    I actually liked the pacing of this. Didn't feel slow or meandering to me, felt like a throwback to a time when audiences had patience and were happy to luxuriate in world-building etc. I never got the sense that time was just being wasted, which I do get with some other franchise installment type things.

    • @ximono
      @ximono 4 месяца назад +16

      Same! I do think it was going slow at times, but I like that. It never wasted time, only spent it wisely on worldbuilding and character development. In fact, I even liked the first half better than the second half, when "things got moving" and it became a typical Hollywood film with a predictable and unoriginal storyline with explosions and fight scenes. Albeit with a really cool finale.

      Im not sure, his main gripes seem to be with it being too much a setup for the next movies and not focused on being a good story by itself. Rise is definitely he weaker of the reboot trilogy but it is also the most different and could've easily stood on its own with no sequels

      @cumwotmayinat 4 месяца назад

      Yep, the set up and world building is actually the best half of the film, for me it's then too blockbuster towards the end. I really think they could be much bolder with exploring this world of a new intelligent species finding it's way and whilst I enjoyed the fiom I think the choice of director ultimately lacks ambition.

  • @MrSameerMalik1
    @MrSameerMalik1 4 месяца назад +7

    I started off similar to you in that I walked into my cinema wondering why this even exists , is it just a “saleable ip” as you put it, a cash grab, whatever, but by the end I was very invested and can’t wait to see the rest of the trilogy. I also think you missed the mark with a lot of the cgi - for every digital looking swinging sequence , there was a 100% real looking closeup of an orangutan or chimpanzee or gorilla face , animated incredibly perfectly to the point that you might not even realise it was cgi, emotive and relatable and entirely engaging. Whichever studio did this really smashed it out of the park.

    • @TheValeyard92
      @TheValeyard92 4 месяца назад +2

      It's spot on in most contexts except for this film.
      Are we really at a point where audiences and critics are so jaded that the mere existence if a sequel hook means that we write of the entire rest of the film immediately?

    • @scottishfilmhistorian
      @scottishfilmhistorian 4 месяца назад +1

      @@TheValeyard92 Yes. I think audiences are especially frustrated by this. (Although, it could be argued that we are responsible for it, as we clamour for a sequel if the movie is enjoyable.) However, that is it for me. A sequel should be earned rather than forced upon us. If we go into nearly every movie expecting the story to be left incomplete, should we not be jaded? Or at least frustrated? Critics probably aren't jaded though because it's their job to critique films and the more films there are, the more work they have.
      Also, he doesn't really write the whole film off, does he? He has numerous positives to say about it, he just comments (correctly imo) that the film was more focused on setting up a sequel than being a self-contained film. It's a perfectly valid complaint.

    I'm a little warmer on it than Mark, but I think for me this is a case where I like what I see, but I also see so much of the potential these ideas had and just wished they pushed it harder to do something fresh and properly expand this epic universe instead of mostly re-treading things we've already seen. For me, Beneath the Planet of the Apes is the film in the franchise that really shows off the wicked potential this concept has to do something kind of bonkers and out there, and the whole time watching this I kept hoping for some sort of reveal that would really surprise me - but it never came.

      Almost like the undergarments of a space suite.
      Also not one single reviewer as yet has questioned why mia is able to walk around post simian flue earth without protection and no worry of infection given she's handed items by the apes - one of the things we learned from Woody's colonel character in war,even if you're immune,you can contract it from physical touch.
      When she hand the console to the woman at the base the woman is in a respirator but she isn't.so she's totally immune.
      My theory is she was on Icarus,seen in rise,and the fell through a worm hole( a tunnel that steals light' as said by Noah).

    My impression of the film was in some sense the opposite of Kermode's. I loved the slow worldbuilding of the first half, where nothing of real importance happened. As the film "found its feet", once they got to the encampment, I found the storyline became pretty standard and predictable. Slaves plotting against a power-mad king, albeit with a bit of distrust within the group, and some typical action scenes. It's fine Hollywood entertainment, but I think I've seen it all before. I just don't think the plot was very interesting. Maybe the first half raised my expectations that this film might be something more than it turned out to be.
    If you like fast-moving plots, you probably won't like the first half. If you like slow worldbuilding and character development, I think you will.

