Episode 45
Uncle Fester's Quest : The Addams Family is well known for its difficulty. One wrong move, and it's back to the beginning! If that sounds unappealing, don't worry - with tricks in this video you'll never die!
This game was made by Sunsoft, one of the best developers of games based on licensed properties for the NES. They made Batman, and Gremlins 2, but this game actually came before all of those, and was their first foray into the world of licensing.
So how did Sunsoft lock down the license for such a big property with no prior experience? In today's episode we'll find out, then we'll dive deep into the game play where we'll learn:
* The best way to POWER UP FAST! Don't be stuck with bad weapons, and items!
* Where to find the HEALTH CONTAINER UPGRADES - Max out your health!
* The location of every WEAPON AND ITEM - Where to find everything!
* The SECRET GLITCH that will kill bosses in a single hit!
* Find ALL of the Addams Family members - Morticia, Wednesday, Pugsly, Thing, Mama, and even Gomez!
* MAPS for every building maze - never get lost again!
* How to beat the UFO - You can do it!
* The ultimate strategy for defeating EVERY BOSS, even the ALIEN LEADER... AND MORE!
Thanks for watching!

My aunt died before finishing this game (her favorite, btw) and I've aged quite a bit since then. I want to use your strats to finish this game once and for all in the name of my aunt. I promised her I would if she couldn't. That last boss always ended me while the two bosses before really hurt a lot. I feel confident now. Thanks a lot!
Incredible! Super cool to hear you finished it for her.
You know someone is an expert when they make festers quest look easy! A rare breed indeed!
Your videos are becoming an integral part of my weekends. Really appreciate all your effort!
Thank you!!
Agreed
Ugghhh integrals the other part of my weekend
Ditto Saturday isint Saturday until I get my ucbvg.
Maybe you need a life
Never could beat this one, but DAMN what an amazing soundtrack.
Sunsoft really comes through with the soundtracks. they knew something about using the NES to get some good bass sounds, something it doesn't seem like most other developers ever figured out
ME EITHER
@@UCanBeatVideoGames there's a really good video by explod2A03 talking about the sunsoft bass! the gist is they went about it by using dpcm bass samples instead of the NES's usual square/triangle waves, giving it that deeper and more "punchy" feeling.
Man, Sunsoft was up there with Capcom as far as I'm concerned. One of my favorite developers on the NES.
agreed.
100%!

The Addams Family was popular in reruns and advertising at the time, geared more towards the younger generation. Same reason why the movie ended up getting made, why the original Star Trek got more popular, and why Gilligan's Island became popular again, it was cheap rerun content for TV stations to run.
Agreed. And that's fine. Sometimes things get popular through reruns.
@@SamtheBravesFan it was really a response to the rise in independent TV stations and cable networks that exclusively existed in the 70s and 80s that allowed this to really happen. We saw a mini version of the same thing with the rise of streaming, but the time frame was more condensed. No one back when these shows were being newly produced expected anything like that type of content market to exist.
Exactly. TBS back in the 80's would air reruns of Gilligan's Island and The Addams Family. Which my sister and I watched a lot. My dad was a huge Star Trek fan so we always watched the reruns of that, as well. Reruns really helped those shows gain traction with my generation and resulted in The Addams Family movies and TNG being created.
Your comment about it being a nightmare for color blind people really struck home. I am not color blind, but my parents would only let the nes be hooked up to an old black and white television for awhile. Not sure how I ever reached the 4th boss without knowing if each gun/whip would level me up or down. Later when hooked up to a color television, it was so much more enjoyable.
When I was really young we had an old Radio Shack computer that was essentially just a keyboard that plugged into the TV, and I had to play that on a Black and White TV. One of my only games for it was a Sesame Street color matching game!
My grandparent actually had one of them old timey rotary telephones with the part you hear from separate from the base that was on the table.
My boomer parents bought wholesale into the whole "Vidya games rurnt the teevee!" So we had to sneak to play games in color on "the big tv"
@@EveryDooDarnDiddlyDay and now you can have a big flat screen TV to play them video games.
