  • At Stillwater Dwellings, we’re proud to share the story of Susan Weber’s custom prefab home in the scenic hills of Santa Ynez, California. Susan and her husband chose to leave behind colder climates, seeking a home that would allow them to enjoy the warmth and beauty of California year-round. As a lifelong horse enthusiast, Susan dreamed of a place where she could keep her horses close and enjoy a strong connection between indoor and outdoor spaces. When traditional architecture proved too costly, Susan found Stillwater Dwellings and immediately felt at ease with our process and our team.
Together, we crafted a layout tailored to her vision, including open spaces with extensive glass to bring in natural light and panoramic views, and a separate ADU to provide privacy for guests. Throughout the project, we worked closely with Susan to bring every detail to life, delivering a stress-free experience that surpassed her expectations. Now, her stunning home blends beautifully with the landscape and challenges perceptions of what a prefab home can be. Susan shares that visitors are often surprised to learn her home is panelized-it’s that well-integrated and refined. Today, she enjoys her peaceful home as she continues her work with horses and her nonprofit, fulfilling her dream of a life grounded in nature and purpose. We’re honored to have helped Susan create a space she truly loves.

These new prefab companies that have cropped up lately intrigued me as the idea is so simple: Buy land, hire prefab company with the home needing to just be “connected”, have them do all the permits and regulations…and get it all done faster and cheaper.
Well, it became clear to me that choosing this route takes just as much time as building from scratch, the permit process often takes longer…and it is actually MORE expensive than new build…

so in the end did it come in < 1k per sq ft..including garages, site prep, permits, landscaping etc. it seems like you can't know what it costs to build until you are done even with prefab or panelized :-(

How long did it take to "design" and build?

Our Stillwater is currently in the process of being built. We began discussing designs May 2023, however, there were some short delays due to county permits, well digging and testing, environmental, etc. All in all, the process has been very smooth with good communication and Zoom meetings with the Stillwater team. BTW-everything in their basic designs can be customized to your liking (we definitely did change some things). I chose them because I'm a fan of their Midcentury look and modern aesthetic. They are very thorough and detailed and work well with our contractor company (they had experience building another Stillwater before). I'll have to report back when our home is finished next year.

Too far from civilisation for me. I don't get why people want to be so isolated, other than, they just want to not be here with PEOPLE
