Stephanie could post a video literally telling me my own life story & I swear I'd learn something new!! No matter how much I know about something, if it's her I'll always watch.
I think the tragedy of this case, as with the Elizabeth Smart case, is that Elisa has been lost as a person and replaced with myth. These women were real humans who deserve to maintain their personhood.
What does that even mean? You could make that point about any person in history, regardless of if they were murdered or not. Unless you knew Elisa Lam personally, you aren’t going to know who they really were as a person.
@@christyhoehn8244i think they're accidentally saying Elizabeth Smart when they mean Elizabeth Short who is more commonly referred to as The Black Dahlia.
I’ve already heard the Elisa Lam story many many times, but I will go to your videos for info and explanation of stories I’ve already heard, every time!!!
A hard part of depression is feeling slow, useless, and lazy when you want to be the best, productive version of yourself. My therapist says remember that depression has nothing to do with lack of inner drive 🥰 small reminder to be kind to yourself and others 💋
Has your therapist given you any lifehacks as to how to deal with depression on a daily basis, what practical things you can do? Not just the 'think positive" or 'be kind to yourself' stuff, but, I don't know, take a drink of water, do ten pushups, etc.? :) I am 100% sure I have been suffering from depression almost my entire life, even though I've never been diagnosed and treated properly :( Hence, I'm not on any meds, and would really appreciate some practical advice from whoever knows what they are talking about.

I feel really sad for her when people call her creepy and her death "creepy" , etc (even though it is). By her writings, the poor girl just wanted friends and acceptance. A sad ending to a sad life.
@@heathernikki5734 you said you feel sad when people call this case creepy...but it is creepy! I feel sorry for Elisa too, and would love to know what really happened to her😔
According to someone I know who is bipolar, this is a plausible interpretation: She was spooked by a feeling of being watched or pursued, and she was hiding from someone or some imagined entity. This kind of thing would be normal for someone experiencing such an episode. Now intellectually, she would have known no one was there, which is why she might have appeared playful and relaxed, because she's trying not to scare herself. The internal thoughts might have been something like "Come on, there's nobody there, don't be silly." But then, the elevator not moving might have made her more anxious and creeped out. As the episode intensified, she might have been searching for a hiding place. She may have collected roof detritus on her clothing because she initially hid somewhere close to the ground up there, or because she sat down on the roof, or slipped and fell while up there, there are countless possibilities for that one. If she was convinced she was actively being pursued by someone malevolent, the tank might have seemed a safe hiding place in her mental state. But here's the thing, for me. I absolutely hate it when someone's mental illness is used to explain away something that should be thoroughly investigated. When someone is found dead, it's easy and lazy to just write the person off as mentally ill and close the case. Since it's closed there should be no reason to keep the information from the public. Who did the cops interview? What about these roommates? Someone having an episode where reality is distorted might be an easy victim. Did she discover a small party on the roof? Did someone egg her on or tell her to get in the tank? Just because she had the possibility of an episode doesn't rule out the possibility of someone else's involvement. I feel like if the cops were confident in this ruling they would publish their findings, even if they felt the need to keep the names of people interviewed anonymous. Where there's smoke there's often fire and when people aren't willing to be transparent it really makes one wonder why. From what we know, the above is probably the best explanation. But if we were to discover in police interviews, say, a person had been following her or spending time with her in her room, and that person checked out and left the state right before she was reported missing, that might change the picture instantly. The mentally ill do not deserve second-rate justice, as I'm sure we'd all agree. They deserve the same consideration as everyone else. It's possible that Elisa accidentally ended her own life due to an episode. But we don't have the information to know that conclusively. And if someone did do this to Elisa, or contribute to her death by menacing or negligence, they have gotten away with it.
Wonderfully written. She may have had mental health issues, and yes, in lieu of any more information, maybe it was a contributing factor. But the questions surrounding her death are far too vast to say definitely that this was the cause, and she is owed the same duty of care as anyone else, without prejudice.
Song Weaver I've been a therapist for 40 yrs. Your friend gave an accurate description of what a person with bipolar disorder is going through & I do think this likely is an unfortunate accident caused by her bipolar disorder. Unfortunately many people with this illness do not consistently remain taking their much needed medication, & then run into real risks. Having said that, I think you very beautifully pointed out something that happens all too often: people with a mental illness, as well as people who have fallen on hard times & become homeless, often receive 2nd class justice. It's heart breaking & wrong & the implication is that they are not as valued as others are. I think in actual fact they do end up being undervalued but I think it begins due to the cost of investigations being such that there is always a need to keep costs down. This leads to the most logical assumption becoming the conclusion without any significant investigation done to verify this. If more often than not investigations do show the most logical assumption is actually what happened, it's a short step to just automatically make those assumptions & cut corners. Thank you for saying what you did. I hope you & others continue to point out the importance of a properly thorough investigation being done for ALL people. The more we speak up about this, the better the chance the mindset of taking short cuts being changed for the better. People with mental illness or homelessness deserve as much respect as all of us, they are people just like us, & none if us are exempt from the struggles they are going through.

