I just adore hearing Mark talk about horror films, regardless of whether he ends up liking them or not. Been anticipating seeing this film for quite a while, this just helps it more!
Saw it at an advance mystery screening in my local cinema. Packed screen, prompted five walk outs, I had to stop eating the food I ordered after a while because it was genuinely making me feel a bit nauseous. Gets about halfway through the film and I think "it can't get any worse", and then it does and it does and it does again. Absolutely insane, one of my favourite ever cinema experiences, my favourite film of the year and destined to be a horror classic. Loved it!
So I should skip the popcorn when I go see it.
@@stephennootens916 i had to stop drinking the milkshake i had personally. i can't imagine getting a food to chew on during it lol. I see like soooo many horror movies and i've seen some gross stuff but this genuinely got me grossed out at points.
@@stephennootens916😂😂
I was already very keen to see this, now I'm desperate to go tomorrow.....
@@stephennootens916 Lol I would... I was gonna buy a hotdog and I'm so happy I didn't now 😅
the walkouts in my advance screening were utterly euphoric. What a visceral BLAST. Wish tonally it didn't play for laughs so often but when it goes full throttle it's unbelievable and Demi Moore was a revelation
I genuinely think The Substance might be my favourite horror movie of all time. I saw it at a Scream Unseen viewing and I’ve never laughed, winced and gasped more watching a horror movie and I feel thats exactly what an amazing horror movie should do.
Sounds like a “what if Cronenberg made Death Becomes Her?” scenario
Eh, more Yuzna than Cronenberg imo
It’s like death becomes her on speed
Brian Yuzna would be proud!
Yup. This film is much more Yuzna than Carpenter or Cronenberg
im thinking of the shunt in society and if its half as good as that its going to be fantastic
Exactly, Society was a big influence.
This is the most perfect Kermode Mayo review ever! Watching Mayo think “not this body horror nonsense again” was golden!
The Substance is the best film I've watched so far this year, not just horror. Strap yourself in and keep an open mind, hopefully you'll enjoy it.
Saw it at Frightfest. Film of the year. Absolutely incredible
I saw this with the wife and she couldn't believe Demi Moore got naked. All I could do was hold her hand and say "Bless."
This was insanely brilliant. The sound design was amazing, you really feel every skin prick and laceration.
Carpenter’s The Thing and Mattel’s Barbie had a child…
I loved this film, managed to get tickets for an early showing in Manchester and was not disappointed. I'm going to see it again loved it that much. This film will be up for some awards I am sure of it
This is definitely going to be in conversation as one of the best horror films of the early 21st century. That ending is one for the ages. I don't think I've seen a wilder ending to an original horror film in a long time. It's like Verhoeven and Cronenberg cranked to volume 11. This better win best makeup fx. It'd be a crime if it doesn't.
Saw the substance a couple weeks early at an Odeon Scream Unseen showing and haven't stopped thinking about it since, i absolutely loved it, the body horror was top notch and both Demi Moore and Margaret Qualley's performances were excellent
A definite recommend for fans of either the actors or body horror, It definitely had some of the grossest scenes i've ever seen on the big screen but it was amazingly done and i can't wait to see it again! 9.5/10 for me 🔥
We often say you can tell if Mark hates a movie because he sighs before he starts. Here, I don't think I've ever seen him smiling so much at the start of a review.
Amazing performance by Makr Kermode!
He has this great ability to talk for ten minutes about a film in an entertaining, informative, passionate way, but without over-doing it and showing off.
Simon Mayo plays his role well too - interrupting at the right moment to ask for an explanation of a term, adding his own thoughts.
Thought my laptop was playing up watching this but it was just Mark's dodgy camera - very charming
Best bit. Mayos eyes after internal add 👀🤨
Saw this at a Scream Unseen and it hasn’t left my mind since. Feel like it’s going to be talked about for ages, but worth saying that while I loved it, my partner despised it!
With the third act, the unbelievebly squishy theatre scene.. my take was everyone has blood on their hands because everyone participates in it. Also their hate was thrown back into their faces.
