I LOVE Nels Cline and his contribution to the band...but as amazing as they are currently, Wilco never rocked the way they did with this lineup. R.I.P. Jay Bennett.
RIP Jay Bennett. Saw them first right after Summerteeth came out...and Jay Bennett's guitar riffs stole the show. I honestly watched him play most of the show. He was so incredibly talented. Although they always come out with unbelievable material, I haven't liked any of their subsequent albums as much as I did Summerteeth.
One of my favourite Wilco songs - the album version is slightly different but just as good. I love it on the DVD commentary when they are making fun of Jeff's "mental hospital" outfit in this clip! And Glenn's "enthusiastic" facial expressions LOL I hope Jay is resting in peace; he left a wonderful legacy :)
The great thing is, we're what 5-6 years on from this recording? And he still plays with the same intensity and sheer exuberance that he did in this video. They're the best live band in the world right now, no doubt.
Indeed. In a Future Age, Shot in the Arm, How to Fight Loneliness. Being There, which is the first record Jay Bennett had sonic influence on, changed the band. Absolutely changed the band. And his heavy influence on YHF (I saw Wilco about 5 or 6 times just in that in-between period while YHF was going through the label drama, and Jay was so key, smoking his cigarette at the Fillmore in SF. A singular creative mind.
Love being thee and a.m but you hae to understand their music matured with them, and obviously evolved with the introduction of new members. the first wilco song i heard was shot in the arm and fell in love with them straight away. the dvd this is from is fucking cool !
I think all Wilco's good really, I own every album, and I don't see why people are giving Sky Blue Sky so much lip, I think it's a great album, but Summerteeth will always be my favorite :)
Honestly I like this more than the album version lot more emotion and soul but then again thats the thing about Wilco their one of the few bands that's better live than in the studio
Wilco doc (one of the best rock doc's about a band EVER) listen to Wilco's I'm always in love studio version on summer teeth before judging...or don't! since you like that evo version muhaha. Kids this is what we call a band, real people with real instruments. Good day.
@worrywart425 I think it was their loft/makeshift recording studio, where Yankee Hotel Foxtrot was created. This clip is taken from the documentary I Am Trying To Break Your Heart.
This was when they were working on Yankee Hotel Foxtrot and had to do some shows to raise money. They had to go back and pick up their older songs they hadn't played in a while, and this was an early rehearsal trying to get it worked out, so it makes sense that it's a little rough. I've seen them live, though, and they are amazing. Not that I think this is particularly bad either.
@jifigz Better than Sky Blue Sky? Wilco (The Album) was a hell of a disappointment, but how can you not be blown away by Sky Blue Sky? It's the perfect culmination of all their previous efforts wrapped up into one mindblowing escapade of soundscapes that I've never heard anywhere else. Bennett served his purpose, but you could see in the IATTBYH documentary that he was starting to hold them back. The YHF demos were good, but the album with O'Rourke/Kotche's input was absolutely stellar.
YHF is my fav, but about Sky Blue Sky...they are getting back to their country roots and for some people, like myself, it just sounds way too "polished"...to "clean" if you know what I mean, doesn't mean it isn't good good, i like it.
I have many Wilco albums. I do not like to steal others thoughts or opinions but i cannot help but agree with one comment I read. Wilco was best with Jay Bennett in the band. I do not own the newest Wilco album, but Summerteeth, YHF, and Being there are all much better than the most recent music.
Why can't Wilco make more songs like this? It is my favorite song by them. It seems Jeff is more into making slow songs now, judging from Sky Blue Sky and Ghost,,
@bradleysparker You sir a very correct. Sky Blue Sky is an amzingly fantastic album. Side with the Seeds is totally a badass song and Nels' prescence is clearly noticeable there. AWESOME! I do think the entire album is a great listen. And I agree, Wilco (the album) was disappointing, but its growing on me. I still hail summerteeth as my favorite though, but, hell, who gives a shit. WILCO IS A GREAT BAND and we are blessed they havent been static and always evolving.
