- "La Villa Strangiato" is the fourth and closing song from Rush's sixth studio album "Hemispheres". The album was recorded at Rockfield Studios in Monmouthshire (southeast Wales) and Trident Studios in London with longtime engineer and arranger, Terry Brown (Vocals were recorded at Advision (London) in June and July of 1978 and released on October 29, 1978. The album's two shorter tracks, "Circumstances" and "The Trees" were released as singles in 1978 and 1979, respectively. In 1993, the album was certified platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) for selling one million copies.
"La Villa Strangiato" is Rush's first solely instrumental track and is widely regarded as one of their most ambitious and impressive pieces. Running at just over 9 minutes & split into twelve parts, the piece was apparently inspired by vivid dreams (or nightmares) experienced by Lifeson. Geddy Lee was, on occasion, equally disturbed by these dreams: "Alex doesn't really call them nightmares. Their just strange dreams. He's plagued with them and he drives us crazy by calling us up all the time to tell us about them until we just say 'Stop, you're giving me a headache." Despite being an instrumental, the song tells a complete story, complete with plot and characters.
La Villa Strangiato is an apt title for this wildly shifting piece that encompasses hard rock, jazz, big band, and cartoon music. While numerous people have accused Rush of pretentiousness in this era, it is almost unbelievable that a band would create music like this in attempt to appeal to anything other than their own tastes; the piece is, after all, subtitled "An exercise in self-indulgence."
So ambitious was this piece that after countless attempts to record it in one take, the band finally relented and split the take into three (some interviews say four) and spliced the takes together. Lee has remarked that Rush spent more time recording "La Villa Strangiato" than they did recording the entire "Fly by Night" album.
The repeating jazzy pattern that is known as "Monsters" is a stylized approximation of another piece called "Powerhouse" by Raymond Scott. This piece was used in numerous Warner Brothers cartoons and is, to this day, a staple piece for the use of cartoon animators. Not only was "Powerhouse" used in the old "Merrie Melodies" and "Looney Tunes" cartoons, it has been sampled more recently by other bands such as Devo and They Might Be Giants; more recently cartoons including The Simpsons, Ren & Stimpy, Duckman, Batfink and Animaniacs, also the Cartoon Network's theme song. Rush did not initially credit Scott for the use of the piece and, years later, Scott's estate requested recompense from the band. By this time, however, the statute of limitations had expired and the band had no requirement to pay, but Rush's management, out of deference to Mr. and Mrs. Scott (Raymond was still alive at that point), and being the class act that they are, offered a one-time "penance" payment, feeling it was the ethical thing to do. All involved were happy with the resolution, and Rush has no further financial obligations. Under the settlement, they were not required to accord Raymond Scott partial songwriting credit on the piece.
"La Villa Strangiato" was a regular part of Rush set lists and was a piece that was regularly toyed with. It has on various separate occasions had added to it: nonsense lyrics, a stream of consciousness rant by Lifeson, and a polka styled introduction (which is used in this video's version of the song).
The song is divided into twelve sections:
I. "Buenos Nochas, Mein Froinds!"
II. "To Sleep, Perchance to Dream..."
III. "Strangiato Theme"
IV. "A Lerxst in Wonderland"
V. "Monsters!"
VI. "The Ghost of the Aragon"
VII. "Danforth and Pape"
VIII. "The Waltz of the Shreves"
IX. "Never Turn Your Back on a Monster!"
X. "Monsters! (Reprise)"
XI. "Strangiato Theme (Reprise)"
XII. "A Farewell to Things"
* "Buenos Nochas, Mein Froinds!" Translates to "Good night, my friends!"
* "Danforth and Pape" is an intersection in downtown Toronto. It is well known for being somewhat chaotic during "rush hour."
* Villa Strangiato is a real place in Italy. It was the home of the late Barone (Baron) Strangiato, an Italian nobleman, but it is not a major Italian landmark.
* “Lerxst” is one of Alex's knicknames, which came from a long-ago, exaggerated pronunciation of his name as “Alerxt.”
* The name "Shreves" comes from when one of the family worked as a person who held the office of sheriff. The founding heritage of the Shreves family is in the Anglo-Saxon culture that once dominated in Britain.
* La villa means "city" in Spanish, while Strangiato is made up, a fusion of Spanish and Italian to mean "strange." The images in the suite titles were inspired by dreams Alex was having.

The world is less of a place because this magic is gone.