Sounds like a Paul Verhoeven movie!
I saw it a week ago, one of the rarest horror films to legit disgust me in horror, I looked away, I screamed and had to take my shoes off as it was making me sooo uncomfortable, but I absolutely loved it, it was brilliant!!, bold, creative and very outside of the box, the performances are all great, safe to say it left an weird impact on me.
Not since maybe MEN or Beau is Afraid have I been kind of disturbed by horror and this left me kind of laughing a little too much when it finish, I was…. Speechless.
This an experience that I’ll never forget nor a film I’ll watch again…, but go watch it without reading too much into it and with a packed audience (If ya can), it’s totally worth it.
Was the shoe removal to enable proper toe curling?
@@GB_Rusty It was yes, not disrespecting the code of conduct but it did legit make me uncomfortable to the point I just had to take ‘em off.
This film is an absolute riot. I've seen better films this year, but nothing as much fun.
it's a wild wild ride and it's just hammer blow after hammer blow, it's fantastic, my only real problem with the film is that it didn't scare me, it's still brilliant though.
This sounds like an absolute event movie. I’m super hyped to see it!
Makes you wonder if Cronenberg himself has seen it and what he thinks of it?
⚡⚡⚡simply can't wait... Any Dorseteer fancy to go together!
I very much look forward to seeing "The Substance." Offhand, it sounds similar to "Seconds" from 1966. That yearning for youth and beauty. I'm game.
@@stevenmackay8053 Yes, Seconds is a fantastic film. The ending still haunts me
Haven't seen the movie yet but it sounds like if David Cronenberg or Stuart Gordon made Robert Zemeckis's Death Becomes Her (1992)
Edit, reading the comments it sounds like everyone had the same opinion.
Didn't Zemeckis tackle a similar concept with Demi's ex?
Cant wait to get to see this
I dont think that's correct
It’s absolutely 🤬ing insane and I loved it so much and it’s another milestone in Demi’s boundary-pushing career.
Ok, I NEED to see asap... I've been super excited since the trailer! I seem to have similar taste in movies to Mark, so that's a green light for me to see it over the weekend!
Absolutely loved it. Thankfully I went in knowing very little beyond the basic premise and it was all the better for it. The final act was quite something, but the whole film worked so well.
sounds genuinely horrific yet I’m sold on it somehow
Despite how good this movie is, I bet its message will still be lost on many viewers. No matter how unsubtle the movie is.
Yeah this film has alot to say beyond even the obvious messages
"unbelievely squishy" im sold.
Can't wait to see this film. *Waiting for it to land on streaming services*
The Substance exists at the intersection of Gerwig’s Barbie and Yuzna’s Society.
I don't think Simon is convinced.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ ⭐️
Wow. This is the best film of the year and also the best horror film ever. It won best screenplay at Cannes.
Demi Moore is amazing playing an ageing actress trying to hang onto her career and takes The Substance to make her youthful again. Just don't abuse it or bad things will happen! I can't describe how utterly gruesome and disgusting it was, yet I couldn't take me eyes off it. It was also hilarious in parts. If David Cronenberg had made Death Becomes her, this would be it. The makeup FX were astounding.
It's a film the whole family can watch!
This is the director for the Lovecraft adaptation.
🤔"Death becomes her" with a deeper look on the "bit of magic in a world of science" ?❓
Oh man I have to see this!
I saw this at Frightfest and loved it, my film of the festival. A mix of Cronenberg and Miike Takashi, it's not for everyone but those it is for will get a kick out of it
Incredible film that I just saw for a second time last night. Only narrowly inched out by Love Lies Bleeding as my favourite film of the year thus far, but yeah, jaw on the floor level good.
never mentioned Society (1989).
It's similar in a way, but the quality of makeup fx here is far better. Far more blood as well. It's an ending that will be remembered by horror fans.
The central premise reminds me a bit of Seconds - although that one was about a male mid-life crisis. Looking forward to seeing it.
