Just one detail about handwashing from someone in healthcare: it is not the temperature of the water that is important, because, as you said, you would need to use boiling water for several minutes. Handwashing removes pathogens from the hands via friction. The soap aids in this removal. But the main mechanism of action is thorough friction to all areas of the hands and nails for a sufficient period of time (I was taught 20 seconds, but currently, during the pandemic, we are told 40 seconds).
I watched a video of someone using black dye instead of soap and demonstrating how to properly wash hands. The dye would colour the area scrubbed. It was incredible how little the dye moved over. You'd think with 1-2 motions, you'd be good, but they recommended 6 to cover the entire surface of the hand. Was pretty eye-opening
Entering the NICU they have two huge sinks in the area after the first door before you can go through the second door to the babies. They have a camera and everything. They have those surgical scrub brushes (like these www.amazon.com/MUNKCARE-Surgical-Brushes-Cleaning-Denture/dp/B07B6L7JZ9) and you use it to scrub up to the elbows for 45 seconds in a special soap they have. I can still remember it’s smell.
@@marquisdelafayette1929 Yes, it's all about the friction and duration of scrubbing. Seems primitive, but it is what is most effective, according to microbiologists.
@@Deliciousclagglue That's right. Temperature does matter if you're trying to destroy the bacterium/virus. But with handwashing it is not safe to use boiling water, obviously. The aim of handwashing is physical removal of the pathogen, not killing. The friction and duration of handwashing accomplishes the physical removal. I know this due to working in healthcare and also having taken a class in microbiology.
The Irish Famine wasn't exactly a true famine, it was a potatoe blight. We had other crops and livestock but the British stole them and shipped them to England. The Irish were forced to work in workhouses if they wanted any food at all. About half the population died of starvation or emigrated. I'm not really sure why it's called a famine, it's still even taught that way in our schools, which is odd!
When you said a police officer saw her entering a house in a town called "Corona" I'd just taken a sip of beer and almost chocked on it from huffing/gasping at the irony. Death by beer.
@@VegemiteQueen1 god i wish it had been, the poetic justice would have been perfect. The one time I pass up a corona and lemon for a coppers pale. Will not make that mistake again
I’ve got to be honest, at first I was on the side of Mary being the victim, but as time went on and they told her many times plain and simple how and why she was infecting people and wouldn’t be released. I get her initial distrust in the dr’s or the system... but in the end I think she knew the risks of what she was doing and maliciously did them anyways. Did she not wonder why she never got sick when literally every household she went to would? She’s the common denominator every time....
I believe that the health department figured out where the infection was coming from. They said that it came from her gallbladder or something, and that all she needed was surgery to have it removed. However, since I don't much care for Mary outside of what my microbiology textbook talks about, I don't know if this is accurate. I do know that the health department suggested surgery to Mary, but that she had refused. They may have found out more about where in the body the Typhoid had remained after Mallon had died.
I was on her side until she went to work at the hospital. A hospital, Mary?! This was great! Am I the only one who was surprised when the name Corona came up? Coincidences everywhere! You did a great job, as always! Edit: the town she was caught in was named Corona. I'm not talking about a coronavirus. Thank you for trying to educate me but I just meant the word Corona and not a disease.
@Lon Spector oh man. Why do you conspiracy theorists invade comment sections everywhere? There would be evidence that this disease was manufactured. It would be seen in the protein structure of the virus and the genetic information as well. What, you think that a group of scientists could make a virus out of nothing? That's not how genetic engineering works and there would be evidence of this genetic engineering. Keep your terror tactics to yourself.
I knowwww...its 1:46am and I have to be to work at 7am..ive watched evelyn boswell tonight snd said thats all I would watch tonight bc I have to gey up early...here I am tragedly watching another steph video over an hour long...I love them though. Just really wish I didnt have to go in soooo early bc I dare not wish steph videos were shorter
Yes. Enthralling. I had nightmares after a few of her more shocking videos. I dont mind too much its just her intensity. I feel how horrified and appalled she is at the atrocious things she researches.
Absolutely, I have binge watched everything during COVID. Sometimes I put her on in the background because I like the way she talks and tells stories lol even if I’ve watched it before - a few times. I also love her comments - she gives all sides of the story but can’t HELP but be witty - I love the bold comment about not vaccinating children “just sayin, don’t come for me.” 👌🏻 I don’t let many people be my friend - but I’d be friends with Stephanie. I even love her makeup.
My take was that it wasn't so much offensive as being a little... close. When many of us want to think about literally anything else. However, I think it turned out very well.
She was a victim until she willingly spread the disease... after that, she made her choice and was unhappy with the consequences of the path she’d chosen.
Agreed. The only thing is she didn't believe she was a carrier and never believed it since she herself was never sick, it wasn't well known to have asymptomatic cases and people were getting Typhoid during that time, she wasn't the only one who had it. After reading about the case, I believe she did think they were using her as an experiment. This could have been avoided if they had released her and given her a type of welfare payment to cover housing and food costs each month since her livelihood was taken away and she needed to stay away from others.
PLEASE do The Radium Girls!!!!!!! I just learned about this and I am SO fascinated what happened to these young women in the 20/30s. It would make a great Dark History!
