  • For over 10 years the original ‪@strymon‬ BigSky has reigned supreme in the world of big big stereo reverbs. For its hallowed Cloud setting and warm Strymon sound, it has been seen on the pedalboards of some of the greatest guitarists in the world, not to mention what seems to be a prerequisite in praise & worship music.
    It was only a matter of time before a successor would be named, and with little warning the BigSkyMX (BSMX) was launched into the world for us all to drool over and reignite our GAS (Gear Acquisition Syndrome!)
    With updated hardware, a new layout, and brand new reverb algorithms (as well as updating the classics,) the BSMX is a reverb enough to keep Strymon on top for another 10 years!
    Check out all the presets that come from the factory and hear some glorious sounds swimming in reverberation!

    I knew you'd have a demo out soon! Good stuff. I have a NightSky, but am now thinking of grabbing one of the used Big Sky units for cheap since the new one came out. Man this thing just sounds fabulous!

      Nice thing about a new version is the old version costs less now!

    Nice! So the question for me now is which one should I get? Mercury x or Big sky MX?

    • @thepedalcollaborative
      @thepedalcollaborative  2 месяца назад +2

      Tough question! Tell me what are you looking for. Some things to consider:
      - Single or Dual Reverbs at the same time?
      - Ability to load custom IRs?
      - More algorithms with less parameters to tweak? Or less algorithms but with lots of parameters to adjust?

      @@thepedalcollaborative What is the chance Meris updates their Mercury X to compete more closely with the Big sky MX? e.g. custom IR, dual reverbs or another algorithm (I'd say dual reverb has the highest chance)

    • @Antoniooomusic
      @Antoniooomusic 2 месяца назад +1

      Not sure that’s the problem, I don’t think I need the IR stuff… dual could be nice, haven’t used it so far… since I already have the lvx, I know how to use the UI… my tendency is more towards the MercuryX… I’ve watched already lots of videos of both…

    • @thepedalcollaborative
      @thepedalcollaborative  2 месяца назад +1

      Unless you’re a super fan of Strymon, I’d say the MercuryX on UI and capabilities alone. Some of the dual reverbs I’ve heard on the BigSky can be accomplished on the MercuryX.

      Thanks for your thoughts, I’ll let you know which one I buy but most likely the Meris, side note I also want the condor hifi…. i saw a video whrer you used it too!

      Oh you know it’s coming! To be fair presets for the original BS are already out and I think aside from the BSMX doing dual reverbs and IR, I can make some tweaks and we’re there! 😎

      The MercuryX can’t do dual reverbs or IR, but otherwise my initial take is that it can handle the sounds in the BigSkyMX

    Still not impressed by this pedal. Something I've heard across the board of the many demos is that it seems very muffled. Mercury X always comes off very clear and present. Has this been your experience?

    • @thepedalcollaborative
      @thepedalcollaborative  2 месяца назад

      Keep in mind that the only time I’ve spent with the BSMX is the 50 minutes spent making this video. I still have a bit of work to do diving into to.
      First impressions were that it’s a step up from the original BS in terms of features, but still has that same (tired at this point) Strymon “warmth” which changes the tone. Some people like it some people don’t.

    • @STROA13
      @STROA13 2 месяца назад +1

      @@thepedalcollaborative Yep, that's how it comes through. Obviously, youtube not like being in the room but many videos with all levels of recording quality sound like the rolled off tone knob feel.

    • @thepedalcollaborative
      @thepedalcollaborative  2 месяца назад +1

      @STROA13 right. YT compresses things and affects the sound in every video.
      I haven’t played this next to the MercuryX yet. That’s on the docket for this week!

    Strymon is no slouch but they definitely aren’t as adventurous as Meris. Kinda boring compared the the Mercury X.

    • @thepedalcollaborative
      @thepedalcollaborative  2 месяца назад +5

      I haven’t yet dug deep into what this new BSMX can do, but my initial feel is that it’s a great reverb for those faithful to Strymon wanting an upgrade. If someone is coming to the fork in the road between the BSMX and MX without prior experience to either the original BS or M7, I think the MX would win. More creative, easier to make original and unique sounds, and the UI on the MX is so much easier to use. Note: I use the text mode on the MX
      Note note: MX = MercuryX, BSMX = BigSkyMX

    Whats your honest opinion of this pedal? Worth it or ehh? I have a mercury x and love it but seems like big sky reverbs like bloom and cloud really have a wide lush dynamic range close to valhalla shimmer/room eventide blackhole plugins and was wondering what your honest opinion is. Expensive pedal but i paid for an h90 so this is chump change lol. Ill use your affiliate for it.

    • @thepedalcollaborative
      @thepedalcollaborative  2 месяца назад +1

      Great question! First of all, thanks for being willing to use our affiliate link. Just know that using it or not doesn’t sway the answer here. This is my honest thought:
      If you’re just looking to add the BigSkyMX (BSMX) to your arsenal, why not?!? But if you’re asking if you could replace the MercuryX (MX) that’s a tougher question. Since you love the MX I’m inclined to say don’t swap it for the BSMX. The Bloom algo for sure is hard to do on the MX. Cloud is a little easier. Also if you really want the Cloud you could keep the MX and just get a Cloudburst.
      If you can only have 1 that tough. My personal feeling is keep the MX. While the BSMX is an upgrade from the original BS, the sounds aren’t really THAT different from the BS. A little more clean and pristine. You have the dual and IR thing but really it’s nothing more than a souped-up BS, which if you’ve had, you can probably extrapolate your feelings from that one.

      @@thepedalcollaborative thank you for your honest answer. I appreciate that. Nope i would keep the mercury x either way. Its amazing pedal. I am just wondering if the bigskymx add anything. I love the cloud and bloom algos. I never had a BS pedal just demoed the plugin format and it was pretty dam good although i know the pedal format is better. I collect pedals so when i buy i very rarely sell them. My biggest question is just stereo with and dynamic range of the fx for comparison between the mercury and the bigsky if that makes sense. I notice the bigsky to me anyway has a little more narrow bandwidth with its stereo image but i bet thats because it would probably become a muddy mess with all the modulation and freeze functions you can employ with its params. Maybe wrong here but that is my 2 cents. I asked this question to another content creator and they agreed the bigsky had a bit wider and more dynamic range than the mercury in their opinion as well so thats why i wanted to ask you your opinion about it. Thanks so much.

    • @thepedalcollaborative
      @thepedalcollaborative  2 месяца назад +1

      @joeymc5272 I’ll need more time to dissect the differences between the two. So far I’ve heard both have wider and narrower settings. Both can get muddy is you do too much!
      The new BSMX has pan controls which help you with the stereo spread. There are ways to do it with the MercuryX too but it’s not as simple.
      If you have the funds then go for it! The BSMX is a great pedal!
