With good reason. From AJFA, a prog, dark masterpiece to radio-friendly anthems in one album... don't get me wrong, it was more accessible, and I was among those who loved it at first, in part because metal was now mainstream, which meant more choice for metalheads and more exposure for otherwise lesser-known bands. But as I grew older, I realized that this is when they started selling out.

We all know that's simply not true, even Mustaine knows it. Some of us liked both types of Metal, in fact most Metalheads especially back in the day felt that way. Its all Rock & Roll no matter how you wanna slice it. However, you had these Neanderthals who claimed they only liked thrash. I'm pretty certain that constant back and forth bickering drew a line in the sand and tore the Metal community apart. As a result of that came the most boring 10 years better known as the grunge era.

Winger. To me it was an amazing band , for a musical perspective , rod on drums(I studied fanatically the Hal Leonard Drum tab book. Even Corrected Small mistakes on Rainbow in the Rose.. ) reb on guitar. Kip on bass ,,,World class. I just think they were the product of their generation. And what sold at the time, And could’ve made a different genre of music if you were 10 years younger or older . There’s always been band feuds. . But in the 80s it was very extreme.. i saw metallic at once. It was 1986 at the Nassau Coliseum. With Ozzy Osbourne. Great show.

Interesting question: was there pressure from management to change your image? No, there wasn't. Metallica did that themselves. Do these guys forget they were wearing eyeliner and shit in the Load era? Metallica haven't really carried the flag of thrash since AJFA. Their first 4 albums were awesome, and the black album had some good tunes. But theyve spent more of their career trying to incorporate trends than they have defying them at this point. Good guys, and I'm a fan, but let's be real.

From the Playboy interview around the time Jason Left the band.
Hetfield: We had our battles with spandex, that’s for sure. You could show off your package. “Wear spandex, dude. It gets you chicks!” On the first tour through America, my spandex-- I fucking hate saying, “my spandex.” It’s a pretty evil phrase. They were wet from the night before, and I was drying them by the heater. A big hole melted right in the crotch. It was like, “They’re not real pants, are they? They’re like pantyhose.” I just opted to keep my jeans on, and that was the best thing that ever happened. Lars wore spandex up through the Black Album tour, though he might tell you different.
