2024 Volkswagen ID 5 GTX review: Buy this electric SUV or a Tesla Model Y?

- The Volkswagen ID 5 is coming to Australia, and we'll be getting the GTX sporty model, too.
But the version I just drove in Europe is probably not all that indicative of what we will see in Australia in late 2024, because updates are expected for this electric SUV.
So, will it really be good enough to match up against the Tesla Model Y? Time will tell, because we won't know the pricing, specs and other crucial details until next year. But until there, here's a brief review of the ID.5 GTX to whet the appetite.
Let me know what you think about it in the comments section!

Absolutely breathtaking backdrop mate! Haven't been to Austria, but I think it needs to be on my list ..... Drove around Croatia for 2 weeks in May this year (in an Opel Corsa F) and loved it. Not so much the car, but Croatia was amazing! Haha!
I'm liking these EV segments you're doing, but I'm probably about 5-6 years away from buying an EV myself. I'm not sure if these EV's from Volkswagen are going to be enough for them here? And at those prices? I know it's aiming for the Tesla Model Y, but I'm just wondering when are EV prices going to come down to more normal levels? I know there are more 'affordable' EV's coming onto the market, but even at those 'affordable' prices, they're still out of reach for a large portion of the market.
Thank you - found this spot on our way through and loved it. Austria is very underrated. It’s one of the great European countries!
Yeah it’s a while before EVs of this size get to a more realistic price point for our market. Maybe by the time you’re ready to buy they will $50k for 500km of range in a RAV4 size EV. MAYBE!
If it have a 7 seater option with model y pricing. I will consider it.
It won't have a seven-seater version.
@@therightcar thanks for that. Cross off the list.
Gotta appreciate the BMW iX3's Halo Energy Sword tail lights.
good gawd, that backdrop
It's not bad, but doesn't really have a great deal of appeal to me. I think the MY is better looking, more powerful and has better tech.
Lovely setting for your review. I’ve owned previous VW’s, ICE vehicles, and not had the best experiences with service. I’ve come to like the clean appearance inside Tesla cars and the dysfunctional warning sounds plagued me in past VW’s. I’m a little uncertain about VW’s commitment to European made EV’s. Thanks for the review, interesting to see what comes to Australia. I’ll stick with Tesla.
I never take much notice of these overseas first drives, especially European cars always seem to fair worse once they get to Aus. But I have to say, this car is totally NOT compelling to me. Why the hell does what is supposed to be a family car need so much power? I would rather have them focus on efficiency. I think the Tesla Model Y is ugly in the extreme, but would still buy it (base form with LFP battery) over this because it will be far better value, have better electric tech and frankly, being built in China, probably better reliability. Both manufacturers though score very low on customer service from what I have read (and experienced in the case of Volkswagen). It's a no from me.
Thanks for your comment mate. I can see your argument! But hey, there are buyers to be had.
There is any better car than Tesla model Y
Instantly lost interest no spare wheel, totally impractical in Australia.
Almost every EV has no spare.
You gotta joking!!! Vw over Tesla.............. Shit never.
Wow!
