I'm literally binge watching all of these episodes. I like all the brief histories you give before the walk through. Also the tone. Very interesting... Lol Mike Jones
This game was legendary, one of the best on the NES, I spent months before finally beating it, this was a game that myself, my sister, and my mother all played together as we discovered the secrets, this is special to me. The soundtrack still in my head to this day, thank you for this awesome video and your channel, subscribed!
Thanks!! This has always been one of my favorite NES games, and it makes me a little bit sad to this day that we never got a StarTropics 3 on SNES. Would have loved to see what they could have done with 16 bits.
@@UCanBeatVideoGames So true! I would settle for a switch version but SNES could have shaped the genre, even on to games like Zelda. I would take anything Startropics related...
One nice trick in captain bells cave when in the room with the holes above where the wooden spikes, the rats can provide a clue as to safe areas to walk, they will not walk on a spot where you could fall through
I did not see that Mike Jones drop coming lmao ... dude this niche you found of doing both an optimzed playthrough while also doing a retrospective is great! My favorite retro channel that i found in while.
You are absolutely correct when you said this game has "the best ending on the NES," specifically that slideshow of fantastic pictures illustrating memorable moments throughout your adventure.
I remember that as a kid, I rented Startropic often. Oh boy can I tell how frustrated I was the first time I finally made it to the whale only to be stuck because I lacked that code. Tried calling the video store, friends, etc but to no avail. I even tried to learn english back then in case I had missed the code through interacting with one of the NPCs. Internet didn’t exist for us. So for years I left it unfinished until it occured to me that I could just try every single frequency until I hit the proper one and managed to finish Startropics for the first time. By far the worst thing I experienced on a NES game.
Totally unnecessary code. Like I know Nintendo didn't like game rentals, but this really feels like they went too far. You could buy the game and absent mindedly throw that paper away!

@@UCanBeatVideoGames I do feel like it's kind of a neat little interactive bit for the game, but I really wish they had included the code somewhere else as well, as the same damn thing happened to my family. I beat the game as a kid using the same method around 2001'ish. I got it in a stack of NES games and had to kinda guess the codes since I didn't have the letter.
I remember the rooms that go dark once you enter them. My mom would snap a quick picture on the polaroid camera which helped me navigate in the dark lol. I miss those days and my mom.
It's true Zoda's Revenge was massively unappreciated. The game's music as a whole straight up slaps and to this day remains one of my favorites gameplay-wise and music-wise. My new personal favorite channel. Love these videos! This one was one of my favorites as a kid growing up and I had a hard childhood but I remember my favorite part was coming home from school and popping this game in to escape. Great to see Star Tropics getting some love.
Thanks, John! I love StarTropics! Its sad that they never made a third game, I really wish Nintendo would put a small team on making a new StarTropics in a retro style. I would have loved a more open ended adventure where you could sail around in your sub finding weird islands with fun towns or dungeons to explore
As a kid playing this game I could never get past the Parrot. So it's nice to see the rest of the game now. I was lucky enough to get the game new and had the paper with the secret code. That was so cool as a kid!
Hey! StarTropics speedrunner here! Great guide! Just thought I'd pop in with some helpful info for the Mummu room that you said you hadn't been able to figure out yet. So the way it works is every Mummu *except* for the two that spawn at the bottom left and bottom right of the screen needs to be killed for the door to open. The two bottom ones can be left alone, so long as they don't get in your way. They usually end up forming a "conga line" though so killing them all tends to happen anyway. A good way to avoid those two is to go up upon entering the room and doing your best to keep track of two "duds" as best as you can while dispatching the others. Hard to do, even in a speedrun, so don't feel bad if you just end up having to kill them all.
I watched a speed run of star tropics recently, not sure how old it was. GDQ Maybe? Maybe you were a player or commentary? They talked about how nice and helpful the community was. If I can learn more about computers and streaming I'll have to check you all out. I just checked, it was SGDQ from 2017! Wow.
When I was a kid, I always wished there was a TV channel where you really got to watch video games. I'm glad we gotten there. Third time I'm watching this particular episode. ❤❤❤
Star Tropics was a very impressive technical achievement for an NES game. The amount of colors, complex graphics, mechanics, and dialogue they squeezed into that little cartridge was amazing for the state of the technology they were using. I appreciate that the game starts off right out of the gate with cheesy humor. C island (in the sea, and shaped like a C). Really sets the expectations of the player for what they're getting into.
