This video sees me hiking high in to the mountains for a sunset landscape photography shoot. I discuss 3 mistakes to avoid when on such a trip, but I only manage to avoid 2 of those mistakes. I shooting with my Fuji GFX 50r and hike to the summit of Dow Crag in the lake district national park.

After watching just one of your videos, when I see Thomas Heaton, I click regardless of thumbnail or title. Your skills are admirable and your dialogue informative and educational. Thanks bunches!
I very much identified myself in your thoughts, man! My channel is about the same: a man with a camera in the field, and that is it. But the thing is that you already reached a point where your channel is no longer necessarily about photography, but about experiences, lifestyle and you. And plus, stunning photographies. People (myself included) would watch you no matter what you publish. If you publish a video about yourself cooking in the van, I'm going to watch and enjoy it. So you don't need to play the RUclips game, because you already won it. You are cool, charismatic, have a dream campervan, make stunning adventures, so every video will be special. Keep it up man, you really rock and are a great inspiration for me!
I don’t need a title or thumbnail, once I see Thomas Heaton come up I’m definitely watching it, end to end.
You just have a way of coming across as genuine and I think that’s part of your appeal, there are too many RUclipsrs trying too hard.
Your videos are like a real production with a start, middle and end. It’s one of the few landscape photographer videos that I can relax with and settle down into; watch with my morning coffee or my evening beer. As good as your photography is, it’s not the sole reason for watching your videos; it’s the art you create with your videos that is also the appeal.
Thanks a lot. Evening beer viewing sounds best to me. Glad to hear you enjoy the filming side of things too.
Really well said. It’s our Wednesday night date night. We enjoy a glass of wine or a Guinness and just sit back and enjoy watching together. Wonderful story-telling.
Alan hit the nail on the head. I settle in with cold beer at the end of the day, watch your channel and Morton Hilmers, as his is the same regular person taking amazing photos, and find inspiration. It’s great.
Over half a million subscribers is testament to your style and approach to creating your videos Thomas. There is always something to take away from your videos and for probably the majority of us, you take us to places that we are unlikely to get to or perhaps only a few of the places. Loved the images this week and great spot with the birch trees
There’s a reason you have 509K subscribers. You’re KEEPING IT REAL. I hate flashy click bait, I hate gear reviews, I love the genuine approach you take and have truly been inspired by you. Keep it up!!
Thanks a lot. Glad you liked the images in today’s video.

Great video as always.
No need for clickbait.
I will always come back if you keep up your style and spirit
I feel the pain of thinking of the title. It's like trying to name a portfolio image. I personally love the rants it is one of the things that brings me back week on week. As you are not a "Click Bait" title grabber. As you said Photography, Landscape & Hikes! What more do you need :) Great video again the pastel colours in are class.
Thanks, Sean. It’s nice to hear that you return each week for the hikes and photo adventures.
Sounds like a title to me that “Photography, Landscapes and Hikes”
"You. Out with Camera."
Since the videos are entertaining and since you switched from being a photographer to being mainly a (RUclips-) entertainer, you hit your goal, so keep it coming, you're doing a good job entertaining your viewers. "You. Out with Camera" is good enough
I’m glad you refuse to engage in clickbait. It’s sooo bloody pervasive, now! Keep on keeping it real, Tom. There will always be a huge market for intelligent, authentic people like you.
Thomas, I’m a new photo-taker from Texas, US, not yet a photographer, and what I like most about your channel is the recording of just how your day and photography went, good or bad. Maybe especially the bad days, because that’s how the days go. One gets out of the car with camera, walks, takes images, falls down, messes up, and occasionally gets blessed with a really good image. Yours is a real vlog of a guy out doing it. I subscribed because of that, not because of a catchy title. Don’t worry so much about that. Just keep it real, and real people will follow.
I appreciate your integrity in not creating “click bait “ titles and I’m sure it is difficult to find the right balance in creating interest however, in truth the only enticement I need to watch a video is the “Thomas Heaton” part. Always enjoyable. Thanks!.