I was there the weekend she was there and went missing. I was walking back to the hotel from the Staples center and had that "hairs on the back of my neck" creeped-out feeling. I live in the city of Seattle, I don't get creeped out easily. There was a guy walking a ways behind me and it was completely plausible that he was simply walking in the same direction, and I told myself that REPEATEDLY as I kept walking and quickening my pace feeling more and more creeped out. By the time I turned left on the street that the Cecil was on, the guy was almost right behind me and followed me into the hotel. At this point I was absolutely internally freaking out, and I glanced at the front desk and mouthed "Help" as I veered left toward the elevators. I pressed the button, an elevator opened, and I jumped inside. The guy tried to follow me in, but someone from the desk jumped out and blocked him, screaming at him "GET OUT OF HERE, We've told you before!" So ....pretty sure I was right, and he was intentionally following me. There was no way he would have known what room I was staying in, so I got off on the "wrong floor" first and then backtracked. I didn't sleep at all that night and I was completely freaked out. I left for the airport early the next morning. Then a few weeks later Elisa was found in the water tank and turns out she was there and went missing at the same time I was there. The last footage of her is her in an elevator freaking out like someone was following her. WHELP, never stayed there again lol.
i recomend watching the show on netflix that talks about this thy bring up good points about the siyuation and also how fotage from an elavator she was in
Agree. I lived in Seattle too. What a frigging spook-fest! I was even there during Mar-Apr 2020, when the ghost vibe went way crazy. And of course I always shivered driving past Bundy & Ridgeway’s hunting and killing grounds.
I'm homeless. I've spent over ten years in and out of hostels, rough sleeping, sofa surfing, living in tents... Thank you so much for speaking about this. You brought a tear to my eye.

Did the police ever mention anything about her belongings in her room? She never checked out, so her belongings should still be there. I never hear anything about her room....
I'm sure someone else has already commented this, but in science ELISA stands for Enzyme-Linked Immuno-sorbent Assay and is a really common scientific test that is used in a lot of diagnostics and LAM is the protein they test for in the urine. I do ELISAs in my lab with undergrads all the time. Just a creepy coincidence that her name is spelled the same.
Have you noticed how introverts understand extroverts, but extroverts cannot fathom us? During a discussion on this topic, one of my dearest friends insisted to me that I MUST be an extrovert, because I am at ease around others and appear to enjoy myself at gatherings. I pointed out that the difference is an extrovert will feel energized after a party, and an introvert will feel completely drained. She actually said, "That's just wrong. How do you fix that?"
Yes, I would like you to do a video about Jack Unterweger too! I'm not familiar with his story, & your intriguing way of presenting information would make it very interesting!
I watched the netflix show about Elisa and her death. I was intrigued because I to have a diagnosis that is similar to Elisa. I also tend to stop medication. I think this poor girl was in a manic/psychosis episode and she accidentally got herself into the water tank trying to hide from the monsters in her head. It's heartbreaking.
i find it so frustrating that american pop/media/culture glorifies mental insanity and psychosis, but cannot seem to accept that these are devastating and frightening brain disorders. the type that can make you do things like end your own life in what might be seen as "bizarre circumstances", but to the patient, they were locked in a prison only they could sense. i agree 10,000% this shouldnt have been sensationalized and gobbled up as a conspiracy theory the way it has been by entertainment media giants. and they barely even shed light or resources/assistance for people who are currently struggling! no! it just shows us if you die as a result of a terrifying mental disorder, some big sexy LA studio will get the rights and the funding and will just make documentaries about you!!! rest in peace Elisa, you did not deserve this suffering, or this tragic ending. (and i hope your parents find some sense of peace as well even thought they never will and i say that as as mother.)
As someone who's on antidepressants, I can firmly say that (depending on the type of medication) forgetting to take/not taking your meds for just a single day can really mess you up. In the mornings I was fine, but as the day went on and my body started realizing the pills weren't in my system it had a really strong reaction; I got dizzy spells so intense that I couldn't see straight and had to lay down for the rest of the day. I feel like a lot of people underestimate how important it is to take your meds when they're prescribed, especially psychoactives, since they can effect your body and chemical levels way more than you'd think. While I'm not convinced that's all there is to the story, I can't imagine how she wouldn't have been affected by the medications that she was (or wasn't) taking.
Another rider of the antidepressant express has boarded this train. I too have experienced some disorienting sensations when either forgetting my meds for a few days or running out a few days before I could afford to get them refilled. Mine manifested as some kind of full body phantom sensation. The best way I can describe it is a cross between the way your body feels after spending all day at a water park - lying in bed that night I would become aware that my whole body could still feel the water lapping up against every inch of my skin - and how awkward your whole body feels when you've taken roller skates off after a couple hours at a skating rink; that way your feet & body expect you to glide when you take the first step and how you become very aware of all the coordination of limbs required to walk somewhat normally and not faceplant. Just a little bit unsteady for a few minute and if you don't pay attention your body will lift your foot too high (expecting to have to overcome the weight of the skate) and at the moment the increased forward movement enabled by the rolling surface of the skate wheels *should* happen, the rubbery sole of your shoe grips the nubby carpet like it's auditioning for Shoe Sole of the Year, and if you're lucky enough to not fall right on your face, biting thru your lip and chipping your front tooth, you'll merely experience what feels like for your very soul to step right out of your body.
Zoloft withdrawal. Ugh. Worst vertigo ever, and it lasted for TWO MONTHS which shouldn't even happen according to every source on earth except my own experience. I couldn't turn my head without the entire room continuing to spin around me. I was running into walls, walking into door frames, and telling over furniture. What an awful period of time. I can't say I had any real behavioral problems as a result of it, but I did have major physical discomfort.
At the point that the water started "smelling weird" and getting discoloured, Elisa's body had been decomposing for a long time and everyone in the hotel as been drinking decomposed stew. Absolutely terrifying and horrific.