To this day, I still hum the theme of star tropics in my head. From the day I played this game when I was a kid, it has remained as one of my top favorite games. Thank you for this! Now I can play it even better!
Thanks a bunch for this episode. Trip down nostalgia lane. This game frustrated my bro and I so much. We'd take turns on the game; when one of us lost all our lives and had a game-over, the other person would have a go. We yelled so many f-bombs at the game. XD But when we finally, FINALLY beat this damn game, victory was so damn sweet.
Thank you so much. I betathe entire game using this guide. It was a godsend. This channel is the best gaming guide on RUclips. Nothing is beating these.
These are amazing. I grew up with many of the games you feature and they defined my childhood. Now in my early 40s I have the will but not the time to replay them so perfectly with such "turn over every rock" detail that my inquisitive exploring nature would have me do. The Gauntlet start to finish showing every room video you did for example. Even using save states I still can't dedicate a weekdays worth of evenings. Now I can watch while still working my day computer job. Thank you for the A+ presentation.
Great video. I beat this game with my mother back when it was released. Watching this was a big nostalgia trip. I remember those last few chapters being really difficult, especially the space ship ones.
The parrot part was funny. It definitely looked like the bird was being inappropriate at first, but he was telling you the notes to play on the piano: do - re - me - fa(r) - so - la - ti - do. What he sang was the order to what you played. Still funny, but at least it makes sense. Love your content!!!
Here's an interesting tidbit. Like the bottle in the beginning, if you don't talk to Baboo and try to get the lighter, it WON'T be there. So they made sure the you had to converse with him to proceed. Also your Uncle was abducted so that he could translate the stuff on the meteor for the aliens. He says so himself.
OMG! I've been hunting for the game for decades! I remembered pieces of it playing it at someone's house as a little kid and I could never find any reference to it anywhere until now! I'm going to go relive a forgotten piece of my childhood!
Holy crap, what a ride! I have to admit, I have even less urge to beat this game after watching this video. WAY too many gotcha traps. But I'm so glad to have finally seen it done. And the commentary was 10/10. I'm so glad I stumbled on this channel.
This is one of my favorite games on the NES and in my top 5 for that system! I always thought they did an exceptional job on the pixel art and the music in this game and it's some of the best I've seen on the NES. I also loved the ending were you can talk to people and see all the effort you put in pay off! Many games just roll credits (usually after a cut scene after the final boss), but Star Tropics went further than that and it felt far more rewarding to finally finish a difficult game!
When I was younger I would always get stuck at the Captain Bell piano puzzle. It wasn't until I was older and had a better understanding of music that I finally figured it out. (Do Re Me Fa So La Ti Do applies to the keys on the piano and what Peter says)
At 48:50 the bird's song has musical references to singing notes using a relative scale. The notes are Do (pronounced Dough) Re (Rey) Mi Fa So La and Ti. In a key of C, this would start a C and go along the white keys on a keyboard to a full octave, minus one. So when the bird says 'Do Me' it's more like "Do, Mi' or C E. Do Me So Far is Do Mi So Fa or C, E, G, F. This is how you're supposed to know which keys to press in the following keyboard puzzle. As a kid I was proud of the fact that, as Cap would say, "I understood that reference!" since I was taking choir at the time.

I’ve been watching a lot of these on my home tv while building magic the gathering decks. As an 80’s baby who missed out on a lot of these games as a kid it’s really cool to see them in this context. I really like you’re thorough coverage and history in the intros.
I remember getting stuck after renting this game. The place in question was the spot where you stick in some sort of 3 lettered password. At the time no one had internet so I had to bet my uncle to use his copy of the game. At the time it was one of the very few games that had what the Japanese call an omaku(sp?) pack. Basically an extra pack. It consisted of a letter from your father that you run under water to reveal the code that you put in the game. I still remember it to this day I think, 747.
Yeah, it’s kinda sad that games no longer have aspects like this, but nice at the same time that we can just look it up and no one has to get stuck like you did
Same - I rented this game, and using the force of my full autism I brute forced the code. Started at 000, crossing each one off on a piece of paper... took me 747 tries xD
Sadly, the whole point of that code was because Nintendo was trying to kill the video game rental industry in the US. They got it illegalized in Japan, but they started adding blocks and dirty tricks to games that you needed the manuals for because they lost the lawsuit in the US. -- That's also why a bunch of our games are way harder.
