It can only work on bikes that have equal thickness chainring, for bikes like mine that had a staggered thickness front chainring I unfortunately just had to eat the extra slack and go through about 4 different sized front chainrings until I found one that would allow little enough slack to not fly off the front ring!

Great idea. If possible, use a pin for a wider chain. For example if you're using a 10 speed chain (which is what I always do when the 10 speed chains are worn to .75 on my road or mountain bike, they are re-used on my single speed) then I will use a pin from an 8 or 9 speed chain to join. It's okay that the ends of the pin sit wider than the chain because it's a single speed the wider pin won't interfere with other gears or shifting. This creates a stronger connection and you can see and feel where the chain was joined easily.
I bought an older 18 speed steel mtb frame because it had horizontal dropouts and no derailleur hanger; looked like it was made for single speed conversion; fitted 33t chainwheel and 18t sprocket; great for trails or shop trips

Been thinking about converting my aggressive hard tail to single speed, it’s been on my mind why people haven’t tried using half link chains instead of chain tensioners, so good job. Just need to see if I can keep up with my mates on the trails with one gear. I spent 20 years riding Bmx so love the idea of the simple single speed
I just built up a Dartmoor Primal single speed, absolutely loving it. Only thing is that with a push down tensioner the chain skips when Im torquing it hard on a steep bit. Can't go with a halflink because of narrowwide chainring, but I'm going to try using the tensioner pushing the chain up instead of down.
Good show! I'm having that problem trying to convert an old MTB to one with an Enviolo hub. The frame has vertical dropouts, and now I see how this can be fixed. Very good.
That is the set up of my MTB ever since... I always using my bike riding it around the city, thats why I dont need any shifters, gears, rd etc... Basic single speed thats enough
I just bought a haro mountain bike with gears and coming from bmx I don't like the idea of making things easier by changing gears, kind of want to attempt this conversion. I want something that will feel normal on flat roads and give me a little challenge on incline like my bmx bike did for a good workout.
As a single speed, if your chain line between the front and rear cog is straight, and you have decent chain tension, you can just use a cheaper/outdated regular chainring. No need for narrow wide.
This is awesome. This is my first time doing this to an Old 10 Speed Ross Aka Bomber bike And I'm glad I ain't alone on this. Great video glad I watched this before doing anything else.
im in the process of converting my 26 inch full suspension mountain bike to a single speed 20 inch full suspension stunt bike for street riding thanks for the help
This will work..... Until your chain starts to naturally stretch out. I'd rather go with a tensioner than switch out my chain or have to shrink my chain all the time. Sick bike though
Why is it at 3:24 he is easily tightening the bolts onto the sprocket but when I try tighten the bolt sweep things can’t tighten it because it just keeps spinning
I’m having trouble with my conversion I’ve tried 18-17-16t back cogs and I have a 32t front chain ring and it constantly skips the cog what am I missing
@@DanyoSports I guess that could work. I ride strictly fixed mostly off road on trails so I have all track drops on my bikes with micro chain adjuster on each bike to get the best tension. I like your method for getting newbies into single speeding without having to buy a new frame.
If your crank or cog is old then its time to change it, when the teeth are thin it can't handle the stress it will skip, Im no expert this is base on my experience. Stay safe
@@DanyoSports Makes sense, thank you, I will keep trying to put the derailleur even though it doesn't work properly, if I won't manage it seems that I will also have to buy a normal round ring.
I also have vertical dropout, and now use a derailleur as a tensioner. But your idea seems better to me. So you combine 1 / 2x1 / 8 + 1 / 2x3 / 32. Right?
Hey man I have a 16t back and 32t front chain ring I cant seem to get the proper tension if I remove half chain it's too tight if I add its kinda loose what should I do?
Yes, you can remove it, but I believe the hanger helps to strengthen the dropout, so it would be best to leave it on or find another piece to fill the spot.

Half links stretch like crazy...
Try dmr tensioner in push up mode, only works with 3/32 chain tho

You know, this works perfectly on the trail as well, a little hard to push climbing but on flats and downhill is awesome

your videos are awesome! all of them :)
Bro just invented half link chain!!!
A halflink chain would've been the easiest solution
They make halflink masters too.
I like the idea of no tensioner, they spoil the simplicity of a single speed to some extent.
solved my problem. thanks for your tutorial men it helps me a lot.
id like to see how its done with a tensioner
Espectacular video.... Me pase tiempo buscando algo asi....
Just zoned out and got jump scared at the drop damn this track is lit
Don’t try with a narrow wide chainring. Has to be even number of links of course 😉
That’s true, you got it 👍

Bike bulders love Singlespeed bikes. Bike riders hate them
Great build!
Doesn’t having no chain tensioner create the problem that the chain becomes stretched in use and then falls off?
Seems like chain pin would not be long enough for link added to outside of outside link
Great instructional video!!!!
Can you make a single sprocket and 3 front chain rings.
Dang I just enjoyed being put into a trance while learning how to make my bike a single speed.
If you want to use a MTB wheel on a single speed frame, can you do it without the hub? Thanks
Do you know how to put 2 single sprackets? One for cycling and one for ebike?
@danyosports dose your chain skip teeth at alll i have a tensioner on mine but it keeps skipping when load in put on the drive train
the chain link sketcy AF and still too loose..... maybe a bigger chainring?
Belle job!
Isn't it cool how a person's bike is a reflection of who they are? Every cyclist has their own touches on their bike.

Why is it at 3:24 he is easily tightening the bolts onto the sprocket but when I try tighten the bolt sweep things can’t tighten it because it just keeps spinning
You need like a flat head screwdriver to hold the nut from behind and then tighten it
having to do this cause of a broken derailer that i can not replace at a reasonable price
Thanks this helps a lot 🙏🏻
So we don't have to change the hub?
I would have just used a halflink master or full chain.
Thanks for the tip
Hi...did you use 2 different chain sizes? singlespeed with multiple speed chain.
Hi, yes, I used 2 different chains, singlespeed (1/8”) and 9 speed (3/32”).
Why would you convert it ?
He carry the whole city on his back I mean bike.
Can you make it fixed gear?
Can I do it on full sus or do I need a tenchener
I’m having trouble with my conversion I’ve tried 18-17-16t back cogs and I have a 32t front chain ring and it constantly skips the cog what am I missing
18t cogs need 38-42 chainring
Great idea with that added link from a 1/8" chain, but after the chain stretches [and it will], then what?
If the chain stretches to the point where you can eliminate the added link, remove it. If not, keep riding it.
@@DanyoSports I guess that could work. I ride strictly fixed mostly off road on trails so I have all track drops on my bikes with micro chain adjuster on each bike to get the best tension. I like your method for getting newbies into single speeding without having to buy a new frame.

dont need tesioner unless its using 10 speed. little gears are smaller but reular bike sprocket is a lot taller and will not slip.
What you going to do when your chain stretches
I would remove a link (half link) and see if it’ll fit.

Get a chain tensioner.

33 X 18 ??
That would be better with a bigger crank ring

Sure, but the half link won’t work on the narrow wide chainring.

Hi, try to squeeze it in without the half link, remember the tolerance is 0.5”.

Coulda just shortened chain to whatever cog on cassette you like
Is it possible to convert to SS just by changing the sprocket?
Yes, it’s possible.
Do you need to leave the hangar on in order to get the axle back or is it possible to remove it for a sleeker look ?
Yes, you can remove it, but I believe the hanger helps to strengthen the dropout, so it would be best to leave it on or find another piece to fill the spot.
can i use a regular 7-9 speed chain with this or does it have to be a single speed?
Yes, you can use a regular chain.
