  • Join us on our second episode looking at Hyper-coasters with The Rough History of Desperado. Located in Primm, Nevada at the Buffalo Bill's Resort and Casino this unique roller-coaster does not sit in a theme park but at a Casino. Billed as pretty rough it was once the tallest roller-coaster in the world... kinda.

Interestingly, this was represented in “Fallout: New Vegas” as a wooden coaster, attached to the “Bison Steve” hotel. And it somehow was mostly still standing 2 centuries after the Great War of 2077.

I was basically forced to stay at this hotel earlier this year and honestly it was one of the most surreal experiences I’ve had in my life. A massive, vacant casino with weird theming, cordoned-off kids rides and games, and a definitely cursed McDonald’s. Denny’s was nice though.

The issue with attractions like this is the operators think they can build a ride and it'll stay relevant forever. Which we all know isn't the case. What they built in the 90's was pretty cool, the Log Flume is actually pretty good and Desperado is a solid ride. But they didn't keep the momentum going. So over time the train closed, the drop tower closed, they failed to properly maintain the rides and they never added anything compelling so it all got really stale. When the Sahara closed I thought Speed the ride would be a great fit but they haven't invested in the attractions in decades. It's really too bad because it could have become a pretty cool small amusement park and certainly got off to a pretty good start.

    • @MM-yb2fy

I remember staying with the family at the Buffalo Bills a lot during the 1995 to 2005. I easily earned enough points so my kids were given a all day pass to ride Desperado, the log ride, and motion ride as much as they wanted. And it cost a dollar to see a first run movie. The casino and arcade were packed. Stateline started to fall off in early 3000 and really fell off cliff when Herbst took over, they didn't tale care of the hotels and started to relly jack up the priced which drove the families away. I think the last time I stayed there was Christmas 2017, what a mess. I will never stay there again.

Fuck I miss 90s Vegas.... That is my favorite time, when the old was being replaced by the new, and Vegas wasn't really sure where it was headed. It tried to do that family fun atmosphere thing and kind of failed. But at that time it literally had everything. It still had the old time casinos with coins, it had the new mega resorts like the MGM and Mirage, it had rides and grand arcades at nearly every casino... it had super cheap buffets.... I first rode Desperado in August of 1995. I loved it so much that I decided to pass on going to Vegas with friends so I could ride it all evening. Back when I used to rate coasters, I had the coaster above Magnum. The ride didn't age well at all and I doubt I would ever stop by to ride it again as my last ride on it a decade ago was enough to make me lose interest in it. Also, Whiskey Pete's was supposed to get a very large CCI coaster at one point. A racing one if I remember correctly. Sounds like it would have been incredible.

I rode Desperado once in the mid 90's, it was within a few years of when it opened. A car in our train suffered a wheel failure during the ride, I think it might have been the one I was in, the whole train felt it as I recall. One of the broken pieces that flew off hit a girl at the rear in the face or eye. I don't know how bad the injury was, but I remember EMTs getting to her before we even off loaded. I can't find any reports about it, its likely both parties came to a settlement and that the injury wasn't that bad.

Growing up in California we would always stop at State Line (We never called it Primm, and still call it State Line) on the way to Vegas, and would stop to ride the Desperado at Buffalo Bills. I honestly had so many great memories there, and this was also the time when Las Vegas was trying to be more "Family Friendly" with the MGM Grand Adventures. I absolutely love Primm Nevada, honestly it's a must stop place. It's so sad to see the decline of this amazing place, but I'll always love it. I'd love to see the log flume back in action again and I'd love to ride it. Hopefully things will get back to normal soon.

I just passed by after leaving Vegas for few months to do business in California, it was sad to see Buffalo Bills all dark, I rode that roller coaster and log ride many times, as to how to keep this place open and getting people to the location is an easy one, I know I could get people to come no matter if California is coming here or not, it very simple really..

This was my first 200ft+ coaster when I was a kid, I thought I was going to have a heart attack on the way to the top but after the first drop I was in love.
After I got off I got right back on it, and was the most painful ride of my life I thought it was going to kill me. Never rode it again.

That place was a lot of fun @ 1x.
It was packed when it opened in 94 and it stayed packed for almost 2years but it started dying off pretty rapidly, a few years ago there was no one out there when I stopped, I stopped just to see and it the resort itself needs new carpet but idk if they’ve done anything since, it was starting to look old a few years ago but I’d bet they’ve updated the easiest things like carpet and even some machines to keep it from looking old, some of the exterior needed New coat of paint as well.
It did have long climb that purposely climbed very slow and then a steep drop that continued flying around the rest of the ride.

As a life-long Las Vegas native, thank you for this video! I ride Desperado whenever I see concerts at the Star Of The Desert Arena in Buffalo Bill's. I've also ridden the Manhattan Express (NYNY Roller Coaster) many times. Desperado is sort of rough, the Manhattan Express feels like you're getting punched in the neck over and over, thanks to the odd shoulder restraints they have on it. If they switched to just lap bars, it'd be a much more enjoyable experience. The Manhattan Express also has a nice view of T-Mobile Arena (home of the Vegas Golden Knights) during the chain lift hill. The Adventuredome Indoor Amusement Park in Las Vegas has 2 very nice roller coasters. SPEED was an awesome launched shuttle looping roller coaster at the Sahara/NASCAR Cafe, but was removed when Sahara was purchased and became the SLS. It's now called The Sahara again, but the roller coaster remains in storage near the Luxor and airport. Hopefully they put that back in its original place. I look forward to your upcoming Las Vegas video(s)! I'll be heading to Six Flags Magic Mountain from Vegas on the 28th (leaving the 27th), so I'll definitely go ride Desperado.

Oh, hey, my family goes through Primm every time we drive to and from Vegas. I never wondered about it nearly as much as the abandoned Lake Dolores/Rock a Hoola waterpark we also pass by each time, but I'd be lying if I said I'd never thought about it from time to time. Nicely done, as usual, and really looking forward to the next one.

I’ve gone here the last few years for the Mint 400. The place is in rough shape but I was lucky enough to actually catch a ride on the log ride one year. It seemed like you used to be able to shoot targets during the ride as there are some targets around like a shooting gallery game but we weren’t able to do that when it was running. After that I never saw it run again. That was probably 2018 or 2019.

I got to ride Desperado for the first time in September. I was expecting a vicious and brutal ride based on the reviews I read, but I didn't think my ride was half-bad. It was janky and awkward, but at no point was it painful and I thought it was pretty fun. I would have gone for a second go if it wasn't so expensive.

My three brothers and I would go there at least twice a month and ride the coaster and log ride inside for free then hit the arcade for a couple hours after the rides.
