@@gimmietheloot1 I haven't either and considering that he produced for Jay-Z, that's why. I don't listen to Jay-Z but Young Guru has a great attitude about records and samples.
One of my favorite CD episodes. Dude is well spoken, clearly has some deep crates, but also brings up alot of good points and perspectives at the same time. Great motivator
YOUNG GURU!!!! Freshman Year HU.. I remember going to his dorm room after hearing his mix tape and putting him on to do a party for my crew... Ahh the good days!
One of the best episodes of Crate Diggers! Loved hearing his methodology - learned more from this than anywhere else! He needs to teach a Master Class!
U2 - Joshua Tree, hands down my favorite album of all time. Awesome to see he has that. It does have some solid drum beats and bass lines you can sample from.
I should start making a digital list that I have with me at all times...often times I go digging I come back home with a record I already have...if its a record that I really love I keep it as a back up copy otherwise I resell it...
been a long time boss man. Met you in NYC when me you and Aaron good the trombone player were @ the hotel. Can't remember which one. Salute you Guru. #KickPush yours truly the sooooo jersey Dj Jess Ryte
What is a Library album? More specifically.... The library records that diggers search for are from the 1970's and some 1980's... A lot of these contain 'open' drum breaks 'open' means clean with no keyboard, vocal or guitar etc but can contain other percussion. A lot of library records will state 'for the purpose of tv , film, radio, jingles' etc but I have never seen or heard much evidence of them being used commercially back in the 70/80s except for home use/semi professional. But the diggers (think archaeology), dj's and hip hop producers etc started collecting these heavily in the late 80s for sampling the break beats (break= the part of the record where the drums are left to shine all by themselves (open drums) or with other sounds such as percussion, string, keyboard, vocal, electronic effects or guitar).. Some of these records are very hard to find so go for silly prices..But luckily quite a few now have been reissued.. Also an important thing to note is that most producers will sample the original records for the crackles and hisses! This gives it authenticity.... Peace ;) (Ps there will be more specifics to what a Library record is but trying to keep it simples/cymbals )
told somebody that my father commented on certain rappers and said that they was good this is proof that you could be any age and listen to hip hop and actually find some value and enjoy so when the young heads say it's got something to do with your age that's a bunch of BS at the end of the day hip hop is music good music people like it bad music people have a time with it or don't like it
love beatmakers checking ac/dc ;) i actually live a few houses up the street from where they lived in my area during the mid 70s, strange feeling walking in the footsteps of people you look up too like that
One of the best quotes ever, and I’m paraphrasing: “...one day you’re gonna go home and put that ohio players record on and realize why it’s so popular. Cuz it’s dope as shit”
At 10:38 and 5:34 when Young Guru's talking about "looking for drums" or getting drums from nonexclusive records like Joshua Tree, what does he mean? Like why would he or anyone else be looking for drums, to sample them for their beats?
Hip hop producers often sample Drums from other records, or the element of a track that has a 'Drum Break'. Basically what he was saying that although you can find a lot of drum breaks on funk, soul records from earlier times, there can be a crazy Drum Break on a contemporary piece of music like U2's 'Joshua Tree'. A good example of a dope drum break could be from 'God Made Me Funky' by The Headhunters. Hope that helps.
Pretty much, you can chop a drum break and use the elements (Kick, hat, Snare). Check this video out - it's a run-through of the process. /watch?v=KRafmJpTbX0
I might be misinformed on this one, but I think he usually hires musicians to, as accurately as possible, replay whatever samples he wants to use in a studio setting. Makes for better sound and more flexibility I suppose. Obviously kind of similar to classic sampling but still an important distinction in my opinion.
"I have 4 kids... Who has time to do that (count records)?" priceless.

So the point of sampling these drum breaks is to reuse them on new songs they're making?
Pretty much, you can chop a drum break and use the elements (Kick, hat, Snare). Check this video out - it's a run-through of the process. /watch?v=KRafmJpTbX0

b0cafloja
Dre's most popular song 'G Thing' is a direct sample of a song called "I Wanna Do Something Freaky To You"..
I believe he sold it years back.
wtf, of course he does, most of his songs are sampled
I might be misinformed on this one, but I think he usually hires musicians to, as accurately as possible, replay whatever samples he wants to use in a studio setting. Makes for better sound and more flexibility I suppose. Obviously kind of similar to classic sampling but still an important distinction in my opinion.
