А good cleaning and conditioning would have yielded far better results imo. Putting new leather should be the very last resort in restoring a seat. It is never the same quality nor the same look. This one in particular is wrinkled af and it's sagging way to much around the corners. Such a shame, the OEM leather looked mint...

Amazing job! I have done this. Prior installing the leathers, I used a clothes steamer on the foam. Just press the steamer directly on the foam and it expands the foam back to factory shape and removes all odors. Thanks for sharing.

  • @domen6323
    @domen6323 3 года назад +20

Next time use a steam machine on the foam before assembling so the foam stretches back to its original size, the end result is much better and the seats are softer in the end. Also steam the leadher in the end so it shrinks a little and its more stretched or put a wet rag over seats and use a heat gun or an iron.

Like most, I think the old seats would have come up beautifully, that said if you are looking for "as new" then that is personal choice and the work and cost is saveable. What you want to do is take it apart again, use a heat gun to warm the leather and stretch it considerably more before "piercing" it on those metal tangs, like 20% more. As it is the seats will look terrible after a couple of weeks use. The covers you used seems like a quality product, just installed badly. Really put some muscle into it and stretch it tight and you will get what you are looking for, its an art and a lot of work, but you can get there by re working it.

My car is a 1988 BMW 750il and uses TEN of these motors. The computer utilizes temperature sensors and motors to open and close plastic doors to mix the interior air. One of the first automatic temperature control systems to utilize such a system to manage temperatures.

First of all, I really like Your channel and no hate at all.
But to replace all leather parts was wrong. That oem lether was so good and in good condition. Just needed to clean it with some leather cleaner foam and brush (not steamer) to get that kinnda "new leather" matt look.
These seats with oem lether has much more value. Even the leather would be with cracks, it possible to restore it. There are special lether glue, filler, paint, balm and all the stuff to fix all the defects.
(But anywau, love Your channel and Your Bmw. Sorry bout my english, its not so perfect)

FYI if you run a steam cleaner over the new leather it will help shrink it down over the frame and get rid of the wrinkles.

IMO the old leather used in BMW is way better in quality. You can see in this example that the old leather just needs professional to clean it, maybe repaint it where necessary, oil it, put varnish and that it. I've done this with e30 and e90 leater seats, the result is great and time consuming (30 days to clean, brush, sand, paint, oil and varnish it; leather need time to soak it up), but oem is oem.

Back when these cars were made, BMW and Mercedes were essentially low volume car manufacturers and handmade craftsmanship was how they operated their business. The E30s, E31s, E32s and E34s were among the last of the handcrafted BMW's. When BMW decided to become a volume car manufacturer, it cost them less to build cars but the build quality nosedived.

IMO, what you've had initially looked much better than the end result.
The original seat looked like a moderately worn part from an old, but quality made car. The replacement looks like a seat from a brand new el-cheapo Chinese vehicle.
But you may disregard my opinion completely as I absolutely despise 99.9% of all re-upholstery jobs and would prefer a worn original seat above any.

I winched when he put those new covers over old foam. That just broke my heart. That poor car.

It was worth cleaning the foam pillows too. They are usually really filthy.

Looks great mate but I wish you went for thicker material like the originals.
Not sure how long this will last in comparison.
Just so happy to see such an original build
Also I think your OCD would have made you refurb the corrosion on some of the parts and I know this hold was time sensitive

I wonder if these were hand built when they were being made I’m pretty sure but must’ve been cool..

A leather interior in a 1982 Toyota Starlet. I would LOVE to see that! Seriously. I am not ridiculing you or insulting you. I think that would be positively awesome to see something the OEM didn't even think of nearly forty years ago,
