blaster master was my favorite NES game of all time, i used to be able to beat it in about 80 mins or so as a kid, i would beat it before school if i woke up early enough.
This is one of those games that was truly harmed by its lack of a password or battery saves. I just couldn't force myself to sit long enough to finish it, even to this day.
The devs: Nobody’s gonna beat it. Let’s not even bother fixing the ending. Also, that last boss is pretty cool. Let’s have him be all the bosses in Fester’s Quest!
The most DIFFICULT HAZARD in this game is that wall 2 module. It is so hard on level 8 not to kill yourself by wrapping around the platforms and hitting spikes. As a kid I would waste the entire day getting to the end, only to die hopelessly on that horrible level. I was only able to beat it recently with the aid of save states.
Was recently playing through this again (been a long time since the last time I played through it) and you are completely correct. Wall clinging when you don't want to on level 8 is the worst. It's too bad the game didn't have an option to enable/disable those powerups.
I absolutely loved this game as a kid, though I never did beat it. It was also a very trying time in my life, my parents got divorced. I specifically remember sitting in my dad's new apartment eating TMNT cereal and playing this game.
Those small enemies were tough. What I used to do was pop out of the tank and shoot them as Jason; the shots are lined up to hit them just right. You might take some damage, but Jason fully recovers his health every time he goes back into Sophia III. Bit of a renegade solution, but it worked well for me, especially with the mines.
I remember Blaster Master every day... I have the first level music as my ringtone. Back when I played Blaster Master I would always hum to the music as I played... the music was the best on the NES.
I remember as a kid when I played this game, I imagined Blaster Master being way more expanded and mysterious, almost like a movie. So crazy how kids' imagination works. Nice video btw man!
I think that aspect of the game was the most alluring thing to me as a kid. Heck, I spent MONTHS exploring just the first 3 levels, combing every nook and cranny before eventually getting to the entrance to level 4. Perhaps it was because it took such time and effort that I'd feel such a sense of accomplishment when a new secret/passage was uncovered. Not unlike the first Zelda game.
@@jeanpaulmichell7243 I explored everything in levels 1-3 also... but because I couldn't beat the third boss. I beat him a handful of times with only a few lives and no continues left so I never made it far into stage 4.

Beating this game on the NES back in the day was one of the toughest gaming challenges ever for me. No saves of any kind, so it all has to be done in one sitting. Dying at the final boss was AGONY, but I finally did it
I remember how disappointed I was as a kid when my mom bought me this game. It was a title I never heard of. I didn't even find it that fun when I first played it. I think it was because I was getting really getting into RPGs. After I finished most of the games I had, I decided to give it another chance. Boy was I wrong! I was glad I saved the best for last. My fondest memories of games that I played was this, Metroid and Clash at Demonhead. I made it to level 8, but never managed to finish the game. Really happy to see it made it 22nd on NES best games. Well deserved. I've since watched a full walk through on RUclips, but I'll happily watch it again. One of my favorite games with one of my favorite youtuber. Can't be that, let's go! I can already hear the awesome music playing in my head when the game starts!
I know this is a year old. But, DUDE!!! Why did I not know about this when I was a kid? Regardless. I played this for 10 minutes and fell in love. Thank you for showing me this game. I can totally sit down with my son and play this for hours. You guy's Rock!
Thank you so much! I just finished it 2 minutes ago!!! When I was young, I had never gone past area 3... It’s crazy how your vehicle becomes awesome as you progress. For an NES game, it was pretty awesome but most kids found it way too hard back then.
I dont recall how old I was but I beat it too when I was a kid. I am currently playing Blaster Master Zero 2 on PC, It's everything I'd want from the series so far. I had the ps1 game or may still have it, it just wasnt as fun as it was 3d and pretty bland.

I had beaten this game since the spring of 2013. The frog is the one that really had got to me when I had killed it. I thought that Jason was going in there to save it. It has been 9 years that I had beaten Blaster Master.
I had one of the best gaming days in my thirty plus years as a gamer yesterday thanks to this guide! As a 14 year old I loved this game and is my favorite all time NES game. But like many was only able to get so far (level 5 boss). However with the guidance of your awesome channel (and a save state or two...) I was able to finally beat this game! Thank you, thank you thank you!
I can't believe you left that one green block they're in the room before the photophage boss. I think that broke my brain. After talking about needing to destroying them all and then leaving just one. OMG
I remember making it to the Plutonium boss and defeating it on my last man with no more continues. I was so freaking happy thinking I had beaten the game. I freaked out when the Underworld boss appeared. I barely had any health left. I frantically raced around the room trying to avoid his whip. He moved so fast that I only lasted a minute. That was one of the biggest FUs I experienced in a game. Never picked up the game again.
