In the early 80's I was driving a 1981 VW Scirocco. I was running flat out on a divided 4 lane, at around 100 mph, when I noticed a red car overtaking me. For some reason it looked like a Mustang when I first noticed it at a distance. As it got closer I could tell it was not a Mustang and I saw the 4 rings (my eyes were much better then). It was a Quattro ( fender flairs and all). It passed me like I was sitting still. Years later, my son and I started work on the Scirocco (it was in great cosmetic condition). We stuffed a 5 cylinder Audi in it, nice little pocket rocket.
I was at Waterfest when it was still at Englishtown ( 2000ish or so) and there was a kid in what looked like his mom's wagon, annihilating people on the strip. It was a total shitbox littered with Marlboro packs and Mountain Dew cans. A real rolling dumpster. I remember being perplexed when he popped the hood and it was just a (seemingly) stock 5 cyl. To this day, the "Filthy 5" is the only car I remember.

While both engines fall under 07k family nomenclature, there is much that differs from the two. To say its slept on is a stretch too. No more or less potential then many of the base offerings VAG had at the time.
@@jdllewellyn580207k is 07k, just like LS is still LS whether it's from a truck or a Camaro.... Of coarse they are different versions but still in the family of engine. Second your wrong, this engine is very underrated especially compared to the overhyped tsi family of engines. The VW 07k makes the same amount of power no matter the tuning stage but in a way more reliable manner then TSI. while still sounding like a an old group B quattro..... That is while the engine wasn't supposed to be tuned and VW handicapped the ease ability of tuning so it won't hurt GTi sales. Very impressive with all the context.
Just like the Daza and the 07k found in rabbits and jettas are vastly different. Go put daza head parts in an 07k, its not a direct drop in. At that rate you can use all sorts of 2.0t parts like pistons, and some valves, seals, etc, but nobody calls it an 07k with one less cylinder. The list goes on. I totally get it, theyre cool man. I was one of the first guys trying to build an 07k into a c5 chassis in 2015 (07k, efr9180 using a split housing and a variable a/r, 01e trans, custom pan etc) and scrapped it because of cost vs just building my 2.7t for enjoyment and sold it off before it ended up in a b5s4 swap way later. While there is potential, my claim was that it has no more potential than any other base VAG engine. People have been spinning german 4 cylinders, 5 cylinders, 6 cylinders and v8's for years. All platforms carried a notoriety of modding. 07k sounds nothing like a traditional 10v group b car did, hell a 7a, 3b, AAN or any 20v variant doesn't sound like those old 10v beasts, let alone the engine you mention. They aren't handicapped to make tuning harder, those ecu's have been cracked for years and OTS tunes are everywhere for them. Are the different from me7 and med variants before them? Well yeah, but so is every generation bosch ecu lol. At the end of the day they're great but I would say they're far from underrated. People new what we were getting, and the envelope was expected to be pushed from the beginning because it's what always happens. Case and point, look at every generation of vw rabbit, jetta, quantum, passat, fox or whathaveyou, and you'll see a modding prowess with a community developing it continuously further, base model or higher trim.

Great video.
It should also be mentioned that between the quattro and the TTRS, the general head and block design was utilized to make ferrari 10 cylinder motors. This helped refine the head design to modern day standards and personally I feel those improvements are what made the TTRS such an amazing motor.
@@east_coast_s4554 Correct. I have an RS3 but like I said I’ve spent a lot of time driving an S3. It’s definitely worth the jump in price just for the engine alone.
I just bought an '87 turbo quattro with 155k miles. Single owner, garage dweller, straight and clean. It's my first Audi. Hopefully it will fare better than my last two projects. They were both annihilated in random collisions on public roads with inattentive drivers.
Should have mentioned the AAT/AEL 2.5l TDI engine blocks. People convert them to petrol and swap in an AAN head. Its a stronger block and can make more power.

It is a shame the newest Volkswagens don't come with the 5 cylinder. On the highway if you watch ONLY highway MPG you get 37 or more! I found that with my 2013 Passat when I took it down the highway. I reset the average MPG once I got to around 65 and set the cruise control . All I did then was adjust my speed for the few cars that were ahead of me. It is only when you get to a congested area that the number starts to drop. Ironically, pushing the accelerator some only seemed to make that number go up a bit! Logic would have you expecting the opposite and that is OK, we normally would think that way but that is why some people think differently!!!