I'm sold! I will see this film!
Could someone explain the significance of the dragon robe Sue wears?
@@dylanrays5 I assumed it was a Phoenix but I don’t know for sure.
@@lewiswrong the visual was gnarly next to the body with rough surgical stitches on the back. That image is just super cool.
Has Mark taken the substance and turned into Simon yet? The twitching and Mayo’s worried looks seems to imply so…would that is weeeeere so simple 😂
Revenge was basically the Crow remake everyone deserved
Yes !
great review cant wait to see this
Titane is one of my faves of the decade. Guess I'll have to see this one then!!!
@@hrmg I enjoyed Titane but liked The Substance much more. Have fun!
Saw this in a preview with an audience of 8 but no walk outs. Thought the movie was brilliant, brutal and grotesque for all the right reasons. One thing that I thought was how in your face the cinematography was I don't mean the horror aspect of it or the gruesomeness but how the images and text were massive and made you feel you really were watching something on a giant screen when watching most movies your eyes are accustomed to not noticing this as the movie plays. I personally think the third act goes abit to fangora and could have gone into darker place instead or a giore climax but brilliant movie.
me and my girlfriend are seeing it tonight. So excited
First time I heard about Rob Botin was for some of the effects in "John Carpenter's The Thing (1982)" and the name stuck because he did some spectacular work there.
Is this suitable for young children?
Different than "The Stuff?"
LOVE this movie!
This is the second film I've seen with Margaret Qualley (after Drive Away Dolls) where I've been alone in the front row, oblivious to the content of the film and felt a little self conscious. The Substance is good, but no idea how it won Best Screenplay.
Sounds like my kind of movie!
Nothing can really prepare you for it.
Having only seen the trailer, I was on the fence, but this review has made me jump through the fence. Can't wait to watch it.
Been gagging to see this, seems I won't be disappointed at all
Death becomes her 😊
Its a wonderful bonkers movie and i loved it
Watching this in Cannes at 8am made me and the packed crowd very queasy but it was the most fun I’ve had at this years festival. Can no wait to watch it again. Body horror is back in safe hands
I’m taking my squeamish wife to see this Sunday 😂
Such an enjoyable masterpiece!! And oh Demi Moore! I’ve always had such a soft spot for her and she’s proven me right!!
The fake blood business sure thrived thanks to this film.
It’s fucking nuts man, wow
Does death become her?
Loved Revenge. Can't wait to see this.
havent felt this sick since watxhing the dreadful Human Centipede 2
So fuckin fun
One of those movies I want to be able to enjoy but then probably won't because I'll chicken out. Mark Kermode must have an internal switch that allows him to turn-off what he's seen and get some sleep at night.
Sounds great! I’ll be watching this
Cannot wait to see it.
Wow, thanks for saving me the price of admission by telling me the entire plot!
Does Mayo ever smile? Every pixel of him on my screen seems to be begging for death...
I saw this and it's every bit as good as the review suggests. Just fantastic cinema. Easy the best movie of this year.
Some Annilhilation music there...cosmic birth scene in particular.
Was this film written by Karl Pilkington?
Very good but easily 30 minutes too long
Sounds a bit Tomie
CED alert.
Sounds bloody awful
Brilliantly made movie but just revolting.
Just a shame it's so slow in the first half and how much it labours on whats quite a simple and straightforward premise compared to Cronenberg's best.
I seem to be in the minority, but I found it boring and repetitive. There was lots to like in there (Demi Moore is superb) and I dug the whole vibe off it, but I felt that the screenplay was clunky and poorly structured and the pacing, both on a scene specific level and across the acts of the film, was flat and lacked escalation.
Much to admire, but needed a second draft and a good 30min dropped out.
To be fair, I did laugh a lot in the early going, but there's a moment in the second half where it breaks its own internal logic and I just couldn't get back on board.
This movie sucks. It's so misandrist and intellectually basic. And it goes on and on and repeats itself over and over. And devolves into nothing of meaning or... substance.
