I absolutely loved Cedar Point when we went for a school trip during my 4th grade year in the late 90s. An amusement park with everyone in my class that was able to go? Hell yea, sign me up. Some of my favorite memories riding coasters at that park during that trip. Rode so many rides that I still felt like I was on one when riding back to the hotel on the charter bus. As an Ohioan who lives a short drive from Sandusky, I'm proud to say you have done the Park justice so far, I excitedly await the next installment of this series!!!
Magnum is the origin of my obsession with roller coasters. I was about 7 years old and I remember being terrified while waiting in line. That fear quickly turned into sheer adrenaline and joy after that first drop. Such great memories doing marathon rides on Maggie at night too!
I’ve been to Cedar Point a few times and it NEVER gets old! There is a certain magic to Magnum. It’s like playing a vintage guitar. It gets you right in the jellies.
I never knew how lucky I was growing up going to cedar point every year. I remember walking under Magnum to get in the park from the hotel and water park and riding it last thing at night a bunch of times unltil Raptor which became my new obsession. I actually kinda miss stuff like Disaster transport (and Pirate ride) though, had a charm you can't really put your finger on.
Proud to be a regular at cedar point. I grew up on this amusement park and it holds such a great place in my heart because it sparked my love for roller coasters.
I was one of the Magnum XL-200 Ride Hosts for the 2015 and 2016 seasons. Absolutely still my favorite ride at that park, both to ride and to operate. In my extensive test rides, I found that the seats in Car 1-Row 3 and Car 6-Row 1 are the best for the airtime. Operating the ride was a nonstop race to get the trains out as quickly as possible. In 3 train operation, there's a time limit set by the automatic brake operations in the Ready Brakes (Brakes just before turning right into the station). If you don't get a train unloaded, loaded, checked and dispatched less than 35 seconds after the previous one clears the lift hill, that previous train will slam into the Safety Brakes after Tunnel 3. Those brakes are so strong, that I've observed Car 3 being lifted off of the track and suspended in the brake caliper while its road wheels spin freely. By my napkin math, the trains leaving that third tunnel are traveling on an average day, 35-40 mph. Timing the impulse of the brakes, I found that they stop the train in less than a second. This makes the Safety brakes stop you with a force of >2G. Naturally something to avoid, so most of the Ride Hosts on platform are trying their best to move things along as quickly and safely as possible. Somehow or another, always being at the edge of getting those trains out on time wasn't very stressful. At one point I was the leadership in charge of the ride for an hour, and set an all time record for the rides current operating system (installed in 2014) for most dispatches in an hour at 44. Based on our testing, I believe the theoretical maximum is 45, but the margin for error is so negligible that it would have to be done like clockwork.
What a trip down memory lane! Thank you for your work on Cedar Point. I remember when Gemini was the new coaster. The campground was close by and I remember waking up in my Aunt and Uncle's pop-up camper hearing the trains being run for morning tests. Oh the anticipation! Cedar Point is still great, but I do miss the days when there were more trees. Looking forward to seeing what they do with the new boat ride planned for next year's big anniversary... I used to love the old Paddlewheel Excursion.
@@ExpeditionThemePark Actually, I didn't go on opening year. I was too afraid to ride any big coasters until my first ride on The Beast in 1990. I took my first ride on Magnum a few weeks later.
@@nothanksguy Magnums trains use the same chassis as Gemini, in fact Magnums trains are almost identical to Geminis train the only differences being the fiber glass shell and having upstop wheels instead of upstop pads
We went to Cedar Point in the early 2000's. We went on every single roller coaster in the park! My favourite was the Millennium Force, and we actually rode it twice! When I laid down that night, it literally still felt like I was on a roller coaster still! It was so much fun, but I definitely couldn't do it now!
