I can't understand why this brilliant engine is only used in so few applications (already dying out so to speak) - it's a masterpiece and I love how they used all available key-technologies to create the best 'downsizing engine' in my eyes ... ISG, split oiling, Camtronic, E-Charger, electrified accessories, OPF/GPF, multi-spark and -injection, lean burn, etc. This could have been the best possible transition from ICE to whatever with less-emissions. They wasted years and stupid money to create this beauty but instead of using and promoting it they seem to not care anymore about it. When the engine was released my first thought was: 'Yes, put this thing in a RWD C-Class, brand it AMG C53 and nobody gonna miss the 'ol V8' ... now they put a four-banger in the 'C63' and nobody seems to care. The 4-litre biturbo V8 already wasn't a good replacement for the NA 6,2, but now it's even worse. I worked in the industry and I understand that the golden ages of ICE are over, but why can't we get a smooth transition? Does it have to end 'hard'? I love my M274 as daily driver (C 300) and I love my Viper with it's mighty NA 8,4 V10 ... the M256 with pure RWD or the H2-Wankel from Mazda (as in the Vision RX-9) would have been most interesting to me (last ICE jeweles) - pity that they never gonna make 'em :-( Engine freaks like me can only 'look back' now and focus on 'old cars' - shame.
All of this tech looks promising but the most important aspect is that it needs to be reliable. I feel that eventually when the refresh or later iterations of this motor are released they will have worked out the kinks. I also hope because it uses DFI it doesn't get the carbon buildup issue. Audi and Lexus solved that by adding a second set of injectors in the port to wash off the intake valves. Wonder if MB has used that in their DFI motors?
In-line sixes are fundamentally and technically better than V8's. They are naturally balanced and lighter for a given volume. And with turbo it has as much torque as a V8.
I understand the downsizing concept and i like the bring back the old inline six concept but , when i think Mercedes S500, i think on a powerfull size V8 well built sedan. #BringbacktheV8
There is nothing like electric turbo charger as there is no turbine. It's called electric compressor. What about cam shaft, cam chain and cam belt (it's not really need if all pumps are electric)? Are those old school parts still there or MB will finally start with variable valve control? I know the answer :( All these mild-hybrids are lame.. they should do proper hybrid, can't understand this approach, same as with shitty cheating VW.
S500 with 3 liter inline 6, the end of the mighty V engines is near

Anyone here knows if in the 2018 Mercedes A klasse petrol if they still use a renault in that one? not the diesel engine, the petrol. thanks

Rui Moital they still offer v8 in 2018. not so sure about the v12
I like them V8 biturbos but this Diesel has 340hp an 700nm. So actually it's powerful.

Japan has 2JZ and RB 26
German has M256 and N54
And then the fatal flaw, the timing chain goes every 100k's :)
Electric turbo failed, pls replace engine :v
How tunable?
Awesome engine! BMW and Audi gotta do something about it or they gonna be owned big time
BMW did it first
@@bavariaautomotive7692 They didn't. BMW doesn't have 48v engine.
