I was a stained glass artist for many years and I still have a grinder that helps remove the foot from plates or bowls, in case there's a pretty design in that area. Thanks for all you do! :) x

I even wrote a story "Legend of the Wind Chimes" ... after my son died suddenly of a pulmonary embolism after a minor back surgery. Thankyou very much and appreciate that, silica is extremely dangerous and causes silicosis an irreversible lung disease. I think many dont know or tend to ignore it, one of the worst diseases for people who work with concrete, tomb stones and more recently due to their popularity stone kitchen benches because of this the government here has acknowledged cases will rise dramatically as many young people dont wear a P2 or N95 or a respirator mask while cutting and sanding it. Hi Peter, I'm doing pretty well with my mosaic art, and for sure you helped! I have a lot of glass, and dishes but I am QUITE intimidated by the vitreous square tiles. I know I CAN cut them but I see so many mosaics , especially the really beautiful ancient ones that use these squares. If you feel moved to make a video on how to use them....I'm in. (ONLY a suggestion, lol)
Hi Bev, How you use vitreous tiles is dependent on the look of the project you are creating. If you look at a lot of the ancient mosaics the tess they used were not perfectly square. When you're on Facebook next have a look at Lawrence Payne his a wonderful mosaic artist that specifically works in creating the look of ancient mosaics, he creates and teaches free online videos on his process, that may also help you. :)

Would you do a video about the different saws? Band saw? Wet saw? Or ring saw ? and how they work for cutting plates and glasses. Do you use one? And which one is your preference?
To make a proper review on them I would need to experience all those that the market offers first which wouldn't be feasible due to the costs and getting them. Most of them are quite expensive and if Im creating a review and people go by it just reading about them wouldn't do my viewers justice without a hands on approach, but I will definitely keep that in mind a good suggestion. :)

Thankyou so much, I cant answer specifically about your job as there are always variables I cant see as in any job. Some of my concerns you would need to take into consideration, are they are going to pose a danger risk to someone walking up the stairs, how wide your stair treads are, are plates going to be suitable for the environment they are going to be in for instance is it a freeze thaw area. People have used them for rises on exterior stairs in the garden however every job is different. :)
Hi Peter, I love your mosaic tutorials and have learned a lot with you! Do you have a method to chip off the glaze of crockery or ceramic / porcelain tiles? It adds an organic feel when I mix it with slate or stones but I don't know how to deface those tiles effectively in a controlled way. Thanks so much!
Hi Regine thankyou so much. Good question but I haven't done that, I think it would be a matter of experimenting with different tools that are used for tiles and concrete to see what works best. The glaze on some tiles may chip off better than others but I think the concept is great. :)

Glad I caught this video!! Great job! Question: I have a Polish Pottery casserole that I broke and was hoping to make jewelry with. It is very thick, and glazed on the back. I couldn't shape at all w/ my Dremel, and my nippers were even less effective. Any ideas on what I could use to shape the pieces?
Thanks heaps Karen. :) Im not totally familiar with the dish although I am with casserole dishes which are quite thick. You could possibly use a Taurus ring saw but it may be too thick and thinking it would probably be very slow. I would be inclined to cut the piece roughly without shaping it and then dip one edge in water for about 20 seconds and then pull it out and try compound nippers with small nips to nip to the shape you want. I have created two videos, one showing what compound nippers are and the other on nipping Johnson tiles using this method. Im not saying it will work but it may. Let me know how you go, someone else may even have a better idea without buying expensive equipment. :)

Hi Peter, Do recommend removing the edges of plates before using them? Some plates have such pretty good or silver trim I hate cutting it off. Thanks again for all of the knowledge you are sharing!
Thankyou so much Pat. I don't specifically remove the edge of the plate unless its really thick, I cant use it or it may have gold trim that may come off with grouting. I may remove the edge of the plate if I need the rest of the plate and the rim doesn't suit me but if its good I will definitely keep it to use at a later date. I look at the plate and take into account the different features that it offers, pattern, texture, colour and see how all of it works or part of it works with the mosaic I am creating. If you can use it in a mosaic and its sound by all means use it. :)

Thankyou so much Ewa, appreciate that. To help guard against the silica dust I use a P2 or a N95 because they filter out the silica down to a certain size particle. Avoid the buying the KN95 because they are supposedly a Chinese equivalent but have not been approved. :)