Thank you for such an informative video, I grew up going to Cedar Point every summer when I was a kid. We stayed at the Breakers most years. I do remember years where we only went for the day, most likely during tough economic years on my father, but our parents would never let us as kids know it at the time. I remember feeling like it was something special, like not all the kids I knew were able to. A few years later as my two sisters and I got a bit older were always allowed to bring our friends with us. I remember the first year our parents got two rooms, so they could have a bit of a vacation themselves. And we had a bit of freedom. So it was pretty cool to be there for a few days with someone ya knew and had free roam of the place. The first few years I remember not being tall enough to get on the Roller coasters, which was fine with me I was scared of the big rides. That was in the early eighty's, the only big coasters at the time were the Blue Streak, Corkscrew, and the Gemini. I remember that first year when I was finally tall enough to ride the roller coasters and my younger sister wasn't yet, so we tried to 80's up her hair with Aquanet, so she was tall enough, and it worked!! We rode the Blue Streak first, then the Corkscrew and last to ride was the Gemini but I was terrified, my older sister got me to go on with her. I was scared to death the whole way up the first hill, but rode more times in the next few days. Lots of great memories of Cedar Point, first time I got a kiss from a girl was in the video game arcade located on the midway under the chairlift , lol. I haven't been to the park in many years since moving out of Ohio. I have been to many Six Flags parks over the years, they all seem rather small compared to Cedar Point. Thanks for bringing back many great memories of that place. Seeing this video really brought it back for me. Must make future plans for a visit.
Cedar Point is epic. We took a road trip from Minnesota. Our family had season passes to Valleyfair and made the drive for the Opening of Millenium Force. Takes multiple days to enjoy all it has to offer.
I credit this ride for helping me overcome my fear of roller coasters. I was 8 years old when it opened, but didn't ride it until I was 14. When I was a kid, I was both fascinated by and afraid of coasters; I would ride some of the smaller ones, but didn't really enjoy them, and though I slowly worked my way up to larger ones like Gemini, Magnum was out of the question. Once I rode it, though, I was hooked, and I've been a coaster nut ever since. Thanks, Magnum!
@@ConceptualCoasters You know Phantom, King's Island isn't bad... but my comment was more general beyond just roller coasters. There just ain't much in Ohio to get people excited beyond amusement parks... Despite that, unfortunately when King's Island got bought by Cedar Fair (including the other two parks) it stopped being really about artistry and offering something different for the riders, it became more about "what can we make money on?" While parks try to be more about the latest and greatest, it is more about making money than really exciting visitors and producing something really visionary. Making a profit isn't a bad thing... but when guests to your park become a side consideration and it all comes down to debits and credits on a balance sheet you have a tendency to forget the reason the park is there - to entertain people.
Great seeing footage of the Jumbo Jet, the 1st coaster I rode at CP in 1976. Rode on the Magnum it's inaugural season, and a few times since. My favorite coaster!
@@coastaku1954 true I'm never ridding magnum xl200 again after this year unless it gets new trains. Even the so called padding didn't improve the ride.
@@ArrowThrills If the bar is the problem here's the trick: 1. Don't staple yourself leave some room between your legs and the bar. 2. After lowering raise your legs by doing a tippy toes motion with your feet. This will prevent the ride op from stapling you 3. After the train leaves the station hold up the bar with your hand for the entire ride this prevents the bar from coming down and stapling you. If you do this you should avoid the theigh crush issue. Yes you could argue a ride shouldn't have to be ridden this way to enjoy it but Magnum is 30 years old and wasn't designed with computers. It's amazing it even runs at all
Worked at Cedar Point for 6 years. Us Thunder Canyon boys had to clean up after Magnum at night since it was before mixed crews. It's amazing what lost articles you find under a coaster. 30 years and the Magnum is still sinking, right?
my friend lost her sunglasses on the first hill of the Blue Streak. she's from Ghana and it was her first and last roller coaster ride ever. it did her in
@@ExpeditionThemePark I thought the Magnum was a very smoth ride until 2 years ago. I thought it might need new wheels or something. That's why I was shocked when they said it was rough. It was always as smooth as maverick or any other modern coaster.
