Bro you Rock . I’m 47 year old guy who is recovering from congestive heart failure and been going through a mid life crisis well not that bad but while home from work on my recovery I got back into RC cars , I bought a Powell Peralta Skateboard and feverishly been researching retro bmx and freestyle bikes . Looking for a Nice Haro master and boom i stumble onto this video and you opened my eyes to building a nice 26 inch bmx cruiser in the meantime . I never thought of this and if I know myself I will have about 3 built in the next two months 😂 keep up the awesome videos .
I'm glad I could inspire you!! Have a speedy recovery!!
Hope you are on the mend! How did you do on the bike builds?
Very nice.
Any update on your health?
Same age, also heart disease, same hobbies, 3 haro masters, stay rad
The bike turned out awesome and the way you filmed/edited the video made it enjoyable to watch all the way through.
Glad you enjoyed it!
same here...nice...keep it up 👍😎
Yup!!! No stupid music just the meat and potatoes! Good video !
DAMN BRO, WHAT YOU SAID ABOUT HAVING THE GT BARS, STEM, FORKS, AND OTHER PARTS YOU WISHED FOR AS A KID MADE ME SHED A TEAR AS I COULDN'T AFFORD THOSE ITEMS AS WELL, EITHER WAY I MADE MYSELF A MANS BMX BIKE BY ADDING OLD STINGRAY VBARS ON MY MTB AND MOST DAYS I STILL FEEL LIKE A KID RIDING MY OLD BMX BIKE THAT TOOK ME EVERYWHERE. GOOD SHOW, BRO.
hmmm, I painted the letters BMX on my 3 speed that I spray painted black when i was 12. tried to put some custom parts on it. im 54, still geeked on bikes, and still broke. must be a connection
Since seeing your video I’ve built three of these bmx cruisers with old 26” mtbs. 94 GT Timberline, 95 GT Tempest, and a 92 Trek 800. I love them all! I’ve kept the 7 speed cassettes on them though. Thanks for the inspiration.
That's awesome! Thank you!!!
Apart from cool, what are your reasons for turning them into bmx ? Have they become more comfortable (maybe due to more upright position ) and manouverable ?
Nice, I just recently bought a MTB, and already changing stuff out, feel like the late 70’s early 80’s all over again
10/10. You nailed every aspect of the build. Small aluminum frame perfect for Bmx retro look and feel.
Great build. I love the single speed tension arm. Seat up for me, old school style
Wow! As an 80's Alumni Person Myself. My Heart still Flutters anytime I see BMX build videos. And This one just been added to My collection.Much appreciation for Your decision for The BMX/Mountain Bike transformation.Nice Work indeed.😎👍🏾
I have a Trek 850 from the late 80s early 90s was never as much fun as my old GT BMX bike. Thanks. I definitely going to try this !
Hello. Thanks for the video.
Actually I do the same "project" like yours. I use old cro-mo MTB frame and many stuffs from my old bike. Generally I Followed the principal "no waste". So used one cog from my old casette. I made from plastic pipe the spacer sleeves. I used old crank (actually I had to rebuit these old one because it wasn't the screws to keep chainring). New chainring. Instead of new Single Speed Tension arm i used old rear derailleur. Cost about 40$. I used this bike to cycling with my 6 years old son on the city pavement - it works perfect.
Why do you need a chain tensioner to begin with? I have a 26” Redline BMX bike, and it has no tensioner.
@@reddsshaker3477 Because the MTB frame has no way to tension the chain by moving the rear wheel.
nice build I did a MTBMX conversion on an old stumpjumper but I keep it a 1x7 to help out my knees on hills
Great Video, Loved it with the seat up. I'm not a purest, I think you should make your bike the way you want. Variety is the spice of life.
one thing i learned from working alongside a BMX maniac is that the spoke tension should be near the limit, after copious tri-flow into the spoke/nipple/rim interface. tight tight wheels make for happy BMXers
Loved how he broke a beautiful riding machine down AND CREATED a 2 wheel work of art . . GREAT WORK ...
My 26" BMX lose parts build is a GT Avalanche. I always wanted a triple triangle GT but had no reason to have one since stiff was not something I wanted of a hardtail mtb. A BMX build it worked perfectly for.
Very cool I have a 93 Stump Jumper and its going BMX ! Thank you so much for the inspiration.
I built an old GT Team Avalanche from the frame up 30 years ago. Can’t part with the bike and it’s old MTB tech, but you may have inspired me to change it to bmx.
Decent conversion💯 love it,I converted a jamis boss beach cruiser 7 speed into a fast ripper replica, love these kind of builds
my buddy gave me his 2010 Specialized Hardrock. I'm looking to do this conversion. Great video!
