I talked about these questions and more with my friend Sofie, a fluent Korean speaker from Denmark who learned Korean by herself through self-studying. She shares how she became fluent, and gives some great tips for how you can reach fluency in Korean.

You guys are both so inspiring! And for those who want to see Sofie speaking Korean at 2 different points of time (one year apart) so you can observe her progress, I am posting the link down below. BTW a little story on the later video: I got so many hate emails from Koreans for speaking 반말 to her, the way I talk to her off camera ^^;;

She's such an articulate and well-versed speaker, in English definitely but in Korean as well. I agree with all the tips she shared, especially spending even a small fraction of time every day learning new vocabs or forming sentences by yourself. Thank you for bringing Sofie in! And I have to say, I'm very impressed as a native Korean speaker that both of you worked so hard and were able to become this fluent. Korean sure is not easy to learn as a foreign language, especially for Western language speakers, but you guys did it. Kudos for that! I also hope to do a collab video with you someday, Billy! (:
I just started Korean class last week and I have majority of the alphabet down. I just sounded out the Hangul in your name and realized it's Vicky spelled in Korean. Lol I know I'm slow with it but I was so excited that I could sound it out!

she is great on camera. Completely comfortable and charming, something that few people can do well. I hope she continues to do little discussions with the Korean learning channels like Go Billy, Motivate Korean, Spongemind TV and TTMIK even if she doesn't make her own channel. I am always inspired by other non native speakers who have achieved a comfortable level of fluency.
actually i used all the techniques you guys talked about when i was first learning english....without knowing they were language learning techniques because i was 11/12 :o especially forcing myself to think in english really helped me! i would recommend to start doing that early on in your language learning process, you can replace words you dont know yet with words in your native language or simplify what you want to see (or better: look up a new word that you really want to know). if you start early it will come more natural to you later 🌱

I'm just a few lessons in with Intermediate I Korean and feel no where near fluent. But like Billy said: If you don't put in the time with "hard' work then expectations should reflect that. Hard work, I do for hours but *sigh* number of times per week - not so much. Thanks to both of you for the tips. I know they will help.
As far as K-dramas, I found "Hello My Twenties" to be great for hearing and comprehending, especially for beginners. A lot of the early textbook vocab was in it. (roommates , food, drink, college campus, public transportation, dating, friendships, studying, exams, jobs etc)
Start a RUclips! I'd love to get as many tips as possible from a variety of people learning/ or fluent in Hangul.
I started following Sofie's blog starting 2016 or so, and I have to say that I learn a lot on her every post. I consider myself an intermediate learner, so I will follow all the tips you guys shared! Hope that I could be as fluent as both of you someday! :)

If I were listening to Sofie without knowing her background, I'd think she's a native English speaker. I keep forgetting how well some Europeans are taught English! Her Korean is a whole other level. Forgot how I first heard about her (probably TTMIK), but very interesting Denmark-to-Korea transition and impressive fluency level! 수고해셨습니다 소희!

The fact that Sofie is not even a native English speaker and yet can speak like one and is yet, additionally also fluent in Korean is so impressive to me.
Then I remember that English is not my native language either. And _then_ I remember that my Korean could not be further from fluency haha so I still really can't compare myself even slightly.

I used to take the train 1 hr each way for work. I used that time every day to study Korean and was able to communicate pretty well when I visited Seoul last year.
Great video. I subscribed to this channel because it's so good! Quick question- how did you go about getting better at forming longer/complex sentences? For example, it's easy to say something simple like "그 남자는 멍멍이를 좋아해요" but when it comes time to add more details, it becomes really hard to figure out on the spot. Evolving the above sentence to something like "그 남자는 멍멍이를 나쁘게 대하는 사람을 싫어해요" takes me a LONG time to figure out how to say. How did you push past that? It just took me nearly 2 minutes to figure out how to write that sentence, heh.

I do a lot of these things but it's always good to remember I'm on the right track. I've also made little tunes when I learn new words or phrases... they get really stuck in my head. I can't stop hearing the song I made for 사랑헤요 playing in my head... haha
I haven't got very far into learning Korean yet but now I find I can hear individual words in K-Dramas and understand some of them. It's definitely worth watching them to get your ear in. I was on holiday in Oslo and heard some Koreans and went up and said, 'annyeonghaseyo'.. The lady I spoke to was surprised and happy to meet me so don't be afraid to make contact and give it a go. Thanks both you. What I would like to know is if an old form of Korean is used in historical dramas as we would use in British historical dramas.

