When my department switched to .40 (180gr), from 9mm (148gr), we had way better results from the .40. We switched back to 9mm, the bean counters like paying for the cheaper 9mm ammo.

How much penetration do you need to be lethal. The 9mm is not as powerful than the 40SW but is good enough, specially with those that are recoil sensitive. That to see raw power from a 40SW try a 155gr load from either RP or Federal going at 1250 to 1300 FPS, it will go thru another barrier at between 512 to 550 foot pounds. The 9mm would seem weak at 380 Ft pounds but that is good enough to stop someone at up to 25 yards while the 40WS will do the job at 50 yards. It is all about training and what most comfortable with.

at 147 the sheet metal was already crooked and therefore the penetration was different than with perpendicular sheet metal.

.40 definitely better 180 grn or 165 grn.

I always felt that penetration tests were fairly pointless. People are not using FMJs for defense. Shooting plinking rounds is not a great measure of effectiveness of a caliber.

As someone who has been shot with a 357 Will tell you those things are no joke I'm currently a spinal cord patient After being shot in my C5 C6

FBI (in the 1990's) already tested both of these. They used the more traditional and practical 124 grain 9mm, since 115 is not standard military, but just a budget or commercial weight. Once you move up to the 124, the 9mm passes through all plates.

The 40 Smith & Wesson won over the 9mm but not by much I'm actually pretty impressed with the performance of the 9mm. The 40 is great but the 10 mm is King and that's why I only use 10 mm and 9mm