This is the first Elisa Lam video that I've seen that has had such a positive message at the end. I think that's amazing that you want to spread her message instead of just focusing on the case as some spectacle.
I couldn't agree more with Alice. Thank you, Stephanie, for spreading the positive message Elisa wanted to share with the world. I'm certain Elisa appreciates that and if she could talk to you, she would tell you so.
The creepiest thing about the whole video is that elevator never closes the entire time while she's there but then finally closes when she leaves.. that is nucking futs!
Not as creepy as the Last Bookstore using a private company for their website based in Burnaby where she was from and the zip code in Google maps goes to the cemetery where she is buried.
I have bipolar disorder. I was diagnosed with it when I was 16 and have been on medication for it for 12 years now. Bipolar disorder can cause hallucinations and delusions. I've had both. Anyone can learn this with a simple Google search so I don't understand why the belief that Elisa couldn't have gone into the tank of her own free will is so pervasive. She lost touch with reality. Her decisions will make sense *only* to her. Sometimes coincidences are weird and people die tragic, needless deaths as a result of something as simple as not taking your medication. And as someone with bipolar disorder, her death is a morbid reminder for me to stay on my medication.
Your right bipolar disorder & depression w. Debilitating anxiety can cause hallucinations and delusions, I stopped my meds abruptly and suffered severe hallucinations to the point of calling 911 telling them people are in my walls coming to kill me, breaking into my internet connection, camera on me, to me it was all 💯 , so our/my mental state if not kept on check can lead to devastation as w. This case...!!!!!
This is not with all forms of bipolar disorder and you shouldn’t make it seem that way. People who know nothing about it read your comment and then assume everyone who has bipolar disorder is delusional and has hallucinations, which isn’t true.
Brush your teeth, take meds, wash face, I use the tap at hotels for that. The ice machines all hook into water line, coffee maker (may or may not add bottled), etc.
“This is a lot of work to go to a place that just sounds awful. “ My exact thought every time I have to leave my house to go anywhere that requires a shower and real pants.
I agree with your dad. It's easy to always assume someone else did it or want someone else to blame. Nothing on the elevator made me think somebody was after her.
But how did she end up in the water tank? Hotels usually have the roof locked, and the water tank is also locked Which means she maybe thought she just have an episode? And did see something she shouldn't have seen? Owner or manager of the hotel have access to anything and other staff members like maintenance
@@ChrisAtheist so I'm not sure what I was watching (oh wait! I remember! The one bald guy who does like "behavior analysis" did a video on wether or not the Cecil hotel manager was being honest or not) anyways she (the hotel manager) said at that time they were not "required" by law to lock the water tanks so they weren't locked and there were several ways to access the roof I guess without a key and really does that place strick you as somewhere with hightech security or super secured locked doors? So I'm thinking she somehow got on the roof of her own accord and claimed into the tank herself or by someone else's hand 🧐🤔
I think so too. It sounds like she wasn't in a mentally healthy space when she took that trip. It sounds like she just sunk further and further down. While there may be paranormal stuff at Play, I think that her mental state may have led her up to that place.
Can you imagine being her parents? Knowing your child so well and then seeing how strange she was acting in the elevator. That mystery as a parent would be torture.
So it was basically a hotel full of impoverished and likely depressed people. That explains all the suicide. Not terrifying so much as it's heartbreaking.
As someone with bipolar disorder who’s currently experiencing a mixed episode with psychotic features, I can say with 100% confidence that the way she’s acting looks like a manic or psychotic episode to me, and it breaks my heart. I know her parents regret letting her travel alone, and I don’t want to blame them for this, but it upsets me deeply that this happened and that she was alone in another country. I wish they had somehow kept her home and properly on her medication to prevent this break from occurring 💔
Yes. These bedroom crime sleuths have no clue whatsoever what they're talking about. They read little here, they read a little there, and they think they have everything solved. They then start spouting theories that have no basis in reality whatsoever. They cloud the waters, rumors start and then the whole thing goes to hell. That's exactly what this video does.
I'm not making a video and putting it on RUclips as fact. These types of videos should have a disclaimer at the beginning stating that it's only theory.
and yet the public just wants to believe her mental state wasnt the cause of her death and instead want to believe it was murder, to dramatize her death which is so dumb
Omg your description of introversion is so spot on. I had always considered myself an extrovert growing up because I was always a "social butterfly" but as I've grown into adulthood, and working on trauma processing from childhood and adulthood events, I've realized that I am way more introverted than not. I just really appreciate hearing how you described it here. It's validating to hear that I'm not alone in wanting to be alone and getting to a point where I just don't even care if people think I'm weird for it. I'm not (usually) considered socially awkward when I do decide to socialize so I think I'll just continue taking respite in the peace and comfort of my own space with my best friend, my pup.
@@PiercingChild Maybe because there were parallels to a Japanese horror movie? Which is stupid, because the Lam family are Canadian, of Chinese descent. P.S. Right, I live in southern California, not the LA region, but the cities around here treat homeless people alike, the city a while ago voted against building a local shelter (all the homeless shelters for our area are actually pretty far out of the way) because they were afraid having the shelter would attract even more homeless individuals and of course they didnt want to spend the resources 😒 and instead the city in the past year has spent money on adding useless signs of different cities within the area and like marks/ landmarks that are really just useless but make the city/county look more modern I guess??? I think it's a total waste of resources though and I constantly hear people complain of how we've gotten more homeless individuals living in and near the beach cities in my county. But again no one is intrested In sharing the abundance of resources our city clearly has to HELP people
Not sure Stephanie mentioned this but a lot of homeless people are mentally ill and Veterans. The more they cut funding for people with mental illness they close the mental health facilities. Basically leaving them to their own devices. This happened where I live in Illinois and it is a travesty.