I've read that, originally, the Underworld Lord had its own stage after stage 8. The tank upgrade you got after beating the Plutonium Boss would let you drive on spikes, so there was an additional area with spikes you could then get to and go to Level 9. You can see the boss chamber itself changes between the fights. There's actually a sprite for the Spike upgrade in the game, but I don't think it works.
One thing you didn't mention. The grenade glitch works both ways. If you pause when the frog hits you with the tongue or one of the other bosses hit you you will keep taking damage as well.
Unfortunately, in the second and third remakes of Blaster Master (or fourth if you consider it as a part of Super Planetary War Records: Metafight), the grenade glitch does not work, and, in Blaster Master Zero, some of the bosses are different, plus there are some more bosses in that game as well, and an additional Area, namely, Area 9.
I remember always popping out of my tank to gun down those worm things since Jason's life gets refilled when he gets in the tank and Im usually able to gun them down before they can kill him.
You had me up until 1am watching your Simons Quest video now this. Your narration of the game play reminds me of how Bob Ross would narrate a painting. “Just gonna kill this happy little enemy down here. There much better.” Glad I found you.
I never knew the backstory of this game but I played the hell out of it. I came up with my own story. Teen handles a poisonous toad. It escapes and as he chases it he begins to hallucinate. After tripping into a ditch he falls into a deep coma. He fights all his personal demons and then finds inner peace within himself. I dunno if he ever wakes up.
It's my personal favorite as well. It was the 3rd or 4rth nes game I owned, and out of all the incredible games I played after it (many classics) Blaster Master is still my #1.
Right...a hero... *scoots the corpse of the area 4 boss under the carpet I always interpreted the ending as Jason just getting a new pet frog after the adventure was over. Or maybe the frog had tadpole children before the events of the game. I don't recall specifically how they address the plot hole in Zero.
@@ZappBranniglenn well its actually like a nightmare type thing like puppet zelda. Or If it is the pet It had been mutated and hostile making it no longer the same pet
So true! I'm happy they finally did the Blaster Master Zero series, but there was so much potential here - I'm sure they could have done a couple sequels on the NES that would have been awesome.
I swear as a kid we had it made and didn’t even know it. Could not have asked to have such awesome games to play. Another favorite game. Thank you for doing these videos. #gameon🕹
One of my favorite games of all time. I started playing it in the early 90's, my brother teaching me about the grenade glitch. It's funny what was changed to become Master Blaster from its original Japanese counterpart. It was a completely different story and they never updated the sprite for the main character at the end scene to be Jason for the NES release, which is why his hair is blue, and they just swapped out the other character for Fred. Not many games have that kind of situation and I'm glad this game was such a hit. It was such a vital part of my childhood. I still need to play the PS4 reboot.
B.M. is still my favorite NES game to this day. I had to play it at my buddies when we were in High School. I had the Sega Master System so I would let him borrow it and my Phantasy Star and He would let me borrow his NES. I actually beat B.M. before he did. It was always worth some bragging rights to beat your friends game before him. Good times. :)
This is one of the greatest games of that era, though it never quite got the recognition. Still fun as heck to play today. I've only ever had one criticism: there really should have been a save/password system in place. The game is so long and difficult, a save feature was an obvious choice that was grossly over-looked.
Indeed. Unless you knew all of the tricks, trying to beat the game in one sitting was timing consuming. I typically got to level 5 and was worn out just getting there.
No doubt about it. I'm also pretty sure the 'fish' enemies are little humans doing the exact same swimming animation as the protagonist and shooting the same projectiles... Funny thing is, he's probably just going with the interpretation his kid mind first had when seeing it back in the day.
I bought the Blaster Master book at a book fair at school. It was alright for youth fiction. I was just excited to read a book about video game style fantasy at that time
When I played this game as a kid, I think I got to the boss of the water level, but never beat it. This guide was a joy to follow, and I was able to complete it for the first time. I'm no pro gamer, so any boss I could use the pause/kill trick, I did. I can't believe how easy the final boss was. All you need to do is get to him with full guns and you almost can't lose... and the room right before him all but gives it to you. I really think this game is special. All the different modes of play, the really awesome graphics... all the power ups... flying, riding on walls and ceilings. Giant sprite bosses. I'm really surprised this game didn't do well in Japan. This is a certified banger.