Same here, but with pressure cooker for the atari 2600. Colors were important in the game and I didn't saw them, lol
A childhood favorite of mine, and still a strong title in my NES library!
Just a note about the story: the aliens abduct the townspeople, not Gomez. Gomez stays at the Addams' house to protect it while Fester and the rest of the fam take on the aliens. That's why he's in that cutscene when you get the 4th health box. The story is in the manual. I can send a link to a site that has scans for most NES manuals if you'd like it.
Also, the dot after you get all the clues reveals the location of the final boss. It isn't really helpful either way, but that's what it's supposed to do.

The NES-obsessed 7 year old in me is incredibly impressed with your skill!
This is one of the hardest NES games, and you explained how to play this so very well.
Really? try yesterday to beat it i get the last boss on the first Try , and finished the game at the second try , the game have a medium difficulty
Every single time I watch your vids I have to pause and grab a beer as I shake my head of how easy you made these games look….. thank you for all the games I could never finish as a kid
$5 for a Hot Dog in 1989, that's one expensive dog
Yeah I was thinking the same thing.. I remember getting hot dogs back in those days for like $1. I guess Festers hot dogs are infused with anabolic muscle candy.
That's like Ball Park quality.
Well, it is a Dirk Diggler Dog.....
@@wingedhussar5528 Yeah. Living in NY I think every vendor had the 2 dogs and a can of soda for $3 deal.
That's around 11 bucks today without tax. Yeesh.
I remember this game fondly. Always enjoyed it myself as a kid. Can't wait to see you tackle Solstice.
I loved Solstice, though I never beat it...
Solstice is insane I just beat it last year the sound track is amazing also Fantastic Adventures of Dizzy not sanctioned but one of the best NES music of all time
If he tackles some Dizzy games it will be epic ✌🙌
Best day of the week when the Bob Ross of gaming uploads 🥰
his videos are indeed a joy to partake in
This is so dead on, I will absolutely load one of his videos to chill out or calm down
Definitely nothing near that title, hence why he doesn't even have 150k subs and been this long.😂
Never got why this game was so disliked, I've always enjoyed it. Thanks for the video!
Exactly I think it’s cuse people don’t know how to play it always upgrade first before you adventure out
Its because avgn said it was crap and people cant think for themselves.
I know avgn said this game was crap...but he was wrong
The anti-power ups were a problem, it wasn’t very intuitive to get around, and was hard as hell even if you figured out what you were supposed to do. It’s far from the worst game ever made, but it’s not number 45 on the list of best NES games
Infinitely spawning enemies, circular gun shots hitting walls, no checkpoints.
I always used tnt as a 'hot pursuit' weapon. Those frogs love to chase, so dropping tnt while they are chasing can often times take them out without you having to turn around.
They're also useful for taking out Slimes (Green Spineys on the UFO) in one shot, as well.
Also useful in handling the Fleas (the jumping insectoid enemies) before you get the whip.
could you do a guide vid on that crazy-ass nes game 'a boy and his blob'?
would be brilliant to see all the secrets & strategies of that game
Dec 2021 UPDATE: Yessss!! He did it ❤️
That was a hard game to beat. The remake was fun to beat too.
Omg, I was just looking up in depth videos on this and I am SO SO glad you did this as you're of my favorite RUclipsrs lately. I managed to beat this game when I was 9, button mashing wildly, grinding for the best gun and whip and learning when to use the best weapons like the missiles. Thank you so much!!
How did you manage to get through the mazes when. I was I kid I could never figure them out
Grid paper! I would map out my button presses with the walls. I also accidentally found the extra health in the first building but didn't realize it wasn't a glitch. It took me a while to hit that wall again, so you better believe I started push up against every wall in the game afterwards lol
@@DahrkDaiz OMG that must have been horrible
I f%#king LOVE this channel! The brief history at the beginning of each episode, the extremely detailed game play mechanics, tips etc..Even the monotony of the channel creators voice is awesome
(And I mean that with no negative connotation!)