I've been a highrise window cleaner for 3 years. I cannot do my job unless I have access to the roof. In my experience with old and new hotels the roof hatch is always locked. The chain of command goes like this, call front desk, front desk calls security, security will unlock the roof. If security is not available building maintenance will unlock instead. In my opinion, this woman would not know that this was a water tank or there would be a hatch to climb into on top. (The hatch on top of the water tank should be locked by a separate key or combination from the roof lock). I barely notice these things and I see them every day. I don't think it was a hotel employee (front desk/housekeeping). I think it was building security (they have the keys) who I often see on the roof hiding from work taking smoke breaks or using cell phones, or building maintenance who always have the keys and take them home. If it was security they probably had this planned in there mind and scouted the water tank in advance to even know what it is and how to put a body in it. Or it was building maintenance who knew exactly where this was, had the keys to access this and the presence of mind to know blind spots to not get caught. On the other hand security who also has keys know all the blind spots and also has access to surveillance, explaining why 1min of the video is erased. I don't pretend to know her mental state but the more unstable someone like her is the more she becomes a target for a predator with knowledge of the building and keys to the roof
Brian M i did security at a high rise apartment building in downtown la and the roof door was unlocked. My grandmas high rise retirement apartment building was also unlocked
Very interesting but I think it’s important to remember this was a low end hotel. A low end hotel that was about to close. A low end hotel right off skid row. It had hostel style rooms. I live in New York and couldn’t even tell you where to get a hostel style room... and I can tell you three hotels you can rent by the hour within ten miles of here. I do agree that someone who’s having a mental episode is DEFINITELY at risk for a bad person to do something to them, but it’s already been proven the hatch was open when they found her... I think she was having a manic episode and either thought she was hiding from someone. Or, was having a manic episode that made her think she was lucky enough to find somewhere to swim. The water tank would’ve then lowered and she couldn’t get back out. As for being undressed, there are a lot of explanations. I think the hotel hadn’t kept up with any of the things they should have... I don’t think there was a working alarm, I don’t think the door was locked. I don’t think they invested in security cameras in all the places they should have had them. Idk.... Could be either reason but it was definitely down to her mental health imo. Maybe it was her first truly manic episode.
What's weird is when this was first discovered and plastered all over social media, I read an article saying the missing piece of the surveillance tape showed what looked to be her interacting with two guys that seemed to have handed her something that appeared be a small box that they assumed could have been drug related. But they (the guys) were questioned and it was nothing significant to the case and was not drug related. But as of now I can't find anything about it what-so-ever!? They claimed the guys must have taken the stairs because they passed by her either while she was standing in the elevator or outside in the hallway waiting for the elevator. So I'm not sure if this was part of this surveillance camera or one in a hallway or downstairs or even the same day. But they said they were not going to release names or video to protect their identity because they weren't suspects. It's just so odd I can no longer find anything about it. Another weird thing is that the search dogs found no scent of her on the roof and she would have walked all over the roof, so could she have been carried and placed on the wooden platform the towers were on, if she was murdered?(Even though I do believe it was an accident and it wasn't unusual for her to climb on top of roofs because she had done it many times taking pictures and hanging out, so maybe she climbed up the tower to get a better view sat down with feet dangling in the hole and accidentally fell in, but it doesn't explain the odd behavior in the video or why her camera went missing)A guy went to the hotel and filmed himself climbing the fire escape and accessing the roof and seeing 2 hatches were open still and this was after this happened. And he did this with a camera in his hand so it must not be too difficult to get up there. And a picture taken before she went missing showed a wooden step ladder against one of the water towers. If it were a murder I would suspect someone else to have been murdered by now. And no way they could have climbed that step ladder and placed her in the tank. And killers don't usually kill once and stop in most cases. Thats if Unless they are caught. And also I read she had pooling around her rectum. Which could prove rape. But no rape kit was performed or samples from scrapings under her nails were taken and analyzed, and if so that info hasn't been released. Seems all hotels are different, we can't even be 100% sure the door was locked or if the alarm even worked. They said graffiti and cigarette butts were up there, so people were accessing the roof on occasion.
No matter how many times I’ve seen that elevator footage it scares the shit outta me. No matter what you think, demons, ghosts or simply mental health, that footage is horrible. I’m so glad you covered this cos you always do everything so well and thought out!
I don't know. I've had mental health episodes like this before and the footage just strikes me as a little sad more than anything. I mean, the fact that she ended up dead shortly after *is* terrifying, don't get me wrong, but the video on its own not so much. To me at least. Pushing all the buttons, hiding a bit when the elevator doesn't work, playing with her hands afterwards -- just seems like an episode. (Doing weird things with your hands, by the way, is a super normal way to self regulate, either intentionally or subconsciously. It's a bit like shaking your knee when you're nervous.) (as for the elevator not working, that honestly could have just been because she pushed all the buttons at once.)
Sory González lol!!! i was the only one awake at home, it was very late, i got so creeped out i grabbed one of my cats and brought him with me to turn off the lights!!! lmaoooo
Leave it to professor Harlow to give us a wonderful history lesson on the origins of " skid row " whilst learning about the Lam case! (Best channel ever) 😍
Definitely my favorite channel. Not to mention, she spoke about the homeless crisis, about how none of us are alone. She is genius and compassionate. I always learn things about cases I thought I knew inside and out. She needs her own show on Investigation Discovery Channel.
I just really feel that there’s an energy in that hotel that consumes the people in there, like if they’re already prone to depression, there they reach the worst level, the one that leads to suicide. I thought I didn’t no longer believe in spirit world, but this case has made me question that belief.