Favorite game as a kid...watching the ghost tunnel part and remembering learning all the trick exits the hard way really made me smile haha. It WAS mean!
Fantastic walkthrough, my dude! I've played through this game a million times and I still learned some things from this. Also, pretty hilarious at times!
Great sense of humor in this game, made better by your sense of humor! I really enjoyed this, and I'm happy to see you have a walkthrough of the sequel as well. I'm off to watch that now!
I played this game like a million times as a kid and could never make it to the end, always stalled at the first version of Zoda. So cool to finally see the ending!
This was COOL! Thank you for showing this off, I never got to see this entire game, it was hard as nails when I was a kid (and of course I lost the letter) but I still have the cartridge someplace
Sure Baboo is there to greet you at the end, but sadly the Pig didn't make it through the game... Beating this game a few years ago on my NES Mini without the Game Genie made it all worth while.
I played this one a lot on the old school NES but I still learned some new info watching your playthrough and listening to your commentary. Love your channel. Keep the videos coming!
Thanks for showing me star ⭐ tropics as it's on my NES classics unit and I've never played it but now I will play it and show my children the game ! Thank you !
I’m glad I’m not the only one who thought the shaman was holding a carrot. I think the fuzzy image through the RF connector on the 13” TV in my childhood game room blurred her hand enough to make me think that.
Ahh Startropics, some of the catchiest music (and lease sensical high score counters) on the entire NES. And our friends in Japan never really got to play it. And the chances of a third game in the series? I remain pessimisticola. I'll … see myself out.
Your videos give me so much joy! These are games I loved as a kid. I remember literally dipping the letter that came with the game in water for one of the codes. It was awesome!
1:08:35 - I recently learned that if you jump back up there on the left (not the part where you’ll die but the left-most part) theres a secret area with some goodies
Every time I hear the "God save the queen" theme during that ship sinking cutscene, I automatically substitute the words with the Royal Canadian Kilted Yaksman anthem.
Hehe, still remember some of the words to that song: "Our country reeks of trees. Our yaks are really large and they smell like rotting beef carcasses."
@@MajorTeag "And we have to clean up after them, And our saddle sores are the best, We proudly wear women's clothing And searing sand blows up our skirts." "And the buzzards, they soar overhead, And poisonous snakes will devour us whole, And our bones will bleach in the sun. And we will probably go to *PBBT* And that is our great reward For being the Royal Canadian Kilted Yaksmen."
You make the BEST video game walkthroughs EVER! The map of the interior of the whale is COOL! I remember getting lost in there for hours, when I was younger. Seeing the map is so surreal! I almost just like watching your walkthroughs, even when I don't intend on playing the games haha Thank you for what you do! It is so cool and a revisit to childhood - only a revisit to all the mysteries I did not realize.
1:10:30 There’s also a secret opening in the wall to the left leading to a switch (seen at 1:10:50) for some throwing stars (asterisk) in that room too
StarTropics is a game I never played as a kid. Was never interested. But I saw this video, and it's free to play on the Switch if you have the online pass. Followed your game play all the way through. Great success! Thanks a bunch!
this was one of the greatest NES games ever made, even the sequel was pretty damn good despite the hate it gets. i really wish they'd bring it back and make a whole new game. there used to be a website dedicated to making a third installment though i think it's defunct by now.
Omg that code is exactly what screwed me when I was a kid..that's hilarious..I'm breaking this game back out from my collection..well done once again 🤘🏼🤙🏼
I remember this game! It was kind of scary when I was a kid and it was hard, especially when the lights go out and you have to remember where the squares are to jump on
I liked this game. I was only able to play it whenever my cousin came over since he owned it and despite never being able to beat Chapter 5, it was still a lot of fun.
Definitely worth a second look - this is one of my favorites! I don't really understand why they make you talk to everyone, most of them don't have anything interesting to say!
My brother and I played this game back in the day, it was really something. The movement alone making things rough but gosh, quite the story up there with the Final Fantasy games and a bit of Zelda.
Dude, im off work and I love almost all of your game reviews!! Way better than watching a boring long play or a speed run u can't understand!! Do roger rabbit!!!
