Having explored Buddhism and Christianity, I found that being humble, grateful for what you have and making yourself useful to humanity are central to spirituality and true happiness
Oh dear. Haemin has been widely discredited in South Korea as a hypocrite, after preaching minimalist life and mental well-being thru charitable life. But it was later found out that he was actually living a luxurious life, expensive homes in Seoul, owning Ferrari etc and running multiple lucrative businesses potentially exploiting mentally vulnerable people etc. All fine and good if he was a typical everyday person trying it big but he is a self-titled 'buddhist' monk. He's more like a business person, not a monk. To mildly put he is no longer popular in South Korea and disregarded. Maybe he's extending his 'business' in Western countries.
Omg!....that is giving a bad name on buddhist monks....and really bad bad karma for himself, as a monk...compared to a lay person doing the same thing without wearing the robe and identifying as a monk.
LOL this is so true. I came here to add the same comment. I recently saw his book in a book shop in Australia where I live and thought now he's trying to do the same thing in a different coutnry! XD
Once I heard something from a lady very special to me : she said :“ the men’s mind is a land that only the self enters”. By being young I didn’t at the time understand exactly what she wanted to say. Today I understand that we have to understand our selves and be aware of our thoughts because the mind is always trying to take control and most of the time in a negative ways. Awareness to thoughts Control the feelings when appears Don’t suppress feelings Act always in a peaceful matter within yourself Peace isn’t free it takes a lot of work to be able to have a balanced mind .
I love the open mindset being described as "don't know mind!" I'm 73, and want to develop that because my "know what I want" mind has backfired so many times!❤
What you read out about the emotion of anger, either letting it out outrageously, or suppressing it, or burying it, is so absolutely true. But this is not only for anger, but for all negative emotions, be it hatred, hurt, jealousy , stress, envy, it all leads to disease in the body. The very word disease is because - dis + ease within us. If we can become aware and watch it, it changes its course for the betterment of one's own self. This requires tremendous awareness of the mind and body of the self.
What the monk said , is like a hammer on the nail. The want of something to become happy is the greatest cause of our unhappiness. GRATITUDE is the biggest and the best form of being HAPPY.
Super grateful for meditation, it's quite magical, in short. Truly grateful for my Dad, thank you Dad for being my Dad. Will forever have and share your Love, Wisdom and Wit. 💜
Everyone should learn to be a great interviewer like this doc!! He truly listens n doesn't keep talking over his guests like Oprah n many others. Great job, doc!! 😘 😘
I am so happy to know that there is one other person whom I hav e heard not met,but thinks that HAPPINESS is when you don't WANT anything anymore. ( That WANT, you know what I mean, yes no doubt I would like for some things to happen, but if they don't, it doesn't matter, and if it does happen, I am in GRATITUDE, not Happiness.) I hope I am putting it right. Nice to meet you dr. Chatterji😊
Nice to hear Dr Rangan’s show. He brings all the people who talks about the importants of emotions which is the most for us to live fully but not by having ambitions & desires which is taught by our society, schools and most of parents.
I'm already grinning with gratitude Dr Chatterjee, that you and this wonderful Buddhist Monk, Haenin Sunim, have got me thinking about this, and have already experienced some release of stress/worry connected sensations that bothered me for the last few days! Facing the negative feelings. I often thought exercise and meditation would melt them away without my first facing the truth! Wow;❤
❤ "Don't Know Mind" Makes so much sense looking back at things that's seemed awful at the time had a greater purpose for good in my life. It also takes the pressure off of everyone being perfect.
Thank you so much for all your work to share profound insights for the benefit of your listeners! We are grateful to you and your guests for share valuable insights and lessons for greater happiness and health! Many many thanks!🎉
I really like how he answered the question about the American Dream. Broadening out to the concept of overdoing self reliance leading to burn out is so true.
I love from little Gratitude . from from self make clean house , from self make cooks, from caring parents and husband and kids , from respectful to elderly people, from loving youth, from sharing wisdom, from little exercises likes walking to shop ( be green ) instead driving, from acting positive by teaching kids and effects people around us ( even pick up a liter and put them in the bin or talk kindly words to people) . Enjoy the good or bad experience moments as it is our human exam. We don't need to be full marks. All bad things are life experience , just dealing without gains and loosing mind .
Peace in their own hearts and mind is the best way to deal with this any problem that comes up with this worlds problems. Peace within our bodies is the only solution.
I loved this conversation! There are so many gems of wisdom...don't know mind, beginner's mind, slowing down, gratitude. During the pandemic, I was teaching Special Education remotely. It was challenging for so many students. I started a daily "silver linings" board. After a bit the kids began to notice things that were actually better, like time to play board games as a family because everyone is suddenly all home together! It was transformative in very hard times.