It’s incredibly sad to think that Mary had no control over actually being an intermittent carrier of typhoid, she didn’t ask for that to be a part of her life. She also didn’t give consent to anything that was done to her, so I do believe that these things make her a victim. However at the same time it is upsetting that she still worked as a cook knowing that she could be infecting people. I understand that she had zero trust of the health department, but she even left her first chef job when people started to get sick. She clearly had to have known that she was a carrier. It’s so hard to make up my mind on victim or villain when I have no clue what it was like to live in this time
You should do a Dark History on the Irish famine. History books diminish the culpability of the English, and the full sinister true story is not very common knowledge, so it'd be educational as well! And definitely dark, it's a pretty harrowing record of sheer lack of every consideration for human life just to advantage one's own gain.
Agreed! Fun fact, we had enough crops during the famine to feed us all twice over. The British just took every single bit of them and knowingly left us with the blighted potatoes
I just love coincidences like that. Like the fact that in the "Tangled" Rapunzel is trapped inside her tower and can't go outside. Her kingdom is called Corona.
"SHE said NO" that's probably a big part of the reason they treated her like they did. Considering how every one of her employers said she was mild mannered I have to wonder how embellished the stories about her were
Yeah, for sure. And what are sailors then to them or is it OK to cuss as a man? I'm literally the most harmless person in the world but fuck if I can't contain my word spillage!
The fact Mary fled the women's hospital after the typhoid outbreak started strips me of all sympathy for her and her situation. Initially it's understandable to feel intimidated and afraid of someone when they're accusing you of carrying something when you yourself feel 'fine', however after much testing and consultations with medical professionals you'd think rational thinking would eventually take over. Her stubbornness really rubs me the wrong way.
Witness the number of today's Pentecostals, Trad. Catholics, and Muslims crowding into churches and mosques. They claim it's faith, but it's obviously pure stubborn self-righteousness.
I really wonder if she waa legitimately scared of getting sick. Like a phobia. Maybe hee parents died of disease, then her uncle, and all of these people she worked for. She sounded like a clean freak. Im sure she felt plagued by disease, but couldn't shake it. Im wondering if she legitimately was scared of getting sick
I didn’t have sympathy for her from the beginning. I don’t believe it was the first time she had heard she was a carrier. More than likely why she left Ireland. Common sense would tell me if everywhere I go ppl get sick 🤔 something isnt right
I agree. She was stubborn and selfish. It was obvious that the authorities had no motive or hidden agenda to hold her. I think they were very kind to her even though she had fought them every step of the way. She didn't seem what bit concerned at any point that others might suffer because of her recklessness. She wrote in a letter that they weren't being very Christian to her. Did she actually think she was acting moralistic in endangering the public?
Had Soper's original approach been more tactful, the whole situation may have been different. A little compassion and empathy go a long way. By the time they brought Mary in, she was too defensive to believe anything they told her.
Your message at the end.... made me so emotional and wanted to hug you!! I'm hoping that we can all show the same solidarity and kindness that we always do in the worst of times. I know that every day I lost a bit of faith in humanity but actually, I truly believe that most of us are kind and willing to help one another. Maybe I'm an optimist, I know it's so scary right now for everyone, and I don't know what will happen... but let's take it one day at a time. Thank you for being here for us!! We are here for you too, Steph!
I think it was absolutely necessary to quarantine her. Just like murderers who intentionally kill ppl are locked up, she was (whether intentional or unintentional) killing ppl everywhere she went. She had to be stopped. Even ppl who unintentionally kill someone are locked up & kept away from the public. She was made aware & continued on so something had to be done.
She’s both. A victim and a villain. How they treated her in the beginning made her a victim. The way she continues her life after being released knowing she’s a carrier, makes her a villain.
@@drewhempwood2113 I think she was being stubborn and refusing to believe it out of spite and anger at how they handled her. No way that after they told her that she was a carrier that she wouldn't connect the dots when people at many jobs she had kept catching typhoid. The fact that she left the hospital job after they had an outbreak because she probably KNEW there would be people looking for her because of it says that to me as well.
@@kiamaria331 shit maybe they thought that because she killed them she would be killed? And she was treated poorly by them all the way thru, i would be terrified, and since I felt fine, i would be very confused and maybe not want to believe it. Youd be surprised what people will convince themselves of when they dont want to believe you
I'm only 5'3 but long-legged and more than once have been told I have "a very distinctive walk."... In that way that you're like Um, is that a compliment or insult? Now I'm wondering if I "walk like a man." 😂 Tall and/or walking like a man women, we'll stick together!
The state of anxiety everyone is in is my normal state of mind. Honestly, I'm less anxious now because I actually feel "normal" now, and the abnormality of my feelings was a big part of my anxiety.
@Lon Spector We have a saying in Greece left over from ancient times: "Along with Athena, do your part." Faith in God is good, and though I don't personally believe, I'm glad others can find solace in their faith. However, please don't rely solely on God to protect you and your loved ones. You know He has a plan, but part of it is us all doing our part to be safe, considerate of others and take the precautions we need to stop the spread of disease. God will not negate terrible choices that we make - that's our own free will. So be careful, do what you can and stay safe!
I think she was smart enough to realize that typhoid followed her but didn’t want it to be true. She needed that denial and that’s why she was so hostile initially. Her fierce initial reaction makes me think she’d been accused before.