I was sucked into Elisa Lams case a few years ago. I never tire of hearing about it, especially from you. I still believe there’s more to the story here.
That elevator footage really creeps me out. I've watched several youtubers cover this case and have only been able to watch the footage once and then never again. When the footage comes up I have to go to another browser window and just listen. I can't. Omg.
The antidepressant she was on was Wellbutrin. I was on that once, and just once I took my dose early and forgot the alarm I usually had to remind me, and went to bed. Alarm went off, I was working on reflexes and took a second dose. I ended up having to call an ambulance I was hallucinating so badly (the phone keypad was 'scrambled' and I had to try and remember where the right numbers were) I was seeing people that weren't there, hearing people that weren't there. I pulled my IVs out to 'prove' there was a hospital employee under my bed - and that was even when I was _aware_ what I was hearing and seeing wasn't real. If she was on other meds she suddenly stopped taking, throwing all the other meds into whack, and she started hallucinating _without_ understanding she was? Yes absolutely, having been in that position that video doesn't seem weird to me at all, it could have been me. And on the same medication she was on, and just _one_ extra accidental dose did that.
Really seems to explain a lot. Poor girl, but one wonders if she had mental problems why she was allowed to travel by herself. In fact, it's not safe for any woman to go somewhere alone.
I was on Wellbutrin for a week. What a nightmare. I was taking the prescribed dosage at the same time everyday. I actually became mentally unstable, paranoid, and borderline psychotic (IMO). Scary drug.
I’ve been on many many many different depression, bi-polar and anti-anxiety meds, including Wellbutrin, but I always told my Drs “start low and slow” so it was gradual increase and decreases. Never experienced visual hallucinations, thankfully. That would be scary!
Strangely, it was Topamax which sent me over the edge. It was prescribed as a migraine preventative. Within a short while I became terribly paranoid. I didn't feel attached to this world. Would beg my husband not to go to work as it was frightening to be left on my own. Went to the grocery store and it took everything I had to not run out screaming. I would sit in a corner of a room until my husband came home. Took about a week after stopping to feel normal again. These drugs really mess with our brain chemicals.
I’ve taken that several times and usually just randomly stop within 6 months. I’ve never had any problems. In fact I don’t think it ever worked at all. I couldn’t tell the difference when I started or when I stopped.
I feel inclined to believe Elisa was having an episode from the medication she was taking to treat her illness, but also I find it very strange that the elevator wasn't closing no matter what she was doing. It could have been a electrical malfunction that was a total coincidence, however, given Elisa didn't seem to be in the right state of mind, I feel like what was just a mechanical problem might've played into Elisa's paranoia that someone was after her and influenced her strange behavior. Also I find it extra creepy the elevator for whatever reason does not close until after she gets off the floor and is gone.
I've come to realize that weird and sinister stuff happens at hotels... I was gonna go for a staycation on my own, and my fella was like NO, I'm coming with you, don't go somewhere unfamiliar and stay over by yourself, and I'm like, meh... Then about 4 months later things about the kenneka Jenkins case, amongst others started to pop up... It was like a freakin warning, so that, along with the stories I was reading, made me be like, OK, I changed my mind, I'm not going to stay in a hotel, motel, hostel, or any such establishment by myself...
It's not homeless people who need rehabilitated, it's society that needs it. The richer and bigger the city, the less money is spent on the community that needs it most. This is our shame to bear, not theirs.
eh, thats big of you, but it's still the homeless people who need the rehabilitation more than anyone. drug addiction is the big one. we're talking 99%
@@cametochangemyusername-can1295 drug addiction, without question edit: I don't disagree with the sentiment of the OP, for the record. In all my time on the street, I never met another homeless person who was not addicted to either meth, heroin, or both. not a single one. I met one or two ladies who could clean up and become a 'down on their luck' sort that regular folks imagine _at least some_ of the homeless population to be, but in my experience, they simply don't exist. even the people who are a clear cut case of mental illness are addicted.
Sadly, I have to agree on the addiction. I used to think it was mostly just people who'd had really bad turns of luck. Losing a job, debt, that sort of thing. Turns out that a really high percentage of the homeless had those issues due to addiction because of gambling, drugs, alcohol etc. That doesn't mean they don't deserve a better life. We still need to find good, accessible ways to help them.
I think her strange movements in the elevator was her being confused about the doors not closing. She might have been trying to trigger the door closing with the hand movements. I know she was off her meds but I also think there was foul play. That hotel is shady as hell. They're definitely covering up something. And the LAPD....a suspicious bunch. We don't know everything.
Don't get why the LAPD didn't wanted to talk about the phone? A simple we didn't find a phone or we are still trying to get data from the pbone would be something they would say if it's a regular case
Watched you cover this case forever ago but just saw your coverage on the Netflix documentary and was so excited for you. Not at all surprised because you ALWAYS go above and beyond, just glad to see your amazing work getting the recognition of truly deserves! Congrats Stephanie Harlowe!
When you said the words “Dark Water” it got me thinking - I wonder if she was in a bad place mentally, if she was attempting to use the water tank as a sort of sensory deprivation tank? She may have removed her clothes in attempt to float more easily. Still very bizarre, but if you’re not in a good place mentally or emotionally you can tend to justify things differently. Such a strange case involving what seems like such a tortured young soul ❤️
THIS HAS BEEN MY THEORY FOR YEARS! i haven’t finished the video yet but i’m so pleasantly surprised to see someone else think this since people think i’m weird for thinking that
@tay steezy It does sound weird I admit - real sensory deprivation tanks need salt and things to help you float etc, and there’s still the question of how she physically managed to climb up into it, but if she was feeling desperate and needed an escape from whatever was going on in her mind then I can see how she might have ended up trying it 🤔
I mean, you're totally right. The two times leading up to me attempting suicide (dark, I know, bear with me) I would do really weird, sporadic things. Like, just sit in one corner of my room and just babble or rock back and forth, staring at nothing.
Beka May yeah i totally get that! i left a comment that further explains my personal theory due to my personal experience with bipolar mania/psychosis. she seemed like an inquisitive girl and she showed interest in the hotel before she even stayed, i wonder if she saw the tanks on google maps or something? of course it doesn’t explain everything but i personally lean towards the psychosis theory due to my personal experience :-)
Tammy Ammy i was watching it in bed really late. I had to turn it off as I needed the toilet and felt too scared to get out of bed 😳 this is the spookiest vid Steph has ever done!
It's very strange but I've had a TB test before and I think a few others where I've seen ELISA. It's some sort of scientific term for the test assay, but I can't remember what.
Stephanie Harlowe uploads video. Me: *drops everything I’m doing and click out of whatever other RUclips video I’m watching* Ps: I’m really glad this was monetized!!! You put in crazy amount of work in your videos!
The LaPD is notoriously terrible unfortunately it takes ALOT to actually get some justice against the terrible cops and officials that are part of the lapd
I lean toward this being a tragic accident, but it still creeps me out like nothing else and I understand why it’s such a captivating story. The elevator footage makes me so uneasy every time I see it!
I feel like the LAPD didn’t bother with the case due to the fact that she was a foreign national. The paperwork, communication between both law enforcement entities, and the leg work that is used to handle cases of foreign nationals is pretty intense. This is not an excuse for LAPD to improperly investigate this case.