When I first got this game as a kid, I had an Uncle Steve who played video games too. I thought my uncle had put the letter in the box with the game, but fortunately my grandparents had more sense than I did
I watched my cousin play this game and thought it was really cool. I had long forgotten the name and all my searches ended up taking me to Earthbound results. Now, after so many decades, I can sleep. 😆
Great Gameplay and Walkthrough. You didn't show all the secrets, but you clearly didn't need them. ^^ Star Tropics is one of my NES-Favourites. 💖🏝 1:06:30 The stepladder from Zelda 1 would be very helpful here. :-D
My dad and I beat this game when I was 9 years old. No Internet guides, no tips from friends because no one had this game... Just our own metal. It's an accomplishment I wouldn't mind framing one day 😉
I think the first time i ever saw anything from this game was in a shot from the remake of 'Homeward Bound'. The kids were playing this, but as is tradition, the sound effects were generic Atari beeps and the kids were slapping around the controller.
Just a quick note referring the stopwatch and gadflies: if a gadfly is charging you the watch will almost always slow them instead of freezing them in place.
Thanks to this video, I have just finished Star Tropics! What an amazing but brutal game. I would have struggled with this even when I was a kid with lots of time and limited games. The ending is amazing... The screenshots give all the feels lol. Thanks again! My next one to finish will be Castlevania, but I am going to get Star Tropics 2, probably on Wii U virtual console if Nintendo persists in not bringing this to the Switch Online Service.
That dirty trick in the Ghost Village is the reason I was stuck for so many years as a kid. Mostly because that's the only dead end room that has a hidden shadow wall. I had to use a walkthrough to find it myself.
Yeah, I remember Nintendo Power really helping with the Ghost Tunnel. The room that looks like a dead end but you actually have to walk through the wall is very devious.
I played startropics 2 first. I eventually came back to this game and beat it as well. I suggest anyone play this first. The controls are so much smoother in 2. He does a good job making this look smooth.

The song at the end of Chapter 5 is actually supposed to be "God save the Queen." Which is "do mi so fa, do mi."
That would make far more sense given he's supposed to be a british pirate.
I’ve been watching a lot of these on my home tv while building magic the gathering decks. As an 80’s baby who missed out on a lot of these games as a kid it’s really cool to see them in this context. I really like you’re thorough coverage and history in the intros.
As a kid, everyone I knew loved this game. It was a great combo of fun and challenging
Love what youre doing, this channel is a gem!
Awesome walkthrough. I never knew about that pill room in the last Zoda area with the troopers. Here is hoping you do Startropics 2 one day.
I will definitely do StarTropics 2 one day, probably in the next few months. Love that game!
@@UCanBeatVideoGames i need to play this. Didnt know in my childroom that startropics has a sequel. I love(d) the first one so much!
I still remember it to this day I think, 747.
oh yeahhhh wow!!!
@@MsAlliwannadoisdance wow, bravo. That’s dedication.
I got to the Green Dragon in DW, and suddenly remembered I never played Startropics. So here I am. Thanks for a kickass Saturday!
Fantastic walkthrough, my dude! I've played through this game a million times and I still learned some things from this. Also, pretty hilarious at times!
That's really high praise - Thank you so much!
That Picture in Picture of entering the trap room was amazing. I also remember this game requiring the manual that came with it to unlock the ship
I'll try to watch the complete BEST of playlist, this is my first video of the journey.
Amazing content, thank you UCBV
This was one of my favorite NES games...takes me back to Jr. High School.
U had me dying of laughter with the shaman holding a carrot part.
That was probably the best NES game ending I've ever seen!
This was COOL! Thank you for showing this off, I never got to see this entire game, it was hard as nails when I was a kid (and of course I lost the letter) but I still have the cartridge someplace
Thanks, Ian! This is one of my favorite games - glad you enjoyed it!
Sure Baboo is there to greet you at the end, but sadly the Pig didn't make it through the game...
Beating this game a few years ago on my NES Mini without the Game Genie made it all worth while.
I loved that game, one of the rare "tough NES games" that I actually beat as a kid. Loving this channel, well done mate!
Dude, this game’s story takes a BONKERS turn towards the end.
This is one of my favorite nes games ever
Ahh Startropics, some of the catchiest music (and lease sensical high score counters) on the entire NES. And our friends in Japan never really got to play it. And the chances of a third game in the series? I remain pessimisticola.
I'll … see myself out.
Your videos give me so much joy! These are games I loved as a kid. I remember literally dipping the letter that came with the game in water for one of the codes. It was awesome!
1:08:35 - I recently learned that if you jump back up there on the left (not the part where you’ll die but the left-most part) theres a secret area with some goodies
Interesting! It always seemed to me like they were hiding something there, I'll have to check it out next time I play through the Big Rock Tunnel.