You mean one-third is missing!!! We still have so much material left to us, plus more coming from our two favorite besties. ❤❤❤
The magic is always there.
7:40 that subtle look that Neil give Geddy says SO MUCH about their musical friendship.
Yeah it brings a tear to my eye that does cause Neil no longer with us 😢
Rush: One of the Few Bands , Where Every Instrument is a Lead Instrument.🤗🤗🤗😳😳😳
I'll tell you why they were so awesome and worthy of our highest esteem:
1) they were all basically good guys who got along with each other.
2) all super dedicated to their craft and consummate professionals
3) all super gifted in terms of talent and creativity.
4) All endowed with an awesome work ethic that any of us can admire and aspired to.
5) All still married to their high school sweethearts, devoid of all scandals! No rehab, no abuse allegations, no illegitimate children, no pregnant nannies, no oppressed stage hands, no drug busts. That in itself is amazing.
6) They encourage reading. Don't underestimate reading! The Professor never did.
7) they toured, and toured, and toured, because they knew that we wanted to see them and know that it was their job. They were hard working professionals.
8) they were Canadian! Who wouldn't want to be Canadian?
9) They practiced, in order to be ready to practice, in order to tour. They felt that WE deserved it, and they didn't want to let us down. Who else really was there for us every year, for 40 years? But beyond that, and more importantly, they did it because they felt they owed it too themselves to be the best they could be.
10) They never sold out. Never compromised.
11). Repeat #10
IF they were truly dedicated to their craft, they would have gone to music school
nailed it
You sound like Dave Grohl at the Hall of Fame Awards ceremony....and you're absolutely correct. N.East OHIO LOVES RUSH !!✌💖💖💖🙏
And was consistent with albums.
@@davidspurlock1111 they were the school. Pay attention.
This is otherworldly. As good as any rock band that has EVER played. How lucky we were to witness this band nonpareil.
Yes! and thank you, I learned a new word today
So true great band I saw in London many year’s ago
And thanks to RUclips, hopefully future generations can be reminded of this greatness
Very lucky. Never to happen again.
And witness that in the crowd in Cleveland. That's where I was. But I've seen them around 6 times.
How many Rush concerts have broken the Guinness world record for most air drumming? All of them! RIP Mr. Peart.
God, I miss these guys. There was nothing like a Rush concert. Nothing.
Over 40 years playing music and yet they act and smile like it is their first show
they are always doing I am better than you on stage
I never understood why Alex never get the love he deserves as one of the greatest rock guitarists of all time!?
I too wonder the same thing. I was looking at a top 100 rock guitarists list the other day and shocked to see Alex was 98th while Jimmy Page was top 3. Now Jimmy is great for sure but I will take Alex's amazy body of guitar work any day. Rush Rules!
Because most people get confused with 15-19 minutes songs😂
@@waldemarignatowicz9191and odd time signatures,
Its harder to stand out in a band with Geddy Lee and Neil Peart
Happy 70th to the greatest guitarist of my lifetime, an absolute legend
This song has the best guitar solo by Alex of all-time. It gives me goosebumps every time I've ever witnessed it. Rush rules forever. Miss you Neil beyond belief.
It's amazing that anyone could listen to this and NOT think that Alex Lifeson is one of the greatest guitar players in history. His crisp playing and the range of emotion in this song are simply incredible.
So underated
He's number 1 for me
Only underrated by the uninitiated. Nobody here watching this is NOT a Rush fan, and WE all know Lerxst is The Man.
One of the GOAT's for sure 👌
This has to be one of my favourite recordings of La Villa Strangiato...Happy Global Rush Day, y'all. 21/12/21.
HAPPY RUSH DAY
The best 3 man band ever.saw rush 3 times new orleans.
Yes,you are so right
@@michaelcallais8734 I lived there from February 83 till December 86 & I wish they had played there during that time. Been a long time fan since 2112 came out, but never saw them live. The Biggest regret of my life as far as Concerts. Should have gone to Greensboro NC for R40 but none of my "Rush Buddies" could go. Was hoping I'd get another chance but it was not to be.
Me too! I suggest also watching La Villa from the A Show of Hands tour. Alex adds a bunch of notes to the guitar solo in that one
I like how casually dressed they are. They just let the music speak for itself. The way it should be....
The world has been around for millions of years yet we are lucky enough to have been here to experience Rush.
The greatest trio of musicians to walk planet earth.
One of my great regrets in life is that I never saw RUSH live ... RIP Neil
I feel sorry for you. You really don't have any idea what you missed. I am a 25 show Rush fan..
