It's the color wheel. You didn't lift out your pink and purple. So when you added the dye, it turns black. Mixing all colors together primary ones and secondary, you get legit black. So the dye undertones had cooler blue, green, dash of red that's how you're going to get the brown it's varying amounts of this and so adding pink and purple to those is black, like you get when you mix all your paints together. Hope this helps you understand more why it came out this way. To prevent this: You must lift out your existing color as much as possible with a bleach bath (shampoo, bleach, 10 volume developer) or color stripper and then fill it with an orangey, dark warm toned level 7 blonde, then you can go ahead put on the neutral brown shade 1-2 shades lighter than you actually intend. :D
Girl same!!! Used the natural Ion in chestnut brown and my hair turned jet black with hints of navy blue LOL definitely had to wear makeup for a while.
i got medium chestnut brown and the same thing happened to me but some of my previously pink hair poked through so it just looks like highlights with a dark black color
I've used head and shoulders (I've heard it helps fade and strip out dye) and added highlights since and it looks a lot lighter. It's definitely brown now and not black
I just bought this hair dye, in the light honey brown, with the suggestion from the Sally's associate but then I read the reviews saying it turns your hair super dark. I'm exchanging it for Wella, which a hair stylist told me to use.
Yeah, I've had a few issues with ion and don't know why I keep going back.. I guess because I can always just dye my hair again. I've also used wella color charm. I think I used some blue greens and they turned out well!
Hey! I just dyed mine last night to the 2N natural darkest chestnut brown.. 😭 and it’s super black although i experienced the same thing where i bought 2 box dyes of the same hair color and one creme was light and the other was dark brown then mixing it, it became the actual color which in the photo almost looks black but it has a tint of brown. Besides head & shoulders, are there any other good shampoos and conditioners ?
I'm by no means an expert on hair color but im fairly sure that the number that is associated with the color relates to the color on the hair color scale. For example shade '3g', if you look up 'hair color scale chart' 3 is listed under black. I recently found this out so I hope this info can help someone else too!
I heard that ammonia free hair dyes typically show up 2 shades darker than the shade you choose so you have to go 2 shades lighter (a sally worker told me this so idk)
I tried out a darker shade out of that line and it came it super black with a blue tint...so I’m just curious, it’s been a month for you, did the darkness wash out?
@@patriciapearce8474 ok that sounds promising I’ll give it a little time then. I totally was about to pick up a color remover after work. Thanks for making this video
Nope, just use it as is and it should work on lightened hair! Usually I get an extra box or two to cover everything and occasionally will use a 10 developer just to make it more runny. The ion dyes tend to be thick and don't cover a ton of hair. Hope this helped!
20 developer is better for lightening your hair because it lifts and deposits color causing more damage usually whereas a 10 is best for darkening your hair and just deposits the color.

Pretty much any clarifying shampoo and conditioner should help lighten it but I usually use head and shoulders and pretty hot water.

Oh okay, I'll check that out next time I dye my hair. Thanks for the tip (:

The color does come out very dark, I wanted a light color now I have black hair LOL

It has lightened up but is a really dark brown still. I had some blonde added and my medium dark roots blended and im a lot happier with it.
@@patriciapearce8474 glad to hear it! Thank you for responding!
Hairspray removes hair color stains.
Awe man I just used this same dye and same thing happened to me. Did It ever lighten up ?
It did but it took a while. I ended up having a few highlights put in and liked it a lot better too

How did it turn out?
Why do u have 10 peroxide vs 20?

This was the dyes fault. This happend to mine too.