Fun fact - The S2 turbo and manifold parts fit on the VW ABF 16v engine (possibly the Audi 9A too). Remove the fifth banks, blank them off and bolt th straight on.

would like to make a few corrections here. RR/3B motronic is also M2.3.2 just like what powered the AAN, ABY and ADU engines. the later is just a revised version of the earlier ECU. the RR, 3B, AAN and ABY all made the same power levels. the real motronic M2.3 ran the audi 3.6 V8 and a few 32V 4.2 V8's. I know for a fact that all the 5 cylinder motronics are all the same because i have ran 3B ECU with RR software in it and it works plus i have modified 3B ECU's to run on ADU RS2 software and that also works extremely well when recalibrated properly. you gain things like the overboost function from the later ECU, better knock control code and a better diagnostic system when doing this. lastly speaking of the RS2 the MAF itself it is no different electronically than any other 20V turbo MAF. the only visual difference was that a screen was added to the ADU MAF for turbulence across the hot wire. what really made the difference in the ADU RS2 pertaining to the MAF was that R201 or resistor 201 on the bottom side of the boost board which is the voltage divider circuit for the MAF was changed to a 6.5k ohm resistor from the AAN/ABY's 6.15k ohm resistor. this modification was made for the RS2's larger injectors and 3.8bar fuel pressure regulator. what this does is change how the load is calculated when the ECU is in open loop boost/fueling acceleration. they did this because the ECU software itself actually doesnt have an injector constant. bosch had to make the change for fueling on a hardware level instead of software than compensate for this over all in software by rescaling the load axis's on the tables and values that used load itself. take it from me, i know more about this motronic than bosch does at this point.
I know vw/porsche are nuts from driving my 300hp r36 vr6 it pulls with turbos and supercharged euros just fine n/a!! The vw vr6 is truly a proven motor in the drags as well even more so than the daza..with a lil more displacement.
Simply put, this is all great info, but here's the fact based of simple physics. It's an inline. V platform motors make great power, can't deny that. But the most simple and basic factor will ALWAYS dominate with any oscillating piston engine. Inline configuration, any way you look at it is more efficient because of the elimination of multi direction torsion present in ALL v platforms.
How is efficiency related to where in the crankshaft's angular turning that it gets torque? Why, for example, do you think that a V4 less is less efficient than an inline 4, assuming the bore and stroke are identical?
@@jason.arthur.taylor in a v4 platform you still have 2 different banks pushing in 2 different trajectories... I'm not saying that an inline 6 if going to burn less fuel than a 4 banger... apples to apples, I would take an inline 4 over a v4 any day. An inline will always be more efficient.
@@ryanrich9186 "in a v4 platform you still have 2 different banks pushing in 2 different trajectories" Ummm. Isn't torque torque? Since when does torque care about the angle? Are you saying you need less of a flywheel? I think the opposite could be true.

Would be neat to also include the idea of the 5 cylinder engine, that there is a power stroke on each revolution, since all modern engines are 4 stroke.
How different is the 2.5L I-5 used by VW in the 2000s&2010s? I was familiar with the Audi I-5 rally engines, so when i looked under the hood of the passat owned by my GF at the time(now wife) I was surprised to see too many intake channels lol.
Case and point, look at every generation of vw rabbit, jetta, quantum, passat, fox or whathaveyou, and you'll see a modding prowess with a community developing it continuously further, base model or higher trim.
been watching you on tiktok for about a year or so, always enjoyed your informative videos (albeit in a short format). Glad to have found you on youtube, where you can really put to display your car wisdom.
A little bit of correction needs to be said. The Pikes Peak gravel all time record is made by Rod Millen driving a 3S-GTE Celica, with a 10:04.06 time.
