    FORMULA BREAKDOWN
    Litokol Epoxy grout - mixing ratios simplified:
    Component A - 93.7 parts by weight, Component B - 6.3 parts by weight (total = 100)
    A kitchen scale is great to measure out the grout
    If you calculate that you need 100 grams of grout, weigh out 93.7 grams Part A, and 6.3 grams Part B
    If you need, for example, 145 grams of grout, you will need:
    (145/100) x 93.7 Part A, (i.e 1.45 x 93.7 = 135.8 grams) and
    (145/100) x 6.3 Part B, (i.e 1.45 x 6.3 = 9.2 grams)

    A beautiful post from Janelle Knight
    Thank you so much Peter for this video, it's not as scary to work with as I thought it would be, in fact it's actually quite easy. I'd like to thank Alison from Merlin Mosaica for bringing this product to us all and personally for answering my many questions. I love this grout and so will many more after seeing your tutorial I'm sure. Thank you for featuring my Anisa inspired lazy susan mosaic that is a gift for my son's 30th birthday (he hasn't seen it yet, but the secret may be out now :). This was my fifth piece ever completed and my first glass piece and I couldn't be happier. If I can continue to learn and only become half as good as Anisa and yourself Peter, then I will be a happy girl. I love your videos and have learnt an incredible amount from you and I can't believe you featured my work, wow I feel delighted and nervous at the same time. Thank you.

Thankyou very much for letting me use your mosaic piece in the video, a perfect 30th birthday present for your son. :)

      You’re giving my secret away if you show everyone this product! 🤫. Just kidding!! such a good product and love your work Peter. Two questions: the manufacturer recommends mixing all of the kit in one batch (which obviously isn’t very helpful for smaller jobs) have you had any issue going back and mixing a second or third batch?
      Later in the video you had used some Soudal Fix all clear. I know you’ve made a comparison between Weldbond glue and Mac glue, but I was hoping you could give a comparison between Soudal Fix all clear and Mac glue please?
      Thanks for your time @Treasury Road
      Best,
      Brock

      @@brockmillard7615 LOL@secret. Thankyou very much, appreciate that. Actually its a bit of a secret product. I have been using Laticrete Spectralock Pro Epoxy grout for years and I did the same thing using small quantities although they were different mixing ratios, and its a different product but its still epoxy grout and it worked very well. I am about to do another experimental piece tomorrow, using some of the left over Litokol translucent grout, I don't expect any issues but will definitely upload the results. Of course it will also depend on how its stored and how long you store it for. The Soudal Fix All and Mac glue are totally different products each have their own pros and cons and it really comes down to where you're going to be using them and which one is the best to use for the project. For a glass on glass for me its Mac Glue all the way, for adhering mirror its Soudal that wins as its neutral curing so the reflective backing isn't effected. I may actually do a versus video on these two products, maybe a good idea Brock. :)

      Thankyou so much Catherine. People are using it for glass projects with fantastic results. Where the product can let you down a bit is if you have large areas of dark colours, it doesn’t give you a great depth of colour for instance black. It will turn out a grey colour, however l don’t see that as a major issue. This product has many awesome benefits. Thanks for watching. 😊

    Thank you for this very useful information and your availability to be a resource to us. I have a stained glass piece I want to use translucent grout on and used Weldbond to adhere the glass to a wood substrate. I also have some iridized glass scattered around the piece. Any possible compatibility issues with this grout and Weldbond or iridized glass? I so appreciate your advice.

    • @TreasuryRoad
      @TreasuryRoad  Год назад +1

      Thankyou so much, I cant answer your question because I don't use Weldbond as my main adhesive. Weldbond will return back to its original state when it comes in contact with moisture. In most cases it will eventually turn clear but it can take many many months for that to happen. Using the Litokol translucent grout this may not happen but I cannot tell you for sure so I am guessing. How the iridized glass works with the translucent grout a good question, again I haven't used it with iridized glass. I would suggest doing a small test with all three to see how it goes before doing a large piece. You can post the same questions in a couple of the Facebook mosaics groups such as Mosaic Mentoring and only ask for comments from people that have actually used all three, this should filter out any guesswork. :)

    Peter thank you for this great video!!! Very informative! I am going to try the translucent grout for the first time on a Landscape mosaic piece that i've been hesitant to use traditional grout on. I currently have it on mesh and usually adhere it to the cement backer board with thinset. My thought is to use another adhesive for this piece so that the translucent grout can go down to the bottom of the glass/board for optimum visual... What would you suggest? Also wondering if the mesh would be seen through the grout? I don't think so... but wondering if you have any experience with that. Also the piece does not have a border! So was wondering how to get a smooth edges with the T. Grout. Thank you!

    • @TreasuryRoad
      @TreasuryRoad  2 года назад

      Thankyou very much, appreciate that Elaine. I cant comment specifically about your job as there are always variables I cannot see, like any job. If you are applying the thinset to the cement sheet, you can use a notched trowel as this will help ensure you do not apply to much thinset, the notches come in different depths. Caroline Jariwala from Mango Mosaics has a video using a notched trowel. ruclips.net/video/93GE4SGLm3Q/видео.html I dont think you would see through the mesh with the translucent grout as its is frosted, that would have been a good one to try in my tests. I still might do that. As far as the grout on the edges Im not sure what you mean but just make sure you don't wipe the grout out of the grout lines that are exposed on the edges. :)

    Thanks for another great video. I was wondering if you would consider using Litokol translucent on a glass vase with flowers made from smalti slices and bits of china between flowers. I’m wondering if cleaning the grout, with the uneven and sharp edges would be too difficult. I’m fairly experienced and enjoy a challenge. Would appreciate your input before I spend the money on that grout.
    Only about half the vase is covered with tesserae. The rest of the vase is left blank, so would like to keep a semi transparent look for the mosaic section. (I wish I could send you a photo.

