Tweedy: NPR Music Tiny Desk Concert

- There's something heartwarming about a family making music together. I'm especially sentimental when I see a father with a son, because my son and I made music in contra dance bands and Irish sessions as he grew up.
Years ago, while interviewing Jeff Tweedy before a Wilco concert, I asked him if he'd made music with his kids. He told me about going to his son Spencer's preschool class and writing a tune with all the kids; "Monkey Mess" was their final creation.
Now, all these years later, he and Spencer have put together 20 songs as Tweedy for a new record called Sukierae; the material is strong, personal and bare. Spencer is a great drummer who grew up playing in the basement of a Chicago bar called Lounge Ax (which his mom, Susie Miller, co-owned), and he's got a group of his own called The Blisters.
The father and son usually perform together with a full-band lineup. But here at the Tiny Desk, we've stripped it down to just the men who bear the Tweedy name - and share the family bond that helps make their music together beautiful.--BOB BOILEN
Set list:
"Wait For Love"
"New Moon"
"Low Key"
"You Are Not Alone"

It's good to see parents putting their kids to work.
Lol
I think it’s the other way around.
I have been blessed to have been playing music with my dad since I was a teenager. Eventually my younger brother joined us, and we recorded some songs. It's pretty special to have had that experience. Now I'm pushing 40, and we still love sitting down with some guitars whenever we're all in the same room (which isn't that often anymore). And now my own teenage son and daughter are musicians, and sometimes we'll jam together. It's a treat every time. There's much joy to be shared in playing music together.
Songwriter for the biggest band in the world starts a band with his son? This is beautiful. Also, this is a fucking tasteful drummer. Damn! Wonderfully discerning and idiosyncratic. Fantastico.
i sure like wilco a whole lot. but, they are not the biggest band inthe world. try tellin them that.
jimmy smith there's some truth in that, but they have unique fans, and the best kind of fans so i totally am onboard with them thinking like that. They've got a dedicated following that could isn't as big as phish's but is the same type
Growing up watching Glenn Kotche playing with his dad probably helps ;)
Wilco are nowhere NEAR the biggest band in the world, as in they're light years away from being that
Listen to Spencers "Geezer Love" album. What a gem that is.
I'm a latecomer to Mr. Tweedy's music (both solo and with Wilco) and I have become one of his most ardent fans in the past year. *sigh*
Jeff Tweedy is the greatest artist of our time. He doesn't just do rock or alternative or whatever. It everything. He dabbles in all genres just a little. Alt rock, krautrock, alt country, soul style rock, folk rock, Americana, Americana rock, and others. This man blows my mind away.
so rock, rock, rock, rock, rock, rock, rock, rock and rock
@@RazorLeif I really love Wilco and whatnot but they don’t nearly dabble in every genre
What a great father/son relationship they have!
This is fantastic--father and son, guitar and drums. Simple, bare-bones and so much fun to listen to. Awesome video!
WGBH Music wilco
Hats off to Spencer. So musical
My Wife died suddenly and I’m trying to figure it out. I nearly resuscitated her but she didn’t make it. Your music brings me comfort.
Hope you're doin' okay
Condolences. Music helps heal the soul.
Brock, I’m watching this for the first time and came across your comment. How did everything g turn out for you?
@@tedmarley2285 thank you for asking; I’m doing well and getting back to work as a speech and language pathologist
I’m so sorry Brock. I’m also coming across this video for the first time and randomly saw your comment. I hope you are finding comfort and peace in many things. This music connects us. Take care.
Just caught myself singing the missing vocals during the chorus of "Low key", haha.
Gotta love the Tweedys ! :)
Tweedy rocks! Always love Jeff's voice...lovely drumming Spencer
Just beautiful. Thanks!
Man, I really wish they would do another album together. So good.
Love the set......Spencer can really play....what a joy to play with your dad
