  • This recipe comes from the Ball Blue Book and is a wonderful addition to our food storage. It can be thickened after opening and has a variety of ways to prepare it, one of which we demonstrate at the end of the video.

    My husband always opens jars with the edge of the ring. Hold the jar with your hands, the ring with your thumbs and use the edge of the bottom of the ring to pry the lid. He’s a pro.

    I have used a little vinegar in the processing water to prevent a cloudy residue on the outside of my jars. Thanks for all you do and teach :) +JMJ+

      Using vinegar can make the jar rings rust a lot faster.

      ​@cynthiafisher9907 PLUS it can pit your aluminum canner. I figure I can always wash my jars, but now both of my canners are pitted.

    My local store has chicken breasts on sale for $1.99/lb. Headed out to get some chicken for canning this stew! Thanks, Pam. May God richly bless you and Jim for all you do for our community. I am thinking processing time is 75 minutes based on other tested recipes I have researched.

    For a variation on the chicken pot pie you could top it with mashed potatoes to create a shepherds pie.

      I do all the time because I think it's also healthier. Do these the same as I would Cottage or Shepards pies.

    Oh you make it look so smooth and easy to do. I’m sure it is but when I can its like a train wreak when it comes to the filling of jars. I love your prep. I’m still a progress at work. Lol. Your awesome!

    I love meals in jar. I will be making that recipe I also love canned meat I didn’t freeze anything this last summer canned everything I have canned for years ready all my life my mom canned so canning and gardening is in my DNA.

    Great recipe, I’ll be making this. I bought a jar opener so I could preserve my canning lids for vacuum sealing. It’s cute, but cost me $25; would never have purchased it if I’d known your “dime trick.” Learning is so much FUN. ❣️

      Thanks for the comments. We have done a number of garden videos and plan to do some this spring/summer. We have not really talked about pests, except squashing tomato works, squash bugs, and spraying our apple trees. We do not have any tomatoes, squash, or apples this year.     Pam, you look so bright and cheery in that color shirt and lipstick. I love, love the recipe. We can't have enough chicken or chicken meals on the shelf. I'm hearing that the price of chicken is about to go through the roof AGAIN. So... can can can that chicken. I was also very glad to hear you are going to increase showing us ways to use all the ingredients we have been putting up and even turning some into complete jarred meals. Can't wait.       More than likely. There was a big disease breakout on chickens here in Iowa. They had to cull the flocks. They thought they had it eradicated but I just saw on last weeks news that it’s broken out again. Chicken and eggs will skyrocket due to this. 🤦‍♀️😢

    Chicken stew was my first canning project. Waited a few weeks and opened a jar today, it was delicious! Will be making more meals in a jar, so convenient since it’s just me now. Will be making it in a pie next time. This time I made it over noodles. Thanks Pam and Jim.

    I made 1 large pot pie with this and froze the remainder instead of canning it this time. I will try canning a batch as well. It is going to be a favorite around here, along with my veg/meatball soup which I remember my mother serving every winter. Love, love, love both dishes.