Cedar Point is my home park, and the legendary profile of the park is not overstated at all. It's a destination for anyone who loves these machines. The size, variety of manufacturing companies present, designs, and historic significance of most of these coasters is akin to going to a living museum. My only complaint is wanting another good wooden coaster, maybe something by the Gravity Group. I would also love to see a Gerstlauer Euro-Fighter coaster built indoors to recreate/re-envision Disaster Transport when it was at its prime. I want to add that the park has more rides in general than any other amusement park, so there are a lot of flat rides and kids rides for people to enjoy. They could probably use a new dark ride, but there is a lot to do, plus the beach is fantastic. It's really one of the best amusement parks in the world.
Definitely “thumbs up” for your wonderful video. There’s so much I want to say... Grew up in Toledo, so my family went every summer. Plenty of glorious memories from those days as a park guest. Just magical times. In college, I interviewed and was hired, so I was able to go behind the scenes and be a part of the “magic”. Worked there 3 summers (the Mill Race/Midway Carousel) then Kiddie Land and then White Water Landing). In those days, being a seasonal park, most of the employees were college students, like me, who were housed in dorms, so there was a lot of youth & energy. I would have to say, those were some of the most memorable, fun days of my life. As an employee, it was normal for us to refer to the park guests as “animals” behind their backs. (“I just caught some animals trying to cut in line, tried to leave to get food and then get back in line.” “The animals are even more aggressive to get into the ride than normal.” “You wont believe the mess the animals left at the french fry stand!!”) One day, while running the merry-go-round in Kiddieland, a man with his 9 year old asked me, “Do you guys still call the park guests ‘animals’?” He said he used to work there years ago, and that was the term they used. I confided to him, “Yup. Still do!” I moved to L.A. after college, but returned to Toledo in 2011 for a visit. Went with the family to Cedar Point, so I revisited places like Kiddieland. I popped my head into the Lost Kids building to ask if they still called park guests”animals”. There was an employee, an older man, not a college student. Thinking management is now trying to hire toward more diversity. I asked my “animals” question to him and...he seemed to have no clue what I was talking about. I guess, somehow, management curbed that bad habit amongst employees!! All in all, I cherish those days. The lights, the sounds, the smells, the camaraderie, the fun. I thank you for this video and the memories...
That's okay, visitors usually call the park employees fucking morons because they can never answer questions and take forever to get people loaded in the rides.
Magnum!! It may not be the "best" coaster in the world, maybe not even in the park, but it will always be my favorite. There is nothing like a night ride on Magnum after a hot summer day. Out there in the dark by yourself, the waterpark below silent and the waves of the lake lapping at the shore, you speed through the elements seemingly faster than ever... just flying over every hill, bang, bang! Magnum.
I hope Cedar Point actually gets to open at some point this year, I love Magnum so much I need to ride it again soon. I'm just glad they extended the 2020 season passes to he valid for the 2021 season.
I loved Magnum not only for the views it provides along the beach, despite its roughness at times, but it started the wars which lead to the Millennium Force, Steel Dragon, Top Thrill, and Kindga Ka. We're to the point where stuff like Fury 325, Intimidator 305, and Orion is sort of normal.
Very good to point out the coaster being fabricated the old school way. I love those vicious triangular bunny hills, they are classic Arrow joltiness in the best way.
My Dad lost his favorite golf hat on The Blue Streak. Pretty sure it was 1977. I think the corkscrew had just opened. My first roller coaster ever was The Wildcat. I remember being so proud of myself. What memories. Thanks Cedar Point!
Honestly, it's kind of amazing how smooth Magnum is when you consider it's been operating for over 30 years... and was made by Arrow.... and made without computers.
@@wickedphant0m Ever ridden a Schwarzkopf? Arrow Suspended Coasters were pretty smooth, so was Viper at Darien Lake, all of them are older than Magnum, yet way smoother, even Gemini right next door is LEAGUES smoother, I can happily marathon Gemini when I can only do Magnum once or twice
I'd like to see Expeditions on Mako, the Big One, Apollo's Chariot, DC Rivals Hypercoaster, Ride of Steel at Darien Lake, Goliath at Six Flags Over Georgia, and Expedition GeForce.