Thanks, Dawn! This game was mind blowing back in the 80s - the game was huge, the music was great, and it would change from playing like Metroid to playing like Zelda - two of my favorite games at the time! Honestly, I think it still holds up - it would obviously have a save feature if made in modern times, but otherwise this game is near perfect.
This is a really great guide, thank you for all the work you put into it! I especially appreciate how you elaborate on the little tricks like pressing select to exit the vehicle and down to enter the doorways. Back in the day I wasn't able to complete many NES titles simply because there was little to no explanation of controls, win conditions or even what to do with many of the items you receive. And that's not even mentioning where to go next or what to do when you get there (Take the infamous Castlevania II tornado/dead end for example). I'm sure your guides will help many players finally complete NES games of their youth. You are doing a great service to the retro gaming community, keep it up!
I'm actually filled with rage as I watch this. Alas, in 5th grade I let someone borrow this, in an effort to make friends at a new school, and the prick kept it. Then threatened me with his wolf-like posse of Puerto Ricans. I went to break into his house, but there were bars on the windows. Blaster Master is one of 3 games I played, but didn't beat. I never had a chance to finish it.
Legitimately surprised there was no mention of the Pause/Grenade trick during the battle with Mother Brain. It's probably the most well-known trick in that game, and can be used on like half the bosses for an easy win.
I think they hair was blue at the end because while they replaced the initial story from the anime-like intro, they probably didn't bother replacing the ending, seeing as few people would actually see it.
For over ten years, I could never finish this game. The farthest I was able to go was to area 3. I wasn't able to progress... until now. Thanks to this guide, I was finally able to beat the entire game two days after downloading it from the virtual console. To the creator, I salute you for this awesome and informative guide.👍
Like many others here, we all loved this game but never beat it. Not because it was difficult, but because good god it was too long. Thanks for sloggin' through this
My favorite part of this video is the sped-up sections, where you keep missing the damn jumps by just a bit and have to do each one 2-3 times. I think that sums up a lot about this game right there.
The RUclips algorithm did me well today, you earned yourself a sub outstanding stuff. This was the first game I EVER paid for out of my own money back in 1989!
That's pretty far! It feels like a real punch to the gut when you lose your last life and end up kicked back to the title screen. Thank YOU for watching!
I've had this game since 1990 and that's about as far as I can get too, but it doesn't keep me from trying again. Same with Ninja Gaiden. just so much replay value.

I won’t include any details about how much I currently need that and didn’t know it, it’s saved my life. I thought you should know that, in case you’ve ever questioned weather or not what you do here matters on a big scale. I can’t understand how this channel doesn’t have a much more massive subscriber base. You have something really special here. Please keep making content.
I loved this game as a kid. I still do in fact. I do love that the first enemies you fight before the first boss look like Metroids and the first boss is called mother brain.
I absolutely love your channel. I’m sorry I found it so late but I’m here for you now my friend. Thank you for all of the great videos. I have been binge watching for weeks now.
The beginning where his pet frog runs away made me cry as a young kid. Losing a beloved pet is SAD AF. The opening theme with your dog sounds like the opening theme to "General Chaos."
@@UCanBeatVideoGames , there is also a third and fourth story to the game. The story in the Game Boy Color version of the game, which is called Blaster Master: Enemy Below, aside from some boss and enemy area changes, the story was the same. In the PS3, Wii, and Xbox 360 versions of the game, there was some sort of story that everything was being infected by viruses that turned them into mutated nightmares. However, in Blaster Master Zero, they combined all of the stories into essentially one main story, plus added things from Blaster Master 2, Blaster Master: Blasting Again, and lots of all new content in the Blaster Master Zero Trilogy as well. The ultimate ending in the Blaster Master Zero Trilogy, namely, the dual endings in Blaster Master Zero 3, are sad, regardless of which one you choose.
I remember before I could make it all the way to the ending, I mistakenly thought the first giant frog boss you had to fight and kill (area 4?) was your own pet frog, having already been driven mad by the radiation. It always bummed me out.
I love that you talked about the book. I read it as a child and it was actually very well done. I did a book report on it in 4th grade where we did dioramas, so I recreated one of the overhead levels.
Master Blaster is definitely a part of my top 10 N.E.S. favorites. I'm Glad you got to show me how close I was. Easy to get lost and you could use both guns simultaneously. I guess hence why I never hovered. Good Game Play. Peace and Love.
I never had the instruction manual for the game, used to rent it when I was a kid. Can't tell you how stuck I was after area 3, so many years not knowing area 4 was back at the start of the game. Mind blown.
