Just two months on from the landslide general election and Starmer is having to field questions about the 100k worth of freebies he's received since 2019 and why his chief of staff, Sue Gray, is being paid more than the PM.
The story it tells is of frantic briefing around the PM by disgruntled special advisors. Is this a problem he has to fix? Or can he ignore it? And can he withstand accusations of 'sleaze' after labelling the Tories with that for so long? We talk to the Starmer's chief of staff before Sue Gray - Sam White.
And Aggie Chambre, LBC's political correspondent reveals to us the new rules for MPs at Labour conference.

It's been depressing watching the few pundits you could rely on to be honest in this country suddenly twisting themselves in knots to defend this. He was ambushed by season tickets, he didn't know thousands of pounds worth of clothes might look like a bribe. And this line of "Oh they should be paid more is absolutely *infuriating*. They're paid a fortune.

Pundits are like politicians - from the same entitled class of middleclass professionals who are completely out of touch with how people on low incomes live. I'd have more respect for Starmer's missus if she made her own clothes and he wore standard suits from M&S or some other British clothes supplier. So much for change! 🙄

Even if it wasn't wrong or against the rules, the optics are just terrible. You should be politically savvy enough to know that when you're talking about tough decisions and tightening our belts, going to taylor swift concerts and getting you clothes paid for, is not going to go down well

A declared bribe is still a bribe and this all being used to deflect from the much bigger issue about Labour declaring their £4 million donation from a very questionable hedge fund. There are no free lunches in politcs and there's no moral high ground here.

Why shouldn’t a Prime Minister and her/his family in any democracy appear before voters in what they can afford to wear? It’s the focus on designer wear that is unhealthy and distracting. They are people’s representatives not models!

There's no way Emily would give this much latitude to the PM if he was JRM. The fact is KS has dropped a clanger here. Nothing terminal, but it fails the smell test, at a time we are being asked to swallow more austerity.

In many local authority areas in this Country the Lord Mayor/Lord Provost receive a “clothing” allowance for them and their spouses so perhaps it’s more widespread than most people are aware of including those in the media.

Id love someone to do a deep dive into "the rules" for MPs and how out dated and self serving they are. They get cut price food in Westminister, they get money to own 2 homes, what can be claimed on expenses is ridiculous. They also accept gifts from donors and stupidly claim this does not influence decision making. Does anyone believe this? Civil servants, must refuse all gifts as they could be seen as garnering favour e.g. even a box of chocs. The guidelines on standards of behaviour for civil servants is right. Would any reasonable person accept the justification for MPs accepting gifts and the "blank cheque" culture for expenses. If the rules were changed, it would go a long way to filling the financial black hole.

It’s the smell test that matters, I can’t believe Starmer has be silly enough to lay himself open to this criticism, yes he didn’t break the rules but with much of the population having to tighten their belts what on earth made him think that accepting lavish gifts would look ok?, this is not the way I expected Starmer to behave, it’s a misstep that’s going to haunt him for a very long tie, ditch the perks Keir, all of them.

There's politically naive and politically inept. I'm generally extremely cycnical about anyone living in the Westminster bubble, but I didn't expect this level of being politically deaf, dumb and blind to how such matters would be inevitably be presented and play out in a predominantly right wing media. I really hope it's not just a consequence of them having such a huge majority they think they can be complacent.

You both earned more than the PM when you worked for the BBC … but left to make more money elsewhere … which you were entitled to do. But it’s a bit rich to criticise if no rules have been broken. Let’s change the rules.

6:12 Emily is spot on about Sam Cam, the optics of having a high end high street outfit over a designer donation is much better for a person in political power and their spouse. Marks and Spencer’s, John Lewis, or British designer if necessary. But I don’t think they should get clothes on expenses, maybe strictly work clothes could be tax deductible but if the PM and family aren’t paid enough to buy their own clobber, what does that say about the country. Sell us out for a fancy suit!