I've seen RUSH over thirty times - & each version of this phenomenal instrumental has been exclusive to the audience on that particular night - this, ladies & gentlemen, is the true meaning of versatility & virtuosity....there can be no second best - no pretenders to their throne. Three sublime musicians - we shall never see their like again......
Your comment deserves 1 billion likes
Thanks, Jeremy ! There's nothing quite like the RUSH fanbase for their generosity of spirit - as you so readily embody.
Only regret never saw them live 🥹
2020 the world lost one of it‘s best rock drummers, keep rocking in heaven Neil 🥁
No matter what version I hear, I always say "Thank you very kindly, GOOD NIGHT!!" at the end.
A stage full of Love, talent, humor, and joy....a gift the 3 of them gave us for 40+ years!!
Imagine being this good, then imagine being this good for five decades. Amazing trio of collective genius
Alex looks like a guy who just finished mowing his grass and is having a cigar....reality, one of the greatest musicians ever!
It's amazing that we even have Geddy Lee, considering his parents were Jewish Holocaust survivors from Poland who had survived the ghetto in Starachowice (where they met), followed by their imprisonments at Auschwitz and later Dachau and Bergen-Belsen concentration camps during the Holocaust and World War II.
And if thats not enough? They were separated at some point, where his mother was transferred to Bergen-Belsen and his father to Dachau. After the camps were liberated, his father searched for his mother at the Bergen-Belsen displaced persons camp...... And FOUND HER!
Like I say. It's amazing we even have Geddy!
This proves that God is in control.
@@malhaven1 Yes. ......and no.
If God was TRULY in control, he wouldn't have allowed so many to be killed.
@@malhaven1 So God wanted those Jews who died in the camps to die?
Thanx for that man
I've never seen a tighter live band than Rush , and I've been very fortunate to have seen a ton of bands
3 of the best musicians to ever live...
There can only be one and only best band ever formed and i believe thay Rush is that band
You are correct
No way possible you can get any better than that.... The best musicians that God graced this unworthy Earth with.
These 3 guys....the miraculous wonder of my life. Thank you for keeping me sane for 50 years.
That's what we call a true RUSH affect!
I can’t express in words how thankful I am for Rush and their music. Boy, do I miss these guys!! Long live Neil - in our hearts and souls!! Thanks for posting this great show!
Man, Rush has been my favorite group for...about 40 years...whew!
@@kanenomoja I think Jay was just being silly, because Neil is gone. But Alex and Geddy have continually said that Rush would cease to exist if Neil wasn't involved. They said this even when Neil had simply retired.
Rush trivia: Alex recently sold that exact ES355 for $384,000. It's been with him since 1976, 2 years after Neil joined the group.
That guitar has been with him on every tour, and has been used to record something on every album since. The proceeds all went to charity.
That's "Whitey!"
Amazing. Shows the kind of guy he is
Best drummer & lyricist, best bass player and best guitarist ever....hands down BEST BAND IN THE WORLD ❤ Miss you Professor ❤️
Gifted doesn't even scratch the surface of the talent being radiated from this stage
The thing about RUSH is the depth of musicality possessed by 3 men. Incredible!
They smile on stage like they want to be there unlike many other bands, a family having fun while working their asses off.
I always liked how they took the stage dressed like rest of us, no pretense, just guys having fun! Like the rest of watching them...in awe of the dynamic of the the trio! God Bless them and may Neil rest. Our hearts will never be the same without them but the body of that they gave us will echo through time!✌❤🎸🍁
guess you never seen the cloaks...

Perhaps one of the greatest live versions of La Villa Strangiato ever recorded.
I've been a rush fan since the 70s, but one of the things I've always loved most about them is how much they seem to really enjoy being and playing together on stage. It's fun watching them have fun. Damn good stuff.
Probably the most down to earth, humble, human rock band of all time...well they're Canadian
A level of musicianship unmatched, untouchable, unfuckingbelievable.
I was gonna say,,,,, but you nailed it.
You can say that again! In fact i will for you.. Unmatched, untouchable, unfuckingbelievable!! 👍🇬🇧
The band was Canadian & for that fact alone, they weren't put higher on rock lists. How only 3 guys can make that kind of powerful guitar riffs, thundering drum fills & heart pounding bass/keyboards & vocals, still leaves me awestruck
Yet the the ovation they received at the RRHOF induction is to this day perhaps unmatched...gave me goose bumps...Canada goose bumps.
