Andy gives us a masterclass in acting in this scene. Guy is stuck lying in bed, he only has his face to emote with and he just absolutly kills it. Every layer of emotion Alfred goes through in this scene from relief, hurt, anger, joy, you can see reflected through his eyes. And credit to Robert as well, playing this shell of a man whose spent a lifetime trying to burry his emotions, now having those emotions try to rise and break through his barrier. A key example of how excellent this movie is and really shoudl be the gold standard for what modern superhero films should strive to be.
@@somecallmejeremyimo, I love the ambiguity. It just adds this layer of tragic simplicity. Whether it was organized crime or just unfortunate timing, it’s still devastating for Alfred and Bruce
Fate killed Batman's parents. And the Authors/Writers of the comics are masters of Fate here in Batman. So technically, the Writers are the killers. They *had* Bruce's parents killed. Comic Book history mostly states "Joe Chill" killed them, but the main purpose was to ignite the greatest fuel for the fire that is Batman. Without their deaths, there is no Batman. And with no Batman, there is no Joker. I would go as far as to say if Bruce's parents survived, perhaps Gotham would have been villainless as Thomas Wayne was in the process of overhauling the judicial and legislative systems, but who knows and who cares. He dead and we have psycho Batman playing chase and detain every night.
I was worried about them going the full "Bad Waynes" route so this subversion about it being a a desperate and botched attempt to help those Thomas loved was great.
I definitely agree. It was the right move to portray the Waynes as good people with good intentions, who were held back by a corrupt society and mental health issues that people wouldn't understand/accept from people of their status. It shows that while Bruce _could_ try to dismantle the corruption from within, it's very likely that he could be stopped like his parents were, and therefore justifies why he has to be Batman. If the Waynes aren't worthy of being avenged, then the concept of The Batman would collapse.
Yea, I never liked the concept of making Bruce's parents full on villains or corrupt. I prefer them actually being Good people. Saints? Not that either. But good people with moral values, yes. And if those people made mistakes or actions with good intent, but that just played out and resulted differently, then I can accept that too, and it even makes for a better story. Bruce realizing that some criminals aren't morally bankrupt, and sometimes people do bad or questionable things out of love or trying to do right by others. Makes Bruce question and analyze the crime in Gotham even more.
In my headcanon the waynes historically couldve been bad, hence why they are/were so wealthy, but it was Thomas who decided to break the cycle and use the wealth they amassed to do good by the people of gotham, sonething which unfrotunately did not sit well with the other elites of gotham, hence why they put a hit on him.
This is personally a perfect representation of how a traumatized “stoic” person acts. It’s not like Michael Corleone, it’s not like “insert any other badass stoic character.” He’s strange, he’s clearly sensitive, he clearly has connectivity issues, and he feels awkward. He has unresolved trauma, he has severe connection issues, and he thinks he’s being strong but he’s just off putting to save himself the trouble of losing someone again. He is blind to obvious answers because he cannot connect, he cannot understand, he just needs to be “justified.” It’s an emotional look that has been sorely forgotten about when adapting Bruce.
Really this is the gold standard of modern day comic book movies matt reeves was very successful in delivering the emotions on screen when i watched this movie on big screen i felt every single emotion that matt has trying to make us feel like this scene and the selena and falcone's relation. without telling a word, this was brilliant
A touching moment between Bruce and Alfred from any incarnation is always a top tier scene stealer. Even if the story is not strong enough, this will boost it up with massive points!
This was the moment that sealed the deal for me. That Robert Pattinson wasn't just a great Batman, but a phenomenal Bruce Wayne. That vulnerability, that scared child that hid behind a mask, the man who could only share his true self with Alfred. Probably the best scene in the film.
I love this scene because this is one of the rarest moments that Bruce and Alfred had heart to heart conversation and facing the tragedy that they both were reluctant to bring up.
@@InjusticeJoshMaybe JOKER (2019) is secretly a prequel to The Batman (2022) where after Arthur Fleck’s Joker dies, this will soon give rise to THE JOKER fulfilling his legacy.
The beauty of this scene is the idea that there’s always something we don’t know, no matter what the situation is.. The fact that they leave the Wayne’s death a mystery while also laying out the idea that it very well could’ve been Falcones doing is truly brilliant. Matt Reeves adds a whole new layer of depth to the character of Bruce Wayne
We didn’t get to see much of Bruce Wayne. More of Batman which makes sense but I would love to see the man of Batman if that makes sense. Maybe when they do the court of owls.
I really thought he was going to pull his hand away and we'd see he returned the cufflinks and so we knew Bruce acknowledged Alfred as a Wayne and his family.
I finally got to see this movie recently Left me with some questions I heard Batman doesn't kill in this movie but in final fight it looked like one or two of those Riddlers were killed and someone definitely had to have died in that car chase right? If not talk about really good fortune
@@geordiemc4571 But at the same time one could argue Batman knew a high speed chase could lead to something bad happening. Probably would have been better to just not chase him.
@@MrWolfchamp-xi3cu but then Selina and Gordon would have been killed by penguin and his men? The whole car chase happened cause Batman had to get their attention off Gordon and Selina
@@MrWolfchamp-xi3cuTrue, but remember at this point in the movie he wasn't exactly a good person. He was more concerned with inflicting pain on criminals as revenge and was apathetic toward civilians. This is why he didn't show any care toward the man who was attacked at the subway, didn't show any sympathy to Selina when she was grieving for her friend, and obviously didn't give af about the people on the road. Toward the end of the film he realized how harmful that behavior is and how it's counterintuitive to what The Batman should stand for.
Despite him being revealed as a backstabbing liar and manipulator, I don't think that Carmine Falcone had both Thomas and Martha Wayne killed by Joe Chill. I still think that the Court of Owls is somehow responsible and might hopefully make an appearance in either THE PENGUIN 2024 show or in the next movie.
This scene kinda epitomizes my biggest issue with this film. Even here, in what seems to be attempting to be the movie's most emotional scene, the movie lacks in emotional resonance for me. This problem is even more apparent to me given what I was expecting from Matt Reeves, who bowled me over emotionally with his Planet of the Apes films in a franchise that I have nowhere close to the emotional investment in that I do in the Batman franchise. This film is style over substance, and that style is so cool, but Batman & Robin was able to infuse more emotion into Bruce and Alfred's relationship despite being surrounded by camp than this film was. I love Pattinson as Batman and am still waiting to render judgment on his Bruce until we get a movie with more of Pattinson outside the cape and cowl, but his Bruce performance in this particular scene isn't great, so that doesn't help either.
Man stop all that and enjoy the movie, people like u kill me. Stop trying to act like u saying something so deep and profound, we don't need all that bruh u doing too much
That's the point, his Bruce is young and angry and traumatized, and he doesn't want to get attached, which is why he tried to shield off his emotions and master them. But when Alfred got hurt he showed he cared.
Ngl it is a strange choice for Bruce to be super moody, when bales bruce was sad and frustrated u felt it, not much here and not sure why they chose that
@billross9132 Well, because he's young and angry and traumatized after losing his parents. I guess the reason why you didn't feel it the way I or others did was because they showed his trauma than just telling us.