Really enjoyed this, it was a nice change of pace from hearing about dead children. I always look forward to your videos, but sometimes with Gannon, Evelyn, Thomas....my heart hurts. Doesn’t mean I won’t watch your videos when they come out, but I do appreciate the “Dark History” episodes xx
Same. I can't deal with the kids being murdered stories. It's too much. The missing kids stories I don't mind because it gets them out there to more people but the murders just hurt my heart and mind.
Yeah, I much prefer these types of videos personally. As obsessed with true crime as I am, I've never handled the cases about children very well, and I find current cases about children particularly upsetting. I get that it's relevant, but for my mental heath I can't watch it. I find topics like typhoid Mary fascinating, and strangely not as depressing?
I was thinking about this question literally yesterday, I watched a Drunk History episode and two other biography vids on her. I mean she was the first known asymptomatic case of typhoid in an age where science, medicine, and germs weren't commonly accepted or taught about. From her perspective, she was probably distrustful of authority figures being an Irish woman. And she was probably used to men telling her what she could and couldn't do. I think she was in denial, being told your an asymptomatic carrier of typhoid back then was crazy talk, and she probably thought everyone telling her to quit the only job that was making her a living wage was crazy. But at the same time, people died because of her ignorance. So while I feel for her, and it's obvious she didn't want to hurt anyone, I think quarantine was the only way to stop her. She definitely was a danger to society, but it's a shame how she was villainized. But if we can learn anything from Mary, it's that we should always WASH OUR DAMN HANDS. Thanks again for another well researched and thought out video!
I agree. They gave her several "outs" over the years but she was just too scared, ignorant, or stubborn to go along. That she knowingly went back to cooking is a crime justified her quarantine.
The fact that you start researching subjects more than a month in advance is amazing. It totally shows in your videos. My sister introduced me to your videos three days ago and you are without doubt my favorite youtuber of all time.
I feel like she started out as a victim but once she was aware that she was a carrier and then went on to gain employment cooking and spreading it even more that she became a villian.
I work in a grocery store: I’ve had a few rude customers but for the most part everyone is super nice and grateful. It’s made me happy because I’ve had several people ask for things to be bagged separately because they’re getting stuff for an elderly relative or a neighbor. It’s nice to see people coming together to help each other. Just a little pick me up. 😁
We learned a bit about her during my bacteriology class and she started out as a cook for sailors where there wasn't any sanitation while cooking. Guess the infection was only important when rich people got sick. Also fun fact taking antibiotics for typhoid fever make you more likely to become a carrier. If you get it today you just have to let it work its way out and keep yourself as healthy as possible!
I’m torn. I definitely have more sympathy for her now that I’ve watched your video, but I don’t think it exonerates her from all responsibility. I don’t blame her suspicion and wariness toward people given the climate of the time and her position. She was really irresponsible by continuing to work in a hospital after she was released, though!!
That doesn't excuse 50 people she killed by transmitting the Typhus If they didn't forcibly quarantine her, more would have died painful deaths be cause she wouldn't change jobs. All she had to do was stop cooking.
just to let you know, i am having to work from home in early pregnancy, with 2 teenagers in the house. Having your video's on whilst i work is utterly soothing, and gives me an escape
@@asmrtpop2676 They start training us from elementary school to come in while sick by issuing awards to kids that never miss a day. My last company gave out rewards, in addition to awards, for people that never took a sick day. I think there was even a special party if you worked at the HQ. I hope 2020 resets the way we look at health care, and worker's rights/benefits. We rate worse than "3rd world countries" in a number of aspects and it is unacceptable. At the very least, they should force sick people to wear masks when they overwork them, like they do in Hong Kong.
Yes for some people it sure was! Smith is a classic one. I meant more modern coincidences though. For instance there is a lady who lives in my area who’s last name is Barkley and she runs a dog grooming business. 😂
I absolutely love your history stories. It's like being taken back in time and seeing how things were. You're really good at painting pictures with words.
Speaking of germ theory, it took such a long time for doctors to accept that they were in fact infecting their patients by not washing their hands. For example they were doctors who are going from the morgue to the maternity ward. That’s why when doctors started washing their hands and sterilizing the equipment that maternal and neonatal death rates decreased.
Indy RAWR Way back people thought bathing was worse than not bathing because you “sat” in your filth and would “get sick”. So no, they didn’t think it was gross.
The sad part is that they imprisoned the guy who first discovered this. He tried all his life to tell them to wash their hands and they just laughed and called him crazy
The 1881 death of President Garfield was as much a case of medical malpractice as it was an assassination. Garfield's chief physician, Dr. Willard Bliss, was, unfortunately, somewhat typical of his time. He was a doctor who didn't believe in germs or hand washing. He bungled Garfield's treatment from start to finish. It took 79 days for Garfield to die from complications of sepsis after being shot.
As a nurse who teaches Infection Control for group houses, I have a video that uses Mary's story. In that video it shows actual "Health Department" documents in which Mary claims she never washed her hands while cooking, thinking it was unnecessary.
It would have been nice to have some scientific proof that her gall bladder was filled with typhoid. You should think it would somehow have been documented, the tests. Maybe they should have saved her gall bladder for future studies.
When Mary left Ireland, a lot was happening in the country concerning the British suppressing the Irish. That's why a lot of Irish people came to America around that time.