This is the 1st Blaster Master review/ play-through I have seen that shows the importance of gun power & the ability to strafe in overhead areas- both of which I feel is the key to success. Good job-
Looking back on this I have no idea how I actually beat this as a kid. Oh right, zero responsibilities as a child _and_ actual 3 month summer breaks. God, I miss those days. Such a classic and with a killer soundtrack!

Back in the day I was the only one of my friends that not only figured out Hover, but thought that it could be used at the start area to go into the next zone. And while I'd like to think it was just me being awesome, I remembered the part in Castelvannia Simons Quest where you need to go back to the beginning to summon that whirlwind.
I own a copy of the game and never really powered through. Just watched the intro now as I want to figure it out. I never realised before that it was non linear. Keep making these great videos.
Dracula was on the front of castlevania, metal gear was on the cover of metal gear, ghosts and goblins had the end boss on the box as well, not to mention double dragon.. But none were just the game graphic.
Those are all good examples. Little Nemo shows the Nightmare King on the cover, too. But I cant think of any other game that shows a late game boss ripped straight from the game on the front cover. For some of those bad box art games, it would have been a huge improvement!
I used to buy ''Worlds of Power'' books every time my school had a book fair or that quarterly mail in thingy. Got me into reading my grandmothers sci-fi and fantasy novels at a young age....O.K., back to this great game.

Right...a hero... *scoots the corpse of the area 4 boss under the carpet
I always interpreted the ending as Jason just getting a new pet frog after the adventure was over.
This is a great classic game that was lost in time.
So true! I'm happy they finally did the Blaster Master Zero series, but there was so much potential here - I'm sure they could have done a couple sequels on the NES that would have been awesome.
Blaster Master Zero 3 saved the Japanese version (MetaFight) from limbo by giving it a place in the canon.
I swear as a kid we had it made and didn’t even know it. Could not have asked to have such awesome games to play. Another favorite game. Thank you for doing these videos. #gameon🕹
lmao the box art showing the final monster, "good luck getting this far f*#kers"
They should have just put a bunch of the worms on the cover.
Its not an "f". Its actually a small picture of an old fashioned pistol revolver.
No doubt about it. I'm also pretty sure the 'fish' enemies are little humans doing the exact same swimming animation as the protagonist and shooting the same projectiles...
Funny thing is, he's probably just going with the interpretation his kid mind first had when seeing it back in the day.
Thank you. Him saying 'f' was driving me bananas.
The game clearly has letters for powers ups like the "P" & "H" but the gun power up has a gun pic on it but he thinks it looks like an "F"...lol
@@VGamer07 he probably thinks it looks like an f because of the revolvers spinner. Show some respect. People make mistakes
This drove me crazy the whole video.
This channel is going to blow up.
thanks! it feel like it's starting already!!
It really should. Great content.
No reason for it not to. It's nostalgic, informative, in-depth, and importantly, charming.
This is one of the best channels I came across in a year 🙌🙌🙌💯🔥!
I bought the Blaster Master book at a book fair at school. It was alright for youth fiction. I was just excited to read a book about video game style fantasy at that time
Wow that’s pretty crazy. That’s where I got mine. I was in fourth grade I bought it at book fair in our library. I still have it today.🤘🏻
An absolute gem of a game. I loved it as a kid, and it is still fun to replay.
Beat this back in late 80s , it was so fun beat it again, just watching reminds me of how great this game was, great vid
You must have a lot of old Nintendo Power Magazines to source from. Love this game.
Oh my gosh, I'm so sorry.
One of my all time favorites!
Legitimately surprised there was no mention of the Pause/Grenade trick during the battle with Mother Brain. It's probably the most well-known trick in that game, and can be used on like half the bosses for an easy win.
Someone: didn’t watch the whole video lol. It was mentioned.
This channel should deserve so much visiblity and praise, the amount of work on these video is crazy.
1 hour and 25 mins with speed through sections and thats knowing what to do! Love the vengence banter though
omg i loved this game when i was a kid, my neighbor would bring the game over and we would play all night
Thanks man! Love this game!
Hey, thank you for this. Blaster Master is a great game. Farthest I've ever got to is the first wall climb upgrade.
This is the best channel ever. As a 37 year old OG gamer, You get it. Thanks man.
one of my favorite games as a kid I was about 11.... pretty involved game really was way ahead of its time for nes... Cleverly made!... They need to remake this game for modern day era!! Love love the channel!!!!
