    My reading is around Intermediate high, and my writing is pretty high as well. But my speaking is below a beginner😂I can pronounce really well and everything, but I get really nervous when speaking in Korean to others. I even forget everything I learned when someone starts talking to me in Korean, which leads to me not understanding them even though I most likely could if I wasn't so nervous. Texting is different, but in real life is a true struggle

    I lived in South Korea from 2012 - 2017 and considered myself a middle intermediate speaker/ Low advanced listener and a high beginner writer / low intermediate reader. I have opened bank accounts on my own, moved apartments, ordered takeout on the telephone, and politely declined many cold calling marketers on the phone. Taxi drivers have been genuinely surprised that I was not a native Korean upon arriving at my destination. These have been some of my proudest moments! I was still no where near as good as some foreigners I have seen conversing.

    I always say I wanna make my Korean level like my English level (english is not my first language) because I think I'm quite fluent at English. I think my level at English is high advanced & I'm fluent

      Just want to make two corrections💕
      "I want to make my Korean level as high as my English level" what you said was right but it sounds a little unnatural.
      "I think I'm fluent *in* English"
      "I think my English level is high advanced" sounds more natural
      These are some minor mistakes but it's always good to get better💕
      Good luck!!!!

    I like the way you broke this down! I was feeling unsure about my Korean speaking level because as you said the Topik does not aligned automatically with your speaking ability. However in my case I guess it actually did. According to your scale and Topik I am intermediate low. I can understand the gist of conversations even if their are many people talking. But most of the time I cannot express myself the way I want to. I'm overly conscious about using certain grammar correctly. I think until I get comfortable with making mistakes , I'm going to be stuck here for a while haha. But progress is progress.

    I actually had a bit of memory lane of learning English when you explained the levels and it's so true. I am extremely fluent at English and at home I do not even have an foreign accent anymore but in public.... I get nervous so I get tense and a slight accent comes out and sometimes have to "dumb down" my words and it's the most frustrating thing to not be able to shine at my normal ability level. But, since I know the journey from before I feel so chill and relaxed with the Korean. :) I enjoy it (language studying) way more this second time around!

    Thanks for the video! This was really helpful in clarifying my level of Korean and also my Spanish as well. I know it doesn't matter too much, but staying conscious of my level and abilities helps me to know where I am and what to study next. I've been struggling with whether to call myself beginner high or intermediate low in Korean, but according to your system I feel more confident saying intermediate low. And your clarification about feeling uncomfortable even at the intermediate high/advanced low level was super helpful, too! My Spanish is pretty decent - probably advanced low - but I still almost ALWAYS feel uncomfortable while speaking it. I felt like I shouldn't feel that way but it's good to know that it's normal even at a high level to feel that discomfort!

I call myself low intermediate, but I'm still really struggling with fluency because of confidence issues. I can't just relax and say something in an easier way. Okay so it's been 6 months since I study Korean and I can't believe that my speaking level is super duper close to high intermediate. Okay guys this is what I'm going to tell you, don't rush in learning this language. Before I used to think why I can't speak all I studied.
    Tip #1: don't think when you speak just like speaking in your native language, feel that the language is yours.
    Tip #2 : don't compare yourself to others. We are all different.
    Tip #3: Find a way how it will be more easier for you to learn korean.

    by watching Korean dramas/ variety shows and listening to music/ podcasts for the past 2 years, my understanding i would say is high advanced ( i took the talk to me in Korean test and it said i was advanced and recommended that i take the level 9 lessons (which is the highest level they offer)), im pretty confident in understanding most complex subject specific topics. However i can not write or speak, this might sound weird but since ive never studied or spoken in Korean my writing, reading and speaking is all beginner level. i was actually pretty shocked that my understanding was that high when ive never actively tried to study Korean lol. Hey Billy! This reminds me of ACTFL (American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages) levels. They split it into low, mid, and high for each level. They also give descriptions from each level and each function (speaking, reading, listening, writing). They don't have Korean levels yet sadly, but they do have English descriptions.

    • @GoBillyKorean
      @GoBillyKorean  5 лет назад

      Yes, ACTFL is another useful one since it includes speaking in the test. But I've found some of the results to vary greatly depending on the person who's grading you - if you're entertaining to talk to you can get a higher score than someone who might actually speak more fluently than you, or vice versa. The benefit is having an actual speaker to grade your conversation skills, but that can also be a downside.

    Billy, I have a question: what do you consider a 'basic conversation'? How far does it go? Introduction, hobbies, ...what else?
    Help please it's not that important I know but you use it so often in your videos...