Oh, Stephanie, you just made my whole day. I needed this more than I could ever explain to you. Thank you for occupying my mind for an hour and a half! I appreciate you so much!
Villian. She denied seeing the pattern of people falling Ill around her. I feel sorry for her to an extent. But no after so long she went from victim to villian.
Yeah but the courts hardcore failed her and gave her no other choice! Nowadays she'd have been gotten workers comp or disability (if it weren't cureable). Instead they said "don't do what u do" and let's be honest--how much different is she from modern day Anti Vaccers?
@th1smomentisfate She did try to sue for lost wages so she wouldn't have to work, or be healthy person locked in quarantine which was probably just as expensive. She tried the lawyer routes. They bungled this from the beginning and put her face on the newspaper fgs! Who would hire her after that? Maybe if they didn't treat her like a criminal, stereotypicalize her origins and reinforce social tropes with her, kidnapped her with a bus and throw her in a quarantine hospital for examination-- she might have trusted what they said. I think she was just treated how she was and that's about it. She DID get external testing that came up negative. Maybe she thought the rich people were scapegoating her to keep their respectableness in tact. I wouldn't trust a University Hospital of that time either. So.. she tried. You can't criminalize stupid--or half of free America would be locked up.
@@melme33 yeah you cant criminalize it but that doesn't mean what she did wasn't wrong 🙄 diseases arent even nearly as deadly or threatening as they used to be, but even today a person would limit contact even if they don't have a confirmed diagnoses and are suspicious of it.
@@aliyahl112 There were thousands of cases of Typhoid in New York City while she was there! Gonna lock up ALL of them, and anyone they might have come in contact with? I'm not saying she's right. I'm just saying what happened to her was wrong.
My friend's mom has one of those too, and she used to hang it above the door so as to remind everyone in the family where they came from and what their ancestors had to endure so as to make a better life in this country (and as a reminder to be grateful). She also voted for and still a big supporter of Trump, which to me is like WTF. (Hopefully this won't start any sort of political arguments in the comments, that's not my intention - I just seriously don't understand the logic. Maybe that's because my family emigrated more recently than hers, and half of them are from Mexico, so of course that influences my own opinions.) But yeah, the Irish had it really hard too when they first arrived in the US!
heathalysa Much of my huge Irish family votes for him too. I don’t want to get into a debate either but I totally get it. In fact, if your relatives are legal immigrants I would think they’d be the biggest backers of border security. They went through the process the right way, put in the work, are probably proud of that and want to be protected from unknown and untrackable illegal immigrants just like everyone else. Not just Mexican but from everywhere. I’d feel even more resentful of people coming in illegally if I had done it the right way. There are tons of Latinos that support border protection for that reason. Trump (and everyone else) welcomes legal immigrants. It’s people who sneak in without doing the right thing that people have a problem with. Just a couple weeks ago here in Chicago a little toddler girl was snatched and molested in a bathroom stall by an illegal immigrant (convicted felon) who had recently been released from jail but not held for ICE for deportation because we’re a sanctuary city. So because our mayor wants to be political and not follow the law, this man was free and ended up molesting a little girl. If he had been held and deported he wouldn’t have been here to harm anyone. These things happen a lot. It’s not about ethnicity. It’s about the fact that we have law in place to protect us from these things and super lefty politicians are ignoring the law and subjecting us to harm. Imagine if the little girl had been your daughter or the daughter of your Mexican aunt for example. It’s just awful. So I have several relatives who vote for trump because the policies aren’t anti-immigrant whatsoever. They’re anti-ILLEGAL immigrant and protect us as well as boost the economy and provide opportunity for those legal immigrants to work and thrive in this country.
@@MK-Hogan Yeah, everyone on both sides emigrated here legally, as did my Eastern European partner. Again, not trying to make things political (I know, I'm the one who brought it up) but I'll just have to agree to disagree with you on the "Trump welcomes legal immigrants but not illegal immigrants" opinion. Are there super lefty politicians who should be enforcing the law, but instead are sweeping it under the rug? Yes, there are, and I'm certainly not voting for them!. There are also many, many more people who are coming here legally by applying for asylum and being held in cages. (This isn't just Trump's fault here BTW, I also disagree with how Obama did some things too. I personally don't consider myself a member of either party, or a partisan person in general.) This is something that I've followed closely since it applied to my own partner's immigration status as well as working for a law firm with lawyers working on these types of cases pro-bono. Of course my family supports border security, but you also have to realize that 60, 70 years ago, it was much easier to emigrate to the United States and do it all legally. The immigrants I know support border security but do not support throwing innocent people in detention facilities when they've done nothing wrong (again, it is legal to come to the US and apply for asylum). It might not be an issue of ethnicity for you and your friends & family, but it certainly is for others. And don't forget the fact that Trump has vocalized his opinions on Mexicans in particular (although I guess you have to admit he said "and I guess some are good people"). I would also like to add that I am a blonde-haired, blue-eyed white person (Mom's side came here from Germany to escape the Nazis) and, most likely because people don't realize I'm part Mexican, have overheard/been told maaaaany things from people who likely wouldn't have said anything to me had they realized my background. I do appreciate you answering my question and trying to explain your point of view, and I absolutely disagree and am angered by any danger to society being allowed free rein. It's disgusting. Unfortunately, the policies and rhetoric of the Trump administration has not yet convinced me that this has anything to do with welcoming legal immigration while enforcing the law upon illegal immigrants; thankfully, Steve Bannon, who has explicitly stated his disdain for ALL immigrants, is no longer a part of the Trump administration. But there still hasn't been much of an improvement since then.
I really appreciate you talking about how Mary thought and felt about the situation. I think that insight really reflects the mindset of people in denial about the current situation, possibly healthy and infected and spreading the virus. Thank you Stephanie.
Blessed during these trying times with a Stephanie video that’s over an hour 😭😭😭🙌🏽🙌🏽🙌🏽🙌🏽 Thank you for continuing to give us things to distract our minds for a bit ♥️
Why? Why in that time when infant mortality was so high and people died from catching cold would she assume it was her? It requires an understanding of transmission that even today can be a hard sell.
@@theConquerersMama Before being told? She may not have understood like we understand today, but she wasn't stupid. She most likely knew something was very wrong. People, then, did understand how it spread. Even if we were to say they didn't, the upper class did not show much sickness while the lower classes were not only suffering from it but dying in droves was probably noticed by the general public. So, yes, I can definitely see her gradually picking up on how strange it was that almost every wealthy family she happened to serve contracted the same thing, Typhoid, a disease that's usually much rarer for them, during her time there. How not only did they contract it, but how it became so prevalent that it could take out almost the entire household, including the staff, then when she finally left, all went back to normal. On that note, I also think that while she might have thought she was blessed, she still noticed it was odd that despite regular heavy exposure to these sick households and how it almost seemed to follow her, she never got Typhoid herself. I think all of this didn't click until they talked to her. That might be one of the reasons she reacted as she did. Her fear and suspicions that something was off were validated.
I agree with OP. Obviously she would’ve noticed and thought it odd. I definitely think she put it together, even if she didn’t understand the exact science of how it was happening. We’re talking about approx 100 years ago, not 5,000 jeez, people in the past weren’t idiots.
@@theConquerersMama Yeah, I also think trying to analyze her story with a modern lens is hard. Definitely needs to be viewed within the scientific understanding and way of life in the early 1900s rather than with today’s science.