Thank you very much for this marvelous inward journey... everything beautiful and true is inside us ,we just need to pause and and see with clear mind what is authentic and what is not...God has created happiness deep inside us and it is our mission to align with it.
It’s lovely to hear about all these techniques to improve our wellbeing and happiness. I wish you could approach the search for happinness and calm for those who live in insecure countries, with autocratic governents where corruption and impunity exist but people still strive to live a happy life. How can one cope or pursue calm, peace, happiness. I don’t want to mention countries but some names come to us like Cuba, Venezuela, Nicaragua or Mexico which is right now being turned into a country that is losing its democracy. How to thrive in well being in difficult countries. Please explore this scenario. Thank you.
I learned about meditation and awareness from listening to Yongey Mingyur Rinpoche, a well known Buddhist lama who has participated in neuroscience research at Dr. Richard Davidson's Center for Healthy Minds in Madison, Wisconsin. Rinpoche refers to "glimpses"...those moments of peace that are ever present in each moment when we are aware. It's quite profound in light of our frantic pursuit of the illusion of "happiness" as a destination. Impetmanence is the reality.
What a great episode. I truly felt everything the two of you were discussing. It’s not easy to live a simple life and be happy with the present moment but through practice I think we can all get there. Thank you for sharing you’lls insight and wisdom….🙏🙏🙏
I totally agree that peace of mind is paramount for true happiness BUT I don't know how anyone these days can experience peace when there is so much suffering especially by children and animals caught up in today's wars. To overcome this overwhelming emotion, many spiritual teachers advocate detachment. However, if we all detached, in my opinion, no one would try to do anything to help. Should we turn a blind eye then to these problems?
Yes there is huge application for detachment and interconnection but the conversation does not get highlighted. Social justice at every level- where egos are checked and the core business is focused on and refocused on, beginners mind honoured which then brings the organisation and those involved back to the core focus. This is ignored. Anyone who is on the cushion has a lot of opportunities to walk the walk, the true road to honouring interconnection is about working for social justice without ego, that is detachment.
@@melliecrann-gaoth4789Interesting thought. Just be aware that in many cases, social justice itself is defined based on values that are intrinsically egoistic.
For myself, I've found no need to leave one's town of origin (situation) to relinquish responsibility of family. It can be done sitting in a small room with family right beside oneself. Just the same as one can feel alone in a crowd of thousands. It's about mind and intensions. I can be halfway round the world and fully involved with those I love.
I loved this conversation! Many thanks to both of you 😊🙏 There’s another guest who I think would be wonderful to interview: Mingyur Rinpoche. He’s a monk and meditation teacher (from the Tibetan tradition) from Nepal and he’s written some wonderful books including The Joy of Living and In Love with the World. He also has a very helpful RUclips channel with many short teaching videos that explain the concepts of Buddhism and meditation in a way that’s very easy to understand and apply. He’s quite well known, but if you’re not aware of him and his teachings already, you’re in for a treat 🤓
It's a shame that he is a hypocrite, but I would submit that this does not invalidate his message. There's a lot of value in his words for all of us, and maybe someday he too will embrace the truth - gratitude, peace, and love. They're not just for hippies anymore.😊❤
For all spiritual seekers, believing each of us is unlimited, abundance in all aspects of life is our natural, unconditional love and totally acceptance as oneness, - judgement of what monk’s life should be? It is a great example and set a wonderful example that even a monk can live in heaven earth with abundance - is this 5 D dimensional!!! I love it. Be rich ourselves not push others down because we could not reach. Just like saying it is our nature to suffer at earth, do we have??? could we change it for 5D dimension earth?
Helpful interview and I appreciate you including survival in the equation. The question is how to integrate spiritual principles with survival. Is it possible? How can people who are in survival help themselves via spirituality. I feel that is an important subject because there are levels of existence and we do need to acknowledge and talk about the survival part and how to work with that. Fear is an aspect that we may ignore working with. Healing the soul of people like Trump, Putin, Netanyahu and that North Korean buy is so crucial - I realize that these beings have had problems in the way they are raised and also the countries they live in... How can we affect a shift on the planet by also working on the inner Trump, inner Putin etc... that hunger for power and existence. People addicted - how can we break the cycles. We start with ourselves for sure but then, even with ourselves, we may need to transform the darker emotions while having compassion to the oppressed and the oppressors. How can we stop pointing fingers and do the deeper transformative work. Is it possible to bring our planet to full balance so that every being is no longer in survival? The super rich and the super poor. ..... Is it possible?? That is what I grapple with!
This monk was red-flagged and cancelled by South Korean public for him living luxurious life - expensive apartments in both Seoul and New York, driving a fancy Ferrari and so on. Maybe a monk can live like that but he was making his biz off of “not possessing” or “no possession” philosophy, selling books, giving lectures and running some kind of mindfulness biz😅 He truly is a joke, period.
