Thank you for this! This is the best explanation I've ever heard!! After 2 years of feeling lost when it comes to particles, I finally feel like I have a grasp on them.
you said "after 2 years"...Thanks Jessig 0219. I've been studying Korean now for 2 and a half years and this still tricks me up. I thought after 2 years and still not sure ,it had to be me. Good to know I'm not alone om this. I know you are doing so many things now Billy but this video is gold. thank you as well.
Girl, you didn't understand particles for 2 years...I have been learning Korean for 2 months now and couldn't grasp the concept of particles, I thought I was behind..Glad to know it's common
Many students subscribe to the theory of only having a native (born) teacher. I myself have taken numerous classes with Korean teachers; however, because of language or cultural differences, they cannot always answer my questions. This is never a problem with Billy, since he has already traveled the road we are just now starting on, he understands (and sometimes predicts) our questions. And, unlike many other professional RUclipsrs, he frequently responds to comments, adding additional insight. 선생님 고맙습니다.
Exactly! Sometimes its better to hear from someone who speaks your native language explain how they learned a concept of another language. There are just ways we say things that explain a concept better. Like this video was so clear compared to videos on this topic explained by a native korean speaker.
this was the best explanation for English speakers, but now the real question, Will Kyra remember when it comes time to use it? The world may never know
Being a Korean myself, this is something I have never thought of before. I am sure not many Koreans have unless they are linguists. But, yes, his explanation is quite accurate. This video will be of much help to those who study Korean. 한국사람으로서 이건 내가 한번도 생각해본 적이 없는 문제인데, 생각해보니 꽤 정확한 이야기인 것 같아요. 한국어를 공부하는 사람들에게 이 동영상은 큰 도움이 될 것 같아요.
The distinction between 은 and 이/가 as a change in the conversational topic helps a lot. I think the 'as for/when it comes to' phrase will be really helpful in remembering
This is honestly THE best video about particles I’ve ever watched. The 이/가 vs 은/는 section was explained beautifully, you really hit the nail out of my head. Thank you, Sir!
Wow, excellent! As a Korean American who began learning Japanese with an American textbook, I really had a hard time distinguishing between “Wa” and “Ga” which is exactly same as the Korean “Neun,” and “Ga” which is described as a topic marker and subject marker respectively. Only when I learned Japanese with a Korean textbook that I truly understand its meaning and application. Things I realized about learning a foreign language is that when you can “feel” it, it is very easy to understand and memorize. For instance, everyone knows what feels to be “hot, cold, hurt, happy” and so on. But something abstract that require analysis, such as topic marker and subject marker, it will take a long time to understand fully. I applaud the teacher for making this difficult topic much easier to understand.
this was so helpful! I actually asked my korean professor how to differentiate between 이/가 and 은/는 because I seriously couldn't understand it at all but this explanation made it clear thank you
OH MY GOD. You're really good at this. I am learning from korean teachers and still can't understand this. Even though I am in intermediate level, it's still difficult to understand. And it ruins the whole thing if we did these wrong. However, you just explained it very well. Even better than natives I would say.
i’ve been learning korean (seriously) since april of this year, and i’ve been introduced to the idea of 은/는 & 이/가 many times, but it was still a little confusing. this is the first time i’ve completely understood the difference between the two.. your examples & visualization helped so much😭 thank you! 감사합니다! 🫶🏽
Honest review: I'm not fond of your style of teaching in your other videos, sometimes it's to fast and there are times that it's not beginner friendly, BUT , I have seen a lot of videos ezplaining these particles, I would say this is the best so far. Excellent 👌
Like many other commenters, I have read and watched countless resources on particles and just ended up so confused my brain hurt haha. You broke them down into simple terms and simple sentences. I finally feel like it's starting to make sense to me. I will definitely be sharing this video if I see anyone else needing help with them. Thank you so much for your videos!!
OMG, I just found this today and the light went on. I've been going crazy trying to find an explanation of the difference between a topic and a subject and you finally said it clearly. I've written notes in all the books I've been using, just to remind me as I continue to learn. THANK you so much!
This strangely makes a lot of sense and no sense at all.😂 I think I'm slowly starting to understand particles a little better which is both exciting and a little scary. Thank you so much for this!❤️ The topic marker example made so much sense!
I found that just writing a sentence in English, then putting a particle underneath the English word really helped me to understand. Weird technique, but it kinda worked.
I was pulling my hair out trying to understand the differences between the topic and subject-marking particles- this is literally the first time I’ve actually understood!!!!! Thank you!!!
I love that concept about picturing an imaginary sign when it comes to Topic marking particles. Now i use it whenever I have trouble figuring out a sentence, it has been so helpful!
I didn’t even understand why RUclips brought me here though I am Korean already.... anyway let alone 은/는 being a topic marker, what a non Korean speaker should bear in mind is that you are setting EXPECTATION by saying 은/는 to some extent to the listeners in the conversation. If you just say “김치는 tastes good”, people will be like “???”. That is because people unconsciously or consciously expected YOU to say something different. It is kinda like English speaker expect “but...?” when one suddenly says something. For example, “alright. This is good” >> listeners will be like “and..?” Or “but...?”. So don’t overuse it unless you have something different to talk about.
This is the best explanation I've seen so far. I was struggling to understand. Now I going to go back on sentences I didn't understand to apply this to.
Wow it really does take practice. This is one of the few videos of teachers that explains 은 는 이 가 well. Thank You so much, now I'm getting the hang of 은 는 이 가.
This is far and away the very best explanation of the topic & subject marking particles thatI have ever seen. EVERY teacher should be using that analogy of having a sign over your head. Brilliant.
I’ve been subscribed for a while and I just have to say I love love love how you explain Korean. I don’t even know why I’m just watching this now. I’m so encouraged to keep learning and Can’t wait to go watch the rest.
Wow, the 'sign above your head' analogy is so simple but completely changed my way of thinking. It really clarified 은/는 and 이/가 in a different way for me, i feel like when I practise now ill be able to feel the nuance more
THANK YOU. I'm new to the Korean language and these markers threw me for a loop for a hot second. I watched a few other videos to try to get a better grasp on the topic, but yours is the one that really made me understand how to use the three sets of markers!
I've watched a lot of different videos on these markers over the last few days, all by native Korean speakers. Your explanation just made it all so much clearer. Great video!
I am currently doing my challenges in learning Korean and I don't really know when will I use 은/는, 이/가, 을/를. I watched lots of videos but none of them teach when or how you will use them. Thanks to this man and he enlighten me! I JUST SUSBCRIBED AND LIKE THE VIDEO! I'LL WATCH MORE OF YOUR VIDEOS. Thanks again!~
Billy stands for being emphatic teacher especially to those non-native Korean speakers. I now understand the role of these markers after very long time. OMO! Thank you so much!!!! 😊😊😊
Oh MY GOSH! Few weeks ago you helped me with pronunciation of 'ㄹ', my tongue literally didn't want to cooperate and now with 은/는 and 이/가. 100% efficiency
I am taking a moment to appreciate you the way you explained I was just on object marker and hell yeah I got the hang of it because of !thankyou❤ Edit:watched the full video and can't thank enough 😭For the clear explanation
Thank youuuuuuu!!! I couldn't find a better explanation than this one, now I understand the mistakes in my Korean homework. Maybe if I had watched this video two weeks ago, I would never have understood these topics. Thanks!!
Finally a video that actually explains CLEARLY what the differences are 😭 Every other explanation I've read/watched sounds good on the surface until I actually stop to process it or try to use it, I'm back at square one hahaha