Big fan 👊
Thanks for making such an awesome channel 🙇♂️
You're like 50years old fangirling over another man. Using emojis lmao
The reason the Christian iconography got through was that the Nintendo censors couldn't make it that far into the game, lol.
Thank you for this video, I'm going to fire up my copy this weekend and see how far I can get!
Your channel fills a void in my soul that's been missing since this days of strategy guides.
My mom bought this game for me, and her and I used to play it together back in the day. It's most DEFINITELY a Turbo game, for sure! Also, having the issue of Nintendo Power that did a feature on this game certainly helped.
Excellent music and graphics too! I credit this game with giving me my preference for the Addamses over the Munsters.
I used that Nintendo power when I played it for the video - it was very helpful! The maps I show on the sides are pictures from the issue, I just added in the path with photoshop.
Love that mixed meter music.
i'm excited to watch this. this has got to be the best guide ever because i totally remember renting this as a kid and not getting past level 1
Still the most underrated channel on RUclips. Great info. Great gameplay. great editing. Every damn week.
I had this game on NES. I actually bought it sometime in the mid 90s when I was already in high school at a comic book store that sold old NES games. I had never played it but it was cheap and I remember thinking it looked cool from the commercials I saw as a kid. I never even knew the gun stopping in the walls was a “defect”. It seemed logical to me! Go figure haha!
This game gets an unfair amount of heat, and it gets fanned on thanks to AVGN. It's no masterpiece, but the general gameplay is entertaining and soundtrack is still to this day very addicting to listen to. Great video, keep them coming.
Thanks! I couldn't agree more
I think James Rolfe has done a lot of unnecessary harm to classic gaming. Thre are games I love and have begged my friends to try, but they'll say things like "Oh, AVGN says that old thing is just too hard" or "I heard AVGN thinks that game's a piece of crap" and they never try it.
@@KamenRiderGumo You're right but at the same time, he did share light on every other games as well, be it more obscure titles or famous ones and while some are complete turds, I do agree that TMNT and this one in particular are not bad games, they just got really big difficulty spikes or irritating sections that as a kid we all struggle with, of course nowadays it's just really common to have YT videos or walktrough but in the context of when theses games were new we all get angry for the same reasons, this is why those episodes are so funny.
Such a classic. Really enjoyed playing this one back in day's. Finally turned it over when I got a Max Joy Pad with the turbo buttons lol
turbo makes it so much more relaxing - I like to play this with the NES Advantage. I like the joystick for slow top down games like this one.
@@UCanBeatVideoGames your channel is really making me understand the need for an NES Advantage (did you know there's a SNES one as well?) Better than just using ours as a kid. Turbo buttons would have really helped in a lot of games!
"Who invented that thing?" Didn't you know? Only Imperial Stormtroopers are so precise!
Ah, good ol' Fester's Quest. Like a lot of other people who've commented here, I don't get the hate for this game. It's awesome. Also the music is TOP NOTCH. That boss theme is one of my favorite 8 bit tunes, and I love that it's the theme for the UFO itself, as if the entire final zone IS the final boss fight and the Alien Leader is just the capstone to that. I didn't beat it until WAY later in life, but it was worth it, in spite of the cheesiness of the single screen ending. Year 2 has been off to a great start so far with Deja Vu and this! Can't wait to see what the next video is!
And uh, I just wanted to say thank you again. Your videos are the shining bright spot on one of my WORST work days. I can always come home after a stressful day on Saturdays and enjoy the newest video. So thank you for that. :)
...Wait, does that mean T.Rex is a di--
*USER WAS BANNED FOR BEING AN R-RATED DOUCHEBAG*
You just talk to yourself
I don't even own an NES but there's something quite soothing about these videos
Thanks for that trip down memory lane my man, I don't think I ever made it past level 1 gun as a kid before giving up.
My name is Josh I've been watching your channel for 2 years and I love your retro video games please keep the video games coming
Amazing. I played this as a kid and neither me or my poor mother could get very far. I know we got the vice grips and stumbled into at least one 3d building but we never knew what to do, and when you die you start back at the beginning. I always assumed this game was impossible. We were probably picking up every item that dropped, including the power-downs.