    I’m up for it.i just re watched the Matt reeves trilogy for the first time since they came out with my 2 sons and we were all gripped. Caesar and Koba were fantastic well rounded characters and the strong human character cast - James Franco, John Lithgoe, Brian Cox, Jason Clarke, Gary Oldman and Woody Harrelson give great support to the CGI stars

    I have to agree with the issues around pacing and also the special effects. There was a scene where Noa was on his horse with an eagle on his arm and it just looked so fake. It took so long to get to the 2nd act

    Nobody should ever set out to film (or write) a ‘Trilogy’ from an original concept. If you aren’t adapting something lengthy from another medium, it should always be organic or it’s always going to contain filler.

    I really don't agree. I just watched in Imax and it was brilliant. Great story arch, not silly, and engrossing. And honestly, the originals were great when I was a kid, but watching them recently they really are clunky and 3 4 and 5 are just awful ( best left in the memory)

    I felt the same, the third act is the best part but the entire film is simply a setup. It is well directed, just that it didn't have much to say that the previous 3 didn't.

    I know what you mean about making a film to setup the other movies, rather than focussing on the film at hand. I felt like Dune did that.
    Incidentally, they've been doing that in computer games for years now. Holding back content for the next "iteration".

    I actually enjoyed the world building, and the time the film took. Where I agree with you is that there was too much hinting at things to come, and not enough story.
    Are we really going to have to wait another decade before we get to see what an advanced ape civilization will look like?! As a fan of the series, I don’t like that they’re retreading the conflicts of the previous trilogy.

    Have to disagree with Mark Kermode. I thought the movie wasn't slow more of a character study of the new characters coming into this new story line. As a matter of fact I wanted more of seeing the apes living their lives in their tribe and their daily routines than any of the end action pieces. One critism I do have is this follows a similar plot device to the last movie 'War for Planet of the Apes' as in the films first half is more of an open world adventure then the second half turns into an enclosed set piece, which I think works for this story but didn't go WOTPOA. Apart from that little critism I thought the acting really good (especially Noah' and didn't think the chi were shonky unlike Mark.
    I look forward to the continuing story line of the Planet of the Apes'.

    I liked it but got me when Caesar keeps saying it’s a lovely day etc in exact same way tone etc as in MadMax Fury Road . I would like seen what happens to Nova from last film.
    Also if they keep to the Original books make more sense .

    • @jameslacey5474
      @jameslacey5474 4 месяца назад

      First of all, there was only one book originally called "Monkey Planet" by Pierre Boulle (the author who wrote "The Bridge
      on the River Kwai", and the first film was loosely based off of that, all the other films have been adapted from the source material. Second, in the original film Charlton Heston's character, Taylor names a mute uncivilized woman, who was also captured with him in the hunt, Nova after the star (and who's considered and treated like an animal by the apes) In the recent trilogy Maurice, the Orangutan names a mute girl Nova after picking up a Chevy Nova nameplate emblem and giving it to her. In the new film, and I'm not really giving much away here, Raka the Orangutan says that he calls all humans Novas, so there is no continuity between the characters and the name Nova. As far as the Mad Max films and these films other than the dystopian future I fail to see the connection. Unless I'm missing something from both films.

    Loved it. Mark being harsh on rhe pacing and the story. This could have been an action only film, but this a very mature, charscter driven fil, wuth some thrilling action sequences where you care about rhe characters. and builds up nicely to its conclusion. It could have very easily just been a money making rip off of the first three, but no, this version is very respectful to the others and Mark fails to mention how the film addresses the question of apes and humans living together, instead of one or the other dominating the same land and all the moral problems behind that.. Looking forward to the next one.
