I loved this, it is fascinating to hear Emily explain this again in more detail. Lewis' questions really made this so much more interesting. I could listen to these 2 for ages.
@@jogreeenWhat makes you say that? She just answered his questions, which involved herself. It was an explosive interview and only Emily is around to tell the story of what led to (as Andrew has been muzzled by the royal family).
My is she milking that interview for all it's worth, shame the woman that secured the interview in the first place seem to be pushed aside and never mentioned or given the praise she deserves, but I guess Emily wants all the glory.
This was such a fascinating interview with Emily, as Lewis asked questions i think many of us were wondering after watching the infamous interview. Looking forward to watching the drama series now.
Fantastic interview, I'm grateful to listen to two true professionals who represent what real journalism is all about. It's so rare in this world today.
A former work colleague had dealings with Andrew when they were both in the forces years ago, and said she found him to be the most arrogant and aggressively rude officer she’d ever encountered in all three HM Forces. Unlike all of the other officers, Andrew demanded they stood and saluted him whenever he entered their office.
What happens behind the scenes is much more interesting. What someone is thinking, but not saying, is often more interesting. The aftermath of her interview is still real.
Revealing News Agents therapy session. To me, Emily Maitlis demonstrated how to proceed as an effective journalist that can still carry the responsibility of the job, while maintaining both passion and humility. Not an easy thing to do. Really looking forward to the drama. Human beings are beyond fascinating on occasion.
Brilliant. What an insightful and honest interview. My favourite take from this is Emily’s sense of responsibility as a journalist to be as honest and balanced as one can be. Not true of so many others these days. My respect for EM is great.
That Andrew was so eager to offer up his "I don't sweat' story is such a fascinating detail; I think your genuine reaction in wanting to know all about adrenaline probably helped boost his confidence. It was truly a memorable moment, with Andrew smiling and shaking his head, thinking he was so clever. As if that one important detail was all that mattered with such serious allegations hanging over him - unbelievable.
Lovely to see Emily discussing her craft. What inspires her, the decision-making process, both individually and with the wider team, and the inner workings of her mind. Great job, both! 💖🌈🌸🖖✨
Yes. It makes me want to hear her talk about other interviews she's done. For example, the interview with Kari Lake. What was going through Emily Maitlis' mind and how she was taking the backlash etc
It would also be great to hear about the behind the scenes of the news agents as well; I know from a production stand point it's not as full on as a program like Newsnight, but still interesting to hear what life is like in the current day podcast world.
Hard to see past Gillian Anderson's portrayal in Scoop. The only criticism of that version of this story as that it didn't spend much time on the aftermath. Hopefully, this retelling will.
Dear Emily, I watched the series based on your life and famous interview with great interest. Congratulations on achieving a great success in life. I was surprised to learn in the third episode that politicians were afraid to come to your program, for fear that you would "pull a number on them". A person like me thinks that people have dignity and courage, how wrong we are. It's a pity that despite your success you couldn't stay at the BBC, but I think you created a place for yourself. Congratulations. In general, I thought that maybe you could also write manuals on how to do the job of a journalist, and how to ask questions. The one about questions would be useful in many professions, if you put the right amount of thought into it. Lawyers, psychologists, salespeople, teachers, scientists. I think that's a lot to think about. Once again, congratulations and I wish you much personal and professional success.
Ok my verdict is, I found The Scoop (Netflix) to be a more elevated re-enactment of the events than A Royal Scandal (Prime). I also preferred the portrayals of the actors in The Scoop than A Royal Scandal, barr Michael Sheen who was excellent.
Thinking of the words "News Room" makes me think of 'Drop The Dead Donkey'! All this aside, Andrew is a despicable, entitled man-boy. We should be grateful how this was brought out into the open!
This is my favourite interview ever. Emily, you are such a star 🌟… so many other journalists have that pompous feel to them, but you are just the most beautiful and down to earth being who really cares and yet also doesn’t get lost in any sense of shame or guilt. You represent everything that journalism should be… you get to all the details, you don’t take any cr4p, you can respond positively to anything thrown at you in an instant… and yet you also see the big picture and never forget you are dealing with just another human. I’ve loved getting a sense of who you are personally from the film… the dog, the rollers, the frenetic nature of your being (which I totally relate to)… Thank you for being you! ☀️
Enjoyed this - great behind the scenes insights on a fascinating topic. Shame they didn’t mention Scoop once, as being played by Ruth Wilson must be weird, but being played by Gillian Anderson must be more so surely.