Oh man. Just too awesome. I am up to five Jeff Tweedy concerts that I can't stop playing.
I absolutely love this. What a wonderful way to wake up!!
🤘🤘 🎸 🎸
Sukierae is one of my favorite albums ever. The vinyl pressing of this is just superb. It’s like a lost Wilco album. In some ways better than some of their recent albums.
Tasteful and beautiful music that is both simple and easy to listen to? This is rare.
Really nice, guys. I envy the idea of a father and son performing together. Way to go.
Hey Michael! We think you'll enjoy our never before seen interview with Jeff Tweedy & John Stirratt of Wilco from the early 2000s! Check it out here: ruclips.net/video/fmnIOt5PmZI/видео.html
This is so great, you know he's having the time of his life playing with his son.
No matter your opinion of the man, musically he is an amazing mix of Lennon/McCartney- in the best sense of it, his songs keep reminding me of the same feeling I got listening to the Beatles when they were at their best. A lot harder to do than he makes it look. He is one talented musician. Compelling music.
Great songs and performance by Tweedy.
The kid sounds great!! Sweet sweet session! thanks.
What is it about Tweedy that makes me love him so much? This stuff is great.
Jake Tolbert Ah, cool! -I wasn't familiar with him- holy hell, Wilco and Uncle Tupelo guy. Damn, I'm tired! I think -he'd be- this work would be good for FRIDAY NIGHT SESSIONS on one of my shows. Thanks for catching my eye with this. I always like these Tiny Desk concerts at NPR.
The more I listen, I could see this working for *****, him and a drummer. This works for me. Sparse, and very poignant.
haha. Sean Cowen, when I first saw your comment, I thought, "I'll bet he has and just doens't know it :)"
Maybe because obviously he's taught his son to be an artist, free thinker and to express his individuality :) Father of the decade goes to...
Couldn't agree more, dude. Something about Jeff's personality made me a life-long fan at a very young age. So cool to see the these two play live together.
It's his big heart, his soulfulness and authenticity. It shines through his music...
Great stuff, loved everything about it.
Jeff Tweedy will forever be god.
Jeff sos increible. Amo toda la música que haces.
Moments that never come back exept through dreams and memories. Very loverly
The second song is everything I've hoped for and expected from Tweedy, myself having been out of time lately to explore his works. I'm not even done listening to this set yet. I always enjoy hearing him on MPR(Minnesota Public Radio), having been a fan his work since 2001.
Thank you for sharing this : )
holy shit ! with that talent and handsomeness, Spencer will be breaking hearts left and right
Beautiful.
Something so rooted about a basic, beautiful waltz.
🤘🤘 🎸 🎸
7:15 - More dads and teenage sons should rock out together, that sounds like it'd be a good strategy...
Seeing Tweedy & Wilco on October 1. Cannot fucking WAIT.
🤘🤘 🎸 🎸
Very nice songs and interpretation ! I like to keep things simple while playing music and that is excatly what they are doing.
such a minimal kit and yet spencer got so many nice sounds from it!
Let's face it the guy is really good. He is just cool.
7:40 Low Key. Great song. Great playing.
I love this!💙😊💙
That first tune is just beautiful.....
No surprise that the most tasteful songwriter of our time has a son who is the most tasteful drummer.
Love this! Can't wait to do the same with my boys.
Beautiful
Spencer is freakin' great. So tasteful, and so responsive. I am jealous - I want him to be in MY band!!
Spencer was also trained one on one by Glenn Kotche himself. The stick technique is on purpose, I'd put money on it.
What a gift for Spencer and Jeff. You can just tell how pleased Jeff is to play with his son. I still regret not learning guitar young enough to be able to play with my dad. He's gone from this earth, but every time I pick up his D'Angelico, I try and channel his spirit. Nit pickers be damned, music between a father and son is great music.

Music is for listening and to fly!
So FREAKING AWESOME--!!!
Could not agree more... Love the Tweedys
Can't wait to see J.T + Son down here in NewZealand soon
This is so, so true.
Oh Tweedy I love you so
LOVE!
LOVE this man!