Angry video game nerd poisoned an entire generation against this game.
No clown he didn't, anyone with a brain "obviously not you" can tell that's the premise of the show. You clowns really get ad over another man reviewing a game. Gotta be a true beta
And all the LJN games. They're really not that bad
I salute avgn,
The game is brutal. I owned it and I had such a love hate relationship with it. It has cool graphics and great sound but it does have a lot of unfair time wastey stuff.
“You were expecting…maybe…the Ninja Turtles?!”
I did it! Thank u for the assistance, Festers Quest is now one of my fav NES games of them all. It's funny, cause I played this game one time, and was like "ha ha ha it's as bad as AVGN said it was" and never gave it another thought for years, until, yesterday I wanted to nostalge-trip it; and with this guide, found the game super straightforward, beat it very shortly after learning how to do it (unlike many other games, I've watched ur guides, learned the strats and tried to beat other games, but no luck yet; festers quest deff one the easier ones)
there are no difficult platforming segments where u fall down and have to do it all over, there are no instant death traps, it's just, keep moving forward, shoot the bad guys and avoid the damage (and weapon downgrades)
cheezed all the bosses w/ key-glitch, maybe one we'll come back to it and try to beat them for real
As a kid I played this on a 12 inch Black and White T.V. I spent an entire day trying to figure out why my gun kept randomly going up and down in power.
Dude, I love your videos. At first the dry delivery wasn't something I vibed with, but the info was so good I had to watch... but now I've grown to love the dry delivery style. When you mix in silly pop culture references w/ deadpan delivery it gets me every time. "Now I have the power." gave me a legit chuckle as I sit here working from home. I've used your guides to finish 5 games! I take selfies with all the end screens and it's really fun building a collection of images I can look back on and remember. (at 40 I start to forget some of these moments w/o visual aids).
Thanks to you I am currently on Mr. Sandman in Punch Out... I will fulfill my lifetime wish of beating Punch Out 100% legit.
Thanks again!
And Fester sits back and celebrates with some persimmons, walnut shells, and some sour milk
I like persimmons...
Green persimmons, which I've never had but from what I understand they're extremely sour.
My wife and I love your channel
:) It's fun learning about all these cool NES games and your narration is always so pleasant to listen to!
Excellent videos and series new retro players will be watching these for years to come. Hopefully they experience as much joy (and rage) as we did when these games first came out.
Outstanding. I had this as a kid and beat it on my own. That said, I never knew about the boss-annihilating key glitch, or about the 4th health point. Bravo on this full walkthrough!
This game was SO hard to beat! So many hours trying again and again and just gave it up. This video has finally cured my frustration!
I remember renting this during a really bad storm with a tornado watch and it made the atmosphere even more creepy lol. Hey i was like 9... it was scary! Never did beat this game, stupid sewers.
Thanks U Can Beat Video Games! Now i can relive my childhood nightmares.
I remember finishing this game when I was young, but I completely have no memory of the first person portions!
I had this game as a kid and never got far. I also remember playing it with a Quickshot ball controller, which always felt clunky, but I still insisted on using it. 😆
Beating this game was a fun challenge. Didn't do it until 2013, and haven't played the game since.
Only thing I have to say is regarding the final building, T.Rex's. The path you outline takes a bit longer than you really need, unless I'm missing something. After you take that 2nd left, and then the 1st right, you go to the end of the hall and turn left. It would be faster to take that right one tile before the left, then take the next left, turn left again at the wall, then take the immediate right, turn right again at the wall, and right one more time at the next wall.
I love these videos of yours, by the way. Keep up the good work.
My new favorite channel next to game sack. I've beaten 4 games with these videos that I never thought I could. You commentary and skill is amazing. Thanks a bunch
So, I bulged a disc in my back while gardening yesterday. While lying here in my bed I stumbled on your videos this morning. I've been binging them all day, and they've made me feel a lot better while stuck here. Subbed and helping out with some sweet sweet algorithmic commenting. Thank you for making my day a bit brighter!
