  • Using ball chain and beads in a mosaic can look awesome but what do you adhere them down with and how do you grout them? When using 2 part apoxies separate tools are required to avoid cross contamination this was not reflected in the video. :)

    Instead of epoxy sculpt could you use thin set, mixed to a thicker consistency? What is your substrate, foam or wood? Or perhaps would the water in the thin set affect the "stainless" quality of the ball chain? Sanded or unsanded grout?

    • @TreasuryRoad
      @TreasuryRoad  Год назад +1

      Thinset can be quite messy for delicate work whereas the Apoxie Sculpt is perfect, easier to work with and a lot faster in this instance. The substrate is wood and I used Laticrete Permacolour sanded grout. Stainless steel has high in corrosion resistance but I would think the high alkaline content of the thinset would be just too much and attack it. Thanks for watching. :)

  • @shuffman8094

    Thank you so much. I never thought to use the epoxy sculpt for the ball chain to hold it in place. Brilliant!
    Can I ask if why you chose epoxy sculpt for the tesserae as an adhesive instead of glue? Was it to stay consistent since you used it with the chain ? Or do you prefer epoxy sculpt with ‘China’ ?
    Thank you in advance.

    • @TreasuryRoad
      @TreasuryRoad  3 года назад +3

      Thankyou very much, I do use glue at times for china but since I was already using epoxy clay I thought I would just stick with it (pardon the pun lol ), also if your china is not totally flat then there is less surface area for glue to adhere to, the Apoxie clay solves that issue. I prefer to use glue where I can instead of Apoxie Clay.

    Thank you for the great video! Would you use waterproof epoxy sculpt for chain on outside pieces? I’m thinking about decorative garden stones with ball chain and glass. I’ve had some issues with ball chain and silicone.

    • @TreasuryRoad
      @TreasuryRoad  3 года назад +2

      Thankyou so much. You can use ball chain and apoxie sculpt together outside however unless the ball chain is stainless steel it will rust and even then stainless steel may rust or get a patina as there are different qualities on the market but stainless is a lot less likely :)

    Oiy!!! Using the same gloves from Part A to Part B? Cross contamination? I ruined my Apoxie Sculpt by doing that and had to throw out half of the unused containers. An expensive lesson for what NOT to do. I use separate spatulas now for each part.

    • @TreasuryRoad
      @TreasuryRoad  2 года назад

      Thankyou so much. Yes you are correct that is the right way. I have used heaps and never had that issue of cross contamination at all. I can only think that their must have been a reasonable amount on your gloves to cause the cross contamination where you had to throw it away. But you are right and you've bought up a fair point, I will use separate tools moving forward and will also add that in the description of the video as well. Appreciate the comment. :)

    Pretty. Normally, would you work from the inside out?

    • @TreasuryRoad
      @TreasuryRoad  3 года назад

      Thankyou. This bird was not meant to see the light of day as it was used in another video demonstrating apoxie clay but thought I would just use it for this video. I normally lay the ground work for the important areas, the accents, then I fill in the blank areas with the tess. If I was mosaiking the sides I would have done them first and then the face of the bird that way the join between the side tess and face tess would be on the side rather than on the face of the bird which makes it look neater. In the case of using beads or ball chain thats going around the outside I would do that first as it gives you an outline to work with and allows you to cut the tess to it which is easier than trying to add the beads or ball chains last. If I was mosaking the sides I would do that first then the outside beads or ball chain on the front of the bird. :)

    Do you know if any of those are rustproof? I used "stainless" steel ball chain in a big outside mosaic and it totally rusted. Now I am afraid to use it........I live in Hawai'i, lots of rain and high humidity.

    • @TreasuryRoad
      @TreasuryRoad  Год назад

      There are a few different grades of stainless steel, I think 304 is the standard and then there is 316 and offers greater corrosion resistance and a higher price, I think this is the one they use for parts on yachts and boats to protect against salt. I love the patina look of rusted ball chain however it does depend on the job. The ballchain I used in this video was stainless steel 304. Will the stainless steel last the test of time in a mosaic without rusting, that I cannot tell you. I must visit Hawaii one day, thanks for watching. :)

      @@TreasuryRoad I think both the thin set and the grout plus the humidity killed the ball chain and turned it into a rusty mess. I don't think I will use it ever again for an outdoor mosaic. I might visit Australia next year (Adelaide). Any mosaic action going on there?

    • @TreasuryRoad
      @TreasuryRoad  2 года назад

      Hi Vivienne, it is expensive but very useful, you could look at using a cement based adhesive (thinset in the USA) to level the area, there are different ones so just make sure it suits the materials you're using. You could also look for more even flatter rocks which would save you the extra work. :)

    • @TreasuryRoad
      @TreasuryRoad  2 года назад

      Hi Mozhdeh, they are called flush cutters and I imported them from the USA although they would be out here as well. The ball chain is really quite hard as its very good quality so I would probably cut them with a pair of small wire cutters instead which are very easy to come by. :)