The Audi 5 cylinder And vw vr6 engines are just monsters engines when modified and the sound the make🤤🤤
Stage 2 daza engines are pretty lethal
Just bought a unitronic stage 2 2019 TT RS. Best daily I could ask for. Fast, good looking, fuel efficient, practical, and most importantly feels special from start to finish. The DAZA is a huge part of that
This engine is just pure Gold, and the video is nicely put together!
Thanks for the video man, as a fan of the i5 it was nice to see its generational advance and all the mad launches of each engine.
The blue RS2 did things to my soul, as im sure it did to yours, hence why its probably in the video. I owe that moment of sheer childish pleasure of the little sideways step it did to you my man. Great video.
Not even mad with the ad. I’m happy to see the growth. I love it
It should also be mentioned that between the quattro and the TTRS, the general head and block design was utilized to make ferrari 10 cylinder motors. This helped refine the head design to modern day standards and personally I feel those improvements are what made the TTRS such an amazing motor.
I think you meant Lamborghini not Ferrari
Ferrari doesn't use any 10 cylinders. 8 or 12.
Love my 5 cylinder. I’ve spent a decent amount of time driving an S3, and let me tell you, that I5 really is a game changer.
S3 isn't an i5...
@@east_coast_s4554 lmao 🤣😂...... OP is a dork...
@@east_coast_s4554 Correct. I have an RS3 but like I said I’ve spent a lot of time driving an S3. It’s definitely worth the jump in price just for the engine alone.
Audi 5 pots are hands down the best engines ever made
I had a Chevy Colorado with an I-5. It was fun to drive. (I know the video is about Audi)
I just bought an '87 turbo quattro with 155k miles. Single owner, garage dweller, straight and clean. It's my first Audi. Hopefully it will fare better than my last two projects. They were both annihilated in random collisions on public roads with inattentive drivers.
I'm a Volvo nut
fully tuned 05 S60R 6MT with a big turbo pushing 500 crank
and a 95 850 T-5R Manual swapped with a tune
love my 5 cylinders
Should have mentioned the AAT/AEL 2.5l TDI engine blocks. People convert them to petrol and swap in an AAN head. Its a stronger block and can make more power.
I don’t need music driving to work in my RS3 because of the I5😍
Ive owned a 2016rs3 for a month now. (with the iron block and only DI)
It sounds like heaven
Wake up dad new 337 speed dropped!!!!
This is great♥️
I owned a 1994 UrS4. I will never get fed up of hearing 5 cylinders singing away!
Only car I had that never ran out of breath. Pulled to redline.
Audi always had the best AWD system but never the motor until about 2006. From early 2006 Audi started present strong, reliable and tested performance motors. Coupled with their already proved AWD system, perfect machine.
Never the motor?? ABA, ABF, VR6, KR, 20VT, 5cylinder and many more there wasn't good?all before 2000.
What I love about motorsports.
Every manufacturer has a model with unique characteristics, sound and performance.
Group A, B & N...antilag popping turbo flutter
All the way to the N/A LFA, which is an absolute eargasm to any gearhead.
2.5 R5 20v (EA855) is Volkswagens 2.5L inline 5 used in BGP/BGQ/BPR/BPS: Volkswagen Jetta (2005-2007), Volkswagen New Beetle (2006-2011), Volkswagen Rabbit (Golf Mk5) (2006-2007).
CBT/CBU: Volkswagen Beetle (A5) (2012-2014), Volkswagen Golf Mk6 (2010-2014), Volkswagen Jetta (2008-2013), Volkswagen Passat (2012-2014), in the middle east in Volkswagen Passat (till date), Volkswagen Rabbit (2008-2009). Used in EA855)
This engine was only used in the North American, South American, and is being used in Middle Eastern markets, as the replacement for the inline-four naturally aspirated 2.0-litre 8v. This engine was replaced by the GEN3 EA888 I4 in North America.
The code for the engine 07K 7:07 this ttrs is just an Oem turbo charged version of the 07k
Can we see one about the FA20DIT from Subaru? Would love to see how these relatively new engines compare to others of it's class. Great vids btw, keep them coming
Have 2012 Golf & 2010 VWJetta Sportwagen, both 5 cylinder & a pleasure to drive.
Tap the GO pedal & off we go!