This game was my first experience with "Game Engines." When I was a kid, I couldn't help but notice it was very similar to Blaster Master. Little did I know that both Blaster Master and Fester's Quest shared a lot of the same code and had basically the same game engine.
These videos give me so much closure. Its like getting a brain download of what it would have felt like to be a pro-player back in 1990.
Bro I love you..Iv had this game since a child one of my first games..love it but have yet to beat it and im 36 now...great underated gem.
It's interesting to see the art style of the original comics in those clips of the CGI show
Just found your channel about a week ago. It’s funny I was thinking right away “yeah do festers quest”. Turns out that you have. Lol. This was the hardest game I’ve ever played as a kid. I think I still have it. Great video. Well done
Its not as hard as Battletoads or Ghosts n' Goblins... Thats like saying its not as hard as shitting diamonds while playing an Eddie Van Halen solo.
I could never beat Ghosts n' Goblins without a continue.
@@schwarzerritter5724 I'm impressed if you could beat it at all. I made it to the final boss once but without the shield and was sent back to level 4. I wanted to punch the developers.
@@kyoku1982 A nasty prank. But on the plus side, the shield is actually a very good weapon.
Lol 😂
Thank you so much! I’ve carried a grudge against this game for decades lol. Those missiles are sweet! T Rex took forever.
Love your videos man.. appreciate and respect what you do for us gamers.
Another classic example of a NES game that could have been fun, challenging and addictive. But, the hits it takes to kill a enemy and the degradation of the pink gun and whip icon ruins it. I quote the A.V.G.N, what were they thinking. I got this game when I was 8 years old. A friend gave it to me. I popped it in and popped it out. As an 8 year old I didn't have the patience. I gave it another try in my early 20's and couldn't make it past the 3rd boss. I had no idea about the key glitch. Thanks to your great video and great knowledge, I finally beat it at 42 years old. THANKS 😊!!!
i remember as a kid i loved this game, even though i could never get further than the 2nd boss. But i had no idea who the Addams Family was at the time, as i was a kid...like 1993 or so so id be 5-6 years old.
But as i got older and the Addams family got more relevant and popular, i found myself randomly remembering this game existed and how much i enjoyed it as a kid. Not many games that arent still actively alive (mario, megaman, metroid, etc) resurface like that.
Not sure how much the IP helped the game sell back then but it definitely made me remember it later on.
I am so glad that I am not the only one who found this game to be extremely tough!
A childhood favorite of mine, even though it was so difficult, and I never got close to beating it. These videos take me back to a place in a time that will never come again.
Loved this game as a kid. I played it just last week when I had a craving for nostalgia!
Oh Wow, Fester's quest! I saw the commercial for this back in the day, but I didn't have the 'Guts' to out and play it. 😋
I used to play this in a black and white TV. I finally understand the problem with the power ups! thanks :D
Completely forgot about this game! Such a fun one! Thanks for this!!
Ahh Festers Quest i absolutely love this game!
I think if other people give it a chance they'll love it, too. thanks, john
I don't do this often, but I just wanted to say I found this channel recently and really like it. Subbed...
I unironically enjoyed how every time the powerup explanations vanished, I would look at Fester in the bathroom with a toothbrush. Such a perfectly chosen image.
I loved this game. Was never particularly good at it, but I enjoyed playing Fester's Quest.
Morticia Addams (from the original series) was one of my early crushes along with Elvira and Dolly Parton.
Got this game for Christmas 1990 and it scared the hell out of me as a 6 year old. To this day it’s hard for me to play it as it brings back those feelings.
Just beat the game for the first time using your video for the final level. Thank you for the help!
Seeing you beat this is very cathartic.
I rented this game when I was a kid. I vaguely remember walking around in circles for an hour or so before putting it away.