Hi Thomas. This is my favourite type of YT video - just a man on a hike with a camera. There's no need for click-bait thumbnails and titles. I look forward to your videos each week and it is your videos that inspired me to start my own channel. Keep it up, and remember the first rule of rural mechanics: "If it ain't broke, don't fix it"
You never know what story you will meet when you go on a trip! This is the essence of photography! Thanks Thomas!
Like a few others here I would also like to say that I’ve been watching your channel for years and look forward to your videos every week. The thumbnail and title doesn’t matter to me at all. I’ve recently tried to remember to hit like on every video, and I honestly wouldn’t mind if you reminded us more often, I feel like you almost never do.
I really love this channel, I’m subbed to over 200 channels on RUclips and this is high among my favorites. Such an underrated channel, but maybe that’s what I like about it.
Also I recently bought your book, and it’s beautiful! Highly recommended for other hardcores out there
We don’t need a catchy title or thumbnail to choose to watch your channel, Thomas Heaton! You won our hearts a long time ago!
And your background music is the best! Cheers!
I love to see how much you verbalize the issues you're having while taking an image and how it seems like you're not having a particularly good time with the subject and then turn around and show an amazing photograph.
Your process gets me inspired.
As a photography youtuber who views you as the gold standard for preparation... this was super refreshing. glad to see others just making it up as they go lol. Amazing photos man
I just love your meanderings Thomas - it is your personality that makes these videos so watchable and popular. Don't overthink it, just "go out and take photos".
the photo with the rocks in the foreground is simply brilliant
"But I don’t want to play the click bait game either, I refuse to do that. I don’t really want to play the top tips game either, or the new gear game. I just want to go out and do photography and create". This is why you are a true photographer. you are about the PHOTOGRAPHY. Thank you for all your years of service to the art and look forward to more in the future sir!
If it helps to know, we are regular viewers tuning in every Wednesday, looking forward to doing so week to week. Thumbnails and the like make no difference, we’d still show up. Perhaps they’re useful for attracting new viewers? Anyway, we thought tonight’s segment was marvelous and the final photo soothing. Would be lovely to contemplate while practicing yoga.
I think the key to your videos is laying out your adventure/plan/route early on in the video and just letting it unfold beautifully or tragically for the remainder. Getting out and shooting images good and bad in weather fair or foul is what this channel is about. You’re way too self aware sometimes, the channel is stellar!
I watch just because it’s Thomas Heaton and the style is enjoyable, never click bait or reviews etc, just taking us along on your photo journey.
You not playing the top tips game that I see repeatedly is what bores me with other landscape photography channels. Your channel has videos that inspire creativity and are much more personal in nature. Great work as always. As another viewer mentioned, we just see another Heaton video and we love them
Don't get discouraged! I've been watching your channel pretty regularly for about a year now. I like your channel over most. I like your format. Your personality and skill as a photographer is why I keep coming back. And your van! I like the van!
Thank you for not giving into the click-bait title game. I've stopped following other photographers because of that. It's just so disingenuous and frustrating. You are my favorite photographer on YT because of how honest and genuine you are, along with being a wonderful photographer.
I don't care if you rinse and repeat forever. You inspire me to make photography what I am going to do for the last 30 years of my life. I want to hike a part of the Isle of Skye, go out and make some photos and some mistakes along the way, and learn to appreciate the world around me now and in the future. Heck, my wife wants me to have a camper van! Your book, calendars, talks and channel keep me inspired. Cut yourself some slack and keep keeping on.
I agree with everything you said, I HATE the "You're using your tripod wrong!", "This is why your pictures aren't getting better.", etc.. Just show me your hike, talk me through your thought process, and show me your pictures. But like you said, RUclips makes that very hard. I have followed you for many years now and always love your content, keep up the great work sir.
Thank you for not click baiting! Regardless of title I always learn something from watching your videos.
Thanks a lot. Although, I did click bait a little :)
You don’t need a fancy thumbnail or title Thomas, your ability and results are what we watch for, you do a great job explaining everything and it has helped me out. Keep on keeping on mate. Great channel.
