  • Tradition and culture play a vital role across different societies, with distinct gender roles assigned to men and women. For a long time, men were primarily expected to provide and lead the family, while the women acted as the caretakers of the children and house chores.
Our resident Sexpert, KAZ, shares her thoughts on our Street Debate on gender equality in Liberia, where young Liberians spoke on gender roles and traditions in the country.

But if you’re following “tradition” - why does the woman have to work?

Women worked in many traditional African societies. They contributed to farm work, selling of produce and were famous traders in their own rights. This gave and continues to give many African women freedom to decide their futures.

REASONS I FIND IT HARD TO REASON MYSELF TO EVEN MARRY.
WE ARE BOTH WORKING WHY DO I HAVE TO DO ALL THESE EXTRA WORK, BEAR IN MIND UNAPPRECIATED ALSO.
I BETTER BE SINGLE STRESS-FREE AND HAPPY.

If you man is the main bread winner and his work is primarily paying all if not most of the bills, then his work efforts mean you and the children benefit - lets not forget male providers work very hard and often extending hours to provide for the entire family... (I'm speaking on behalf of provider males, not broke as dudes whom need or expect you (women) to pay some of their bills also. - it a tough world, so credit to those who know how to succeed and flourish.

Why would you be doing extra work? If you are unappreciated anywhere, you shouldn't stay. So make sure you both add in the extra work and appreciate each other!

This video presents a valuable perspective, but it's important to remember that career paths and priorities differ greatly among women. While some women thrive in high-pressure corporate environments, others find deep fulfillment in nurturing their families at home. Both choices deserve recognition and support.
Just like women, men's career paths are diverse. Society often celebrates success in corporate jobs, neglecting the equally valuable contributions of those in blue-collar fields or running their own businesses.
Let's move beyond one-sided narratives and celebrate the many ways people contribute to their families and society.

Well said - what ever women choose to do we must respect and support it - house wife or corporate. Trying to shame and attack women who choose to be mothers and home makers is nonsense.

You are right, there is no one-size fits all situation. African women have always been industrious and they must be supported to make the decisions that works best for them.

In a company, you'll do whatever you can for the success of that company regardless of the challenges. Yet you cannot work for your company (home)
Seeking benefits without doing the work is fruitless.
Nobody has it easy. But the success of the company (home) is paramount.

Men and Women should have their roles - if a Man works very hard (outside the home) and is able to provides for himself, his partner and children - Women working (inside the home) shouldn't complain about helping to manage (inside of the home) which she nor the children have to pay to maintain or share/own. Do your part and we will continue to do ours, PERIOD. Both roles are VERY IMPORTANT.

Thank you DonPete. Many people donot want to acknowledge that, many of the married women who work do not share in the cost of providing, maintaining and housing the the family.

They pick and choose when to be traditional. Man will build house buy car pay for clothes fees pay for everything then a woman clean the house it's a problem

This video seems to promote the narrative that the wife's carrier is as important as her home making role. Which is not. She chose to have a carrier in addition to her gender role as a family nurturer. That's physically exhausting. Two solutions I d suggest:
    1. Wife, give up corporate job and focus on family.
    2. If she can't give up on her carrier , then why not hire a house help to relief her from some of the house chores....after all aren't you making more with two incomes?