30 years later this is one of the best soundtracks ever
I love your channel man, it's so much better and more helpful than most out there
Canonically, when Fester lights up those sewer levels with the light bulb item, he's sticking it in his mouth and charging it with his electric personality.
Thank you so much for doing these!
Love reliving my childhood.
Mendel Palace would be pretty cool to see.
Also you will for sure be on my sub list when the join function is there.
"Getting Lurched" is my new favorite catch phrase
Awesomeness!!! 👌 🍻 This game and your videos!
This game kept me up at night trying to beat it. My school work suffered.
These videos bought my childhood back 😆
Games you have to do:
Princess tomato
Wall Street kid
Karate kid
Another top tier vid by
U Can Beat Video Games. Yeah this game pissed me off back in the day but I kept coming back. The NES music on my top 30
I knew the Addams Family was made in the '30s, but I did not know it aired on ABC. That fact made me chuckle a bit. Back in the '90s there was an Addams Family cartoon that played saturday mornings that was pretty fun. Guess which channel it aired on. Such a small thing made me smile. :)
As for the game. Hated it. Played it as a kid and learned after a few dozen failures that this was not for me. I'll take a proper playthrough, speedrun or TAS over actually playing this mess.
Now if you don't mind me, I'm going to pop open the complete series box for the old show that I got recently and just have a fun afternoon. *snap snap*
I've had this game for years. Festers quest was a festering pain in my backside. Truth be told I never got to the first boss 😂😂😂. Been years since I played it
I remember renting this one weekend when I was a lad. One big problem though, while I was lucky and had a TV in my room to play NES on it was a Black & White TV. It was a crap shoot to try and keep my gun powered up lol.
I wonder what this would be like if it was Gomez's Quest. Fester moves slow, but Gomez is an agile, acrobratic swordsman. It would be pretty fun to slash through everything.
If it was made at a later date, Gomez would probably be the New Game + character.
Loved the shout out to Dinosaucers, another awesome video, I never beat this as a kid, just rented it a few times from Blockbuster....gonna have to get out the Raspberry Pi and load it up and play thru it.
This channel reminds me of a modern video version of old issues of Nintendo Power. Love it. Keep it up, bud.
I remember renting this game when i was young and loving it .
Another seemingly impossible childhood game broken down and easy to digest. I have really been enjoying these keep it up!
Instant like and subbed. sorry if i sounded like a tool here but I really like this channel alot so far :)
This is like "Until we win".
Didn't grow up playing most NES games so I've never played this game but I did grow up playing the 16bit era addams family games which were enjoyable rentals back in the day, the movies and cartoons were really great and the movies still hold up which I don't say so often about most old media.
I beat this around 1991-1992. Only found one extra health bar in the maze and, after much trial and error, learned how to maneuver through the game and beat it. I borrowed this from someone at school without the instruction manual, so at the time, I had no idea that money could buy health. As a result, I had to beat this without getting hit, or only hit twice.
New subscriber, but a long time viewer here! I have to say that your channel is AMAZING! The nostalgia is strong here, I haven't thought of many of these games in years, much less actually see them completed.
Thank you for the awesome videos!!
Thank you!!
This game always fascinated me as a kid but I never got to play it. It looked like it was pretty cheap to buy the cart on eBay last I checked so I might pick it up and use this video as my guide!
The best game guide channel on yt!
2:48 I am one of those consumers. My dad bought it at launch and we use to play for hours and hours. 😊 I beat it for the first time about a month ago.
The scene where Fester sees the space craft cracks me up every. Single. Time.
My parents rented me this game when I was...probably about 7? I liked Uncle Fester, but I couldn't figure the game out during the 2-day rental. I remember finding the building the first boss is in, but I think I got lost in there as I don't remember actually fighting the boss, lol. In fact, I think I remember being kind of scared by the pseudo 3-D segments, as they felt very claustrophobic to me.
Also, wow, Dinosaucers? That was my jam back then, along with TMNT. I didn't know there were any other Secret Scouts out there!
Really loved this video, thanks so much!
Oh my god. So much memories about this game.
I loved this game as a kid- nostalgia overload here.