You are genuine, no need to qualify. People enjoy your videos because of this fact
Not sure, I ever read the titles of your videos. Watching these because I know I'll enjoy following you along.
Honestly, I truly enjoy the consistency. I dont see it as boring, its a great way to document your adventures and show people the real life of a photographer. This is it. Its not super glamorous. I love it. Also… please dont clickbait. I will leave. 😂
No need for bait - as so many others have stated, I enjoy your videos no matter what.
Your channel is one of my absolute favorites!
You already have a dedicated audience. No need for click baits. :) It's harder for us with smaller channels. For us it's very tempting to do the click bait thingy. I try to avoid it as much as possible. Great video btw! :)
I completely agree 👍
We don’t need gimmicks Tom, we know what to expect from your videos, and that is good enough to keep us interested. Carry on as normal.
I stumbled upon your channel in January, & I have spent the majority of my time since then just watching your videos. Never have I ever looked at someone and gone, ”That’s what I want to do for the rest of my life”. You make me want to do this for the rest of my life. So, don’t worry about the people who don’t click on your videos because it’s not clickbait enough, ‘cause the ones that have aren’t going away anytime soon.
Morning Thomas, I would just say go out and do your thing, do what you love. We all love your videos and we will always be here for you, watching your amazing and inspirational content. Try not to get bogged down by things that are not important like thumbnails etc. Just enjoy doing what you’re doing. Take care on your travels and thank you for bringing such quality into our inboxes.
Speaking personally I watch your channel to see someone who knows what they're doing and enjoys it, and see some nice locations that I'll never visit. Keep doing that and I reckon you're gold, cheers
Click bait is cheap and you are not cheap Thomas, you are class. You could call it ABC123 and I would still watch it. It’s you we love and not the titles.
"Guy/Gal out with their camera taking pics" is a thumbnail I'll click on every time. I enjoy seeing someone go out and take pictures without trying to tell me something or explain something. I find them much more inspiring. Leave the camera reviews and how to be a better photographer and do this and do that out. I understand the RUclips algorithm is a pain. Just keep doing what you. And thanks for sharing what you do.
Thomas, don’t bother with that click bait, title or thumbnail thing.
We are not here for that, we are here to see your photographic ups and downs.
We are here to learn from your mistakes and successes.
I have been a follower for 6 years now and every time you publish a new video, you inspire me (and many others) to go out and hike, shoot, and all that while enjoying the beauty of Nature.
Keep doing what you do, keep being you
Its my Wednesday afternoon when that Thomas Heaton notification hits and most of the time all my office work gets to a standstill until I finish the video. Keep it real and keep it coming Tom.
If you keep making videos as great as this I don’t mind at all what click bait titles you want to give them. I just appreciate the amazing free content you provide.
Thumbs up for the pointy rock image; the light really made that one.
EXACTLY!!!... no clickbait please! YOU dont need it. As Andy May said in the comment below, all it takes is your name. The sense Im getting from your channel is calm professionalism and thats what we like :D Dont ever make it look cheap by doing those thumbnails and then us finding out that the content is not even close to the exaggerated thumbnail :D I watch your videos for how they are put together along with the music. Everytime I see your new video notification I look forward to calmness along with the good choice of music and photography of course. Im definitely not the biggest fan but I can tell you you're the only youtube photographer I subscribed to Keep up the good work...
I'm fed up with the clickbait titles of other channels so I appreciate your simplicity.
Thomas, I've been a photographer for over 10 years and recently I've been very ill which keeps me from going out and doing photography. I look forward to your videos, they allow me to go on photography hikes with you and see the beauty. Thank you for that.
I hope I'm not the only one, but I watch your videos for a variety of reasons, none of which have to do with lists, tips, or gear. I've stopped watching many other photography channels because they focus too much on that sort of thing, which I find over-simplifies and cheapens the art form, as if you can just compile enough nuggets of proverbial wisdom to become an expert overnight. Like most other skills, you can learn far more from just observing professionals at the top of their game. I respect and admire your work. Your videos showcase the process of photography, the mindset of a photographer, and the beauty of a part of the world I don't get to visit. That's more than enough to gain my viewership. You would know better than me the numbers of it all, but there are people on RUclips that do well enough on the reputation of their content without clickbait. Kraig Adams comes to mind. Keep pumping them out and I'll keep clicking.