    • @TreasuryRoad
      @TreasuryRoad  2 года назад

      Thankyou so much Anne. The Litokol Translucent grout is designed for glass, I cannot see why it wouldn't work with Smalti depending on the closeness and the height of it, however testing would be needed because the Smalti is rarely grouted. Smalti has pits and is quite undulating which would definitely be a challenge to grout, I don't think you could get the grout out of the pits but that in itself may be an interesting look. To get the optimum look from the grout 3mm or less grout lines are required and also using glass, when you are using crockery, the crockery doesn't reflect the light so the grout has a frosted look rather than reflecting the colour of the glass as seen in this video. Using the glass vase isn't an issue and it looks great because it has been done using this grout, however the lady used stained glass. It would be an interesting project and you could certainly buy a small container of Litokol Translucent, it has a 2 year shelf life, providing you would use it in other projects if it didn't work for this one. Thanks for your your comment and for watching. :)

    • @TreasuryRoad
      @TreasuryRoad  6 месяцев назад

      You don’t mention what tessera you are using, to get the best out of the Litokol Translucent grout it’s best to use glass with 3mm or less grout lines. The sample with the crockery in the video is uneven, it works but you don’t get the colour reflection in the grout lines. If you are using uneven glass you may not get the colour reflection in the grout lines, it would probably depend how uneven it is. 😊

    • @TreasuryRoad
      @TreasuryRoad  8 месяцев назад

      The Litokol translucent grout is a great product but only if you meet it’s requirements as mentioned in this video. It’s not there to replace normal sanded grout, it’s a specialty grout that’s very unique and offers benefits over traditional grouts. Where it doesn’t work as well is in dark colours suck as black and dark blue. The grout doesn’t do “depth” of colour so when used with black Tess the grout will look grey which l dont see as an issue. However if you have a piece and you use lots of coloured Tess this is where the product shines because traditional one colour grout can fracture areas of the piece especially if there are large areas of colour that conflict with the one colour grout. The colour is like a frosted glass probably has a grey tinge in its raw state. Thanks for watching and commenting. 😊

    • @TreasuryRoad
      @TreasuryRoad  2 года назад

      Kaye its great asking questions, dont feel bad about it. I have added a link for the playlist "starting in mosaics" that will answer many of your questions. Generally speaking its always good to use a sanded grout, not a premixed or a unsanded grout. Epoxy grouts are great but start with a sanded grout first. Its also a good practice to read the manufactures technical data sheet and also the safety data sheet as well before buying a product, I do this before purchasing any product. They answer many questions and its good to go by these than by public opinion because they are accurate and correct. Asking for advice can be hit and miss because generally people who have the best intentions don't have the full facts of your job and so therefore the information given may be incorrect or misleading, its always good to read these sheets and then you decide if its suitable for your project. This is why most of my replies are of a general nature. That's not to say you cant get other peoples opinions to help you out but just keep in mind there's always more than one way to do a mosaic but doing your own due diligence is worth gold. Also people have their own preference of products that they like to use so you will find conflicting reports but again reading these sheets can be the difference between success and failure. My latest video will definitely help you out regarding these technical and safety data sheets. :)

    Thanks so much for this video Peter. I have used Litokol often since watching it several years ago. I have a question for you and hope you can assist me. I mosaiced a ceramic fish with both stained glass and ceramic pieces. They were of different heights so I put the Litokol on rather thick. When it dried it felt very gritty in some areas so I tried sanding it with a soft sandpaper. What a big mistake! Now it's left a white sandy look all over. It is not quite as gritty but looks worse. I've tried putting a rubbing compound on it and even a soft paste wax that is used on cars. Can you think of anything else? Or would another layer of the Litokol help? I'm so upset...I spent over 100 hours on this piece :(

    • @TreasuryRoad
      @TreasuryRoad  2 месяца назад

      My pleasure Michelle. You dont mention what was gritty, the surface of the tess or the grout lines. The grittiness are the glass beads that reflect in the grout lines or the grit possibly came from the ceramic pieces. If the grittiness was on the surface of the tess and assuming you mixed the right quantities and mixed it well, I would say not enough water was used to clean the tess. Putting it on thick shouldn't have been an issue however removing the excess and getting that clean is the issue here I think. Sandpaper I hate to say it was not a great idea because all that will do it scratch everything and scratch the epoxy, once thats been done trying to fix it could be an issue. Normally when people use the clear epoxy resin over photos etc, you can scratch it up with sandpaper and then apply another layer of the resin and the scratches disappear, so that would have been a good move, however you are using epoxy grout. Did you try vacuuming off the dust after sanding? Its very hard to work out what to do next because I am not there have a good look. Litokol do make a cleaner for epoxy, that would have been my first step before doing anything else and most likely what I would try moving forward. Because you have applied a rubbing compound and a wax these will most likely effect a second coat of epoxy grout and could react with it, the cleaner may remove these but unfortunately everything now will be a matter of trial and error especially if the cleaner doesn't work.

    • @michellelalonde4918
      @michellelalonde4918 2 месяца назад

      @@TreasuryRoad thanks Peter.....guess I just have to cough this up for "lesson learned". The sanding just scratched the grout and left white where it had been gritty. But the grittiness was at least clear and was still probably sellable. So stupid on my part. It was the most ambitious piece I ever tried and just wanted to make it a bit softer. You are probably right, I didn't use enough water to clean the tess. The piece is so large, I grouted sections of it at different times and most of it turned out ok. I think I just got impatient to finish it. Lesson learned! Thanks again Peter. I've used the Litokol on other smaller pieces and they turned out great, so I haven't give up!