I thought they did Stephanie dirty, made her look like some sort of crazy obsessed person. They also painted the homeless, ex cons and addicts as evil and frightening
There are literally more empty homes than homeless people. There are literally more churches than homeless people. We don't have a housing problem. We have a putting people inside of houses problem. Its straight up Greed over Need.
@@treasurehunter3369 Better than leave them stand empty and eventually crumble from lack of maintenance. There is absolutely no need for anyone on this planet to be without food or shelter. It's pure greed that has allowed this to happen.
ELISA is an acronym for a commonly used antibody test. There is nothing to freak out about (except you're tested positive for a disease). Just read it up on Wikipedia. An antibody test tests for specific antibodies in your blood which are marker that you had a specific illness. Like for TB, or Lyme, or a virus infection etc.
I love how thorough you are and don't exaggerate and go strictly by facts but do go over every theory/conspiracy. I wish I found your videos sooner. It was cool to see clips of you on the netflix series regarding the Elisa Lam case
No matter how many people cover her story I always watch it. Her story is so sad, mysterious, baffling and scary. There is virtually no way to solve it.
My favorite theory regarding this case was actually brought up by a user in r/UnsolvedMysteries. They refer to photos from her Instagram and Tumblr to suggest that Elisa enjoyed the aesthetic of rooftop cityscapes and general bird's-eye view photography. It's possible that she initially went to the top floor of the hotel to take some photos from the windows and then went back to the elevator to do some more exploring. The button for the 5th floor is on the right-hand column of the elevator panel, so if she pressed all the middle ones it was most likely done purposefully in order to check out other parts of the hotel. So now this is when the famous surveillance video starts and we see her accidentally press the hold button. It looks to me like her frantic waving is just her trying to trigger the sensors on the doors since she doesn't know why they're not closing yet, and perhaps to see if someone out of view did in fact press the button. Then she presses the button again, but upon closer inspection realizes what has happened and starts to count the time away on her fingers as she waits for the doors to close. She's acting strange, but I think this can be partly explained by personality quirks. I know that when I'm alone and waiting for something to heat up in the microwave I'll do weird movements similar to hers. Realizing that she's going to be on this floor for a while, she probably remembered seeing the fire escape from the windows when she was taking pictures and decided it would be a fun idea to go to the roof and check out the view from there. She’s clearly not worried about any alarms. On the roof she spots the red stairs that lead up to the landing above the water tanks. She goes up, sees the Hollywood sign, the lights of the city, feels accomplished with herself, and then decides to get down parkour style by jumping onto one of the tanks. Problem is, she doesn’t notice that the tank hatch is open. I know it seems like it would be very unlikely that someone would be able to jump straight into one of the open tanks from that 5ft or so high landing, but what if she landed on the tank, lost her balance, and then fell in? This could explain the scrapes on her knees that were reported. And of course we know what happens from here: she struggles to climb out of the tank, takes off her clothes in an attempt to float better and jump up to the hatch ledge, but eventually succumbs to exhaustion and drowns. This theory places more emphasis on the importance of the phone that was found but the police are refusing to speak further on. If she was taking pictures from the roof, the evidence would be on that phone.
This theory makes so much sense. The only thing that still makes me stop and not quite agree is the fact that her black lace panties were off. I can understand her pulling off the shorts and jacket and shirt because they would weigh her down. But at no point, as a female, would I ever think I needed to take off my tiny panties to be lighter in the water. The panties being off just seems strange to me.
When you push the "hold" button on an elevator, especially one located where people live permanently and have to move big objects like furniture, the door can remain open for anywhere from 1-3 minutes. If she would have waited another minute the door would have closed.
Mreffs101 hmm I’m not convinced. I lived in an old ass hotel turned apartment place with scary elevators and the hold button held the door for maybe thirty seconds.
@@widgie161 Well, there's footage of how long the elevator stays open at The Cecil when the "hold" button is pushed and it's a little over a minute. Also, having worked in a hotel and knowing the maintenance department, the "hold" button, even in newer hotels, can last up to 3 minutes.
I wish you had looked further into the bipolar disorder theory. This sounds sensitive but theories like these other ones can be so detrimental to people that suffer from mental disorders. If her sister and the complete autopsy were correct, I think the hotel and the manager were neglectful. You can call adult protective services or have a 5150 if you believe the person is a danger to themselves or other people. I've been on similar medications to Elisa, I had withdrawals after a day of not taking them......... My memories are blacked out from that specific day, but apparently I had been hallucinating and screaming in my room. I kept insisting there was an intruder when my parents said no one else was in the room. I was completely manic and out of my mind. So my parents had me 5150ed as my behavior got out of hand. I woke up in a children's ward not remembering how I ended up there.
Every time i see the elevator security footage it gives me chills. To me, it reminds me of how i was acting when i took too many mushrooms in college and thought i had become schizophrenic.
That’s so true. This whole time I’ve thought she must have taken something like mushrooms, it’d explain all the trippy movement and her ending up in a tank
I’m very late to this video, but first I want to thank you so much for the way that you addressed mental illness and made this a safe space. This case has always bothered me because of how many people seem to reduce her mental battles to something demoralizing and unfair to her and who she was. We all go through things mentally, some of us way more than others, and it’s so lovely to hear it acknowledged and understood.
There has to be more footage. Also, people had to have seen Elisa Lam that night. She stated that she was going out. People had to have seen her. Did someone follow her back?
Honest to God, this is the first time I've been really creeped out in a long time, her hands in that elevator footage AIN'T RIGHT, Y'ALL. Poor baby got mixed up with something weird in that hotel. Good video, Stephanie!
Probably aren’t still reading the comments on this post, but just a thought. The building across the street had a pool on top, perhaps she stayed there as AirB&B. She did have a mental break. Decided to go up to the pool for some reason, confusing where she was and not seeing that well. She got up to the roof. Just laid down on the roof, confused where the pool went. Then eventually decided it was a good idea to swim in the tank she found. Jumped in, couldn’t stay afloat for as long as needed and drowned in the tank because it wasn’t full.
Usually I get bored of hearing about a certain case after so many times but you always are so detailed with your research that I never skip it because I always find out new information.
I have solved it... haters. So many miserable people. And hurt people hurt, or try to. Thumbs downs just show as engagement on my channel, which helps it.
Ugh, this is one of those stories that has "hardcore" followers who research it, and they probably think this is a "lame" version of the story bc it doesn't involve a ton of speculation, heavy study of footage, tinfoil hats, etc. Lol. I honestly appreciate the way Stephanie did it bc she doesn't lead the viewer toward a pet theory. It keeps the mind open.
I was homeless for 10 years. I was that person in traffic with a sign gathering change, and when the cops made it too difficult for me to continue collecting change, I had to turn to allowing myself to be raped multiple times a day in exchange for the cash I needed to stay healthy, aka, prostitution. Presently, I am 4 years clean, something me and my drs never thought possible. I’m living proof that sympathetic medical and social practices can help people who are thought to be past the point of help. I’m also in my 2nd yr of college going into a career in Sciences.

