    Local family owned markets are wonderful. I am originally from South Florida and in Homestead we had “Robert is here“ which is a local produce market. It is family owned and oh so absolutely wonderful with the best milkshakes in the universe! The owner is such a wonderful man. He would teach people how to grow their own produce and he would take in and rehab roaming animals such as a giant turtle we once found. You have inspired me to find a local market where we now live.

    My local farmer's market opened last weekend. The carrots were so beautiful and not as large as the ones you got. I brought them home, scrubbed them and then sliced them in half. Then I tossed them in a little olive oil and sprinkled some rosemary and thyme along with some Redmond salt. Roasted them in the oven at 400F for 20 minutes and they were perfect and carmelized, good hot or cold. So nice to get local produce fresh from the ground.

    I've been preaching to my extended family for the past 2+ years to get to know our local farmers. Map out where the fresh farmer's markets are and local meat processors. Some things may be cheaper, some things may be a little more expensive, but it all works out to better nutrition all the way around. It pays to shop locally in so many ways. In today's society of instant gratification we've lost many benefits of "a little elbow grease" on our part. Happy food hunting!

    I would rather buy locally from my locally owned businesses any day! We buy a lot of our produce at our local farmers market. Ours is unique, they buy the overage from the LA produce market that would normally go to the top end restaurants. They sell the produce at a severely reduced price and the produce is at peek of freshness or used by fort five days at the most. Deeply discounted and also good. You can save a ton of money on your food budget if you plan around the specials. Jim I shop like you do!

    • @RoseRedHomestead
      @RoseRedHomestead  Месяц назад +2

      I just read that it does, but it is much slower. One of the reasons is that it has 30% less glucose. Sourwood honey comes from trees. There are a few types of honey that never crystalize. I did a Google search: Does sourwood honey crystalize? There are numerous sites that discuss honey crystallization. Jim

  • @memelissa2
    @memelissa2 Месяц назад

    Warning: A lot of people make the mistake of thinking everything sold by a place like that is "locally grown". It's not. At the Farmers Market I sell at, we are required to have signage stating which items are local and which are not. Because we are so used to getting any kind of produce all year round, we forget there are seasons for certain fruits and veggies. People need to relearn those important facts.
    For instance, if it's May, those apples weren't grown in Utah. They could have been harvested in the fall and over-wintered, but they looked pretty fresh. The grapes, same thing.
    It's fine to sell things that you didn't grow, especially if you can match or beat the grocery store prices and be honest about it. Maybe you could do a video educating people on what to watch out for when shopping at local farm markets.

    • @RoseRedHomestead
      @RoseRedHomestead  Месяц назад

      I think most people are aware of growing seasons. Obviously everything at Frei's was not home grown this time of year, but as Mikela explained, their home grown produce will be forthcoming. What I watch out for and avoid at farmer's markets is cinnamon rolls, home canned items, homemade jewelry, etc. There are all kinds of farmers markets and not everyone insists on everything being home grown. To each his own. Thanks.

    • @memelissa2
      @memelissa2 Месяц назад +1

      @@RoseRedHomestead I absolutely agree. And yes, she did a great job of pointing it out. Actually, you'd be amazed how many people have no idea when harvests come in or where it can be grown. I've been selling at our Farmers Market for 12 years and I see it all the time, especially with younger people who grew up not needing to know. To me, it's very sad.
      And yes, to each his own. What I hate is seeing a person who thinks they're buying something grown locally and the seller is misleading or out and out lying to them. Again, I am NOT talking about Mikela or her business. I'm warning others that not all sellers are honest and a little education can help. Ignorance may be bliss, but I work hard to educate my customers so they know exactly what they're buying. Even on the items that I didn't produce myself.