This was great! Magnum XL-200 is still amazing, it's one of my favorite coasters! The airtime is absolutely crazy, especially when the trims aren't on.
Really nice video. Having worked there in 1987, I remember employee bonfires on the beach right under where the Magnum first drop ended up being installed. We never suspected that the first 200 ft tall coaster would end up running right over our heads. Cedar Point is a very special place. Looking forward to the next videos.
An important part of the Cedar Point story is Geauga Lake. A small park about an hour and a half east. This small park at one point had one of the oldest and tallest wooden roller coasters in the world. It was eventually purchased bu Six Flags and became the largest amusement park in the world. The park was later purchased by Cedar Fair. Do a story on Geauga Lake. I used to work there for 7 summers.
I've heard stories that Magnum's trains were heavily modified Mine Train chassis, and hearing about the fact they didn't debut with upstop wheels but rather upstop pads makes me think there's a few grains of truth to these stories.
Magnums trains are identical to Geminis trains the only differences are the fiber glass shell and the fact Magnum has upstop wheels instead of pads (though it used to have pads)
"Even when you see it, you won't believe it". I rode the Magnum on "Media Day", the day before Cedar Point opens for the season, the year it was put in! Nothing was like it! I ride it still, but others in the park are more interesting, now. I am a Michigander who's been going there since 1978 (CorkScrew & Gemini). Good Times. Now my kids love CP, too.
cedar point is absolutely awesome. magnum isnt the smoothest ride on the planet, but it's still a real blast. Millennium force is just insanity. had a blast on steel vengence, and i gave the old woodie blue streak some love. she's 60 years old but still fun in her own way, i did enjoy ridding on it. such a variety of coasters and i for one am glad they have kept blue streak in tip top shape.
love the vids keep up the great work. do one about the history of Carowinds please and the history of theme parks in myrtle beach sc to. there was more down here than just the old hard rock/ freestyle park
This might be my favorite video you've made so far. Very informative & interesting! Landmark hypers (any full circuit coaster with a height or drop 200-299 ft) that I can think of off the top of my head: Magnum, Steel Phantom, Apollo's Chariot & Ride of Steel, Son of Beast, X2, Karnan, Steel Vengeance.
I went to grad school in Cleveland from 1990-92 and rode Magnum in its second season. I was surprised to hear about roughness in the first season because It was crazy smooth when I rode it. I got to ride Mean Streak in its first season. I think my body just stopped hurting a couple years ago. 😀
I really love the first half of this ride, all the way through the turnaround. All the consecutive airtime hills aren't my favorite, and they can be pretty rough at times
Magnum is one of my least favourite coasters of all time and the trims will just make it worse, they need to scrap it or reprofile it with B&M to make it rideable, cause in it's current state, I can't have children anymore thanks to the crappy restriants and seatbelts destroying my testies
This was fascinating! The crazy part is Arrow was basically competing with themselves at this point. They could tell the Cedar Park management " well Busch gardens just bought a really cool interlocking looper...." and then sell them whatever crazy idea the Arrow design team came up with.

IM HOOCKED
Finally made it to Cedar Point back in 2009. WHAT A PARK. Looking forward to a return visit in the future when my kids are a little older.
I remember my first ride on Magnum. A school field trip in 1990. It was legendary.
That's a beautiful look at my home park.
Also, that outro music sounds just like the station music for Millennium Force.
Real That’s because it is the station music for Millennium Force
What a trip down memory lane! Thank you for your work on Cedar Point. I remember when Gemini was the new coaster. The campground was close by and I remember waking up in my Aunt and Uncle's pop-up camper hearing the trains being run for morning tests. Oh the anticipation! Cedar Point is still great, but I do miss the days when there were more trees. Looking forward to seeing what they do with the new boat ride planned for next year's big anniversary... I used to love the old Paddlewheel Excursion.
Gemini is still one of the best rides. Very short lines (due to double tracks), fun ride, getting to slap hands and race the other car.
Magnum was my first coaster last year at 23! I was terrified, but now I'm addicted! This was so fun to watch!
