I was sent by me a friend to restore an old pencil sharpener, the first time I saw it, very interesting, it was rusty, I wanted to restore it as it was at the beginning, the manufacturer made it. is Boston. I think it was made in the 1940s. I want to restore and give it back to my niece who is in 3rd grade. My nephew will use it to sharpen a pencil for painting.

Love this sharpeners. Also, I think you’re turning it the wrong direction.

Thank you for not faking your videos. There are so many out there that fake finding their builds in the trash and mud. You are one of the few who makes genuine RUclips restoration videos.

My father was deputy principal of a primary school, in the school there was a huge room full of filing cabinets, metal institutional furniture and a box with these rusty pencil sharpeners collecting dust, there would be at least 20 and lots of loose parts.

When I was a boy every classroom had a Pencil Sharpener like this mounted to the
wall at the head of the class.

Our teacher had it mounted on his desk, and you got mocked if you had to sharpen your pencil during class - you were supposed to do that in between classes.

the students of today may think it is a useless toy. but Mr NVC DIY proves that it is actually a piece of art. thumbs up.

What would make one of these... start to not sharpen good anymore and make it hard to get a good point on the pencil and then break the point when you get close to a good point?

Very nice restoration. Our teacher had one mounted to his desk, but it was a "luxury" model 'cause the middel section was leather wrapped, and the side caps were chromed. Very fancy. lol

You grounded away the burrs on the cutters. Dull cutters sounds like that with lots of shreds hanging off tip. Should cut like a plane. Body was chrome, back a ceramic gray coating. But, looks ok

For me as I remember it... in my school days oh so long ago... is that the metal part of the handle is Chrome.... outer sides are Chrome... middle strip is coloured or also chrome. Inside part is steel polished. So it should all be shiney... :-)
They were awesome to use... and a great way to get out of doing lessons for a few minutes to stand there and sharpen the long pencil down to almost nothing.. as you turned the handle.. ;-)
But I do like your sandblasting.. :-)

nice work, however I think you should have gone for the original look. When I can get them, these, in decent original condition, bring pretty good money on Ebay. Never ever saw one done in black. Usually, the base was that silvery "Hammerite" finish, the two sides were chrome or nickel plated, and the middle portion of the catch thing was in what I can only call a deep red.

    • @tootall5559
      @tootall5559 4 года назад

Some were all chrome except for the base, they were almost always the Hammerite finish

Great restoration, Boston was the standard in it's day. Still have one like that in my shop for about 50 years now works great . Love your vids, keep up the good work. Thanks and stay safe.

Everything is well done, but the result of sharpening pencils is unsatisfactory. Such a stenochka should sharpen pencils much more accurately, there should be a smooth clean surface and no skew.

I have an old Boston pencil sharpener almost like that one. Instead of the rotary size selector it has a spring loaded set of grabbers that adjust to the pencil diameter. Otherwise it should restore the same as yours. Too bad I don't have a sand blaster.

Так себе реставрация,смысл что всё выкрасил,точит-то вообще никак.В первую очередь тех.исправность реставрируемой вещи,а потом уже эстетика.А такая реставрация-это только потраченное время.