Hands down one of the best NES games
Amazing music (my favorite from any game), amazing art, amazing game. One of the few i owned as a child so i played it countless times but never beat it. May need to go back and beat it with your help. I thoroughly enjoyed this video. Liked and subd
if you hold the grenade button, you can strafe, keeping the same facing. this is very useful on many bosses if you have a long range gun.
One of the most useful tips, for sure! I do this on most of the bosses in the video. Not sure why they don't tell you about strafing in the manual.
Another great game. My grandmother use to get me every game for my bday or xmas that was a hit that year.metal gear, mario 2 and 3, circut city, link to the past, so many i can hardly remember but you jog my memory as i watch them.lol. She was the lady who held the key to the cage for all the products so i never had to wait. I got them all soon as they came out every 6 months. Lol.
Still have my copy to this day. I beat this game as a kid being introduced to the metroid style games. Love them to this day. Thanks for all you do and the great videos.
I just found ur Channel an I just wanted to say I absolutely 💯 love what u are doing here I'll watxh an like every video u put out I'm happily awaiting W&w 2 Iron Sword 😀
I struggled with the 5th boss for a whole summer as a kid, then once I got passed that it was smooth sailing. I had the Worlds of Power novel too; I loved both growing up!
The power of nostalgia is real. I feel like I reconnect with myself during the best parts of my childhood with every one of your videos.
I'm listening to this while working. The perfect companion.
I loved this game as a kid. I still do in fact. I do love that the first enemies you fight before the first boss look like Metroids and the first boss is called mother brain.
gremlins 2 was one of my all time favorites
This game was the bane of my existence (along with a few others) when I was a kid in the 80’s lol. I would get so far and run into a wall.
I had the Ninja Gaiden Worlds of Power that was an excellent book.
A few years ago, I watched a friend of mine beat this from start to finish in one sitting. It was quite impressive to watch!
The story here is a lot more personal that the generic sci-fi stuff in the Japanese original.
As a kid I always thought the frog mutated into the tank and you were basically partnering up with your pet frog in this game!
Loved this one. We called the grenade launcher the "Bubble gun". The hardest boss was always the crab!
I love that you talked about the book. I read it as a child and it was actually very well done. I did a book report on it in 4th grade where we did dioramas, so I recreated one of the overhead levels.
Love the "What a coincidence" a radioactive Box In your back yard...lol Love your Videos. Keep up the great work!
🤣 Thanks Alex!
To attack the worms and mines have Jason jump out of the car. He insta heals as soon as he gets back in. Love your work!
One of my favs. I had a Scholastic book that tells how to beat it in a story form. I managed to beat this late one night as a kid, was a great game.
My friends and I made this game our primary goal in 1990 and we did not have the instructions. Finding Area 4 was a complete mind bender!
A play through of Gremlins 2 would be cool too!
Master Blaster is definitely a part of my top 10 N.E.S. favorites. I'm Glad you got to show me how close I was. Easy to get lost and you could use both guns simultaneously. I guess hence why I never hovered. Good Game Play. Peace and Love.
Bro I have watched a few of these now and you are totally making me miss playing these games. Blaster Master was a favorite of mine. Great game.
I never had the instruction manual for the game, used to rent it when I was a kid. Can't tell you how stuck I was after area 3, so many years not knowing area 4 was back at the start of the game. Mind blown.
OMFG ! I had totally forgotten about those books. I loved those & read everyone of them.
"F"!? What are you talking about? It's a GUN! The "F" that you're talking about is the cylinder of the revolver! You know, a type of GUN!
I had that book and the Castlevania book too as a kid. I love these old games.
I like to read these Worlds of Power books with my nephews- they really enjoy hearing these wild stories!
1:12:38 dude you are KING NES player! Where the EFF were you when I needed you back then??? Thanks for going through and finding out your OWN patterns/ideas!
Another underrated developer back then was Tengen. I loved Tengen games and hardly anyone I knew had them. My dad got me a bunch for Christmas one year 88 I think
Thanks!! You should definitely give this one another try, I had a lot of fun playing it for the video.
Fun fact: This game was so cool to me growing up that, until I seen this video, I remembered it as a game on the SNES.
@@UCanBeatVideoGames at least they didn't hire the box art people for megaman, am I right? 😆
Wow good point. Never realized that
I used to buy ''Worlds of Power'' books every time my school had a book fair or that quarterly mail in thingy.
Got me into reading my grandmothers sci-fi and fantasy novels at a young age....O.K., back to this great game.
Found your channel this week and have enjoyed it tremendously. Seeing all the games that I remember nostalgically just from seeing on boxes but never got to play, let alone beat, then living vicariously through watching you play, it's been a treat. Great job on your content.