(I’m 59 years young) Looks pretty f’n awesome!!! I’ve made more than a few of these and always end up selling them! Not that I wanted to sell, just people love paying outrageous prices for something they can do themselves. Anyway the only thing I would have done different is the tires as I’m partial to Maxxis Hookworms. 😎👍
I love this! I picked up an old Diamondback Outlook to do something just like this.
I like it, the new fork is really so much better.
I built a gt 24 inch up but used landing gear and all genuine mid school gt parts, do the builds have many similarities, however I’m only 5-9 and going bigger than 24 inch wheels makes the bike less like a bmx and more like an old beach cruiser in feel. I’ve been doing smash up builds for years I’m glad I’m not the only one
It’s perfect. 🙌 Now you need to make a ramp out of scrap boards and cinder blocks in the middle of the street, and jump it!
......with no helmet!!
That is sweet! You didnt compromise the frame nor the purpose of the geometry thats intended for that frame. It can take on trails or the street. BMX tricks and MTB trails in one. Definitely a very cool custom style!
I think it turned out great! Good editing as well...
Great mod, I hang a backpack off the cross bar when I go shopping.
That is super cool. Bmx guy here. Was gifted a Trek 3700 and want to do something like this. Very inspirational
It's cool! I like it better with the seat down
I like it. Chrome and polished aluminum always look best on bikes with shades or color. Good job.
Looks wise, I like it better down. Usability wise, it has to be up, especially with general cruising!
Absolutely love this build and it is just what my youngest daughter wants. Inspired.
So cool - love it! I just stripped my too small for me '93 Stumpjumper M2 of all its later XT M739 parts and listed it to sell. This may change my mind as the bike has huge sentimental value having owned it since '93 but easier to let go after acquiring a '92 S-Works M2 Duralcan. Hmm... decisions decisions.
With an early 29'r unicrown fork, that bike is a perfect example of BMX/Street punk bike! Jus need the Van's tires to go with the grips. Annnnnnd, BMX pads!!!
My current BMX is an RSD Middlechild. Pithy, punkass bike! Love the transformation of the Ole Special Ed. That repurposed the bike to be a fun factory so you can have those "Calgon, take me away" rides in the neighborhood. Would be a blast on singletrack, as well. Well done bike build by Dad's workshop, Inc.!!!
Beautiful build! I too lusted after Landing Gear forks as a kid but could never afford them. I may just follow your lead here and piece together my own big boy BMX. Cheers from Hawaii!
I have a 26" 08 GT timberline i turned into a BMX i still need to buy the ridged fork but it's so much nicer to ride now easier on my back and I'm like you i grew up in the 70s and 80s riding BMX bikes as a kid.
Love it I too grew up in the 70s and 80s and miss my old BMX bike
I love it. I raced BMX and did freestyle in the 80's. Now i have to build a mtb/ bmx bike.
This is so sick. Im doing something similar with an old walmart 26" mtb. Thanks for the ideas on parts
That's pretty darn cool. I've got a 2000 hard rock I'm looking into changing. Just trying to figure out what I want to do with it.
Love the video and love the bike! I found this video by looking for ideas for a cruiser conversion I was thinking about doing on an old Gary Fisher Wahoo that I found for free on Craigslist. I'm 56 and I grew up riding/racing BMX bikes, as well! I'm finding a lot of inspiration from your build and can't wait to get started on my own. I appreciate the product links and hope my project turns out as good as yours! Liking and subscribing. Thanks much!
The old forks are air forks. There’s these plastic caps on top of each stanchion which you can remove. Then you need a air needle, the same kind you’d use for a football. It will probably not hold air for a long time, but the mag 21 was a decent suspension fork back then, so probably worth trying.😀😀
nice build though👌
Thanks for the tip! I was wondering how to add air to those forks. There's hardly any info on them online.
@@DePuesshop I have a 94 Stumpjumper with Specialized FS forks. I have a little pump that looks like a syringe with a ball pump needle on the end and it has a PSI gauge on it. Ive had the bike and the air pump since 94 and they both still work perfectly.
Sweet! Love the creative upcycling of an old mtb frame. Inspiring me to do a similar build.
I did the same to my 26" old mountain bike but i did add a mid-drive motor to it but i must say yours looks way better 👏🏽😊
That's a super light frame, so would be a fun around town rider. Great idea.
You're right. The frame is very light, but the 3 pound steel fork made this bike weigh 25.8 lbs. Haha!
@@DePuesshopthat's still pretty light weight in the grand scheme of things.
love it i been looking for cheap old mtb to do the same
Stem and forks go perfect with the bike ! Good job !