Steel Vengeance and Millennium Force would be neat with the story overviewing the fact that Steel Dragon 2000 was looming
Great job, once again!
Thank you Sean! Guessing you were there opening year 😄
@@ExpeditionThemePark Actually, I didn't go on opening year. I was too afraid to ride any big coasters until my first ride on The Beast in 1990. I took my first ride on Magnum a few weeks later.
Is it just me, or does Magnum's track look different than every other Arrow coaster? Much shorter from the support to the rail
It uses the mine train form factor not the looper form factor which is why it used upstop pads
@@Skippyboy2348 makes sense! I wonder if that means you could put geminis trains on it
@@nothanksguy Magnums trains use the same chassis as Gemini, in fact Magnums trains are almost identical to Geminis train the only differences being the fiber glass shell and having upstop wheels instead of upstop pads

My childhood park! I got to ride Magnum XL 200 on its opening day, and it remains one of my favorite coasters.
Such a good ride!
Going to Cedar Point is a dream of mine. I love roller coasters so going there would make me feel like I've achieved something
I hope you get to go!
Yeah, it's a wonderful place, and I feel totally spoiled that it was my home park
The magnum is one of my favorite rides of all time, this park is such a great park!
One of the best parts of riding a coaster in CP is the view. There you are, cranking up a hill, enjoying Lake Erie, then you drop. Wheeee!
Roller coaster capital of the world, what put Sandusky on the map
exactly Avery!
And thank god it did.. there isn't anything else in Ohio worth mentioning.... 😜
ATLBrysco kings island?
America's Roller Coast
Great seeing footage of the Jumbo Jet, the 1st coaster I rode at CP in 1976. Rode on the Magnum it's inaugural season, and a few times since. My favorite coaster!
Thank God they had Arrow do it and not Togo. Magnum is still in my top 20
Airtime Thrills THANK GOD!
If it were a Togo, it’d be a rare credit(if it would even make it to 2019)
Omg u are my favorite youtuber ever!👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍I subscribed to you
@@HorrorEnthusieat1721 thanks!
when i went to cedar point for the first time earlier this year, Magnum XL 200 was one of my *absolute favorites*
Such a good ride!
@@ExpeditionThemePark No it is not! Good rides don't hurt me in 13 diffrent places!
@@coastaku1954 true I'm never ridding magnum xl200 again after this year unless it gets new trains. Even the so called padding didn't improve the ride.
@@ArrowThrills THANK YOU!!!!!! God those hills hurt
@@ArrowThrills If the bar is the problem here's the trick:
1. Don't staple yourself leave some room between your legs and the bar.
2. After lowering raise your legs by doing a tippy toes motion with your feet. This will prevent the ride op from stapling you
It's amazing it even runs at all
Thank you for making this! Wish I could like this more than once. Would love to see more of Expedition Cedar Point!
I really appreciate the Wicked Twister and Millennium Force station music in the intro and outro.
Worked at Cedar Point for 6 years. Us Thunder Canyon boys had to clean up after Magnum at night since it was before mixed crews. It's amazing what lost articles you find under a coaster. 30 years and the Magnum is still sinking, right?
sinking every single day :D
I watched someone lose their shoe while working at the waterpark on magnum
my friend lost her sunglasses on the first hill of the Blue Streak. she's from Ghana and it was her first and last roller coaster ride ever. it did her in
Lord, it was the meme before there were memes.
@@ExpeditionThemePark I thought the Magnum was a very smoth ride until 2 years ago. I thought it might need new wheels or something. That's why I was shocked when they said it was rough. It was always as smooth as maverick or any other modern coaster.
How amazing is that “Gemini” original television advert? 👌
Maybe the best one yet
Man I LOVED gemini. They got the two cars hyped up and they would race, one would finish first.
Love the Magnum XL-200 section
Better than the Big One?