Pavement and Wilco are two of my favorite bands. Comparing the two and trying to decide who is better would make my head explode. My head just exploded. Pavement is better. But Wilco is still amazing.
I was informed that they are doing 5 nights in chicago and playing their whole back catalogue. i live in ireland. how much does the devil pay for a soul ?
“Where are you, Jay Bennet?”A must watch the documentary. Without him Wilco would have been just an alt country band. Thank you Jay! RIP
First heard this song on a phone commercial back when I was a teen been listening ever since till this day love this song
I LOVE Nels Cline and his contribution to the band...but as amazing as they are currently, Wilco never rocked the way they did with this lineup. R.I.P. Jay Bennett.

Yes. He wasn’t only a killer guitarist, producer, engineer, multi instrumentalist but visionary. Irreplaceable.
this is my favorite wilco line up. jay was very much underrated. the songs just don't have the same power and weight to them anymore.
one of the best tunes from the best American band still working. No shit.
0:39 You can tell just how excited Glenn is to be in this band doing what he’s doing
Oh yes he always seems so enthusiastic!
He’s so excited!
one of my favorite songs ever
This is such good, raw live energy right here. Mr. Jay Bennett ladies and gentlemen!!!
I wouldn’t be the musical freak I am if it wasn’t for seeing these guys rock my face off at 15.
I’m so happy to hear this!
wilco is the best american band since pavement
The great thing is, we're what 5-6 years on from this recording? And he still plays with the same intensity and sheer exuberance that he did in this video. They're the best live band in the world right now, no doubt.
I know how fantastic YHT was, but God help me, I'm a Summerteeth man. An absolutely perfect record!
Summerteeth is their masterpiece
Don’t forget-Jay had a huge influence on Yankee Hotel Foxtrot, too.
I heard this song earlier today on XM and can't get it out of my head. What a brilliant, kick ass song by these guys, I love it!
This is when the band was at its peak. I'm so glad there was a movie to capture it.
Love being thee and a.m but you hae to understand their music matured with them, and obviously evolved with the introduction of new members. the first wilco song i heard was shot in the arm and fell in love with them straight away. the dvd this is from is fucking cool !
Look like they're having fun!!
I think all Wilco's good really, I own every album, and I don't see why people are giving Sky Blue Sky so much lip, I think it's a great album, but Summerteeth will always be my favorite :)
The best 3:34 of Wilco? I don’t mean to belittle anything they’ve done…but this is best I’ve ever seen them. Long live Jay Bennett
this was the highest level of Wilco, ever
prove me wrong!
Sky Blue Sky is a great mix of old and new. Shake it off is so original. Sky Blue Sky is necessary to listen to. Its awesome.
It nearly breaks my heart to see Jay Bennett in this video! R.I.P. Jay Bennett!
this one always reminded me of Guided By Voices
So good....wow. Timeless rock.
I agree with you...he really does.
lol i've loved wilco for a while and never noticed that before!
hahahaha "smoke pot, smoke pot, smoke pot" I never realized that
I love the Love Vigilantes reference at the end of this tune.
Such an eargasm :D
yes. yes they are.
Very true. I wish I could see them live.
Man! Charlie Sheen on the drums!!, once seriously, great band, great tune.
i can`t hear those fuzzing & electronical stuff- i love tweedy`s twanging`guitar, great voice & excellent songwriting & i truly miss jay bennett!!
I like this and I'm an old guy
Honestly I like this more than the album version lot more emotion and soul but then again thats the thing about Wilco their one of the few bands that's better live than in the studio
My theme tune....love love love this band xxx
seconded unnecessarily
Wilco rock on !
Right after Jesus Etc., this is my favorite Wilco song.
I feel like if these guys were around in the 60's they would have been the american beatles. So great in every way!
I think I like this version the most. Rehearsing for a tour, circa, what, 2000-01 or so? anyway, excellent stuff, as is usually the case
RIP Jay Bennett
It's from "I Am Trying to Break Your Heart - A Film About Wilco (2002)" which you can get on 1 disc or 2 disc DVD and is a masterpiece!!!