I miss Rush...but we still have these wonderful vid's
3 grownsed up men (grandparents) who are obviously having more fun still playing their music, than 3 teenage boys getting stoned outside their high school together back in the 1970s.... just like the 1st time I saw them back in 1976..... thanx 4 the memories and mental help along the way guys.....
My 1st show, March 19th, 1979. Civic Auditorium, in Jacksonville, FL. I was 15 years old. Tickets were $6.50! UFO opened for them. I had never heard of them before that night. Basically, a guy I barely knew from school guessed I would like them, so I went along, not knowing that they would change my perception of what a band was capable of!!!
I drank beer, smoked weed, took a quaalude, (yes, they were still around then) and I was FLOORED by the sound from those 3 EXTREMELY talented men! I swore there were 3, or 4 other players hiding in order to make it sound like that!!!
Been a solid fan ever since!
There will NEVER be a band as brilliant as those three guys from Canada!
Hey I just realized.... these guys are pretty good at playing their musical instruments
I just sucked in air. I can breathe
Lol!,.... almost like they could even give lessons or something 😜
Best 3 ring circus ever
Three incredible musicians that always treated each other and their fans with respect what a novel idea.
If there is one song that defines how great of a guitar player Alex Lifeson is it is this song! This is so complex and they are nailing this in concert! Awesome live set!
This is why Rush will never be re-created. It's just them!
Never gets old. They had to record the studio version in three sections, it was that hard, yet they pulled it off live without a hitch. Man, what a band!
I went to see Rush at the 02 24th May 2013 8months after loosing my wonderful son to cancer we had gone together on the 8thSept 2004 at Wembley Areana to see Rush it was very hard I still miss him so much
Three gods on one stage. I kneel before thee, unworthy of your gifts beyond price.
There will never be another band like RUSH.💖🧙♂️🧙♂️🧙♂️
Yes, there will be another band exactly like Rush...and another Bob Dylan and another Beatles.
An irreversible smile. And a tear in the eye. I'm so happy I got to see them live. The whole damn atmosphere. I miss them so much. Long live the professor.
smoked alotta weed seeing these guys over the years
@sbprime I have to admit. When I saw them live it was on the snakes and arrows tour. I was really nervous because somehow my ticket was in a completely different part of the front of stage from where my uncles were. They had been to over 20 rush concerts each. They said don't worry. And it was like a brotherhood. Everyone air drumming and air bass playing. A bunch of the dudes next to me found out it was my first rush show and literally said "welcome!" An experience I hold near and dear to my heart.
Rest in peace Neil you absolute
legend 🤘
Still the best guitar solo in their catalog. I spent 30 years trying to replicate Alex's tone.....failed. What a god.
Without a doubt the tightest 3 member band in rock history.
THE GREATEST ROCK BAND EVER. RIP NEIL
Every aspect of RUSH ,ALL THAT MASTERY OF INSTRUMENTS TOGETHER , MIND BLOWING!
These guys are the best… I stopped listening to anything else and you still hear something new each listen.
Im the biggest Power Windows fan on earth and the rest of the 80s ‘fusion’ years - absolutely brilliant!
Miss them like hell but their music will live on for eternity!!!
I never tire of hearing that song. After 40 years, I STILL never tire of hearing that song.
3 men who are equally talented. No one is more talented than the other. Wish I could have seen them in concert. Rest in peace Neil.
Rest in peace Professor.
We miss you.
I miss them so very much. All of my hero’s are slowly passing, and it breaks my heart ❤
Probably the greatest three man band there will ever be. Three awesomely talented musicians!!
Best la villa i've heard hands down. These guys had it clickin that night. Seeing the professor smile is priceless.
No doubt, this was an incredible performance! Glad you enjoyed it Kevin!
It was good but Rush in Rio version is by far the best
3 of the best musicians to ever walk this Earth.
Three of the finest musicians ever and human beings
Alex is the greatest underrated guitarist ever. 😎🔥
is he?
I'm firmly convinced that if he had chosen to work with a lesser rhythm section, the whole world would recognize him as one of the greatest guitarists of all time. Neil and Geddy get plenty of recognition, and rightly so, but Alex flies under almost everyone's radar.
@@DinsdalePiranha67 and IF you won the lottery a few years ago you would likely not be on this platform. @Jay - Good one...I was formulating a ripping riposte to the eternally stupid statement "...underrated guitarist..." (which actually means "I have no idea who this guy is" and is also said about guitar players such as Terry Kath) but you covered it perfectly....