Expedition Theme Park Easily, everyone knows my favourite coaster is Magnum 😅
True 😄
A video about Desperado would be awesome! That thing was legendary back in the 90s
Maybeeeee 😄
Man , I went there when I was a kid . Awesome place . I remember the skeleton train ride and blue streak coaster .
It may be rough but it was what started it all. Still a very good coaster. Thanks Dick for bringing it to life for us.
One of my favorite coasters at cedar point. Thank you for doing this video
I love Cedar Point. I had no idea about the Magnum being such a big deal. Millennium Force is still my favorite 💗
Honestly, it's kind of amazing how smooth Magnum is when you consider it's been operating for over 30 years... and was made by Arrow.... and made without computers.
Magnum isn't smooth though!!!!
@@coastaku1954 It's not smooth objectively, but it's smoothER than many other coasters of the 80s/90s. As a product of its time, it's impressive.
Ironically, I'm pretty sure that's Paul Frees (Ghost Host) doing the Cedar Point commercial.
I love Cedar Point!! I've been going since the 70s.
I'd like to see Expeditions on Mako, the Big One, Apollo's Chariot, DC Rivals Hypercoaster, Ride of Steel at Darien Lake, Goliath at Six Flags Over Georgia, and Expedition GeForce.
Yeah, I've read that Ron Toomer did bend coat hangers and wires when doing designs.
There's a docu with an interview with him (sorry, the title escapes me) where he literally twists one into an Arrow loop on camera
This was great! Magnum XL-200 is still amazing, it's one of my favorite coasters! The airtime is absolutely crazy, especially when the trims aren't on.
Love this ride!
Really nice video. Having worked there in 1987, I remember employee bonfires on the beach right under where the Magnum first drop ended up being installed. We never suspected that the first 200 ft tall coaster would end up running right over our heads. Cedar Point is a very special place. Looking forward to the next videos.
Thank you
An important part of the Cedar Point story is Geauga Lake.
Cedar point s history inspires me it's a amusement park testimony if you wait you will be blessed just look at it today it's a coaster heaven
Great video! Imagine how smooth this beast was when it opened.
My first coaster as of yesterday! 💕
cedar point is absolutely awesome. magnum isnt the smoothest ride on the planet, but it's still a real blast. Millennium force is just insanity. had a blast on steel vengence, and i gave the old woodie blue streak some love. she's 60 years old but still fun in her own way, i did enjoy ridding on it. such a variety of coasters and i for one am glad they have kept blue streak in tip top shape.
The freakin airtime hills on this thing are still unmatched. It’s incredible to me that it was entirely hand- and eyeball-crafted.
love the vids keep up the great work. do one about the history of Carowinds please and the history of theme parks in myrtle beach sc to. there was more down here than just the old hard rock/ freestyle park
I have been going to CP my whole life and yet I just realized how much I don't know about it. More please!
Always soo great to see my home park being talked about!
awesome video as well.
I went to grad school in Cleveland from 1990-92 and rode Magnum in its second season. I was surprised to hear about roughness in the first season because It was crazy smooth when I rode it. I got to ride Mean Streak in its first season. I think my body just stopped hurting a couple years ago. 😀
Always great to see new content from you.
Thank you
this was one of my favorites at the park.
Holy cow, over 200 feet, 72 mph and 5,106ft in 1989.... good god that must have been some opening day, the hype was real.
Great vid! It really shows how historic this park is
I really love the first half of this ride, all the way through the turnaround. All the consecutive airtime hills aren't my favorite, and they can be pretty rough at times
Sometimes the trims still don’t kick in and apparently it makes it one of the best rides in the world
Gotta hate trims!
Formula 1st No trims make for a great ride
Magnum is one of my least favourite coasters of all time and the trims will just make it worse, they need to scrap it or reprofile it with B&M to make it rideable, cause in it's current state, I can't have children anymore thanks to the crappy restriants and seatbelts destroying my testies
They usually turn them off at night ;)
Coastaku Nonsense
One of my all time favorite rides
So good!
Expedition Theme Park thank you for your amazing research, this is my fav of your videos so far!
Man, I remember being so excited the summer I was finally tall enough for the Magnum