    • @GoBillyKorean
      @GoBillyKorean  5 лет назад +1

      Anything could be a basic conversation, if you're actually able to talk with a Korean. If you understand nothing and can't say anything you want, then that's not. If you can ask about the weather, understand their reply, and say thanks, and it wasn't just memorized phrases then that's a conversation. If you tell someone what you're doing, and can understand what they're replying to you, and can then reply to that - that's also a conversation. If you ask someone what they're doing but can't understand even if they use a basic vocabulary word (think what are basic words in English, like "I'm studying" or "I'm swimming") then that's not a basic conversational level.

    이 영상을 만들어주셔서 넘 감사합니다 빌리님 찐자 잘 봤습니당~~ 근데 솔직히 개인적으로, 말하기가 젤 쉽고 편할 것 같은데.... 예를들어 만약에 한국어 아시는분들과 얘기하면서 잘 모르는 화제나 나오면 아직도 편하게 얘기할 수 있어여 ....근데 제 실력은 그렇게 높지 않아요 ㅋㅋㅋㅋ 솔직히 한국 책을 읽어보면 끝까지 못읽을 것 같아용 아직도 그렇게 부족하고든요 찐자큰일이죠ㅋㅋㅋ 누가봐도 책도 못읽은 사람은 고급만큼 높은급이면 안되니까 제 레벨 어떻게 결정할수있어용ㅜㅜㅜ 제 생각을 거의 항상 맘대로 표현할수있고 영화나 한국 유튜브를 보면 원래 100-70% 이해할수있어요... 글고 교포이니까 제 발음이 찐자 괜찮다.. 그런데도 고급이면 찐자 안돼죠... 너무 헷갈룡 도와주세용 ㅠㅠㅠ

    Anyone got ideas on how to stay motivated learning korean on your own? Recently I’ve realized that I’ve been studying korean for almost a year now and I’m still not really intermediate (which is really sad). I didn’t really study regularly and intensively as I wanted to do. That was because of the lack of my motivation since it’s very hard for me to really continue studying because things get very difficult. Soooo any ideas ? I’m thankful for any answer (:(

    • @adrenalineliberation
      @adrenalineliberation 5 лет назад +1

      I find studying by myself to be next to impossible because I get distracted easily and think there are no consequences if I don't so I don't do it as regularly as I should. Classroom settings are really the best in my opinion

    • @adrenalineliberation
      @adrenalineliberation 5 лет назад +1

      Try to find a someone who is also learning Korean or incentives to help keep you on it. I find having someone else who is learning talking to them about what I learned or listening to them reinforces it and they also hold me accountable so I'm less likely to slack off

      Every time I realise I'm not learning anything new for a while, I try to remember why I'm learning Korean, what I can achieve with it and how much time I've spent on this, I don't want to feel like I've wasted so much time so I don't give up and try to change something about my learning method or sources that I use. It's important to enjoy studying, that's how you stay motivated. Keep going, 화이팅 ❤
      (English is not my first language so sorry if I made some mistakes)

      It takes a lot longer than a year to get fluent, especially in a setting where you don’t get to use it on other people

    • @byunTAEuP
      @byunTAEuP 5 лет назад +3

      Hun, you're probably doing okay! Don't worry. A year isn't a long time in the larger scheme of things. (Recall that children spend years immersing themselves in the language before actually being able to communicate in a way everyone can understand them.) Find a study buddy! This way not only will you have someone pushing you to do your studies but a great support system. I could help with that, if you'd like.) Anddd not sure if you already have Amino downloaded but there's a great page dedicated to learning the language. Super helpful since there's a number of people there who are serious about learning Korean.

    According to your scale, I would be high beginner level. I don’t know many words or phrases, but I can understand them when I hear them and read them, and I know how to speak/read/write basic words and phrases like 안녕하세요. 저는 레나입니다. 만나서 팡갑습니다. I might be able to understand their responses, but I’ve gotten rusty with studying.

    I found my level. It was in the drawer next to the tape measure. Haha. Also why do you pronounce it 토픽? It's Test of Proficiency in Korean. I think it's originally an english word, so the english pronunciation is fine.

      Christopher Taylor as in the English pronouncation? In that case that’s strange.. every Korean I’ve talked to has called it 토픽. Weird! But that also call TOEFL AND TOEIC 토플 and 토익 so it might just be because it’s similar to that.

    I think I'm almost high intermediate. I feel your description of high intermediate is slightly above my level but low intermediate is definetly below. I often get de-motivated these days because if I wanna say something I have to simplify it so much I can not really say it's my full opinion anymore. I'm 34 years old and like talking about politics and social events in English or my mother tongue Swedish. But in Korean I can't talk about these things and I'm not interested in kpop and other juvenile things that are easier to talk about. This results in that I speak less and when I do speak it's extremely frustrating. Sigh... ㅠㅠ

    I agree with TOPIK not being the ideal way to assess your actual abilities when it comes to actually speaking Korean. I passed TOPIK level 2 quiet easily after about 7-8 months of learning Korean at university, but if there was a speaking section my results would definitly have been worse...