Oh, anyone know of fluent speakers that learned through lessons but were not fortunate enough to spend extended time immersed while Korea?
I like the 5 minute think in Korean tip. I am going to give it a try. You hear all the time - learn to think in the language! But who can, or would really want to, just switch their brain all into Korean all the time? But if you just say do it for 5 minutes at a time then it's doable and maintainable as a habit I think? Granted I haven't tried this but I'm commenting right away. And I'll be using a timer on my phone - I don't want to force myself to think in a language I'm terrible at too much.

I have been lagging behind lately and when you said, "if you don't want to study Korean not very much right now, then don't beat yourself up if you're not learning it!" I have failed at prioritizing! OMG HOW THE HELL DO YOU FIND KOREAN CAPTIONS. I've been dying to have that cause it has helped me SO MUCH in learning other languages, but I can't for the love of me find a way to watch Korean content with Korean subtitles. I don't know about dramas, but o RUclips, I've been watching these café videos and cooking videos in Korean and the ones I have seen have Korean subtitles.

Am from Lithuanien live in Denmark, can speak English, learning Dutch in school and wanna learn Korean
I know this is an older video, but for anyone tuning in, if you don't need your phone in a business setting, setting your phone to Korean is really helpful to force yourself to learn new vocabulary & grammar on a daily basis. New pop-up? Let's see what grammar & words I can understand, otherwise add the grammar & words on your list of things to learn. I set my phone very early and it was a pain at first even navigating through settings, but over time you start to recognize more and more things. And unlike Chinese or Japanese, you don't need to know the characters or try to guess from radicals, you can just search the new word in a dictionary. Highly recommend!

I can relate to what they were saying about listening to another language even if you don't understand it just to get your "ear" accustom to it.
My native language is french but I started listening to English TV programs (mostly news) since I was 3 or 4 years old, by the time I got to English class in primary school I was already way ahead of everyone else and had nothing to learn for a few years.
I'm doing the same thing with the Korean language in hope I can learn it the same way as I did with English.

Loved this video! But i have to say the best thing I ever did to improve my Korean is to put my phone in Korean, I changed all the settings and it helped so much. Don't get me wrong I get confused every so often, especially in the beginning, but it helped my vocabulary so much and helped me to become extremely familiar with the language since every time I looked down at my phone it was all Korean.
It's hard to get a Korean language partner since they never stay long or make it a one sided thing, from the ones I meet so far anyway which is kind of a turn off.

How to be fluent in Korean?
Step 1: Watch dramas multiple times
Me: Say no more fam.

These are all techniques I found very useful when I was learning French, glad to see it’s helpful for Korean as well!

3:10 CRAP, I feel so much better that my Korean sucks now. Haha. One of the goals of learning Korean is to converse well with my father in-law but his strong Daegu accent (or perhaps just older gentleman accent? lol) is so hard to understand even if he's saying something basic that I'd normally understand from someone younger speaking more clearly for me. I don't feel so bad anymore. Thanks! haha Perhaps I'm not so bad at Korean as I thought.

I'm still studying Hangul and I'm hung up on pronouncing letters correctly and memorizing the changes to letter sounds at the end of a word or syllable block. I started learning 3 years ago at first I was learning so fast but then a personal tragedy and the pandemic knot me out of track. I'm trying to recover for all the time that I lost but it's challenging and keep saying to myself that I can do it. I think living in Germany as a kid (my Mom took me home with her when my Dad was stationed on a remote base for a year) and going to German school got my brain to think in another language. I still speak German fluently. I think fluent for me is being able to speak without pre-thinking what I about to speak. Like when playing guitar. At first you look at your fingers to play chords but to be a fast/better player you have to be able to place your fingers Without Looking.

I really like Sophie's approach! There is really nothing between you and korean learning (or anything else that you may want to do) other than just discipline and your own willingness to do stuff. I would also add having a strong enough reason to keep you motivated and on the right track... If you want to learn korean just for the sake of learning it, it will be more difficult than if you wanted to do it because you want to live in Seoul because you love that city so much.

I absolutely agree with learning in the native language. I've been a teacher for years and swear by it. I'd like to add a tip for those who are studying korean. Put yourself in a situation where you'd HAVE TO use both korean and your native language/ English. I'm teaching english to koreans and I have to use korean even though I'm BUSY (literally working from morning till I go to bed) and I've noticed how much korean I'm learning while teaching! It's a win-win thing.
and Sofie, I think you'd be a great inspiration if you start a youtube channel :)
