    That's years and years of skills right there. Never thought that there was this much work to build an engine right.

    If you ever wondered why building a race/ high performance engine is "expensive", it's not the parts, it's the time/skill involved to build them. Amazing video, way more interesting than slapping parts together and torqueing some bolts

    Now that’s how to prepare for an engine build, after watching this it’s no surprise that my first engine build at the age of 17 with a VW golf 8v gti went POP after 600miles and burst it’s guts over the A75 in sw Scotland

    As an owner of a DNWA RS3, not just the for the sheer cost involved of custom rotating assembly, but more so finding someone who *actually* knows how to rebuild these motors with the precision and knowedge shown here scares me. Unless doing a big power stage 3+ build, I think I would simply re-order a factory block with OEM pistons, crank etc for simplicity.

    Ricky your work is top notch mate. The attention to detail you show is phenomenal. I had no idea of the designed variation in thickness of the rod bearings. Is this is because of the 'crush' aspect of tightening the rod bolts? I love all the Mitutoyo metrology gear you have, brilliant stuff ain't it? The ring gapping machine is a bit trick too, much better than putting a ring lightly in a vice and filing it lol Great video, can't wait for the next episode.

    is balancing the crank needed? Theres no mention in this or the next video of any balancing on the crank or rotating assembly.

    • @REPerformanceUK
      @REPerformanceUK  Год назад +2

      Yes we do balance bottom ends but you have to be careful on these engines as the flywheel is fully floating.

    • @NA-xz4wj
      @NA-xz4wj Год назад +1

      @@REPerformanceUK thanks for the reply. Just curious if there was a reason you didn't show the balancing. Would be very very interesting to see this process and how the aftermarket rods and pistons are accounted for in the balancing along with the dual mass flywheel. Some shops i'm quite sure are cutting corners on this bit.

    • @REPerformanceUK
      @REPerformanceUK  Год назад +2

      @@NA-xz4wj we don’t have the equipment to do it in house so we use an external company. We weight everything and provide them with weights etc then provide the crank, pulley and flywheel assembled for them to do.

    • @NA-xz4wj
      @NA-xz4wj Год назад +1

      @@REPerformanceUK Rick in your opinion is it ever OK not to balance the crank on these engines? Your video series has been an eye opener as the quality of some shops "builds". I see quite a few now dropping in rods, r rods and pistons with no balance.

    • @REPerformanceUK
      @REPerformanceUK  Год назад +2

      @@NA-xz4wj You'll be amazed at how badly balanced a stock engine is. It is part of our process to balance everything and it does improve engine smoothness but also bearing longevity. Providing the rods and pistons are matched i don't think you can make it much worse than OEM with drop ins but we dont do "drop ins".

    Will you match the biggest pistons to the biggest bores now?
    What would be out of tolerance on either the piston or the bore and how would you address that?
