The history of residential schools, the development of reservations, the trading and plying of alcohol, etc were major detrimental factors. As an Indigenous person from Canada, and someone who lost a blood relative along the Highway of tears. Thank you for touching on Missing & Murdered Indigenous Women. Just another reminder as to why I’m subscribed to you! ❤️
Edit: thank you to those who had reached out, to give you a bit of back ground - I am adopted from Alberta, and was raised by a European family in Ontario.
My birth mother lived the same fate as I however, she was displaced as a result of the 60’s scoop - which has had lasting effects on our bloodline. It was her sister who was murdered, and to this day I’ve never met my aunt. However through the relationship with my biological mother I am well aware of the hurt it leaves within a family; knowing that you and your family members are disposable.

Look at the guy who was convicted based on his bite marks matching a victim who was then exonerated many years later with DNA. False positives like that are worse than no one caught at all, as much as that sucks. Same reason why the death penalty should never be considered in a criminal justice system.

I wanted to update everyone on Alexis Sharkey's death; her cause of death has officially been released. It was ruled homicide, specifically her death is the result of strangulation.
The worst part is I didn't see it until our birthday January 25th; it made the paper back home where her mom and I live and was reported on January 20th.
I won't let this go because her mom is someone I have so much respect and admiration for and have ever since she was my 6th grade social studies teacher. Her mom wished me a happy birthday which crushed me knowing her daughter will never celebrate that with her again, then seeing the paper my mom brought me on our birthday was just soul crushing.

We all know about Karla Homolka and Paul Bernardo, but at the same time as they were killing young women in Ontario, John Crawford was targeting Indigenous women in Saskatchewan and Alberta. Their voices and stories were forgotten and still go untold because of the glamourization of the "Ken and Barbie killers". Please continue to tell stories such as these and let the voices of Missing & Murdered Indigenous Women be heard.

He stabbed her vagina and left her to bleed to death in a hotel bathroom in Edmonton. I’m Mohawk, all people should announce their nation and not just say Indigenous, you have a specific identity, culture, language. I appreciate your bravery for covering this case. You are asking all the right questions & in turn, identifying the shortfalls of investigators. The law rarely cares and generally says the missing person is “just partying “. How many white women get the same accusation? Why, really why is it assumed that that’s what indigenous women do? That needs to be answered. I had a friends daughter murdered, tons, TONS of evidence clearly pointing to a specific person, with lots of history of violence towards women, blood stains on walls, clothing but it was ruled an OD. Can you believe that one??? Plz cover that one

LOL I hate to burst your bubble, but MOST white women get the same treatment. We get to see the very few ones that the MEDIA picks to cover. The police have limited resources and they get hundreds to thousands of missing person reports, some every month and others in a year. With a MAJORITY of people showing back up. They have to manage their resources. WOMEN should make better choices. It is has been KNOWN for DECADES that it IS DANGEROUS to hitchhike. NO they don't deserved to be killed for this but MURDERS DON'T CARE. They look for EASY targets. Women need to STOP BEING EASY TARGETS.

    • @ovvierazones
      @ovvierazones 4 года назад +9

@@catchtwenty22 You knew her personally? Or family or something? Just curious, it sounds like you do and even if you were extremely close(best friend, mom, son, brother, etc) - and I mean this in the kindest way, not trying to offend at all - you simply cannot know or say what Amber would've and wouldn't have done... you see her through the lens of your own life experience(s), your guys' relationship, etc. for better and for worse. I don't disagree with you and honestly you share some new to me info(assuming it is indeed true) but where I do take issue is when you say "no way, Amber was too smart to fall for that" when the fact of the matter is that she *did* "fall for" some level of deception, as evidence by the very fact that she's no longer here with us today. if she thought she was going to die she'd not have gotten into this particular vehicle, correct? and that doesn't mean she's stupid or not streetwise or ignorant or naive or anything: just that she's human and made a mistake, as well all do. unfortunately this mistake cost her and her family/friends so, so dearly. again, please do not think I'm judging: I'm the last person to judge, in fact I have family not far from this area and I myself have stayed(with my newborn premi son, as a matter of fact) in a similar shelter, I've hitchiked(in the past), etc.
i think *that* kind of thinking & speculation is more likely to sway matters into a potentially negative direction IMO, as does any kind of tunnel-vision inducing line of thinking does.
one other thing though to you and others: the term "trafficking" applies to more than just your average crime dramas' version of it, wherein people are snatched off the street, chained up and essentially become literal products, items to be used, bought and sold... especially in the case of the shelter mentioned above and in the video, what they mean is prostitution.
With the above in mind, I think that when people say her friend "trafficked" her it's because people are speculating on the "friends" strange actions/behaviours, some of which was not mentioned in the above video, although it sounds like you may already know about that... and it's not to say that she sold her outright for a lump sum to this man - that seems obvious enough - but that perhaps manipulated her into the situation, either like a recruiting type of thing or to "set up a date" for her, etc... not making accusations in the least, just trying to clarify.
also, devils advocate here for ya: a poor financial situation is not evidence to the contrary... people blow through crazy amounts of money all the time, especially if they've got addiction issues and whathave you... not saying either girl did ofc, but just pointing out an issue with your line of thinking on that.

Stephanie, I am a white settler Canadian and my minor at university is Indigenous Studies. My future research is dedicated to unpacking the settler colonial mindset in people like me so we can be better supporters and allies to Indigenous peoples in Canada. I tend to be really careful watching videos like this because sometimes people aren't the most informed about MMIWG and their comments sections can get really racist and awful. Firstly, I am blown away by the comments section here which has been full of some really incredible and important words. I hope we can keep this conversation going amongst Canadians and Americans especially.
The RCMP is a colonial, racist institution designed to police Indigenous people and ensure that the Canadian government will always have ownership over the territory. It was never designed to help Indigenous people. It's disgusting. It's heartbreaking, and I think you did a really good job at making that clear for viewers who might not have the information at hand.

As a Black American, it is refreshing to hear a Canadian being honest about their racism because it is often denied while everyone bashes the U.S. and for good reason. However, as a Caucasian please be careful not to be the voice of the Indigenous but only a supporter and ally as you state. Whenever Blacks speak for ourselves and state truths we are shot down and constantly told that we make everything about race unless Caucasians can take over the conversations. The story of our history and place in America has been manipulated and dishonest to make the world believe that we aren't already in our ancestral land. The best thing you can do is not to seek the attention and virtue signaling of become another 'white savior' yet instead, if you truly care about the racial disparity and dismantling generational lies and curses, then you will recognize your own individual privilege and not abuse it to further hurt those who are not as blessed.

I do think it's the psycho ranch guy. Maybe the American ranch guy stays on the same ranch and they are partners in crime. She was so scared she didn't even want the driver to know she was on the phone, she clearly dialed and then let the phone sit and record, but she was trying to leave hints of her whereabouts that is why she was repeating the street name. I live an hour away from where this happened, I have thought of this case many times over the years. You have given us more information than I have ever came across. For one I didn’t know anyone had come forward saying they knew whose voice that was in the recording. Why in the hell hasn’t he been arrested!?! So frustrating when we live in such a great country that criminals can get away with shit like this.