She knew she had it. At the beginning I thought maybe she didn't, but the moment I heard she'd run away from homes when they got infected... This woman knew she was infectuos. She didn't want to infect people, probably, but she very well knew she did, that's why she kept running from authorities. And she probably didn't want the surgery performed on her because she was scared, that much is true, but if she honestly didn't think she was infected, she'd have given the samples requested. She didn't care if she infected people in my opinion, and they were absolutely right to detain her since she refused to take any precaution of any sort. She was completely unreasonable and I do not believe any of her rights was violated, they simply protected the public from her since she wouldn't do it herself. I am 90% sure she knew she infected people, that's why she kept changing homes she worked in, because she didn't wanna be tied into the epidemic. A very selfish woman if you ask me, not a monster who went around spreading a disease on purpose, but surely someone who didn't care about other people's safety more than her own "right" to walk freely, even if it meant she infected innocent people. Maybe she was a bit in denial, but if she literally didn't believe she had typhoid fever she would've given the samples. She had many opportunities to save herself from this situation, she didn't take them, and I really cannot feel much empathy for someone that unreasonable. It is surely unfortunate she got infected and not her fault, but the way she handled the situation was the worst possible way she could have. I can't believe there are people who believe she should've been allowed to walk freely, she was a danger, whether she wanted to be or not

