Rome is one of Kalie's top 3 favorite cities.
1 - Portugal has a lower cost of living
2 - Portugal's immigration process is easier/clearer for people like us
3 - We find the people in Portugal to overall be friendlier and more welcoming than Italians (but Italians don't put us off from moving there)
Ultimately, if someone had the desire to move to Italy, do it! Fantastic food, nice 4 season climate, phenomenal culture and history, and more. - Josh & Kalie

What is in the wind about vaccine passports because of Covid?
Is there talk of mandatory vaccines in Portugal for Covid?
We are still concerned about the latent affects of the experimental vaccines and don't want to get jabbed until a little more time has passed. That in itself might prevent us from qualifying for any type of vaccine passport. ...and prevent us from moving as we planned.

@@ExpatsEverywhere It has been almost a year (mid March) since our last trip to Portugal. We got caught up in the initial closures while there and the whole canceled flights and initial closings nightmare on our return to the USA (flew back through Newark). Like many, the forced "Covid life" kind of paralyzed our plans. We intended to sell our house and make the move this spring. Now, rather than rush to beat the clock, we are kind of in a wait and see mode. Unfortunately, rather than seeing restrictions on travel loosened, in many ways they are tightening.
So, our timeline will be for this year sometime depending on new mandates and restrictions.
