My department switched from 40cal to 9mm a few years ago. It’s definitely easier on the guns: less part failures especially with midsize polymer frame guns (we were using Glock 23’s). Beyond that, the 9mm is much easier to shoot, faster / more accurate follow up shot and less sensitive to poor grip/stance. It was always clear to me that’s where the benefit ended though. The idea that round for round, a 9mm was as effective as a 40 under the same exact circumstances was always silly to me. But ask yourself this. Under high duress, hands shaking, sweaty palms, drawing and shooting as fast as possible, would you rather hit 40cal shots to the outer edges of someone’s body or 9mm shots right down the center? I was a fairly good shooter with the 40, but one thing I noticed was my first shot right out of the holster on a quick draw on any shooting day with the 40 was always further from dead center mass than with the 9mm. Still effective, but the 9mm was just that much easier to control. In controlled shooting at static targets when I can stand there and focus on my fundamentals , the 40 groupings were the same, but doing dynamic drills or anytime I’m shooting under less than ideal circumstances I have better groupings with the 9mm. I really think the answer as to which is “better” in self defense comes down to how good you are with your firearm. If you shoot every day, you could drop a dead center mass shot from 15 yards from a random buzzer quick draw first round of fire you take on any range day, if your grip fundamentals are good enough that you can easily manage recoil for quick follow up shots and believe you can maintain this under duress, the 40 is going to be more effective. Reason why it was probably beneficial for most LE agencies to go 9mm is because most LEO’s are average or slightly above average shooters. Better than people without any formal training who never learned fundamentals correctly but far from serious shooting enthusiasts. In the hands of someone average, I would think the 9mm has much better chance of saving their life.people need to be honest with themselves. How often do you shoot? How well do you train? Hell, even your fitness comes into play since duress could wreak havoc on your breathing and motor skills especially if you’re out of shape. All this considered, do you want the gun slightly harder to shoot or the gun with slightly less ‘stopping power’.

Objective evidence of overpenetration into a human target by both 9mm and .40S&W, unless you're having to shot through a car door or light barrier of some sort. Nice experiment.
You know which caliber is the best? Whichever one works best with you the individual holding the firearm. Personally I don't care for the 40. It is a rather high pressure ammo that beats the absolute shit out of whatever firearm it's going through. And truth be told if somebody's wearing body armor it's not going to matter if it's a 9 mm or a 40 or a 45. It's not going to go through. Now obviously there are certain types of ammo that you can get in all of those calibers that will penetrate... But shot for shot on average what matters is what your best with. My EDC is either my full size 92FS Beretta 9 mm or one of the several 1911 45 ACPs that I have. And I'm very very thankful that as a civilian I've never had to draw on anybody. And I can speak highly of the 9 mm because during three of my six deployments I had an M9 on my person. And that 9 mm saved my ass quite a few times.
O teste deveria ser feito, com o mesmo tipo de munição. Os disparos com a 9mm foram feitos com munição expansiva e, o disparos com a .40 foram feitos com munição sólida. É óbvio que a munição sólida perfura mais do que a expansiva.
Let me ask stupid question…is this a measure of 9mm vs 40 caliber or 115 grain versus 155 grain? Seems logical that the significantly higher grain would have higher penetration rate.
@@jackking2588 its 9mm vs 40s&w and it isn't logical that a higher grain would have better penetration, I have tried other brands (Winchester, Armscor, S&B, etc,) and the 9mm 115gr fmj has the same result or penetrates more. Thanks for watching!
40 also has the advantage of the practice rounds feeling the same as the carry rounds. If you train with practice 9 rounds you better also practice with your hot loaded 9 carry rounds too.
The 9mm doesn't come close to the .40. In Brazil the police swapped the .38 SPL for the .40 and didn't even go past the 9mm Parabellum and this pistol is much more lethal than those two calibers. It has more stopping power, more inertia in the projectiles, more penetration, makes bigger holes in targets and neutralizes a target much more easily. The 9mm has been transformed into a civilian caliber and has long since ceased to be satisfactory for war troops.
How much penetration do you need to be lethal. The 9mm is not as powerful than the 40SW but is good enough, specially with those that are recoil sensitive. That to see raw power from a 40SW try a 155gr load from either RP or Federal going at 1250 to 1300 FPS, it will go thru another barrier at between 512 to 550 foot pounds. The 9mm would seem weak at 380 Ft pounds but that is good enough to stop someone at up to 25 yards while the 40WS will do the job at 50 yards. It is all about training and what most comfortable with.
I have handguns in three calibers: 380 for deep concealment, 9mm for concealment, and 40 for general purpose. The 9mm is an adequate caliber, but the 40 is the better of the two.
But you have to realize that 9mm are fmj and the .40 are frangible, it's a total different bullet type. You should make the test with both fmj or both frangible
Vorrei capire? Allora il cal. 40 sw, è stato più penetrante del 9mm, in questo caso? Lo Consigliate c difesa personale? Vorrei prendere una Glock 22 in cal. 40sw, in 5^ generazione FS.