I've been planning on doing the same thing to a 26" Diamond Back frame that has a really short standover height like most 20" BMX bikes have. Thanks to your sweet video, I have a much better idea how to go about it. That chain tensioner was a major problem solver. I might go with a laid back seat post on my build. Thanks man. Great video.
Nice
I have a ‘96 Cannondale ‘small’ MTB with the fat tube aluminum frame. I’m going to convert it to BMX. Question…..why would we a chain tensioner? I have a 26” Redline SQB26 BMX bike that doesn’t have a tensioner, and if rides awesome.
@@reddsshaker3477 MTBs have different dropouts than BMX bikes. Therefore, pulling the rear wheel back to tighten the chain might be tricky with those shorter MTB dropouts, but I think maybe it still could be done with the correct chain length. A chain tensioner just seems like an easier way to go about it once the rear derailleur is removed.
The drop outs on a mountain bike form the 90s are vertical and have no adjustment to make the chain tighter.
I second the laid back seat post.
Just a couple of thoughts on setup. Your seatpost should be much shorter--on bumps that seat is going to kick you off of the bike. Drop it waaaay down and cut off the excess for weight. Also, bars should be 90 degrees to the ground or match the rake of the forks--this will keep you from going over the bars. The single speed regulator I can understand, but better to mod the forks for rear dropouts and run a proper chain length. The BMX cruiser is not a beach cruiser--it is meant to race. It looks like you have the same size tires front and back--a better choice is a slightly smaller width in back because if you get more traction in the rear on dirt, the front end will wash out. BMX bikes are the easiest bikes to break your collar bones or separate your shoulders. Ask me how I know.
The great thing about a custom bike build is that you can make it exactly the way you want it.....and then you can change it and modify it as much as you want in the future. Bicycles, for me, enable creativity.
How do u know?
I think that it turned out pretty nice!
Awesome dream build that I bet It will keep a smile on face forever . As with a background in Bmx's and Dirt Jumpers there would be few changes that I would apply and maybe will make the build even cooler : A dartmoor reel pro v.2 singlespeed rear hub , some modern doublewall rims for example Ns bikes or Dartmoor (there are plenty to choose from) and also some bmx cranks people use on Dirt Jumpers . If the wheel build would be a pass than there is a wethepeople patrol sprocket with 33 teeth that would direct mount on bmx cranks and would keep the gear ratio pretty good with the single speed conversion. Also for seat there are few fat pivotal seats that would make the bike look even better . Only my humble opinion .
The great thing about a custom build is that it never has to be done, and you can keep changing things up until it's just right. Thank you for the ideas, and thanks for watching!
Great video, thank you! I'm going to look into doing something similar with my '93 Rockhopper. Been laid up in the garage for years n years after I got my 29r, just couldn't part with it. Excited to see new adventures with it!🤘
could rock the layback seat post
Thats really cool, should feel even better with bars inline with forks
Elvi moves cracked me up 😂
What a cool build, nice job man
Cool build, well done !
Love the idea of a 26" BMX. I'd probably have gone with a Magura HS33 rear brake for the hell of it but I get that there's a budget. Great bike.
I suspect he flips these. If it were a keeper, I agree!
I have a 26” Redline SQB26 BMX bike. It’s absolutely killer. Check ‘em out. Btw….I’m 56, 200 lbs, and 6’ foot tall. For comparison.
@@reddsshaker3477 can you do tricks on it?
@@rodolfoo3015tricks would be limited with no pegs. 24" wheels is kind of the max wheel size for decent freestyle.
@@LemonySnicket-EUC i have an old mtb, i see people on fix gears and mtbs hitting the skate park they jump over rails and boxes. I bought some pegs to install on the bike, gonna try hitting the park. I have a modern mtb and an bmx too but i would like to have something that i dont care to scratch and more confortable since i am 6ft and a bit fat.
Love that! I’ve been wanting to do the same to my old ‘96 Bontrager. Thanks for this great video!
That was very interesting. I love your tyre fitting technique. I’ll have to try that! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Thanks
Makes me want to do the same thing to my old stumpjumper cuz it just looks fun to ride
Been wanting to try this for a bit, but just with a longer top tubed frame. Great work
I link it. Don't think you needed to do a gear delete. Would be cool with an SE Blitz seat.
Excellent work, I want to do this to my Orbea 29" hardtail.
I've got an old Rockhopper that I'm gonna do up the same.
Very nice. It looks a lot like a Specialized P26 Dirt Jumper with a different fork. The rise on the bars of the P26 is about 3". So, your bars are taller.
I did the same thing to a 24" wheel MTB that was discarded. As an aged sixty-something person I feel a bit embarrassed riding around on it, but now I see it's a "thing"! Perhaps people are looking at me and thinking, hey, I want one of those!