But back then it wasnt known for anyone to be "asymptomatic" mary was the VERY FIRST PERSON EVER to be discovered. ..like it was Impossible to them that this was possible. So even if she thought it was a pattern, back then they were ignorant to that scientific fact
Nobody is acknowledging she was a child still. A Irish Catholic woman. This girl was in fear of her life. So logically we have common sense. She was probably worried about her well-being .
Brilliant video!!!! My mother used to call us Typhoid Mary when we were kids. With 4 kids my mom knew if one of us came down with an illness it was only a matter of time before all of us had it. I never knew the full story behind it. I love learning about these stories from you, thank you!
As someone who suffers with apocalyptic anxiety so this time has been crazy.... only thing that’s been helping me is your videos, your calm voice that’s I’ve become so used to is what’s helping me sleep and or just relax. Missed you!
Bambi Garcia it’s definitely scary times, we just have to believe that we’ll be ok. This WILL be over some day. I hope that we grow and learn as a society. I pray that you may find peace during this difficult time ❤️
Ok, I initially felt bad for her when she was unknowingly getting people sick but then after being told that she was a typhoid carrier and her continuing to do what she wasn’t supposed to, was like she didn’t care that she was purposely getting people sick.
This was fantastic!!! I knew about "Typhoid Mary" but I had understood that she was a lot more belligerent and willful in her spreading of the disease. I really appreciate this perspective.
Hy everybody...i wanna share this: today we have big drop in % of new infected people in Milan...numbers were 12-14% increase whole week, but today is 6%. quarantine started 2 weeks ago exactly....we hope it will continue to drop. i just wanted to remind all od you how important is to stay in house. i hope you all stay safe and healthy ❤