I always watch your videos for relaxing in the evening or waking up in the morning, I understand that you want to evolve your "RUclips game", but always keep the soul, that you gave your videos.
And only do what you want to do and not what other people or the internet tells you to do.
you, your camera and your creative photography is more than enough for me, just love watching your videos! Don't need the tumbnails, and screaming of tips, you just talking your way through the taking of the shots makes me enthousiastic about landscape photography, gives me lots of learning opportunities and urges me to get out myself... don't want anything more 🙂
I started watching your channel 2 years ago and have probably watched all your content. I find them inspiring and educational. No need for anything else, in terms of content. It’s perfect!
I don't come here for gear reviews, photography tips or errors. I come here tp join your journey through the endless photo opportunites. And by seeing how you see your surroundings I learn to have a different look on mine.
Keep doing what you're doing Tom! I love it. Screw the algorithms and the click bait style. It's not you. I love your authenticity, honesty, good stuff and bad stuff. Love the camping, the hiking, the scenes, the stories, and most of all the photography. Your part of the world is so different to mine and I love seeing it through your lens and ideas.
Absolutely love the second picture! Beautiful warm tones on grass and craggy rock ist just amazing. Thank you for the video!
Dude, you dont NEED the type of video like "dont do this and that"
People do that to have something to show, cuz they dont have the storys you have to tell.
Keep the awesome work dude, you are one of the bests ♡
Taking great images is a wonderful bonus when you’re having fun and enjoying nature. Well done!
Hey Thomas, with more than 500.000 subscribers you should not worry too much. They know what to expect and love it no matter the title. At 9:22 I thought he should shoot it from ground level but your final image I like.
As soon as I see Thomas Heaton in my notifications I'm there. Don't care about thumbnails and titles. I know it's going to be worthwhile.
Thomas, the thing that makes your channel so enjoyable to watch is the passion you have for photography. That passion is the Click Bait and it’s not a gimmick. I’ve been a student of yours for over a year now, please keep sharing your love and enthusiasm for creating with us. You don’t need to change a thing.
Each image got better and better. You might not think the last is a portfolio image but it was my favourite.😍 The pastel colours in the sky juxtaposed against the silhouette of the mountain and the sun suspended above...just amazing❤️📷
Your photos are like a treat after the meal of the video. I really appreciate all the work you do to shoot and present these adventures. It’s a LOT of time and effort, and you make it appear effortless.
I always make a cup of tea before I sit down to watch your videos. It's just pure relaxation. No f-stops, iso or other complications. The quick book plug worked so well that I just ordered it 😊. Looking forward to it.
As always Thomas, another great video.
Hi Thomas, each week I'm looking forward of the cup pf tea and your video! Your quality of work, the inspiration you give us photographers and the struggles you share with us make your videos special. Thanks so much.
You just keep being you, Mr. Heaton, I think I can honestly speak on behalf on most of your followers, that this is what brings us back for every new video.
I find myself getting repelled by condescending titles in the style of "Avoid these mistakes", " Stop doing this or that, or the other" and such. Some pretty fine photogs started going this way and pretty much lost me.
I completely agree. Having seen the title of this video, I actually skipped it initially! But I really learn from the content, even after 50 years as a hobbyist photographer, so I came back almost because I felt a void as a result of not seeing a video that Thomas had taken his usual great care in putting together. Plus the beautiful landscape of the Lake District. I don't really believe content producers get more REPEAT viewers because of click bait titling. Long term viewer growth must come from loyalty and quality content and production values generates loyalty.
Really enjoyed this weeks video. Keep snapping!
Keep doing what you're doing Thomas. Been watching for years, they never get boring. You probably inspire more people to get out there and shoot.
Expecting epic stuff from Tom this year!
Great pictures of beautiful landscapes. That’s what makes me come back every week. But, can understand the struggle.