Sounds like he is a Buddhism practitioner but he is not a truly Buddhist monk if he is enjoying his luxury lifestyle instead of letting go the materialistic lifestyle

Impermanence meditation is wonderful and can be done at all times in any situation, I enjoy observing the leaves on the ground when I come across them and thinking about how soon they will be gone and disappear into the soil and the atmosphere, When I take a step or a breath I know that that particular breath or step is unique and has a lifespan of that particular moment in space and time When I look at my loved ones I imagine them in the future I I imagine us in the future and what it will be like when we are gone so gratitude is born in my heart in the moments I am practicing impermanence meditation Because there is impermanence I can be alive in this moment If it wasn’t for impermanence I wouldn’t be here Because my grandparents were born and gave birth to my parents and they gave birth to me I am able to be here, if it wasn’t for there lives I could not be here, in essence I am them But I am also me And I am also you Because things are in a constant state of change this allows me to be alive If there were no impermanence there could be no life Because of death there is life So life is in death and death is in life And impermanence is that constant change between life and death In all moments in all of space I have died so many times before I am the autumn leaf fallen to the floor But I am also the flower blooming and the sun shine creating the dew in the early morning I have no come from somewhere and I will not go anywhere My face is as empty as the blue sky And my tears as salty as the oceans wave Because it all comes from the same source And that source is darkness The darkness which is masked in the light Life is just a game of hide and seek Soon I will make my disappearance once more But whom I’ve touched along the way will be my continuation That is the only thing that I know for certain Long live impermanence
Andrew Huberman has a podcast episode on the neuroscience of gratitude...there is science behind it that demonstrate the benefits and changes in the brain.
find book Unveiling Your Hidden Potential by Bruce Thornwood. Whoever find this book will have unfair adventage than other poeple. You'll thank me later
Surprise!😨He was a quite famous writer and monk in Korea. His books emphasized the beauty of slowing down in a complex and busy modern society, and advocated for a simple, humble life. The book became a bestseller. He appeared on television, and his popularity in Korea was tremendous. However, ironically, it was revealed that he is a investor with a great deal of wealth. He owned real estate in New York and a very expensive house in Korea. This made many people feel betrayed. Due to this incident, he was shunned in Korea and couldn't be active there for a while. Surprisingly, I found him on this channel here. I wonder if his business field has shifted. Of course, He could be crazy about money!😂 Anyway this interview is 😨😱! This is just my opinion, but seeing him emphasize the same simplicity and non-possession with that same innocent face as in Korea gives me chills.
The host mentions his not wanting anything anymore as knowing he’s happy. Not to be rude, but as a doctor and host of a podcast, is this because he already has enough monetary pleasures? I’m currently living in a shelter after spending the last several weeks homeless. I’ve found it quite remarkable to still start my day with a gratitude meditation and still find ways to smile and think without question of simple things that truly make me grateful. Matter a fact, one lesson has really been that I don’t need much at all. In a lot of ways this has helped to clear my vision to see what true happiness really is
I feel so disappointed that this monk is on your show. Isn’t this guy nothing but a fame and money seeking man in monk robe who had to leave South Korea after what kind of monk he was was exposed via online?
This monk, if one can call him that, preached "no possession", yet amassed wealth secretly on the backs of his followers. He was disgraced and had to leave his post.
The gold is in you it is health and balance..we impose our negative frustrations and wants unto others instead of Others LOOK AT YOUR EMOTIONS AND. IMPACT ON YOUR BODY. THE BODY HAS WISDOM. FROM STRESS AND UNFORGIVENESS ARE STORED IN YOUR GUT AND BACK. CENTRAL NERVOUS SYSTEM...SIT AND ANZLYZE YOUR IWN EMOTIONAL NEED OF ACCEPTANCE IF YOUR FRSLUSTRATING WANTS AND NEEDS DO LONG WALKS. AND MEDITATE OR JUST LAYY BACK AND REST BE GRATEFUL YOU ARE ALIVE. AND GRATEFULNESS RESTORES YOU. TO HEALTH ... CHOOSING TO LOOK. AT HOW GOOD YOUR.LIFE IS
When you sit with yourself and observe your body, par say 90 secs is after some practice, your pain doesn't just vanish, but it will make you realise what it is that is disturbing you emotionally. And once you pay attention to that and work on yourself, you will see the magic of the dis-ease turning to ease in the body.
Interconnectedness and other people will come to help when I am in trouble. This is ultimately about social justice. The core of exercising social justice and advocacy is about all those with means and abilities having their eye on interconnectedness off the meditation cushion. This ultimately involves politics and policy.
I don't really understand why the host invited the monk. Haemin is a very controversial man and the public opinions are divided for and against him in South Korea. Before contacting, you should have carefully investigated his history. FYI, I am Korean.