Exactly. If they had just explained this first to friend and/or family, then have them and Mary sit around to look at the evidence and come up with a possible solution, Mary probably would've been more willing to listen. I mean, I sure wouldn't be reasonable to a medical group if they snatch me from my home and essentially treat me like an animal to be poked, prodded, and stared at.
I haven't even started and I already know this is going to be good! Hope all of you guys as well as Stephanie are doing okay! Hope this madness ends soon.
Honestly ,as someone who comes from a family of immigrants myself. I can understand the distrust. Also it wasn't uncommon for immigrants to leave to make a life for them in America and then send for their family once they are established. This practice is still done today. So to me it makes perfect sense why she left at 15. I think a lot of medicine was unknown at the time. We were definitely in the dawn of medical technology. The fact that they singled her out. Says to me that she worked for the wealthy were the others did not. Therefore she was a problem.
Oh btw Steph just wanted to tell you a little of how I'm feeling and what I'm going thru. I was diagnosed with clinical depression/anxiety years ago so needless to say I've been shaking so bad . My anxiety is so bad. I have constant butterflies in my stomach that won't go away. And the inside of my body feels like it's trembling too. But I'll tell ya watching your videos have mellowed me out a bit. And like when I get up to stand, my legs start shaking with spasms so I can't walk immediately after i get up. I wait for the spasms to stop and then I can start to walk. If I try to walk while my legs are shaking, I feel like I'll fall and hurt myself. And with what we've been going thru as a country I don't even think an ER visit would be a good idea. But yeah you have calmed me down and calmed my trembling down a lot for now. So I really appreciate you girl. You're a blessing. Please stay safe Stephanie.☺💙
Hey girl, I’m sorry to hear that and am quite pleased to hear Stephanie has helped you so very much. Might I suggest some sort of benzodiazepine, like Valium or Xanax? I’ll be rooting for you, as someone with depression and anxiety (although mine manifests in a different way). Keep up the great work! Love & Light from Miami🦚✌🏼 Stay safe mate🌎🙏🏼
12:52 An important note, the Pilgrims, while they came to the "New World" seeking religious freedom, were not fleeing an "oppressive Catholic government." They were English; they wanted their congregations to be separate from the Church of England. Edit: fixed a typo
you are honestly my favorite youtuber for content like this. i've attempted to watch other ones and they are just...annoying and copy paste what they find on google but you really seem to do really good research and give really detailed information and it's just entertaining to listen to you do these.
Gina Jennings for an entire year every video I uploaded got 20 dislikes before I even got 3 likes. I’ve never done anything controversial... I’ve never been mean or made anyone upset. I’m just a regular channel. I think youtube doesn’t want certain people to grow or there’s 1 or a few people with 20 accounts who do all the dislikes. A dislike is still engagement but if you’re getting that many so quickly it does suppress your video
@@Jahlen.johnson I'd guess that a big portion of dislikes are people on a touchscreen that accidentally bumped the dislike button, I've caught that happening on my phone before
I think Soper tainted the whole thing by being too forward and literally walking up to her like "Yes, hello, may I have your fluids?" He was too eager and frankly should have stepped back to realize not everyone was going to be as hyped as he was about diseases. That would completely sour my thoughts on him entirely, and even if someone else came and asked, I would immediately suspect him being behind it. I also agree that they kept her because of how much trouble she gave them. If there were others around, they could have served as easier, perhaps more complacent "test subjects" depending. I don't think they had a right to detain her the first time, though it would have been for the "greater good" to do so. Just like right now as much as I would like the idiots running around in large groups to be forcibly contained, there's no real legal way to do that. It's careless, but they have the right to do it unless they're knowingly infecting people, as in they have it and are straight up giving it to people out of malice. That's when I feel it's appropriate to get them away from people. Mary wasn't initially being malicious. She was just living her life. Where I completely see her as the bad guy is when she knowingly went off and ended up contaminating people. No matter what happened to her, that wasn't a good look. It was irresponsible. I was on her side until then. She was in denial for sure, but part of her had to understand that it followed her. Maybe she was just being defiant, but that's a reckless way to be defiant. They couldn't convince her that she was the problem. I think at that point because of how, for lack of a better word, contaminated the situation was she shut down that possibility completely. Thanks for this. I feel like I needed to think critically about something, and this hit the spot. Stay safe. xoxo
Thank you for making things feel normal in a little way during this time. I’m worried and stressed out as well, but while I’m watching your videos the world feels okay for that time and I forget about my fears. Thank you for that ❤️ I hope that your friends and family remain healthy and happy! Your a gem Stephanie, love your channel!
I don’t know how to answer all of your questions, but I just want to say thank you for being there. Your voice is magical and I really respect where you’re coming from.
I've been inhaling your videos, especially with this self isolation thing in place! Here's a question, though, have you ever thought about asking your viewers about crimes that happened to them/family members & making a video about it with them? I've just finished your first part about Alissa Turney and I loved the interview element of the video playing a role. And I bet people have some fascinating stories! (My mom even has one: her dad was murdered by her mother in cold blood in the 70s. My mom remembers hearing her mother plan it. Her mom apparently shot him and tried to frame it on my mom's sister - whom she had also tried to murder more than once. She only got a prison sentence of a few years and got out on parole, re-got custody of her kids, tried to murder my mom's step dad & my older brother several times before my mom was able to cut her out of our lives.)
Amazing as always! And a good lesson to us all right now, to practice crazy good hygiene! Just cuz you don't feel sick doesn't mean you can't hurt someone else. Love to you all!
I believe shes a victim turned villain by the system. They turned her life upside down, abused her and denied her basic rights. When she attempted to take her rights back by filing a lawsuit with actual damages, they dismissed her. A classic case of the bullied becomes the bully.
Yes, I agree! They should've given her a settlement of some sort. How did they expect her to live, without being able to do what she did for a living, cook?! I sometimes feel that people were less empathetic back in those times.
@@reneenayfabnaynay5679 Victim blaming is an unfortunate thing. Alot of people are so trained to look only at one side, they forget there are always two sides for every story. As for the system, sometimes they set you up for failure, then they blame you for failing.
I think she probably wasn’t well educated and probably had a hard time believing them when they told her she was sick. She didn’t feel sick, you know? And apparently these asymptomatic carriers are very rare. It makes sense that she wouldn’t want to believe it because it would mean the end of her career. She was definitely mistreated. It’s a tough one though for sure because of how dangerous the disease is.
Lon Spector She was also kidnapped and then held against her will and had her personal medical info released to the media. I can understand why she didn’t cooperate. She’s clearly a polarizing figure
Stephanie, you are one of my favourite True Crime presenters. Thank you for always giving us such interesting and meticulously researched stories. I completely understand your remark that you are finding it hard to concentrate on things right now. I feel the same, and have started obsessively watching prepper videos. The more I watch, the more hopelessly unprepared I feel to protect and provide for my family. It is a very bad idea and I should stop immediately! I keep trying to remind myself that all we can do is prepare our best with what we can obtain, be sensible with hygiene, and be of good courage for our loved ones. Something that helps a great deal is to lose myself in one of your crime stories; thank you so much. Love and best wishes to your and your dear family from Australia. You are in my thoughts and prayers from Australia, mother to mother.

