    I can't understand why this brilliant engine is only used in so few applications (already dying out so to speak) - it's a masterpiece and I love how they used all available key-technologies to create the best 'downsizing engine' in my eyes ... ISG, split oiling, Camtronic, E-Charger, electrified accessories, OPF/GPF, multi-spark and -injection, lean burn, etc. This could have been the best possible transition from ICE to whatever with less-emissions. They wasted years and stupid money to create this beauty but instead of using and promoting it they seem to not care anymore about it. When the engine was released my first thought was: 'Yes, put this thing in a RWD C-Class, brand it AMG C53 and nobody gonna miss the 'ol V8' ... now they put a four-banger in the 'C63' and nobody seems to care. The 4-litre biturbo V8 already wasn't a good replacement for the NA 6,2, but now it's even worse. I worked in the industry and I understand that the golden ages of ICE are over, but why can't we get a smooth transition? Does it have to end 'hard'? I love my M274 as daily driver (C 300) and I love my Viper with it's mighty NA 8,4 V10 ... the M256 with pure RWD or the H2-Wankel from Mazda (as in the Vision RX-9) would have been most interesting to me (last ICE jeweles) - pity that they never gonna make 'em :-( Engine freaks like me can only 'look back' now and focus on 'old cars' - shame.

      I have this engine and I absolutely agree. It's the best an ice could ever be. It's literally just a block without attachments doing its job: performance combined with smoothness and efficiency. Ultra dumb decision it was to choose an inline 4 for the c63. That engine does not consume any less fuel on longer journeys than the inline 6. Imagine all the hybrid systems falling away and having a C53 amg with 449hp m256 engine? I rathe would have seen that than what it actually is

      See *German* Wikipedia in articles on "Mercedes-Benz M 254" and "Mercedes-Benz M 256
      ". There, people maintain lists of models and motor variants in actual cars. And they keep the lists up to date. Most of the time. :-)

    How does this benefits me? All this complication for minimal gains in power and economy.
    Terrible trade off. The meager savings in fuel will be tacked on with expensive maintenance and repairs bills.
    1mpg increase and 20 horsepower you won't even feel. Damn germans.

      160ftlbs of torque that can fill the gap before the turbo spools for one. It also eliminates the accessory belt, allowing them to fit an I6 in a bay designed for a 4 cylinder.

      @jenzzbol 5 лет назад +6

      You gain about 150 Ib-ft of torque. Quite significant in low revs.

      The Germans? You act as if the EPA doesn't exist lol. You get what the majority voted for: brainless green bullchit that doesn't do anything besides draining the wallets of the lower and middle class. That being said, I don't really see any specific issues with generator/electrical engine as part of the engine block. There's no complicated moving parts or sensitive electronics/sensors/chips in there, just plain old and beefy copper wires. And since it came out, it's proven itself to be reliable.

      car is silly smooth and feels extremely modern. Engine might only be a 3.0 but it feels bigger. Whenever you start to push the pedal it instantely gets moving, while remaining a fuel consumption under 9 Liters, which is nuts for 400hp and 2 tons

    • @peterking3131
      @peterking3131 Год назад +2

      Drive it first, then you will have no more question. It has V8 feel and 4-cyl consumption. A marvel.