My response to the Organise petition on hospital parking "Ask the King to confirm that he, Kate, Camilla et al had to send their respective chauffeurs to feed the meter!! Since they separated His esteemed namesake from his head we are said to live in a democracy in which equality and fairness reign. Let the King help supercharge our community's campaign and thousands of others will quickly follow! The state of the Head of State's head may depend on it"
Lewis and Emily are right. The drama hasn't ended yet. In terms of income and the properties the Royal Family occupy, it hasn't slimmed down at all and Charles shows no sign of really wanting to tinker with the status quo. Combine that with the relative indifference towards the Royal Family that many younger people exhibit, I can see public opinion continuing to shift.
I’m shocked he wasn’t coached by PR and lawyers about what to say in the interview, it’s clear that didn’t happen! Also, it’s wild to me that he thought the interview had gone well immediately afterwards. The ego!
Is there any other way to watch the drama? I live in NZ and signed up for Amazon Prime so I could watch, but it doesn't seem to be available in New Zealand!
As often happens with TV/ Movies and event happens and two separate teams work on a similar idea. The Netflix show scoop was based on the book by Sam Mcalister and focused on her story of organising the interview. A very Royal Scandal produced by amazon is inspied by Emily Maitlis book and focuses more on Emily and the rest of the Newsnight teams experience as well as the wider backstory.
At the time, I remember thinking somebody needed to bring a doctor on. If you couldn't sweat you would die very quickly (like within 6 hours) if you ever found yourself in 30 degree weather. It is the only way Humans can keep themselves cool and even a slight variance in body temp, (1-2 degrees) is deadly. So the follow up question was: Do you spend your life in an air conditioned room? How did you survive this mediteranean holiday? Do you never exercise? A weird lie, that is so easily disproved.
Yes you need to stay indoors on warm/ hot days and exercise is limited. A person will often black out, severe vertigo, faint and nausea and have to stay well hydrated, cotton/linen clothes with aircon/ fans on 24/7. You literally hibernate in summer. Out in early morning or evening only. Medically your hypothalamus malfunctions. It is real.
How many victory laps are Emily and Newsnight going to take about this interview? They nailed a high-profile figure - well done. However, Epstein apparently had a client list with 100s of names on it. And not ONE of those people has faced ANY type of legal scrutiny. The only person who has gone to jail is Epstein's girlfriend and the only person who has effectively lost his job is Prince Andrew. And that is because he is a fool who agreed to this interview. This story is NOT over - proper journalists should be asking why the men who abused these women are not being held to legal account. Bagging a member of the Royal Family is certainly worthy of a Netflix series, but it should not be the end of this story. When they speculate at the end of this interview about the impact, the focus is on the Royal Family. An incorrect observation anyway. The plan for a slimmed down monarchy happened years before Andrew's downfall. And they don't even mention that there are many powerful men who used Epstein's services who are still walking free.
Have you seen the video from body language experts analysing the interview? One of them made a point about Emily wearing a military-style jacket and suggested this was consciously or subconsciously intentional.
Andrew is a nasty, money-grabbing, foul-mouthed piece of work. Norman Baker revealed as much and more in his book, ...And What Do You Do? Anyone who wants to see what this horrible family is all about should read it. Emily did even better work revealing his character. Great episode.

I think Gillian Anderson did a great job in Scoop. As much as I like Ruth Wilson, it feel like (in my mind) she'll be competing against both real life Emily and Anderson's performance. In truth, an abundance of riches.
The actress in the Amazon Prime version of this has an awful voice. Very difficult to listen to. Glad to know you do not speak like that. Enjoyed this conversation.
They have spoken about it briefly a few times on the show. Its technically a rival production however. Emily was a producer on A very Royal Scandal, so it would be quite unusual for her to talk about the other version in much detail
A fascinating interview but I really do think it is a bit unfair on Emily to describe this as the interview of our times. Yes there was drama surrounding it and the implications were significant but she has achieved much more as an interviewer! Andrew was hardly bright enough for her to get her skills into!!!! Call me an old cynic (which I am) but wasn't this just a prolonged advert for the show she was being "interviewed" for? So, she gets paid to do the podcast AND she gets free publicity for the upcoming Prime show. All a tad distasteful to me.
Perhaps-naive question: Does this talk of "bids" and "bidding" for interviews mean that you're actually bidding/offering money, or is it more subtle than that? (Reputation, tone of voice, whatever...)
From what they've said before, its rarely money for this type of interview, its usually quite controversial when someone is given money for an interview, see Piers Morgans interview with the baby Raindeer