I think the tragedy of this case, as with the Elizabeth Smart case, is that Elisa has been lost as a person and replaced with myth. These women were real humans who deserve to maintain their personhood.
Persona Personified
What does that even mean? You could make that point about any person in history, regardless of if they were murdered or not. Unless you knew Elisa Lam personally, you aren’t going to know who they really were as a person.
@@NeonRaptor-iq7hd How is that different from traditional media? Do you get upset about CNN or BBC reporting on murders?

Not just the 'think positive" or 'be kind to yourself' stuff, but, I don't know, take a drink of water, do ten pushups, etc.? :) I am 100% sure I have been suffering from depression almost my entire life, even though I've never been diagnosed and treated properly :( Hence, I'm not on any meds, and would really appreciate some practical advice from whoever knows what they are talking about.

@@jadejade4653 that's basically what I said
@@heathernikki5734 you said you feel sad when people call this case creepy...but it is creepy! I feel sorry for Elisa too, and would love to know what really happened to her😔
According to someone I know who is bipolar, this is a plausible interpretation:
She was spooked by a feeling of being watched or pursued, and she was hiding from someone or some imagined entity.
You are an advocate. Thank you.
Wonderfully written. She may have had mental health issues, and yes, in lieu of any more information, maybe it was a contributing factor. But the questions surrounding her death are far too vast to say definitely that this was the cause, and she is owed the same duty of care as anyone else, without prejudice.
MENTALLY ILL DO NOT DESERVE SECOND HAND JUSTICE. Fuck, thank you. That is a powerful sentence.
One hundred percent!!!!^^^^ VERY WELL SAID. 💯💯💯💯

I also thought it was pretty cool that their documentary included Stephanie's video covering The Elisa Lam story.
I totally agree with you. She got psychotic and accidentally drowned.
Having an ex husband that suffers from the same mental illness I can tell you this is easily possible for someone having a manic/psychotic break

i find it so frustrating that american pop/media/culture glorifies mental insanity and psychosis, but cannot seem to accept that these are devastating and frightening brain disorders. the type that can make you do things like end your own life in what might be seen as "bizarre circumstances", but to the patient, they were locked in a prison only they could sense. i agree 10,000% this shouldnt have been sensationalized and gobbled up as a conspiracy theory the way it has been by entertainment media giants. and they barely even shed light or resources/assistance for people who are currently struggling! no! it just shows us if you die as a result of a terrifying mental disorder, some big sexy LA studio will get the rights and the funding and will just make documentaries about you!!! rest in peace Elisa, you did not deserve this suffering, or this tragic ending.

Please take care of yourself.
This is not with all forms of bipolar disorder and you shouldn’t make it seem that way. People who know nothing about it read your comment and then assume everyone who has bipolar disorder is delusional and has hallucinations, which isn’t true.

Hello, fellow introvert ☺
My dad and I watched the documentary, and my dad who is a psychologist believes that she had a psychotic episode
I agree with your dad. It's easy to always assume someone else did it or want someone else to blame. Nothing on the elevator made me think somebody was after her.
Agreed. 🙌
But how did she end up in the water tank?
Hotels usually have the roof locked, and the water tank is also locked
Which means she maybe thought she just have an episode?

So it was basically a hotel full of impoverished and likely depressed people. That explains all the suicide. Not terrifying so much as it's heartbreaking.
Very true.

Your empathy for homeless people was moving so many people degrade homeless people
Wondering, where do you live?
I agree.
I definitely thought it was kind and empathetic that she took a moment to utilize her platform to speak about this.

Very well said
What's weird is when this was first discovered and plastered all over social media, I read an article saying the missing piece of the surveillance tape showed what looked to be her interacting with two guys that seemed to have handed her something that appeared be a small box that they assumed could have been drug related.