Every time I hear the "God save the queen" theme during that ship sinking cutscene, I automatically substitute the words with the Royal Canadian Kilted Yaksman anthem.
Hehe, still remember some of the words to that song:
"Our country reeks of trees.
Our yaks are really large and
they smell like rotting beef carcasses."
@@MajorTeag "And we have to clean up after them,
And our saddle sores are the best,
We proudly wear women's clothing
And searing sand blows up our skirts."
"And the buzzards, they soar overhead,
And poisonous snakes will devour us whole,
And our bones will bleach in the sun.
And we will probably go to *PBBT*
And that is our great reward
For being the Royal Canadian Kilted Yaksmen."
@@BigAl1976 Hehe, yeah, I couldn't remember the second verse, but knew there was one.
Favorite Classic Gamer reviewer, favorite classic NES game. I think you made one of my favorite videos by default.
This is the game that taught me how to cus like a sailor.
this was one of the greatest NES games ever made, even the sequel was pretty damn good despite the hate it gets. i really wish they'd bring it back and make a whole new game. there used to be a website dedicated to making a third installment though i think it's defunct by now.
well i guess we know how the Dodo bird became extint now all thanks to Mike
Ha! Yeah we do!
@@UCanBeatVideoGames
Okay
Omg that code is exactly what screwed me when I was a kid..that's hilarious..I'm breaking this game back out from my collection..well done once again 🤘🏼🤙🏼
This is the best review of this fantastic game I've seen. Thanks for the closure here!
Your starting to grow on me. I appreciate the Enemy names and stills.
I remember this game! It was kind of scary when I was a kid and it was hard, especially when the lights go out and you have to remember where the squares are to jump on
I’ve never heard or seen this game. It looks great man!
I liked this game. I was only able to play it whenever my cousin came over since he owned it and despite never being able to beat Chapter 5, it was still a lot of fun.
I was one of the kids who played this and was turn off because of the first village.. looks like i need to go back and play this agian
Definitely worth a second look - this is one of my favorites! I don't really understand why they make you talk to everyone, most of them don't have anything interesting to say!
@@UCanBeatVideoGames I think in this case it's because you are playing as Mike, and canonically Mike talked to everyone lol
My brother and I played this game back in the day, it was really something. The movement alone making things rough but gosh, quite the story up there with the Final Fantasy games and a bit of Zelda.
Compared to its sequel, which gives you free movement (sometimes, too free), I kind of respect the grid system more than I thought I would.
Almost forgot how good the ending was in this game (best on the NES), indeed
It steals so much from Zelda but we never even knew it back then. We just had fun. Classic game.
Great Gameplay and Walkthrough.
You didn't show all the secrets, but you clearly didn't need them. ^^
Star Tropics is one of my NES-Favourites. 💖🏝
1:06:30 The stepladder from Zelda 1 would be very helpful here. :-D
Glad you enjoyed it! StarTropics is definitely one of my favorite NES games, too - probably in my top 10!
My dad and I beat this game when I was 9 years old. No Internet guides, no tips from friends because no one had this game... Just our own metal. It's an accomplishment I wouldn't mind framing one day 😉
Back in the day I remember Star Tropics was called: "Zelda's sister game"
The spaceship music sounds just like the mountains stage in crystalis. Just slightly different beats.
I'm a latecomer to this channel but I really love how in depth your videos are. Keep it going man!
As someone named Mike, I feel called out by this video. I'm a good swimmer damn it!
Thanks for all these videos man. I’ve binged watch your channel, so many good games and memories playing these dang things..
Super late to the party but this was one of the first games I ever played as a kid and it is still in my top 3 games of all time.
Love you dude...seen all your videos.. I'm on my second run thru ...star tropics one of my all time favorite
You really needed those Nintendo Power issues for this game. That is one of the reasons why StarTropics never really landed.
Yeah, I remember Nintendo Power really helping with the Ghost Tunnel. The room that looks like a dead end but you actually have to walk through the wall is very devious.
Ok I’ve now beaten Crystalis and Startropics this week using your guides. They are very well done. I’ve subscribed.
Two of my favorite hidden gems on the NES.
I forgot about all the pics of your achievements after you beat it. Mike Jones was a true American hero.
I played startropics 2 first. I eventually came back to this game and beat it as well. I suggest anyone play this first. The controls are so much smoother in 2. He does a good job making this look smooth.