I tell my kids to scrub their hands and sing happy birthday two times.
I'm not really sure why it's called a famine, it's still even taught that way in our schools, which is odd!
laurapirate wow I didn’t know that!
Plus it was researched that potato was particularly bad for them due to the diabetic genetic tendencies. And the prevalence of blood type B. :(

Thanks for repeating the video.
🤦🏻♀️
I hardly expect her to have had the kind of modern medical understanding back then that most people still do not have today.
Morgan S I agree completely

@First Last I edited my comment, thanks!
Lily Maria Corona is latin for crown
@Lon Spector oh man. Why do you conspiracy theorists invade comment sections everywhere? There would be evidence that this disease was manufactured. It would be seen in the protein structure of the virus and the genetic information as well. What, you think that a group of scientists could make a virus out of nothing? That's not how genetic engineering works and there would be evidence of this genetic engineering.

@@kristinaerickson2353 I think Lon was actually agreeing with you.
My take was that it wasn't so much offensive as being a little... close. When many of us want to think about literally anything else. However, I think it turned out very well.
@Lon Spector Stop with the stupid phrases.
She was a victim until she willingly spread the disease... after that, she made her choice and was unhappy with the consequences of the path she’d chosen.
Agreed, she was told what the go was and flat out refused to give a shit

I believe Georgia Marie did a video on the radium girls.
Oh yes that was awful!
** I just did my senior project on this!
Very very interesting subject would be great for Dark History
Varpu Reiniaho brilliant idea and I agree. This needs to be told by someone like her because the attention to detail would be eye opening for sure.
Agreed! Fun fact, we had enough crops during the famine to feed us all twice over. The British just took every single bit of them and knowingly left us with the blighted potatoes
i second this! the famine plot by tim pat coogan is a fantastic look at the "famine" or as its known in ireland, genocide

Coming from an ex catholic, it’s a catholic thing. The church still to this day encourages all kinds of ignorance.

She didnt think she really had it she thought it was a conspiracy and that they wanted her killed. She proved that by staying in that prison
@@drewhempwood2113 I think she was being stubborn and refusing to believe it out of spite and anger at how they handled her. I think she was smart enough to realize that typhoid followed her but didn’t want it to be true. She needed that denial and that’s why she was so hostile initially. Her fierce initial reaction makes me think she’d been accused before.

Awww thank you so much!!! I’m so glad she suggested my channel!
A suggestion: the kidnapping of Zephany Nurse, a South African case
YES
Yes, totally messed up story, but very interesting. So many lives ruined.
This sounds like a great idea. Please, Steph!
I’m torn. I definitely have more sympathy for her now that I’ve watched your video, but I don’t think it exonerates her from all responsibility. I don’t blame her suspicion and wariness toward people given the climate of the time and her position. She was really irresponsible by continuing to work in a hospital after she was released, though!!
That doesn't excuse 50 people she killed by transmitting the Typhus
If they didn't forcibly quarantine her, more would have died painful deaths be cause she wouldn't change jobs. All she had to do was stop cooking.

Like most Americans.
People think this is a good thing but it’s just a sign someone is unhealthy and also lacks compassion for others.
Just an aside - I always really like it when people have names that relate to their profession - Dr Soper (Soaper) the sanitation engineer 🧼🛁🧴

It's crazy! They had no idea or thought it was gross?
Indy RAWR Way back people thought bathing was worse than not bathing because you “sat” in your filth and would “get sick”. So no, they didn’t think it was gross.
It’s crazy how simple an idea to wash your hands is still a very new idea in the realm of medicine

I do agree she should have been compensated or put on disability since she wasn't allowed to cook anymore. But otherwise she made her choices.
My aunt has one of those original ‘No Irish Need Apply’ signs.
Wow, that’s amazing 😮
MK Hogan oh that’s dark lol

I mean she HAD to wonder how big of a coincidence it was that so many people would become infected when she came into contact with them.
She probably was in big time denial or at least would think at first
@@theConquerersMama Yeah, I also think trying to analyze her story with a modern lens is hard.

Stay safe. xoxo
Yes!! Let’s keep our brains and hands busy! Great points!
Great job on this!
Just what I needed. Thank you for the content and hope everybody is safe over there!
Your soothing voice is such a distraction from the crazy! Please keep the content coming!
You’re awesome, Stephanie. Definitely doing your part!
I'd love to see a Dark History on Patty Hearst!
that would be fascinating
Thank you for making things feel normal in a little way during this time. I’m worried and stressed out as well, but while I’m watching your videos the world feels okay for that time and I forget about my fears. Thank you for that ❤️ I hope that your friends and family remain healthy and happy! Your a gem Stephanie, love your channel!
I don’t know how to answer all of your questions, but I just want to say thank you for being there. Your voice is magical and I really respect where you’re coming from.
My husband was laid off from his job yesterday and this video was such a great distraction. Thank you for that! ❤️
What state are you in? We have places hiring in Philadelphia.
Incredible story!! Love your videos 💞💞💞
Continue to staff safe
Thank you! You too!

Victim blaming is an unfortunate thing.
The thing is, the now "bully" bullied innocent people - and killed them =(
Stephanie, you are one of my favourite True Crime presenters.
Clare Sutton Every day i tell myself i need to stop watching those prepper videos. Then I watch more. My grocery bills have shot up and i’m currently dehydrating food. I’m so paranoid.
@@loiscassels8966 it is a comfort to know that others feel the same! My grocery bills are also going up and up! The worst case scenario is that we overprepared, and have lots of things to donate to a food bank one day, right? Hugs from Australia. :0)
Clare Sutton I don’t think we can ever be over prepared. Let’s make a pact to stop watching those prepper videos, OK? ❤️🇨🇦
@@loiscassels8966 It's done! xo
Clare Sutton 👍
Perfect timing! Was just thinking about how I needed some more Stephanie Harlowe in my life.
