My dear husband, Eric passed away on March 15, 2024. He was an extremely talented Jazz drummer and trumpeter from NYC. I remember he was playing this song on the stage like yesterday. Making me cry. I met him in Osaka Japan 1990. Listening to Jazz just brings back all the memories. I wish he could be here. It told me that he met Wood Shaw a few times. He knew many Jazz musicians and some giants. I used to enjoy hearing the stories. I miss you, Eric. Rest in heaven. This song is for you. I ❤ you forever. Akiko
There will never be another Woody Shaw thats for sure .Love you miss you Ill be looking for you on the other side ! My greatest inspiration in this world and just a super caring loving person .Someday people will trully know how much you mean to me .May god bless all that pass this way .
Ever time I transcribe the masters I feel like I get to pick up on a little of their thoughts and soul, and it's so inspiring to be able to really pick up on the nuances of their playing, untill I realize how far away I am from their mastery lol.
@@joeknipes9567finish Kenny’s solo and currently working on Woody’s. I don’t know why but the time of the beginning of the solo sounds a bit strange to me
My gosh, Woody’s solo is so goated. Maybe it’s because I’m a trumpet player, or because I play part of his solo for my region and state audition, but hooooolllly
Don’t sweat it. You’ve got to be able to play far INSIDE the changes to be able to speak coherently OUTSIDE of them. And when you’re ready to step outside, pentatonics will be there to guide you 😉
The undisputed King of modern jazz trumpeters and my friend .The last note is the best note theres no resolution ,it defies human anticipation of resolving to the tonic ! Instead he ends on a fourth above the tonic . Woody loved him some 4th 's .He was definately a very intervalic player . Most trumpet players play very linear . Woody was an inovator and played with such fire and verocity that unless you witnessed him play live you'll never really know.
Excellent points you make Darrol. Intervalic playing. Loves his fourths. Non-linear. I add: his aggressive attacks and sheer energy. You don't hear many players play with such energy and excitement. That's what made Woody a trumpet artist apart from any other.
Solid is an album led by trumpeter Woody Shaw which was recorded in 1986 and released on the Muse label.[1][2] Solid was reissued by Mosaic Records as part of Woody Shaw: The Complete Muse Sessions in 2013. Wikipedia
Casey Shaw a great music teacher once told me that horn players can get away with murder and it's true man they can get away with so much stuff as long as they're confident with what they're doing
Skillful application of pentatonic scales will get you to these sounds. There's a world of unexpected possibilities in pentatonics, where you get stuff like major 7ths sounding good over dominant chords.
Transcribing is documentation and African Americans Classical music is written in the air So says all the greats.Ttane Bird Gotdo Brown Dizzy and thousands more. Its a voice that cannot be reduced to writing
Who the hell are you to even make a comment concerning this great trumpet genius. What music have you ever composed or can you even play an instrument let alone trumpet. Yeah crickets!
I have a transcription of Woody Shaw's solo on this recording posted on my site, if anyone is interested. robertbeasleymusic.com/downloads/there-will-never-be-another-you/

He has some great posture going on in this pic
Kai Man I love this album! I think his posture transmits presence, the same presence he has musically
After training boxing for years and being the former champion, he must.

My favorite Kenny Garrett solo ever !!
1:48 to 1:53 may still be the baddest four bars in the history of jazz. he was such a genius

Nah, I'm a saxophone player and I agree
I’m a sax player transcribing it rn it’s goated
One of my favorite standards, masterfully played
I wish I could play outside the changes half as well as these guys.
You can if you just work at it
Agreed if you practice enough you can be great

L'assolo di Kenny Garrett è geniale
This is such a sweet line up
Really puts you in the mood to stop by a nightclub, have a nice dinner with a fine lady and nice wine and relax the evening away. Fabulous post.

Casey Shaw a great music teacher once told me that horn players can get away with murder and it's true man they can get away with so much stuff as long as they're confident with what they're doing

no way that's pure sin... Please say he omitted the C#, ohh my lanta lol

Um Trompetista que ampliou os limites do Jazz moderno com muita beleza e suavidade em uma carreira curta, assim como Clifford Brown.

What Trumpet?

I'd love putting a matrix-wire inside my head to be able to play out like Woody S.
Poincare... that's good :)
This has a little swirl, a little my-hands-are-in-pockets, a little birds in the piazza
Thanks for the post!
Look up the recording "Woody's You For Two" by the US Navy Commodores for a great arrangement based off of Woody's solo.

My favorite Woody Shaw is his work is on the Larry Young Unity recording. This Shaw doesn't have the same intensity and clarity of sound to me.
He had gotten old before his time.

Me too. That album with Larry Young is one of my most favorite albums.