I'm dying to see that.
@@clintwilson6380 it's a brilliant film. You will love it.
I'm always in love...with this song
déjà-vu... excellent...
Good ole midwest boys. Always solid.
This is from the sadly underrated Summerteeth album, and I think it's their best album of all,
This was right after "the end of the days of two guitars".
Wilco doc (one of the best rock doc's about a band EVER) listen to Wilco's I'm always in love studio version on summer teeth before judging...or don't! since you like that evo version muhaha. Kids this is what we call a band, real people with real instruments. Good day.
damn straight
best version.
I completely agree with you!!!
Its OWEN WILSON on the bass singing " smoke pot, smoke pot, smoke pot, smoke pot, smoke pot, smoke pot" !!
You're not the only one -- I like the original as well!!!
@frankc32 I think he's referring to the backing vocals that start around 1:20.
You are not alone.
Yeah, I'm wondering where I can find the EVO's remix of this song. Was digging the electronic vibe of it.
Shame they never made a full version honestly. It was a nice update/tribute
Right on!
I'm a ginormouse weezer fan and i know summerteeth cuz i'm a huge wilco fan too.
@worrywart425 I think it was their loft/makeshift recording studio, where Yankee Hotel Foxtrot was created. This clip is taken from the documentary I Am Trying To Break Your Heart.
smoke pot smoke pot! yay for underlying messages :)
This was when they were working on Yankee Hotel Foxtrot and had to do some shows to raise money. yeah, some very very good songs on them.
@jifigz Better than Sky Blue Sky? Wilco (The Album) was a hell of a disappointment, but how can you not be blown away by Sky Blue Sky? It's the perfect culmination of all their previous efforts wrapped up into one mindblowing escapade of soundscapes that I've never heard anywhere else.

yes sir!
Has anyone else ever noticed Jeff picks up an acoustic guitar when he walks in, but when they cut back to him he's playing an electric?
YHF is my fav, but about Sky Blue Sky...they are getting back to their country roots and for some people, like myself, it just sounds way too "polished"...to "clean" if you know what I mean, doesn't mean it isn't good good, i like it.
@busenlilly1 you are NUTS YHF is a fuking MASTERPIECE !!!
when i soak so long i forget my mother
Jeeze...Glenn looks like a little boy. Soo young!
gotta love charlie sheen on the drums
😂
And Owen Wilson on bass.
The fact that people are talking about the Evo commercial pisses me off. Wilco for life.
@Wilco362 It's my all-time fave too!
I just blew my brains out. Hope you're happy guys.
wow! fucking awesome song!!! love the chorus 'smoke pot' even though that is not their thing.
How do I give this ten stars?
Is he saying "smoke POT"?! haha fucking hiLarious subliminal message in the song.
Me too. :/
Your right he does look like Charlie Sheen and the lead singer looks like Jeremy Renner the guy who played Hawkeye in the Avengers
Why can't Wilco make more songs like this? It is my favorite song by them. It seems Jeff is more into making slow songs now, judging from Sky Blue Sky and Ghost,,
LOL!!!!!!!!!!
Great song...10:15
@frankc32 He goes to my school. Same History class. Nice guy.
I've never looked up the lyrics and I pick up on almost everything he says...
And this is crazy...
they need to make a longer evo remix
is this the one from the htc commercial? Thats the one I was looking for :)
The Evo remix SUX!!!!
It was weird to see Weezer mentioned on the comments cause they're my favorite band tied with Wilco.
@kangaroovision it jim carey. however that is sheen's hair.
you guys, glenn is WAY better that anybody!
thanks brotha!
I am looking for the evo remix too
@rizzlefizzle604 hahaha, same here
I was informed that they are doing 5 nights in chicago and playing their whole back catalogue. i live in ireland. how much does the devil pay for a soul ?
Hahahahaha!