Here is a paradox when you have the awareness that there aren't any more thoughts, isn't that a thought in itself? In my practice, I often find this the beginning of a thread that pulls one away from the state of being both aware and devoid of thoughts
What if you're happy.. you do all these things but the bottom line is. As my family says is "my heart is in Los Angeles" No matter what I do.. I can't be happy anywhere else I tried and tried for 30 years but I keep going back to LA When I'm there it's not just the the vibe of the city it feels like a vortex to me and there's so many people that practice gratitude. Is there such a thing as a place you belong on this earth and that is where you need to dig your feet in the dirt??
Wow when was this video taken? He is being considered in Korea as a fake as his life style contradicts to everything Buddhism upholds. Full material greed & possession. Incredibly thick face he has in doing this kind of interview.
Nobody ate allowed to be happy for long notice it ,its called balance like yin and Yang Got created both so you can appreciate the opposite being happy all the time will be boring ,best thing have less of materials things and focus on love kindness and gratefulness,😇
Wrong guest. He's best known as the maximalist capitalist monk with fancy American Uni degree here in South Korea. And dear algorithm, don't push this channel to me, PLEASE.

When I take a step or a breath I know that that particular breath or step is unique and has a lifespan of that particular moment in space and time
When I look at my loved ones I imagine them in the future
I I imagine us in the future and what it will be like when we are gone so gratitude is born in my heart in the moments I am practicing impermanence meditation
Because there is impermanence
I can be alive in this moment
If it wasn’t for impermanence I wouldn’t be here
Because my grandparents were born and gave birth to my parents and they gave birth to me I am able to be here, if it wasn’t for there lives I could not be here, in essence I am them
But I am also me
And I am also you
Because things are in a constant state of change this allows me to be alive
If there were no impermanence there could be no life
Because of death there is life
So life is in death and death is in life
And impermanence is that constant change between life and death In all moments in all of space
I have died so many times before
I am the autumn leaf fallen to the floor
But I am also the flower blooming and the sun shine creating the dew in the early morning
I have no come from somewhere and I will not go anywhere
My face is as empty as the blue sky
And my tears as salty as the oceans wave
Because it all comes from the same source
And that source is darkness
The darkness which is masked in the light
Life is just a game of hide and seek
Soon I will make my disappearance once more
But whom I’ve touched along the way will be my continuation
That is the only thing that I know for certain
Long live impermanence
Andrew Huberman has a podcast episode on the neuroscience of gratitude...there is science behind it that demonstrate the benefits and changes in the brain.
Slow is faster .. love it.

A great conversation! So many nuggets!
Surprise!😨He
was a quite famous writer and monk in Korea. Of course, He could be crazy about money!😂
Anyway this interview is 😨😱!
This is just my opinion, but seeing him emphasize the same simplicity and non-possession with that same innocent face as in Korea gives me chills.
Sunim is❤
The host mentions his not wanting anything anymore as knowing he’s happy.
AT HOW GOOD YOUR.LIFE IS
nothing to do
Nowhere to go
You already are
who you want to become
-Thich Nhat Hanh
Thank you both ..great interview!!
inspiring - Me of me vs Me of others.
When you sit with yourself and observe your body, par say 90 secs is after some practice, your pain doesn't just vanish, but it will make you realise what it is that is disturbing you emotionally. And once you pay attention to that and work on yourself, you will see the magic of the dis-ease turning to ease in the body.
Thank you 🙏🏼
practical wisdom , appreciated
Interconnectedness and other people will come to help when I am in trouble. This is ultimately about social justice. The core of exercising social justice and advocacy is about all those with means and abilities having their eye on interconnectedness off the meditation cushion. This ultimately involves politics and policy.
20:28 it's not there anymore... love this
I don't really understand why the host invited the monk. Haemin is a very controversial man and the public opinions are divided for and against him in South Korea. Before contacting, you should have carefully investigated his history. FYI, I am Korean.
Although he may be controversial in Korea, this program does not appear to be made for Koreans.
Rangan Chatterjee is making difference immensely to the community at large
Thanks for this. 🙏

As my family says is "my heart is in Los Angeles"
No matter what I do.. I can't be happy anywhere else I tried and tried for 30 years but I keep going back to LA
When I'm there it's not just the the vibe of the city it feels like a vortex to me and there's so many people that practice gratitude.
I enjoy so much so much..i keep say my proofs
excellent rational explantion
I have one of his books 😊
Nobody ate allowed to be happy for long notice it ,its called balance like yin and Yang Got created both so you can appreciate the opposite being happy all the time will be boring ,best thing have less of materials things and focus on love kindness and gratefulness,😇
Wrong guest. He's best known as the maximalist capitalist monk with fancy American Uni degree here in South Korea. And dear algorithm, don't push this channel to me, PLEASE.
Please have Dr Cathleen King on the podcast
Thank you