A 3 man band that sounds like 5 or 6 on stage playing. Wow
I saw them 10 times and their music is simply a part of my life and soul.
Been to over 31 rock concerts in my life. The best in the business and RUSH is the best live concert I've ever seen.
2.8M views should be 2.8M likes. Might be the best musical version ever
I seen this video 10 times, could only hit like on it once. Sorry
Three absolute masters in each own of their instruments... Rock N roll gods!
You're dearly missed Neil, the professor
WATCH AT 3:05 and watch how quickly Neil shifts the grip position in his left hand as the time signature/tempo changes!
So awesome to get the chance to see a detail like that after all these years of listening to the song!!!!
I can really see how hard it must have been for even the Professor Himself to play at the same level as the 29 year old Neil Peart.
Actually, I heard that even Alex was ready to stop, as he told Neil that he felt he had just one tour left in him, as his hands were starting to go, as the arthritis creeped in. Neil was not happy, but he gave in the next day and the decided to do one last tour.
"The Drummer looks so serious"
Alex: ALL THE SILLINESS!
Numerous comment on the guitar playing, but the bass playing of GL is outrageous and wild. All 3 are fantastic musicians.
Yes, Geddy Lee is an absolute beast here. But all three are kicking the bloody hell out of it.
One of the best band that all times
Incredible musicianship. I've tried to think of other bands live performances that come anywhere close to this and I can't. Rush had no equal, they were so far ahead of the rest.
The Polka intro, LOL! These guys have a wicked sense of humor, love it!
Only Neil Peart could have tens of thousands of people air drumming like that together
And perhaps Phil Collins for like 5 seconds
Thank-You, it means alot.
It's true.
Three of Canada's greatest musicians brought together by a wonderful love of music evolution. Fantastic.
I lived in the time of RUSH!
🕯️
Amen to that! 🫶
Will we ever see unfettered joy like this on stage, accompanied by limitless musical virtuosity, again? Thankfully we've been left a rich legacy of video concert footage of the boys in action to sustain our need. Thank goodness.
One of my favourite bands of all times ! RIP dear Neil ... the Professor !
I will forever miss Neil Peart. I've seen Rush four times and he just blew my mind. Neil just pounded his ass off. I've never seen anybody better. So grateful I'm a good photographer and I got great photos, when were Neil was looking at me smiling.
I love how much LOVE these guys had playing together, and knowing how exceptionally Tight their playing together IS.
Take a look at some real artistry here folks.
Be wowed.
Always AMAZED how much POWER these three guys pumped out!
Will truly be missed!😪
Unequivocally the greatest rock trio in history.
They sound like a 6-member band
The look of Alex and Geddy laughing with Neil in the background at 1:42 made me tear up. 3 insanely underrated musicians that look to be having just as much fun then as they did when they first started out. Thanks for the memories and music gentleman. Rest in Peace Neil 🕊️
I wouldn't call a band that sold 100 million albums "underrated"
"Underrated" ? Lol
RIP Neil. Just dropping by to say it.. simply can't be said enough
Masterpiece. La Villa Strangiato is perhaps the culmination of the chemistry between these three fantastic musicians.
Rush sao os maiores! Sem duvida meu amigo.
Best thing to come out of Canada since maple syrup.
Nope..they're better than Maple Syrup!
i emigrated to Canada in 1972. Lived and worked in Toronto for a few years, just to say it was such a unforgettable time in my life, seen some great bands there what memories.
The guitar play is astro. Simply wonderful. God I was privileged to hear such magnificence.
I've said it before and I'll say it again; I'm convinced these 3 geniuses are from another planet.
Waaayy ahead of their time and the fact that they never left each other's side for almost 50 years.
Name another band that has accomplished this......
The Rolling Stones.
NONE !!!!
Not another planet, just Toronto. The same neighbourhood of Willowdale that brought us Rick Moranis and Steve Shutt (Ged and Al went to school with them)
The look Neil gives to Geddy at 7:41 brings me such joy. Rush eternal.
I had the great blessing of seeing them on this tour. Will never be forgotten and will never see their like again.
Saw them on clockwork angels in Birmingham UK with my eldest girl....first ever live gig for her ... Devotees for life hahaha 👍🤣👍
THE GREATEST ROCK BAND. THAT EVER CAME OUT OF ROCK AND ROLL. THE BAND "RUSH".