Yes, keep riding! Everyone our age used to ride them in the past, and there's nothing wrong with riding them today. It's all about having fun on 2 wheels anyway you like!.
I really like this build a whole lot ! I have this exact bike except mine might be one size smaller than yours. I got it for a lady some years ago and she asked me if I wanted it back because she cant ride it anymore because her bones are fragile and she is afraid of falling. Its in practically new condition still.. Its too small for me as a mountain bike but I measured my Redline cruiser and its actually pretty close in frame height and just a little bit shorter top tube length. Last time I raced was 24 years ago in the 36-40 cruiser class. Back then I thought about modifying and racing on a 26" wheel bike. Im 62 now and after seeing this I started measuring that Stumpjumper thinking that it sure would be fun to get back to the track and try not to kill myself again. After seeing your video and seeing your bike I think that I could do this with this bike and just install a longer stem to make up for the shorter top tube. Great Video ! Thanks !
Oh yeah. I like the conversion.
Also I always wanted to do this one stumpjumper but a 20 inch kids bike
layback seatpost is a suggestion killer build keepem coming...
This is crazy, i was literally just thinking about doing this to my bmx bike, i think i may attempt to start it today
the pieces are all there in front of us but putting them in the right order is another thing , this is a great thing , well done that man ,,,,,,, even i could do that now that i am going to use de pues brain .
Love it...! I'm about to do something similar to my Trek 29'er...! Thanks for the video...!
Awesome! I've been wanting to try this exact sort of handlebar/frame geometry pairing for a while now. Looks great.
Please do !
Love it. I've had a very similar backburner project in mind for a while.
Sweet vid ! sweet build ! Inspired me to re build and customize my old Raleigh Burner !
I have just bought a 1999 GT Tequesta medium frame bike and have given it a similar treatment, still waiting to fit a rigid fork as it has some super heavy RS Judy C's. It is quite a heavy bike right now but it rides very nice. However I am keeping the gears on the back as I live in a hilly place where gears are necessary . I am on a tight budget so I am upgrading as and when I have money to so, but it is at least rideable.
I think the new term for a mountain bike with bmx bars is a "Standie"
Pretty cool! I would have chosen a fork that would allow for a front brake. That would be breaking with the BMX tradition, but would better on down hills and a versatile bike.
"That would be breaking with the BMX tradition"
No, it wouldn't. BMXs not having a front brake, or worse, no brake at all, is a relatively recent fad. In the '80s and most, if not all, of the '90s, nearly all freestyle BMXs had front and rear brakes. Even many race-oriented BMXs came with front brakes from the factory at least up until the mid 1980s. Look at a 1985 Mongoose catalog for example. The Eric Rupe Signature Edition Pro Class, Pro Class 24, Californian, Expert, and Minigoose all come with front and rear brakes, and they are all race-oriented. Only the entry-level M1 and M1 Mini are missing the front brake.
Im sure this bloke has plenty other 2 braked, do everything bikes.
@@MaximRecoil Last time I raced bmx front brakes weren't allowed. That was 24 years ago though.
Looks great. And the editing is really nice and gives a very realistic vibe. The only think I noticed is that frame seems to be a little short imo. Otherwise, perfect.
There are a lot of 24" retro frames too. Would probably scale well.
Bad ass i love it .im doing it to a gary fisher.i had the same vision for it.
That bike can cruise and hit some jumps
That looks so fun! Cool build, I see super small frames time to time that would be perfect for this type build!
I bought a 26" bmx a year ago. didnt want to drop a lot of $$ since I hadnt ridden in decades. I bought a low end bike this might have been a better idea pick up a better quality MB off craigslist or a garage sale then convert it
Awesome build
Well done! Repurpose that old timer and keep on playing bikes!!
What a good idea for bigger and / or older guys love to ride bmx, but they are too small (for me, anyways). I never liked to ride mountain bikes, but they were bigger fames
Looks awesome
Sweet Bike, what A Great Idea.
Found your channel by accident....I see👀you are DROPPING BOMBS💣💣💣on them✊💯😎!!!
Thank you very much!
love it man!!!! I've got a specialized that o want to do the same thing . thanks for the awesome inspiration
This inspired me to do some bmx-mtb hybrid with my old steel 26
50 years old dad pulls out Vans grips : "I thought it will look cool"
20 years old totally cool me : WTF they even exist?
Always raced my 20" and 24" BMX bikes with the seat down for clearing jumps better.
Ah I have this frame. Now I have goals for it 🎉
That's awesome 👍 great job
turned out great!
Thats sick! I love the tensioner
I’ve got a ‘small’ ‘96 Cannondale MTB waaaaaaaay past due for a BMX conversion.
Love it. Keep the Legends alive.
looks great, i have a klein comp pulse that i was thinking about doing the same with.
