Man as someone that rents cars often I saw this becoming a problem pretty quickly. It was scary seeing so many other people's information. I went ahead and deleted all as much as I could including my own when I was done using it, but it was really time consuming hassle. I told Enterprise they should delete all the data on the cars they rent out as soon as they get them back because this can quickly become a big problem for them in the future, but who knows if they listened.
I'm REALLY happy someone finally made a video addressing it and validating what I figured as well.

Sometimes those infotainment systems have a factory reset option that is supposed to clear out the old data. It likely even unpairs any devices that were paired also. I don't know where you would find it but I found it on my vehicle while poking around in the settings for anything I might decide to adjust. They are all going to be a little bit different so a search for infotainment system factory reset on any specific vehicle may help. It may even be different on the same model vehicle in different model years if there was a major revision or just a change to someone else's software instead.

That's why it's up to you (and me) to be vigilant with personal data. I don't often rent a car, but I'll be on the lookout from now on and make sure to delete my info from the infotainment system. @@LironSegev This is why rental cars are so stressful for me. I had a dispute with a rental company over a small scratch. They are supposed to record such things before renting out the vehicle, but some don't. They ARE more likely to look carefully at the vehicle when it is returned. Luckily I had taken photos with my phone before driving away, and so they had to accept that the scratch was already there when I rented it, because of the time stamp.

Great video Liron!! I've been doing this for years. When I get a rental, first thing I do is delete ALL phones from the Infotainment system. Then I'll allow mine to connect, but of course at the end of the rental, I'll make sure to delete my info as well, AND remove the car from my phone as a device. Another thing I do is take a bunch of photos from all around the car when I pick it up, as well as drop it off. Yes, I get the mileage and gas gauge too. Hertz for me has been known to ignore the gas level and just charge for a full tank regardless. They always do it after the fact, so I've got the initial receipt as well as the gas level pic. I'm always nice when I ask them to remove it....and they are nice to do just that. Course I try not to rent from Hertz anymore. Pains me because I had many years of great service from them in the 80's/90's/2000's. Thanks!
Funny story on "connecting to the wrong car". I had flown out for work from San Francisco, but due to an emergency, I came back home via Sacramento. My sister and I hopped in my 2nd car to go pick up my daily driver at SFO. Once we got in the car, my phone kept connecting to the daily driver behind me. My 2nd car didn't have bluetooth. Then I got a call from work, which my sister answered in my car behind me. Pretty funny but exactly to your point of connecting to the wrong car.

Also a lot of people don’t know. In the days of toll by mail and various traffic camera devices. When you incur a fee like that the rental company will send you an email ( usually months after the rental ). That they are going to charge the card you used to rent the vehicle unless you call customer service and arrange other payment. So be extra careful when renting

I don't even connect to a car via Bluetooth anymore. I connected to my mom's car(a pre-Infotainment car, no touch screen, etc) via Bluetooth to play music a few times. A few months later, her exact vehicle(make, model, year, even color) showed up on Experian, asking if it was my car.

Over the top presentation this time. The down side is scammers will be checking rental cars for easy access information if they had not known about this. I'm pretty sure that rental agencies are supposed to remove this personal data but we all know how they cut corners when it comes to rental prep.

they are doing this now. They are also breaking into cars parked at airports and seeing the home addresses on the insurance papers in the glove box. They know the owner is away since they just got on a flight and usually they have the garage remove as that is left in the car! Thats why I always Uber to the airport

I have connected by BT to a rental car and deleted my phone info as well as the phone info from anyone else that was stored in the infotainment system when I returned it.. One thing I did notice is that the level of detail available for the previous renters was nowhere near what you were able to access, but this was in Australia and perhaps we have a different level of connection here.

I do this every rental and I have seen exactly what you discussed. I have never allowed any of my data in a rental to stay but many many people do indeed just trust that the return process removes such data which is a total error on thier part. As you say be aware and selective of what you connect to. I use the tools available but always remove my tracks as best I can.