Love to see Audi 2.7t and 1.8t also
I want this motor in my life asap 😂
Order a 2023 RS3 and cant wait to play with the inline 5 engine in it.
That's nuts how spectators lined both sides of the rally track back then.
Fun fact - The S2 turbo and manifold parts fit on the VW ABF 16v engine (possibly the Audi 9A too).
Remove the fifth banks, blank them off and bolt th straight on.
thanks for the inspiration.. got my 92 s4 buttoned up this weekend thanks to your vid!
I am absolutely hooked on your videos. The research, information, and graphics all combine to make exceptional presentations. Keep up the fantastic work!
Working on my 87 5000 S Quattro over the summer and switching to EFI this spring. Everyone keeps telling me to sell it but I don't see myself ever selling this old girl. Not for a loooonnngggg time.
15psi boost from the factory. The mad lads
I drive an RS3 and absolutely love it every single day. Never gets old. The motor is just unbelievable.
would like to make a few corrections here.
Fantastic video and fun to see Hank and Brian's cars showcased.
Lovvvve my Rs3 with Ims850, she sounds soooo nasty. The BT really opens the 5cyl sounds. Great video!
I absolutely love your videos! The way you present the info and the video clips and cadence of everything makes them very entertaining!
I know vw/porsche are nuts from driving my 300hp r36 vr6 it pulls with turbos and supercharged euros just fine n/a!! The vw vr6 is truly a proven motor in the drags as well even more so than the daza..with a lil more displacement.
PLEASE do a video on the AMG 2.0 Turbo! Keep it up!!!
Viper V10, Porche Flat Six, Audi inline 5... take your pick.
Since i owned my 8V RS3 i wouldn’t ever want to miss it again, but boy is it thirsty …
You're hella on the come up bro! Keep going.
Back than when cars where truly cool and really creative.
So you esentially get half of a turbocharged Lambo Engine nowerdays packed into a small affordable sportscar. That's crazy cool 😁👍🏼
Was hoping you'd do a breakdown of the Audi inline 5. Great stuff 👌
My question is how does a Volkswagon designed Audi Turbo i5 engine compare to a similar application Turbo V6 from VW, BMW, Merc, and Honda-Acura?
I know I love my "FBO" 1.8T B5.5 A4 and my 2.0T B8.5 A4 that only has a few tweaks. The turbo I5 are pretty wild engines... Maybe one I'll get one. But I just can't see paying the steep prices for the TTrs or the S3!
S3 isn't i5
@@east_coast_s4554 it's was the RS3 I was thinking about...
The AAN cam sensor was located behind the timing gear on intake side. Other than that spot on.
Would be neat to also include the idea of the 5 cylinder engine, that there is a power stroke on each revolution, since all modern engines are 4 stroke.
The music hits so hard with the narration
Feels like being in goldeneye or something lol
I’ve followed this account for forever (idk if I was actually subbed) since the wagon vid days, crazy to see it blow up like this
Just picked up a 2021 TTRS. ❤️ the sound of that five cylinder.
How different is the 2.5L I-5 used by VW in the 2000s&2010s?
I was familiar with the Audi I-5 rally engines, so when i looked under the hood of the passat owned by my GF at the time(now wife) I was surprised to see too many intake channels lol.
By my quick google search, I can find the CBU engine(that i think her car has) has pretty much all the same specs as the EA855 used in the TTRS, with the big difference being the turbo.
Is the only difference between these a turbo, tune and (maybe) cams?
Awesome vid, just a little bit about @2:22, The turbos weren't water cooled until 1987, for the 1988 model year.
I would love to see you cover the 3.0t engines they make they make decent power with some mods
I took my fully modded Kia stinger to the track and new Audi with the plate that said Diablo on it. I’m like my chance to take out a Audi and gains some brownie points🤣 well I beat him off the line and ran a 11.4 at 120mph
He ran a 10.3 at 133mph 👀 well Jesus lord 💪👀💯🔥😭 they are no joke he had e85 every bolt on and tune
I love my RS3 so fun and exciting never fails to put a smile on my face
Next level production and explanation!
is there any additional footage of the white TT 7:36 floating around? so good