Aishling O'Neill yes so frightening, like a nightmare. So sorry for her.
It's a bit like shaking your knee when you're nervous.)

John Lordan said that one of the buttons she pushed was the ‘hold door’ button which held it open for 2 minutes

@@cametochangemyusername-can1295 drug addiction, without question
edit: I don't disagree with the sentiment of the OP, for the record.
@@Alex-sv7vt I agree wholeheartedly.
Kerese Chetty I never actually thought about her confusion from the doors not closing. Way to go PI Kerese. 🖤🖤
Kerese Chetty that’s what I believe too. She was trying to set the door sensors off.
Don't get why the LAPD didn't wanted to talk about the phone?
A simple we didn't find a phone or we are still trying to get data from the pbone would be something they would say if it's a regular case
@@ChrisAtheist that's the one suspicious part, to me.
THIS HAS BEEN MY THEORY FOR YEARS! i haven’t finished the video yet but i’m so pleasantly surprised to see someone else think this since people think i’m weird for thinking that
@tay steezy It does sound weird I admit - real sensory deprivation tanks need salt and things to help you float etc, and there’s still the question of how she physically managed to climb up
into it, but if she was feeling desperate and needed an escape from whatever was going on in her mind then I can see how she might have ended up trying it 🤔
this could be it but I still don't see how she could have gotten up to the roof without setting off the door alarm....

That LAM-ELISA test thing really is the granddaddy of eerie coincidences.
That's more like a synchronicity than a coincidence. There are many of those in this matrix and it suggests our reality is not as real as we think.
It's very strange but I've had a TB test before and I think a few others where I've seen ELISA. It's some sort of scientific term for the test assay, but I can't remember what.

Recanted visited the Cecil and knew you must have covered the Elisa Lam case. Look at how much you have grown since posting this!! Love you Steph
I lean toward this being a tragic accident, but it still creeps me out like nothing else and I understand why it’s such a captivating story. The elevator footage makes me so uneasy every time I see it!
You scared the crap out of me telling the story about the elevator game, Stephanie!😰😰
It gave me chills!!!
I feel like the LAPD didn’t bother with the case due to the fact that she was a foreign national. The paperwork, communication between both law enforcement entities, and the leg work that is used to handle cases of foreign nationals is pretty intense. This is not an excuse for LAPD to improperly investigate this case.
Who's here after the Netflix Cecil Hotel documentary?
me too. it's crazy how much better stephanie's video is than an actual netflix documentary
I thought they did Stephanie dirty, made her look like some sort of crazy obsessed person. They also painted the homeless, ex cons and addicts as evil and frightening

Treasure Hunter! Yes
@@treasurehunter3369 Yes? Tf
@@treasurehunter3369 Better than leave them stand empty and eventually crumble from lack of maintenance. There is absolutely no need for anyone on this planet to be without food or shelter. It's pure greed that has allowed this to happen.
The LAM ELISA TB test thing freaks me out. That can’t be a coincidence
The theory trying to make it out not to be seems far less plausible than it being a coincidence

No matter how many times I watched videos about Elisa... I still can’t get over how creeped out I feel about the elevator video.
her fingers get me every time
I still got the chills
It doesn’t make any sense.
I believe it was a ski walker or alien.
And that’s why her hands didn’t look normal
No matter how many people cover her story I always watch it. Her story is so sad, mysterious, baffling and scary. There is virtually no way to solve it.
I hope Netflix paid you at least a little for your clips featured
I hope so too but I'm guessing they only paid the RUclipsrs in "exposure."
Maddy Batheson But she was naked
This theory makes so much sense. The only thing that still makes me stop and not quite agree is the fact that her black lace panties were off. I can understand her pulling off the shorts and jacket and shirt because they would weigh her down. But at no point, as a female, would I ever think I needed to take off my tiny panties to be lighter in the water. The panties being off just seems strange to me.
@@AcornAcorn-gg9id maby they just got off with the shorts.
What gets me is that the elevator didn’t close THAT WHOLE TIME but seemed to close very quickly shortly after the weird stuff ends
I know! Honestly I think its a weird paranormal thing dont come for me
When you push the "hold" button on an elevator, especially one located where people live permanently and have to move big objects like furniture, the door can remain open for anywhere from 1-3 minutes.
@@widgie161 stephanie said in the comments that she pushed the hold button
Her Tumblr posts remind me so much of myself. RIP Elisa.
No matter how many times I see that elevator footage it always gives me the creeps! Adding spooky music did not help Stephanie! 😅
I’m not sure I’d survive if I found out I drank the water 🤢

I would probably just drop dead
I would throw up immediately I think. Glad I’ve never stayed at the Cecil hotel.
It’s crazy to me in this day and age there’s not more security footage of her.
There has to be more footage. Also, people had to have seen Elisa Lam that night. She stated that she was going out. People had to have seen her. Did someone follow her back?
There's more footage of her, this was all the police released. SMH, come on now.
i do believe there is more footage of her they just hiding it
I would like to hear more about this serial killer guy, Jack! That's insane they let him out.
Good news: I got an ad
Bad news: the ad was for a weird scenario game with romantic undertones 😂

Ugh, this is one of those stories that has "hardcore" followers who research it, and they probably think this is a "lame" version of the story bc it doesn't involve a ton of speculation, heavy study of footage, tinfoil hats, etc. Lol. I honestly appreciate the way Stephanie did it bc she doesn't lead the viewer toward a pet theory. It keeps the mind open.
There are “Yolanda’s” everywhere.
Maybe the dislikes are from elderly people who they think you're supposed to give thumbs down to a video about a sad subject... lol
I was homeless for 10 years. I was that person in traffic with a sign gathering change, and when the cops made it too difficult for me to continue collecting change, I had to turn to allowing myself to be raped multiple times a day in exchange for the cash I needed to stay healthy, aka, prostitution.