And that 9 mm saved my ass quite a few times.
why hayull yeaa.. one of the best ones Ive seen on this classic comparison
Cool video, but what was the point? Do people actually debate if the .40 is stronger than the 9mm?
@@aricohen616 is an entertainment video only, thanks!👍
O teste deveria ser feito, com o mesmo tipo de munição. Os disparos com a 9mm foram feitos com munição expansiva e, o disparos com a .40 foram feitos com munição sólida. É óbvio que a munição sólida perfura mais do que a expansiva.
Another great test but, I thought that 9 mm would be winner! 😮
H&K .40 Pistol from "Rainbow Six" computer game from 98 year😊👏👍

Let me ask stupid question…is this a measure of 9mm vs 40 caliber or 115 grain versus 155 grain? Seems logical that the significantly higher grain would have higher penetration rate.
@@jackking2588 its 9mm vs 40s&w and it isn't logical that a higher grain would have better penetration, I have tried other brands (Winchester, Armscor, S&B, etc,) and the 9mm 115gr fmj has the same result or penetrates more. Thanks for watching!
Compare same bullet weight !! As close as you can for correct test!!!
It is just a manipulation of bullet's weight! Just try the best combination of charge and bullet weight for each caliber depending on your goal!
Great video thank you !
I wonder what the 45 would have done
9mm Luger can be fired by the Uzi right.. ?
Have you ever tried the Uzi on single-shot at beyond 100m ?
Beautiful tree. Are you in Mexico or Colombia or... where? :)
40 also has the advantage of the practice rounds feeling the same as the carry rounds. If you train with practice 9 rounds you better also practice with your hot loaded 9 carry rounds too.
Underrated truth. Unless you’re quoting me.
Great Video. Thank you
The 9mm doesn't come close to the .40.
Great test
So now we know both will shoot right through a person and into whatever is behind them but will thay stop a wild boar or a bear
You compared 115gn vs 165gn I think that is not correct
How much penetration do you need to be lethal. The 9mm is not as powerful than the 40SW but is good enough, specially with those that are recoil sensitive. That to see raw power from a 40SW try a 155gr load from either RP or Federal going at 1250 to 1300 FPS, it will go thru another barrier at between 512 to 550 foot pounds. The 9mm would seem weak at 380 Ft pounds but that is good enough to stop someone at up to 25 yards while the 40WS will do the job at 50 yards. It is all about training and what most comfortable with.
@@alfonsorodriguez6437 take it easy brother, these tests are for fun nothing nothing serious, 9mm is my every day carry! Take care!
I have handguns in three calibers: 380 for deep concealment, 9mm for concealment, and 40 for general purpose. The 9mm is an adequate caliber, but the 40 is the better of the two.
Wound cavity and penetration. Your talking about flesh Vs steel plates.
You can get a hydro shock on 9mm ND ITS EASIER TO HANDLE THAN THE RECOIL OF THE 40 sw
Great video!
Somewhere, there's a missing air duct (: . I would have thought the 9mm would have beat the 40.
Isn't that more like sheet metal than "steel plate"
But you have to realize that 9mm are fmj and the .40 are frangible, it's a total different bullet type. You should make the test with both fmj or both frangible
Dam. What did those earmuffs do to you😂
A quarenta é uma pancada mesmo!
Can you make a 10mm vs 40s&w video?🎉
What thickness of this metal plates?1mm?
👊Excelente💯👌💯💪
The sign on my door says firearms are required, minimum of45 cal. Rentals are available at the door.
Muito bom👏👏👏👍👉🇺🇸
Achei pesos diferentes de projéteis para comparações.(I thought the projectils where in diferent weigths)
9mm more capacity, less recoil, less impact in equipament, better control n perfuration
Simple test 👌
Vorrei capire? Allora il cal. 40 sw, è stato più penetrante del 9mm, in questo caso? Lo Consigliate c difesa personale? Vorrei prendere una Glock 22 in cal. 40sw, in 5^ generazione FS.
Ricorda che tutti i calibri sono efficaci, (la chiave: "shot placement"), personalmente posso usare migliore la 9mm
You used a very light bullet for the 9mm compared to the 40 S&W. It was not an honest test.
Nice idea. Well done.
Acho que o peso de projétil foi incompatível. 115 x 165 de ponta, claramente o .40 ia obter mais penetração...
Wait so 40 penetrated deeper than a 9mm? 😱 that’s not what the “experts” seem to think.
@@889976889 this tests are for entertainment they have nothing scientific, thanks for watching!
I was being sarcastic, can’t deny science which shows 9mm isn’t better than 40.
Talked to my gun store guy today. He claims .40 S&W ammo will become scarce once the Ukraine war is settled, especially since they are the current major buyer of .40 S&W ammo. Glock and SIG no longer make pistols in that caliber, so now it's time to stock up on .40 S&W ammo if one owns a .40 cal handgun???
According to the internet, both Glock and Sig still make .40mm.
@Gough-jf9zf So far, I've had no problems finding it either. But apparently, once the Ukraine War ends, rumors are it may become scarce. I guess we'll find out one day.
@@tunnelcat I read further since posting and some sources _are_ saying Sig have/will cease production. Some are calling it a marketing exercise to jack up prices. We live in cynical times.
@Gough-jf9zf Time to stock up then.
As we saw during Covid 40 ammo isn’t going anywhere
barrel lengths should be the same.
No suprise, 40sw wins. 🏆
Teste justo seria munição 9mm /124 grains x 40 /165 grains!
So in other words both might kill ya ? Got it thanks !!
What gauge was the metal plate