Thank you. Enjoyed this one
Hello Thomas, the fact that you don't make videos like that is the reason I look forward to your videos. I've learned a ton about photography from you and your videos have helped me be happy with my own work. Keep doing the amazing work you do.
"DO THIS to finesse your compositions!" Thanks Thomas for not falling prey to the temptations of clickbait, cheesy titles and "top XX tips/rules", etc. Personally it's something I find very off-putting in general, though of course I would not have any problems with you doing it, knowing the genuine, humble, easygoing person behind it ;) Actually one of the reasons why I find your videos so enjoyable and relaxing - that and the great photography, of course!
Really love that sharp craggy rock field foreground shot, lovely w/ the misty mountains.
We love your contents Thomas. So keep it up.
You are one of the few guys doing this that I can listen to. You seem like a nice guy and that comes through!
I love your videos, they inspire me to appreciate the areas near me instead of being frustrated that I can't travel to my dream destinations just yet. Thanks for the advice, great video.
Great as always Tom keep up the good work
Second image was absolutely stunning. 👍
Keep doing what you are doing. We love it. Its real life.
Love that sunset shot ❤️
If you're a genuine fan of the content, you come back for the content so long as it's just you being you and enjoying what you do. I couldn't care less for the title or the thumbnail, I come back for pretty much every episode, as I do for other channels I genuinely enjoying watching.
All three images are great. I really love the sunset shot! Great stuff!
I love everything about this channel, man. for real.
Hey Thomas, you just do it very well. You show the full process of photography, enjoying it, and thank your shares.
Hi Thomas, Love every videos you have made. Beautiful shots, fun talks. Looking forward to another video.
I'm glad this came up. I rarely watch other photography channels these days as they are full of clickbait and it just doesn't resonate with me and my photography interests. What brings me back to the Heaton channel is the authenticity. I enjoy getting a look into experiences, seeing the locations I dream of, (based in Utah myself), and how you show the ups and downs of your adventures. I really enjoy all of it. As someone who creates for a living, I know it can start to feel redundant but it's usually about that time new ideas break loose. Your switch to film, the camper van, and even the time you took a bicycle around your area - all new ideas. Just keep it up. You are on the brink of something I'm sure.
Thanks for sharing your experience with great comments & suggestions... great location & results.... cheers from Australia 😀
Thanks Thomas for another great video. The reason why I keep watching your videos is that I love your "rinse and repeat" format. It's always a high quality watch. Looking forward to next one.
Another great vlog Thomas, I particularly loved the summit sunset, beautiful tones and layers. Thank you for sharing your adventures.
Just keep doing what you’ve been doing and I’ll keep watching. Your videos are great!
Thank you Thomas. You've reignited my long forgotten passion for photography. I've gone on 4 big hikes so far this year!
I just enjoy your videos regardless of thumbnail or title. I love photography and hiking and when I'm at a low in either hobby watching your videos get me motivated. Just keep up the awesome work and your content on RUclips.
My wife and I have a standing date for Sunday afternoon; Cocktails and a Thomas Heaton video. Haven't missed one yet.
I enjoy your videos -- regardless of any mistakes you make or how you do it. You almost make it interactive because you talk about what you feel/think of the situation and it's not all choreographed to perfection. I watch your videos for inspiration when I have "photographer's block" and it helps me see things in a different way. keep up the awesome channel! /From Canada!
"Just want to go out and do photography and create" these words of yours are exactly the reason why I am hooked to your channel Tom. Never bothered to look at thumbnail either....simply play the video from notification. Keep going out and keep creating and keep being honest as you always are...
Love that last image. It's beautiful. Look forward to the next one :)
Love your videos regardless of thumbnails or not, just tag along, listen and learn. As for now it's not easy for me to go on longer hikes, so it's just wonderful to follow you on yours. great video as always.
Love the second shot Thomas- the pointy rocks with the hills disappearing into the misty background 👍👏
10:21 is phenomenal. One of my favourite landscape images I've seen.
I watch the videos every week. I love your content so much and it's so inspiring.🤝