Thankyou very much Cindy, working with plates is awesome I love it. The purple heart I made using Aves Apoxie Sculpt and then I think I coloured it after baking I cant remember. I would suggest doing a internet search because there are also different silica’s. Reading about them will give you a lot better understanding than a 10 min video. However in saying that l will have a look at putting something together if there is enough interest . Thankyou for the suggestion. 😊
Thanks for sharing your talents which are of great benefit to me. I am aiming to make jewellery using chinaware. I am still in the process of 'collecting' and found your tips very useful. In my searches, I have found that the pretty items of chinawear have become really quite expensive in the UK and becoming collectors pieces - even in the charity shops and online marketplace. As I am hoping to sell my jewellery to give profits back to two charities, I am needing to keep the costs down and therefore afforable to the general public. Do you have any good tips to pass on to collectors please? Thanks again.
Thankyou so much Dora. If you are meaning tips on where to purchase cheap china, not relly. The cost isn’t so much in the china it’s in the labor. You can purchase expensive branded china which would increase your price, however it also comes down to how much of the pattern you can get out of the china. For instance you may get five or so pieces of jewellery out of a cup or plate. This makes the cost come down for each item. Choosing the right design pattern that you can actually use helps a lot. Have a look at the collectors pieces and see what is selling, brands of china that the artist has used, the designs of the piece, etc. Not all pieces made will be sought after it’s generally the ones that stand out or are unique in someway or contain collectable items. Just my thoughts. 😊
What wheeled Nippers are you using / do you recommend? Are they the same as for glass but you keep them seperate due to blunting quickly on ceramic.
The double wheeled nippers are the Leponitt brand which you can use for glass and you can have two pairs, I find they are a good general nipper, however I just use the same pair for both applications. I have recently purchased the QEP extreme nippers which are great for glass and are lighter, however they are not suitable for ceramics or tiles, just glass. I do use the QEP Extreme nippers now for cutting glass. Here's the video on the QEP Extreme nippers, also watch the maintenance video on them as well. Can you please tell me the name of the third tool (the one with the yellow and blue handles) that you use for the edges of the china? Thankyou so much Lis. The tool with the blue and yellow handles is called a compound nipper. There is a new design of that nipper which is so much better, it is more expensive though but easier to use and more versatile. Its called the MAX Pro compound nipper by SeaBell Tools, I have been using it and I have created a video review on it released in the next couple of weeks. The tool has just been released and may be a bit difficult to get, its released in Australia in September. This is the one I would consider buying over the ordinary compound nipper. Question: What do I use to cut the handles off coffee mugs?
It depends on the finish you're after, I have used double wheeled nippers, sometimes they can be hit and miss due to the different qualities of cups but you can use a wet saw which will be more accurate. :)
I did buy a N95 mask today!! Is it better to cut them outdoors if you can? I live in FL, USA so I am able to do this. Usually, there is a breeze as well.
Cutting outdoors will ensure the the silica doesn't float around inside when you're cutting but its all about common sense so as not to drink or eat when you're cutting or having an open drinking cup that you will be drinking from. Just dont breath the silica in, I do all my mixing of grout and thinset outside wearing a mask and either grout outside or inside while its in the wet stage. :)

I want to cut rectangle pieces from plates. Any advice/video on that?
This video will give you the information you need to know however a glass scorer may also come in handy for straight lines. Using plates you will probably create quite a bit of wastage to get rectangles but its doable a lot depends on the plate because some will break where you want it to and others have a mind of their own. :)
What is an instance when one would use the foot of the plate?
Just for something a bit different, to add texture and interest. If you look at my video on creating a mosaic pot I use some there. :)
I have happily and thankfully watched this video also. I think what I am asking is what nippers to use when the dish rim is thinner than the space between the opening of the nippers when they are closed..?? I keep running into this problem and end up making a mess and wasting the edge patterns..

A good question and I haven’t run into this problem at all in that case l don’t really have an answer except maybe to score it with a glass and then snap it with running pliers as if you’re working with stained glass. The plates must be extremely thin or the nippers must be open too wide. 😀

The tools I used are the Leponitt double wheeled nippers, a generic brand of compound nippers and side biters. How do you store the broken pieces?
Once I break a plate I store the pieces in a ziplock plastic bag and then in a plastic container. That way it keeps all the pieces together and also keeps the bags together, I store them like a filing system where you can access them easily and see the contents easily as well. If there are any real pointy pieces of crockery then I just nip the point off so it doesn't shred the plastic. :)
Is it good to cut plates when wet?
I’m not sure what you mean and in what context that would be referring to.
If I soak my plate in water, could that help in making an easier cut, also with silica???

No l haven’t cut a glass dish, l find that they can be quite a thick glass. I have some that l wanted to cut up but with the thickness and the weight it put me off. But for the right project l may consider it. Thanks for watching. 😊
Thanks for some of the info...You forgot to say, wear protective gloves...You also forgot the wear a mask....That we all should be wearing... * The info about 'why' we should wear a mask was number 1. well done you...The other point is 'yes'! do not go cutting the plates up around the kitchen...well really you were correct, do it outside good advice.

OMG I've never heard about silica being in plates and have never used a mask when cutting; I'm doomed.
Its never to late to mask up, silica is in concrete, plates, stained glass, crockery, ceramic, etc. Also dont cut up abalone shell or shells either, they are dangerous to your lungs and not because of silica. :)