I had the great pleasure of seeing Wilco at Keyspan(MCU) Park in Brooklyn. That was an amazing show! Love Tweedy and that Jeff is working with his son. I also love the George Harrison influence on Wilco's You Never Know. I'm sure if George was alive he'd be working with Dhani. He started to on the album Brainwashed.

Loving this! Just discovered this amazing artist and Wilco. Should have known they would be great being friends with the Jayhawks and all. I have to chuckle with this.....I wonder if Jeff Tweedy is trying to compete with Chris Thile for being on Tiny Desk the most! :)
brilliant work mr tweedy wilco

Second song is a friggin gem.
Brilliant stuff from Jeff and Spencer
Great concerts these and Tweedy knock it out of the park
Excellent album too - check the 'Low Key' video for more Father/Son stuff
Guitar drums work perfectly here
i think it sounds great
Fuck, this makes me want to create music in a two piece ensemble. A simple and minimal expression of music.
Dude can whistle
nice, guyz
Proud Papa :)
That guitar is amazing!
Thought so too
Low key ❤❤❤
나..이노래너무좋아...제프트위디...너무 좋아.
Loving those CC drums though
he really is genius!

You can get some really nice sounds from just drums and an acoustic guitar and voice. Sounds nice! (Would have used a larger guitar myself, not that you need to, but the man does own several nice dreadnoughts and super jumbos.)
Jesse Watson I agree...
“The blame goes not to our stars keepers but to the fact that they are there for the Gods to read by not for us to confuse with discourse.” ,dan’
"You Are Not Alone" could be a John Lennon song for sure.
🤘🤘 🎸 🎸
My favourite song is the last one that they play but i can't find it on the album. Has anybody been able to find it off of RUclips??
tweedy is like mixture of dr john, jerry garcia, and doug benson haha im going to bed.
I like Tweedy's guitar.
Apparently it’s from the 30’s or something... very fragile and I think that’s why he has switched over to playing Waterloo acoustics. Similar in build and sound.
2:37 when he smiles at Spencer :)
I thought the exact same thing. Beautiful.
“Tomorrow needs worked on. I’ll throw you a tool from here. Catch. Catches it. Good catch.” ,dan’
I want to be 32 again and listening for first time
check out the album. it's great,
🤘🤘 🎸 🎸
They should bring it Charleston. My step mom saw Wilco at the beachcomber(surf bar) and said they were awesome. Would by tickets/10

You rarely see him play his signature Martin....
He's playing his 1930s Kel Kroydon KK-1 L00 “Birds” acoustic here (since sold for $10,000).
His music is what birthed Wes Anderson.
wait didnt i see this guy on parks and rec
Hahahaha when I saw that episode I was like "That's Jeff Tweedy!!"
What do you think of season 7 so far? It's so bittersweet :/
We love parks and rec! So awesome that you recognized Tweedy on the show. We think you'll enjoy our never before seen interview with Jeff Tweedy & John Stirratt of Wilco from the early 2000s! Check it out here: ruclips.net/video/fmnIOt5PmZI/видео.html
I wish jeff was my dad..
reminds me of Pedro The Lion
Even Tweedy's kid has the "so lame to play in my dads band" look on his face. Love it, it's a universal truth. Great set regardless.
“This is true and the answer is “No”.”
,dan’
Enjoying this 16:20 minute long video at 16:20...
3 & 4 in a show where there's only one person in the audience.
Huh, Jeff Tweedy's son is Spiderman.
Is he using a pick or his fingers?
reminds me of rodriguez.
🤘🤘 🎸 🎸
:D
give a kid a chance
la traduction en français serai cool svp
What's Tweedy's guitar?
Anthony Marris A 1930′s Gibson Kel Kroydon.
+Jesse P. Pollack Thanks, i was thinking of asking the same thing.
